Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Tips and Links : Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • Hot drinks: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just note any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, or ill, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So eat to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.

Miffy I remember doing well with consecutive FDs last year too, seems you get on a roll so you can just carry on without waking the hunger. May join you and do another if today goes well! Good luck!

Doris how are you doing... Still determined, we have done more than half the day already, think of the nice clothes we will be in a few weeks time when the sun is out!

I'm still coping with the herbal tea at the moment, think I'll try what bigchoc does and have a low cal protein shake for dinner later (choc flavour of course) as it's the eating that sets me off on a downward spiral at the mo.
Hope being liquid it will tip toe past the hunger monster!

Eatriskier · 18/02/2014 14:26

Hello everyone. Hope you're all doing well. Welcome all the newbies.

Finally off the antibiotics here so not feeling anywhere near as sick, b12 due tomorrow and I may be able to catch up with the thread by the end of the week!

DorisAllTheDay · 18/02/2014 15:04

< waves to Chocupid > - hang on in there! We can do this. Mind you, I couldn't cope with herbal tea at all. The real thing is my comfort blanket and my salvation. Good idea to think about what we'll be wearing when the warm weather arrives.

Glad to hear you're feeling a bit better eatriskier.

Diabolo, congratulations on your loss. That's a great start to the year.

beanandspud · 18/02/2014 15:38

Thank you for the welcomes. First Fast Day yesterday went ok although the soup made me a bit windy so glad I was on my own. BlushBlushBlush. I thought I would wake up ready to eat my own arm but strangely it was fine.

I'm not planning to count calories on NFDs but to cut out junk where possible and still eat loads of fruit and veg.

Have planned second FD tomorrow. I think I need a couple of 'set menus' to stop me having to think about food.

wildwater · 18/02/2014 16:18

Hi all. Just wrote a longish post then managed to delete it - drat!

All well here. Struggling with news of the death of a dear friend back in NZ: a young mother leaving three very young children & husband behind. So sad.

Meanwhile I continue to make and sell out of my raspberry muffins every day. I have been a bit all over the place with fasting & eating generally, but my weight feels stable according to my clothes. I plan to weigh myself this Friday (FD), and re-focus.

We are returning to NZ at the end of March, for a few months. Will be good to catch up with family & friends. I also some have work lined up there, which will help us to finish off our house when we return here.

Cheers & happy fasting to all 5:2ers Flowers

batfuttocks · 18/02/2014 16:46

Hello! Can I join in for some support please? I've done some fasts before (whilst trying to get pregnant though, until I realised I probably shouldn't be!). Anyway, fast forward 18 months and I am now 6 months postnatal and due to some joint problems I've not been able to lose the extra stone of baby weight.

I'm on my second fast day and finding it easier today. I'm sure I am totally sugar addicted so look upon this as a way of breaking that and also getting out of the habit of all day long grazing. I've been awful for that on maternity leave, as I spend the while day filling my face. It's good to feel hunger again and realise it won't kill me!

Starting weight is 79 kg and my fighting weight is about 68-70kg. I'm tall though, with a bmi that's top end of normal, so I tend to find losing weight hard if I'm not running etc(no chance of that right now).

Just rewatching the original documentary in YouTube for inspiration to get me through the last hour or two before breaking my fast!

diabolo · 18/02/2014 17:25

Thanks for recommending Bovril on the thread the other day - I skipped the WW soup at lunch as I just didn't want it, so had a Bovril drink instead about 4pm.

Wow!!

I hate Marmite so thought this would be awful too, but it was just like having a thin beefy soup. Really tasty.

TalkinPeace · 18/02/2014 17:47

Tiggermummy
Another vote for treating fizzy drinks the same as alcohol : full sugar, full flavour but only at times where an adult would have alcohol
so lots on holidays, but not during the week etc
it seems to work.

batfuttocks
welcome aboard : these threads are great for motivation to stop snacking and cut down on sugar
you'll manage it.

headintheclouds · 18/02/2014 18:14

doris chocupid positively , I hope you're all doing okay today with the fasting??thanks for the invite doris but I did fast yesterday and I haven't actually found fasting a problem .I happily fast on Mon/Thursday .Its just that on the NFDS I eat normally and easily ..I don't seem to be stuffed like others sAy on here..Some seem to struggle to get up to their TDEE..I struggle to stay below it! And that is why A few pounds have crept back on! I think that once the spring/ summer gets here it will be easier ..warming red wine is just too tempting on these dark wet nights

MrsFlorrick · 18/02/2014 18:39

Diabolo. GrinGrin It's is isn't it. As in beefy.

Strangely satisfying.

It's seen me through many a FD successfully.

I had a FFD (failed fast day) at 1000 cals so sort of mini fast. So I've had another one of 1000cals today. Doesn't quite even out the score but almost.

Wet day with DC. Thankfully had a play date this afternoon. It was successful. All the DC had a fab time. So no one whined or wailed for a whole 3 hours. Bliss.

DH back from trip several
Days early. So DC are being bathed by him while I drink tea Grin

MrsFlorrick · 18/02/2014 18:42

Batfuttucks. Welcome friend GrinGrin

You're like me. Tall and about 79kg at the start of 5:2 last August.

