Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 37 - Having our cake (batter off the spoon: 15 calories per lick - thanks MFP!) and eating it too (tomorrow).

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Tips and Links : Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

Inspirational: eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

Exercise: bigchocfrenzy has an incredibly informative and helpful exercise and fitness thread for discussion and advice on combining 5:2 with an exercise regime.

Maintaining: If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

How can I have put on 4lbs this week? How?
I have been doing 2 fast days, mon and Thurs since New year's day. After the first week I lost 6lbs. Great, I thought, but probably mostly water. Last week I gained 2lb, just a blip, I thought.

I got on the wii board this morning and I've put on another 4! I have thus fasted 8 times, taking in 12000 fewer kcal and have lost NO WEIGHT! This is so demotivating, I am wondering why I'm bothering.

My main reason for doing 5:2 was for long term health benefits, but so frustrated as I can't measure these. What could I be doing wrong?

curveballs · 24/01/2014 08:10

Hopeful, have you looked at the be food smart website? I have an app of it downloaded on my phone. There are quite of few breakfast ideas on there, and a few look gluten free, and the ones that aren't you may be able to make so by using alternative ingredients? Had a quick flick through and average seems to be about 200-250 cals, but there are a few under 200 too. May be worth a look...

BsshBossh · 24/01/2014 08:14

0.8 lbs lost this week.
Goal weight 125 lbs
Current weight 125.8 lbs
So so so close :)

ErrolTheDragon · 24/01/2014 08:18

hopeful - breakfast:

How about yoghurt with fruit and nuts and seeds for breakfast?

That's what we have - at this time of year the fruit is usually frozen blueberries/cherries/raspberries (Sainsbury's does good ones), dh likes them still slightly frozen, I like them a bit warm. He likes Total 0% yog, I like onken natural set. I keep a jar of mixed sunflower, pumpkin and linseeds (are there any other good seeds I should add to the mix?) and a jar of almonds and hazelnuts. DH has some bitesize shredded wheat with his too (obv don't do that if you need gluten free).

If you can eat eggs in things, another option could be pancakes - my DD goes through phases of liking these so I make a batch of batter which lasts a few days in the fridge if I don't steal it for lunch. I just googled 'gluten-free pancakes' and there seem to be lots of recipes. DD has them with the frozen fruit (and sometimes one nutella).

BsshBossh · 24/01/2014 08:19

Oh, just realised, I am now (just) in the 8 stones something band :)

ErrolTheDragon · 24/01/2014 08:27

Oh, well done Bssh - and I think there was someone else upthread who'd passed into the next stones down (sorry, on another page now so can't see who) - its psychologically good, isn't it? Smile

MrsFlorrick · 24/01/2014 08:37

Bssh. GrinGrinGrin Hurrah!!! Less than one single measely pound to go!!
(Waves Pom poms cheerleader stylee).

I still have exactly 2lbs to go. No loss this week. But I am right behind you!!

My weight doesn't sounds as impressive as yours though at 155lbs. Grin

It always amazes me how much difference an inch or two in height makes to healthy weight and BMI.

Bad night. Less than 2 hrs sleep. Argh. It wasn't the DC, I just couldn't drop off. Took a tablet and it didn't help. Hmm So mega groggy now.
Hanging on for Wine later and Silent Witness on telly (sad no life emoticon).

ErrolTheDragon · 24/01/2014 08:43

Waves the pombears Bear Bear MN cheerleader style.

BsshBossh · 24/01/2014 08:44

MrsF yes you are much taller than me! I am a distinctly average 5ft 4.5in (that 0.5 of an inch makes all the difference!).

Eatriskier · 24/01/2014 08:47

hopeful sorry missed the entire gluten free thing. Still very tired Blush

craggyhollow · 24/01/2014 08:50

I seem to have lost 3lbs after one fast day Shock

Forgot how inspiring this woe is.

Must try not to go too mad this weekend

frenchfancy · 24/01/2014 08:51

woodchuck please don't be demotivated. Have you been exercising more than normal? An increase in exercise can give a short term weight gain whilst your muscles repair, but it is just water.

Have you measured? Particularly your waist, that is where you will see the changes first.

Is it your TOTM, you can easily put on 4lbs for that, but it isn't permanent.

The overall trend is the important test.

curveballs · 24/01/2014 08:56

Well done bssh, you must be over the moon!

