Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.
This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since, less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMIs already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women who have had health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or LeanGains-type 16:8, combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range. -Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing. 5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE. A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers! Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life! And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :
  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • Hot drinks: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just note any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, have EDs, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So eat to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • Check with your Doctor : if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss. Add a siesta if DCs disrupt nights.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.

oh i would never give up chocolate again ever! good luck though you are brave lol

ErrolTheDragon · 04/03/2014 16:33

Giving up chocolate for lent......anyone joining me????
No, not now that DH has started buying the 85% stuff, and we're both happy to eat it in the manner indicated by the last thread title. Grin

Perhaps I should give up Muller Corners - they're my main sin at the moment. Trouble is, DD simply won't eat natural yog and doesn't drink milk so I don't mind her having them... but she only likes two flavours and they're in two different multipacks. Which are of course on a 2-for offer (another contributor to the obesity epidemic). Once I've eaten the ones in the fridge, that is, I don't feel particularly bound by whatever odd logic makes today Shrove Tuesday but Lent can be a way of imposing a bit of discipline/mindfulness.

womblesofwestminster · 04/03/2014 17:27

Mmmmmm Muller Corners. Haven't had one of those in years.

zedzedzed · 04/03/2014 17:32

I'm not giving up anything for anything...sorry! Good luck though. xx

TalkinPeace · 04/03/2014 17:37

wombles
I've not eaten breakfast since I was 15
Effectively it means I do 16:8 every day, with two of them being fasts
and if you just have fluids in the morning you do not need to eat as much until later
so you have a bigger supper and sleep well

mummyof2
I'll cheat and say I'll give it up
except I never eat it

womblesofwestminster · 04/03/2014 17:51

TalkinPeace Well I've only had one meal so far today (a big chicken curry with brown rice) and I'm only just starting to get hungry! Going to go to my gym classes now and then have a large beef stew and bed before FD tomorrow :)

Octopus37 · 04/03/2014 18:04

I haven't been very good today, but I have learnt from it. Had my usual breakfast, then I had a white choc chip cookie from Greggs (ok that was a treat). Had a healthish lunch, 1 piece of cheese on toast and some veg soup. It all went wrong this afternoon, several biscuits and a Pringles binge. TBH have felt really stressed out with my boys this afternoon. Lesson learnt, I obviously binge under stress, but I did know that. The earlier in the day I eat sugary food, the more likely I am to go wrong for the rest of the day. Fast day tomorrow, will do it the same way as it works quite well for me, ie 2 cartons of soup within 500 calories. Aim to do much better than today for the rest of the week following my fast day

almostthereagain · 04/03/2014 18:08

mummy I'm giving up sugar so yes will be giving up choc within that. Good Luck. I am expecting to be surprised at how much I eat it as I don't think I have that much iyswimConfused
Tomorrow is 1st weeks weigh in post hol, am hoping to be closer to pre hol weight rather than post Christmas weight! Have re started exercise regime, finally, hope to see some changes soon. Now just have to successfully avoidpancakes falling into my mouthGrin

zedzedzed · 04/03/2014 18:14

wombles glad you're liking the no breakfast thing and are having a better day today, you sound really positive. Hope your FD is just as good.

DorisAllTheDay · 04/03/2014 18:26

Well, I haven't been through all the posts since I was last here, but I did scroll back to see why everyone was saying well done to Zed. And sorry to shout, but THAT'S FREAKING AMAZING!!!!!!!!!! Zed, you've done fantastically, I hope you're properly proud of yourself.

I'm afraid I have bad news to report yet again. I can't get back onto it. My eating is worse than I ever remember it being in all my 49 years of bingeing and yo-yo dieting. Could something medical be going on here? I managed a year and a half of sustained weight loss in 2012-13, I don't think I have any major self-esteem issues, and I have loads and loads of psychological strategies for managing the binges developed during the months of successful moderate eating. But since October I'm getting frequent episodes when I can't control my eating no matter what I try to do.

So could I ask for some advice. Is it likely to be hormonal, to do with the menopause? And if so, would there be any point in me going to my GP about it, or is there nothing that can be done, and I just have to get through this stage? I'm hovering at just over a stone more than I was at my lightest (six months ago), but I really don't want to put the remaining 5 stone back on having worked so hard to lose it. I'm really feeling quite despairing at the moment.

zedzedzed · 04/03/2014 18:42

Doris I think talking to your GP is a great idea as you know yourself well enough having lost all this weight to spot when something's odd. Best to rule out menopause/hormones/diabetes/thyroid/stress etc before you go beating yourself over the head with an 'I'm Bad and Binge Stick'.

Obvious stuff, but worth a read maybe: www.health.harvard.edu/newsletters/Harvard_Mental_Health_Letter/2012/February/why-stress-causes-people-to-overeat

zedzedzed · 04/03/2014 18:45

PS doris, the only times I felt the total loss of control you're describing, the 'binge or die' feeling, was when I was pregnant, both times, so if I was laying money it'd be on hormones or blood sugar to blame...or up-duffness.

