The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • Hot drinks: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just note any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, or ill, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So eat to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.

I was on the pill for years (marvelon for the last 12 of it) until my GP realised I was over 50 ... that was for acne/pcos mostly. TBH didn't really make any noticeable difference to anything except helped the acne and awful period pains I used to get. Way back I tried a combined pill for a while, which didn't suit me (spottier and some weight gain which may or may not have been coincidental). Oh, and was on Dianette for a while - effective against acne but I realised it was starting to make me depressed. 'The pill' covers a lot of different things, great if you can find one which suits you.

Tiredemma · 24/02/2014 15:39

My FD collapsed at 12.30 pm as friend asked me to meet her for coffee. This resulted in me having a piece of caramel shortbread too- so will FD tomorrow. Weak-willed.

batfuttocks · 24/02/2014 15:51

Tiredemma: we both have babies, maybe that's why no will power?

MetellaEstMater · 24/02/2014 16:08

I haven't been on the pill for a few years but it didn't effect my weight or cravings as far as I recall.

I'm watching supersize v superskinny whilst the baby feeds/snoozes on me. So far distracting me from the massive chocolate craving I'm having!!

Trying zero noodles tonight. Curious things.

akarucker · 24/02/2014 16:14

Thanks for the nice welcome back! I'm tail between legs but first FD is going well. Loads of tea (with milk, but I allow 100cals for milk), and adapting tonight's family dinner on my plate. Certainly not as hard coming back to it as I thought. In fact, I'm getting that familiar virtuous feeling again. BVB how could I forget the awful sugar challenge!! It was the hardest thing I've ever done....haha! Sugar is my nemesis! Well done for your changes in sugar consumption.

Eatriskier · 24/02/2014 16:44

I'm not currently on the pill, but have tried many incarnations. Depo - put weight on massively. Combined - no gain but no loss and plenty of migraine. Prog only - gains again. Mirena coil - lost weight (though I was 5:2 at the time, no slowing down of progression).

I think its probably person to person sadly.

TheRaniOfYawn · 24/02/2014 16:59

I am hungry. But I'm cooking an early dinner for everyone, drinking Murray mint tea and remembering that I can eat more tomorrow if I want to.

Dotty342kids · 24/02/2014 17:20

So, I had a tiny veggie sausage roll earlier, at 41cals, and am nearly there, at dinner time! Yippee Grin. All I have to do then is avoid the kitchen for the rest of the night............

DorisAllTheDay · 24/02/2014 17:29

Hi, akarucker. I've just gone upthread and read your previous post, and I sympathise absolutely. I spent a year and a bit losing weight not via 5:2 but using MFP to help me cut down what I ate and by being more active. I reached goal weight in October 2013, but by the beginning of January I'd regained a stone and a half. I'm terrified about ending up back where I was (15 and a half stone) or more, having yo-yo dieted for decades, so I'm trying 5:2 in the hope that I'll be able to retrain my very dysfunctional habits of mind and body. I'm glad the first of your new season of FDs is going well - hopefully a good FD will get you properly back on the wagon. I'm also a tea drinker - speaking of which, it's time for me to have another cuppa, accompanied by a giant plateful of smug virtuousness.

Tiredemma, I think anyone with a baby who can even contemplate an FD is anything but weak-willed. How those of you with small DCs are coping is a mystery to me - tiredness is one of the things guaranteed to get me reaching for the biscuit tin that's if they get as far as the tin because it's usually straight from packet to gob. Good luck with either making today a mini-fast, or a proper FD tomorrow, whatever you decide to do.

BigChocFrenzy · 24/02/2014 17:32

Re binge / junk: Just realised I haven't eaten what I classify as "junk", sweet or savoury, for at least a month.

Shock
Old hands may remember: I used to have 5,000-cal Junk Frenzies of milk choc, supermarket muffins, cheesecakes, donuts, crisps, chips etc.

5:2 has taught me to eat mindfully and I eat masses more fruit now.
However, I still eat a lot (2400 TDEE) and I enjoy good quality indulgent food, about 2 x weekly all (!) of these "treats":

  • big rice pud or other indulgent dessert from VG canteen or restaurant
  • huge bowl of strawberries with loads of cream
  • 2 bananas with inch-thick peanut butter on wholegrain bagels
  • 90% Lindt choc, 25g
  • huge dollop of hummus or taramasalata on wholegrain toast
  • huge cheese fondues or baked ricotta with wholegrain toast
  • ultra-thin-crust sour cream veg pizza, from local deli
  • 80g salted peanuts, cashews or air-popped MW plain popcorn.

plus occasionally:

  • birthday muffin baked by work colleague

So, I remain incorrigibly greedy, unlike Betsy,Tip, Bssh, Eat, Postman

TwittyMcTwitterson · 24/02/2014 17:33

Progesterone only pill

diabolo · 24/02/2014 17:55

NFD here, although I have only had 120 cals of naice ham and a banana so far today as not feeling hungry. Supper will be a chicken, tenderstem broccoli and water chestnut stir fry, in oyster sauce with egg noodles, still ridiculously healthy and well under 600 cals.

Am feeling really cheated as DH and I had planned a lovely 3 course lunch out yesterday but he food turned out to be very disappointing - soggy batter on my fish and the smallest starter and pudding I've ever been served. I hate it when you look forward to something and it turns out to be awful. All I could think was that I could be eating those calories on something much nicer.