Now 68kg Grin which is a shade under 21bmi. And body fat of circa 23% which is good (I'm 40 btw).

Hang out with us and you'll get there in no time. Besides its fun here. And I've had the most amazing support and hand holding Thanks everyone.

Anything you want to ask please do and wise people (not me!) come along and help.

DorisAllTheDay · 18/02/2014 19:03

Ah, head, I didn't realise you'd fasted yesterday. Apologies if you said it and it didn't register - this thread moves so fast I lose track of who is where! I know what you mean about struggling to stay below TDEE on NFDs. I wish I was one of the ones who struggled to reach it, but that's a struggle I can't ever imagine happening.

I meant to try the Bovril thing today, but when I was in Sainsbury's late last night I put so much effort into avoiding the bakery and confectionery sections, and I was so focused on getting out of temptation's way quickly, that I failed to concentrate on what I was doing and bought Bisto instead. Blush. I haven't been tempted to try that as a drink today.

But my good news is that it's 7.00 and dinner time, and I'm on track! Whoopee. And I still have enough milk left for another cup of tea before bedtime. Hope my fellow Tuesday fasters are doing OK.

MrsFlorrick · 18/02/2014 19:07

Doris. ShockShock Bisto. Interesting. Not tempted either Grin

Southeastdweller · 18/02/2014 19:12

lady You're being needlessly hard on yourself. Why don't you try for a FD tomorrow or a mini-fast?

Not2bObvious · 18/02/2014 19:12

Howdy y'all. Rescheduled FD today, busy busy so that helped a lot. No time for tea or only a few mins for lunch, just enough time for a 200 cal lunch. I still have a few cals left, might have an orange, get some vitamins in.
Another fast moving thread! Who asked about nfd food guilt? I get that too. I wish I wasn't so obsessed with foodBlush but at least with this WOL I do get to eat the things I like from time to time and manage my weight kinda
Have sky+'ed some weight loss programs, so I'm treating myself to a watchathonGrin I love stuff like this!!

batfuttocks · 18/02/2014 19:18

Thanks for the welcome. Just checking on you all whilst my dinner is finishing off in the oven! Proud that I've made it til this time without a bite or a lick. Usually it's rare that my mouth is empty! Feels good to not feel bloated for once.

BigChocFrenzy · 18/02/2014 20:07

There is no fat in any kind of cola or popular fizzy drink. You mean full-sugar, I expect.
A 330 ml can of ordinary coke has 140 cals, including a whopping 35g sugar, so about 3 tablespoons

Slugsonmypeasgrr · 18/02/2014 20:10

Batfuttocks you are me 4 weeks ago! 8 month old and still breast feeding but managed fasting for 4 weeks and have lost 3.5 kg already! At this rate I will be my ideal weight in time for Summer hooray!

BigChocFrenzy · 18/02/2014 20:11

Lady You had a really tough time with that horrible bite and antibiotics. If you are feeling grotty, maybe just stick to TDEE until you are better and then try another FD ?

BigChocFrenzy · 18/02/2014 20:20

Well done Diabolo, Bat, Bean, Doris, Not2B. Lots of successful weight loss and FDs today !
Grin
Are you hanging in there Chocupid ?

Great to hear you feel better, Eat, you've had a rotten time

WildWater So sorry to hear about your friend. Especially sad to hear of a young parent dying.
Flowers Sad

batfuttocks · 18/02/2014 20:26

What I find hard is not continuing to eat once I've broken the fast.

Am sat here ignoring homemade ginger nuts and telling myself not to have one now because I can eat the whole bloody lot tomorrow if I see fit, if I can JUST MAKE IT TO BEDTIME. Gah.

But then, I have a while wardrobe of lovely clothes that fit the thinner me. And not a bloody penny, at the end of mat leave, to buy anything to make me look nice at this size.

Damn those noisy biscuits.

BigChocFrenzy · 18/02/2014 20:26

Someone asked about exercise on FDs ? Yes, it seems to help fat-burning.
A brisk walk is fine if you are not used to exercise.
Mosely's Fast Fitness routines are a great introduction to more strenuous exercise, because they only take a few mins and you don't need gyms or any equipment.

Those of us who are gym bunnies enjoy fasted training. HIIT goes very well with fasting and seems to stop hunger for hours.

BigChocFrenzy · 18/02/2014 20:29

Bat Break your fast with nutrient-dense food and only a moderate amount of that. Speak sternly to your bod - it can eat a ginger nut tomorrow Smile

KateBeckett · 18/02/2014 20:34

Thanks bigchoc that was me. Not sure how I'll manage to excersise on a FD at he moment, as I felt so weak yesterday!

I'm hoping that gets easier as I get used to this WOE...

batfuttocks · 18/02/2014 20:38

Ha ha, tomorrow tomorrow. I will be strong.

Happily, I felt good on the fast today. Waves of distracting hunger but I just drank a pint of water and waited for it to pass. I'd do an early night if I thought the baby would allow itSmile