BetsyBell · 04/03/2014 18:48

Made some savoury pancakes: feta, garlic, spinach sweet pepper, cranberries and herbs, rolled up and baked with parmesan and black pepper sprinkle. Lovely. Did not want a sweet one after that :D

(NFD)

Errol would she eat some nice full fat yeo valley type yogurts? Or fromage frais if she doesn't like bits? Muller products always seem to have a rather long ingredients list. Just trying to save you from having to eat the leftovers Wink

((( Doris ))) It does sound massively hormonal, definitely worth getting it checked out.

Not2bObvious · 04/03/2014 18:57

Zed that is a fantastic result! Just goes to show how good this woe/WOL is.
Doris I wish I had some advice, if telling you I'm doing something similar(except I hadn't lost 5 stone) is any comfort but I'm sure it's not. Honestly though, if you think about it, there's quite a few of us bingey folk here. The biggest difference with 5:2 for me is I come back from the binges and get back on track - only problem is I'm gaining/losing the same half stone for the last 4 months! And for the 6 months previous I gained/lost the same 10 pounds.
Maybe it goes back to our roots when we didn't know when we'd get our next meal so we lose the plot in the proximity of food. Maybe we need a food bouncer, someone who'll physically stop us eatingSad

zedzedzed · 04/03/2014 19:00

Yes, I do yeo valley natural too but I add a pure fruit puree (sounds crunchy, but easy/lazy: I just make it once a week and divvy it up... banana, apple, frozen berries, whatever's on offer/going mushy, cooked down with water/vanilla/cinammon/whatever suits and blitzed).
Both babies love it.

ErrolTheDragon · 04/03/2014 19:06

Betsy - yes... I might get in something like that next week - I've probably got to get some different foods in anyway for the German exchange girl.

Doris - if you're mid-50s then some sort of menopausal thing has to be a possibility, certainly sounds worth getting a checkup.

We had savoury pancakes too - DD's idea, she suggested I made some Chinese chicken (chicken stir fried with lots of veg and some hoisin stirfry sauce) - it went well and pancakes more nutritious than noodles I think (egg, milk and the barest brushing of oil on a non-stick pan). The last one each we had with warm berries - no added sugar needed.

zedzedzed · 04/03/2014 19:44

Mmmmmmm...leftover orange butter icing from the freezer on a hot pancake.
Yum.

diabolo · 04/03/2014 19:52

Kitchen closed here. FD completed at under 460 cals and I'm hoping for another SV tomorrow.

beanandspud · 04/03/2014 20:08

Well done Zed - what a great result, you must be so chuffed!

FD completed today. Definitely find it easier not eating until mid-afternoon (small snack) and then having an almost normal dinner.

EagleRay · 04/03/2014 20:50

What a fantastic result Zed - bloody well done!

Just completed FD no 5 - not too bad going but had the challenge of the office kitchen being covered in wall-to-wall pancakes from the local supermarket. Wasn't really tempted, but just found the amount of food sat there really annoying! Found concentrating on work really hard today, but think that's because I didn't have a lot to do.

Was a bit disappointed at my weigh-in on Sat as there wasn't much difference from the week before, but have actually lost a bit since then, and my overall loss since I started 18 days ago is about 5lb, so quite pleased with that.

Loving all the talk of snorkelling holidays - DP and I did a ridiculously cheap snorkelling holiday in the Caribbean a couple of years ago and hoping to go back in a couple of months' time. We'll be taking DD who was conceived out there! I will look hideous in a bikini but not quite as hideous as last time I was there...

Oh, and my yoghurt treat on NFDs - take some Yeo Valley yoghurt (any fruit flavour) and put a small amount in a dish and chuck it in the freezer for an hour or two. Remove and eat like ice cream! It seems to make a small amount go a long way

Eatriskier · 04/03/2014 21:12

I may have consumed my own weight in pancakes. I am stuffed, happy and anticipating a massive carb hangover tomorrow.

Eatriskier · 04/03/2014 21:13

And, most importantly I have no guilt bwahahahahahahahaha

may have gone a little insane

MazzleDazzle · 04/03/2014 21:20

Well done zed, cracking loss! You must be so pleased.

NFD here. Today's the day I have college and don't have time for lunch, so it's the one day of the week I have breakfast and a large one at that: pancake with blueberries, live yoghurt and agave nectar followed by a bread roll. For dinner: sausage casserole with steamed cabbage and crusty bread. After dinner: crisps, cashews, cheese and dark chocolate, each in Borrower size portions! All for 1770 cals!

On the advice of someone on here I have set my NFD cals to what my TDEE will be when I'm at goal weight, so I don't have to reduce them as I lose weight. Works for me!

ErrolTheDragon · 04/03/2014 21:24

I only made one eggs worth - 4oz flour, 1/2pt milk between the three of us so less carbs than if we'd had rice or noodles. TBH we each could have polished off another one or two so I've promised DD I'll make some more for her breakfast (and one for the dog, who missed out this evening) if she asks me when I check she's woken up.

MazzleDazzle · 04/03/2014 21:25

A ridiculously cheap holiday in the Carribean, EagleRay? Do tell me! I thought such things, along with cheap flights and train tickets, were a thing of urban myths and legends!