FD tomorrow. Well done everyone.

batfuttocks · 24/02/2014 19:21

Well done all those succeeding with the fasting today! I've made 60 cakes and still felt very nibbly as I hit evening so have decided to fast tomorrow instead and have joined in with stir fry tea and then had some Greek yoghurt and berries. Bit disappointed to bugger up a fd but then, traditionally would have blown out massively today and am now at less than my TDEE and all set for a better go at fasting tomorrow.

northeastofeden · 24/02/2014 19:36

First fast day done, it was okay, easier than I expected in someways, harder in others. I didn't manage to stick to it 100% and have come in at just under 700 cal for the day, but I reckon with a bit more planning I'll crack it on Thursday. However I did get a walk in the sun at lunchtime today, so lovely, and not something I've done for months.

I had a look at the insipiration thread, you guys are amazing, I'm really excited about what can be achieved with this WOE. It is truly incredible, well done all the old hands!

bigchoc you mentioned having veg juices on fast days, I was wondering how you work out the cals on them? I love green juices but use tomato to sweeten them a little and they might be to calorific for fast days.

aka what was the sugar challenge?

eveesmummy sounds like I may follow a similar pattern to your first week!

Early night for me I think to avoid any more food!!!

BetsyBell · 24/02/2014 19:40

I've done alright today - 2 small apples, 1 small banana, venison meatballs in spiced tomato sauce with carrots and peas and 5 pasta bows! (Actually had 8 on my plate but didn't want them all)

All I could think was that I could be eating those calories on something much nicer. that sort of thinking is a NSV in my book diabolo - sorry that you had a disappointing meal though.

I do try and subscribe to 'enjoy every calorie and don't waste any on anything that's not good enough'.

It sounds obvious - but think of all those times when you (me) have finished up the kids soggy leftovers or carried on chugging down the food even though you've stopped enjoying it. I used to eat faster when I didn't like it - to get rid of it quicker! Then, eventually, I realised we had a bin and I wasn't it.

I was until very recently taking the pill to control horrible PMT, I've only stopped because I'm in my late 30s and my Dr stressed it's now or never for the baby thing.
I never noticed it increasing my appetite, although coming off it has coincided with the start of 5:2, so the weight I've lost could be either, or a bit of both.
If you suffer from very bad PMT then the pill does help. But I've also found exercise really helps manage my hormones since coming off the pill.

BigChocFrenzy · 24/02/2014 20:13

Northeast I shamefully admit I use cartons of the ready-made veg juice. Choose mixtures of carrot, beet, celery etc which are around 20 cals / 100ml.
Advice:
in the morning, measure in advance the amount of juice, milk etc you want to drink in a day and put them in separate little pots with loctite lids.
So, you know the exact amount of calories for liquids to put in your plan for the day.

ShyGirlie · 24/02/2014 20:13

Is zed still on here?

FD and still haven't ate dinner. I never feel hungry on FD. Probably doing something wrong! Haven't been drinking much either. Could easily cope on nothing all day.

MadameJosephine · 24/02/2014 20:28

Well my first fast day is nearly over and it hadn't gone too badly. Managed to come in at just under 700 calories. Had some chicken noodle soup for lunch, a couple of satsumas mid afternoon and then quorn steak with rice and veg for dinner. Had a dull headache for most of the day despite drinking a lot of water but I've survived!

TalkinPeace · 24/02/2014 20:30

Fast day supper was a new variant on a theme :

Carton of Covent Garden butternut soup, leftover veg (beans, carrots, broccoli) lightly fried - all into big frying pan, poach 3 eggs each in the soup
serve with a slice of bread
around 450 calories each and UTTERLY stuffed !

northeastofeden · 24/02/2014 20:31

Thanks bigchoc that is a good tip, it would be easy to go over. I mainly have spinach, celery, cucumber and tomato with ginger and garlic, it is fantastic for my (problematic) skin. I have to work hard to get all my vits as I'm allergic to a lot of fruit. So I don't want to cut them out if I can help it.

Whoever asked about the pill upthread, I've not been on it for years and feel so much better. Definitely find my weight easier to maintain when I'm not being a greedy guts!

northeastofeden · 24/02/2014 20:34

Well done madamejo almost the same results on your first fast day as me, but we did it!

zedzedzed · 24/02/2014 20:40

Just checking in. Flu turned into sinusitis which turned into an ear infection, migraines and lastly a chest infection...FINALLY gave in and asked for antibiotics...on the mend at last.

Among all this I've somehow ended up being sub TDEE on NFDs, also had 2 accidental sick day fast days last week as I was too ill to swallow more than soup, and today was kind of a FD because I was too busy with a massive family crisis to eat till just now. Hooray! So bored of all the drama and illness.

Anyhoo, a I'm starting to feel human again I'm looking forward to some good, fatty TDEE eating tomorrow.

Re the pills, I think yeah, like lots of you said, everyone's different, I tried 3 or 4 different pills, with each I gained weight rapidly, suffered loss of libido, heavy periods, PMT and moodswings. I also had terrible never-ending heavy periods with the coil and my experience with the 3yr implant sent me soooo doolaly and depressed and furious and FAAAAT that I turned up at A&E threatening to cut it out as nobody would listen to me and make me an appointment to have it removed!

Hormones are powerful things and should be treated as serious drugs I reckon. So condoms it is eh...jeopardy jiving, but what can we do? Hoping to lose enough weight that I can eventually risk the mini-pill in my 40s... hoping it doesn't mess with my noggin too much.

Good luck to all Tuesday fasters and congrats to all losers...welcome noobs and returnees.

zedzedzed · 24/02/2014 20:43

crossposts there...hi shy yeah zed's alive still...just!

BetsyBell · 24/02/2014 20:49