I am really struggling with headaches this week - weirdly only on NFD's. it could be down to work stress, but has anybody else experienced this since starting this woe?

Eatriskier · 24/01/2014 08:58

wood are you weighing on a carpeted floor and in clothing? I know both these can really throw off scales, let alone the win balance board which I personally found very temperamental.

turkeybaby · 24/01/2014 09:27

well done bssh that must be an exciting time. i'm just at the start but all good so far

had a bad start to my FD. both DP and I have ended up working from home which is a bad idea in itself without the FD element. he just went to put some sausages in the oven and i barked at him quite a lot so he put them back in the fridge. i feel really bad now but i really really do not want to smell sausages cooking this morning. am i being selfish??

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 24/01/2014 09:49

Well done on the S and NSVs everyone! So motivating to see success Grin

I completed my FD successfully yesterday, I came in at around 700 calories, but for a first attempt in ages I'm pretty happy with that (I allow 100 extra per FD because I am BFing). Feel so much better this morning, and the scales have tipped back down into the 13-stone-something bracket.

I have only just broken fast this morning with a yummy breakfast of granola with greek yoghurt and fruit compote.

turkey you possibly are being selfish, but sausages on a FD morning would be too much for me to handle too! Can you get your DP on board with 5:2?

jenniferlawrence · 24/01/2014 09:50

Hello.

I think this thread might move a bit quick for me.

I did my first 2 fast days this week and they went well. I didn't struggle with them at all and haven't felt the need to binge on NFD so I'm really pleased. I just hope I see some movement on the scales next week.

As I'm not on a diet over the weekend I've told DH and DC that I can bake a cake for us all to enjoy which makes a change.

Loving 5:2 so far.

lucyintheskywithdinos · 24/01/2014 09:56

Morning! I'm struggling to keep up with the thread too!

Still plateaued at 10.7. Bah. I'm going to keep on changing things around until it shifts. I just want a 9 on the scales by my birthday! Which is in March, so should be totally do able. If this plateau ever buggers off!

Great result from a FD ali I love it when the 'stones' number changes, so heartening!

My 5:2 evangelising has had its first results - my friend's DH has lost 10lbs in a month!

WhenSheWasBadSheWasExhausted · 24/01/2014 09:57

curve toffee zed thanks for the well wishes for dd. It's a bit odd she doesn't seem at all ill now.

Even last night she was happily chatting away inbetween puking. Seems fine now and is eating crumpet.

We are all shattered though so fast day is on hold. I'm getting the buckets of bleach out zed. We are on operation clean up.

MorrisZapp · 24/01/2014 10:00

Fasting today. Have skipped breakfast for the first time. Having Starbucks porridge for lunch, can't blooming wait.

ErrolTheDragon · 24/01/2014 10:09

Weigh day - the scales were dithering between 59.9 and 60kg, but before and after exercise I'd drunk a litre of liquid so I'm knocking a kilo off that - .4/5kg down on last week.

MrsFlorrick · 24/01/2014 10:10

Curve. Headaches could be dehydration. It's a suggestion.

The only times I have had headaches on FDs and a NFD following a FD I've been dehydrated and I could tell because my wee look like weak tea (without the milk obv).

MrsFlorrick · 24/01/2014 10:12

Whenshewas. Ugh. Poor you and DD. no fun. Fingers crossed she is fully on the mend.

zedzedzed · 24/01/2014 10:25

Maybe if people had a minute they could say their first month experiences losses/gains briefly? It might cheer up the NO LOSS folk enough so they can persevere?

It can't have been instant and plain sailing for everyone, and I bet there are some who've lost shed loads now who didn't lose at all in the beginning.
Maybe it depends how much you have to lose and how messed up your metabolism is from previous 'diets'?

I just don't want the non-losers (who may be me soon) to feel despondent. This woe MUST work, it's just maths...and yumminess!

Also, folk like bssh (whom I consider was my fat twin a year ago), it's so inspiring to read you're less than 1lb away from your goal... that's what, over 100lbs lost? Woo-hoo!

turkeybaby · 24/01/2014 10:34

oh no zed have you not lost anything yet?

i think we started about the same time.

i haven't lost anything yet but i'm only 2 weeks in and i haven't started calorie counting on the NFDs yet. i'm going to get myself used to fasting first.
