Fasting / 5:2 diet

The 5:2 thread number 37 - Having our cake (batter off the spoon: 15 calories per lick - thanks MFP!) and eating it too (tomorrow).

BetsyBell · 22/01/2014 16:25

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

Other Threads
All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Tips and Links : Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

Inspirational: eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

Recipes: frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

Exercise: bigchocfrenzy has an incredibly informative and helpful exercise and fitness thread for discussion and advice on combining 5:2 with an exercise regime.

Maintaining: If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

I was going to fast again tomorrow but DS2 is desperate for lasagne. I love it too so think I will fast all day and then have a smaller portion...

DH having chips with his 2 pieces of haddock. I am having salad with my one piece and maybe not even the 3 chips I planned. The thought of carbs is giving me virtual tummy ache.

Well done curve

When are my dcs going to bed?!!?! Very tired today, just want to have dinner and go to bed myself. Unfortunately I can't do dinner until they're asleep. Well I can but DH may not appreciate it!

Whoop-whoop curve!

Just made a delicious hot salad of spring greens, purple broccoli, sugar-snap peas and red pepper, served with garlic, ginger, chilli and soy marinaded duck breast on top (shared among three of us, the duck was very rare and sliced super-fine, so all in under 200cals per portion). I had wild mushrooms in it too, but they were a mistake...too mushroomy. I also had two Ken Hom Dim Som (prawn & lemongrass, sesame & pork, 40cals each). Which means, after all my drinks...I have 120 cals left for bedtime munchies...hot chocolate and 2 biscuits I think.

Well done all fasters and losers.
NFD tomorrow...and there's still one cupcake left in the tin!

Thanks guys. It sure does feel good biscuit. Loving this woe too Grin
Now to tackle my new obsession - scale addiction

Zed how do you manage to make every meal you make so mouth watering? Think you should apply to write scripts for the m&s food ads!

Well done to all fasters today, you're nearly there!

I'm on NFD today and just about to cook a nice stir fry. Yum yum

If you need cheering up, a brisk walk outside often does the trick (if it's not pissing down and you've somewhere nice to walk)

Alternatively, on an NFD, some 85 or 90% cocoa dark choc can help increase the seratonin levels in the brain. The suggested dose is 25-30g. Milk choc just doesn't work the same and has too much sugar to be healthy.

Toffee I was so impressed with your system of muzzle inspections for BoyCat before he is allowed in the house. Any more mice today ?

He sounds a real character who deserves blog space. Maybe he could contribute a recipe for mouse tartare to your Moreish Food Thread ?
Hmm

Aaw Blush thanks curve and biscuit.

I'm trying very hard to use my powers for good and not evil, (if I can make a 2000 cal dinner taste good I should be able to make a 200 cal one taste good too; I'm just trying to re-learn what foods taste good already and not relying ONLY on tons of butter and oil and cheese to give flavour).

It's more effort, but if I'm going to do it for life it's no use relying on packets of artificial crap as I won't be able to live that way for long.

No mice today, so far. Means nothing. Will probably have 10 tomorrow Hmm. I have made a point of playing with GirlCat a lot today to tire her out. BoyCat hasn't played what with sleeping all day on my bed Grin.

Recipe added shortly.

Hello everyone! Love reading all of your posts, it's like having a bunch of friends in my kitchen to stop me going nuts with the chocolate.

SV for me today, 1.1 kg lost since the last time I posted Smile. That's more than 8kg since beginning of December. I know it's not great to weigh daily (mentally) but I find it keeps me on track. Off to break fd now, with bacon and egg! Nothing else in the house, and 3 pancetta rashers is only 100cal...

Have a v tough couple of weeks ahead in work but trying to just look at it day by day otherwise I might flip - ahh modern life, isn't it grand!

I love how everyone's so calm and satisfied sounding by this time of an evening...the 5pm posts get a bit desperate and arm gnawing don't they?

Yeah biscuit the fat carries the flavour, it's true.
BUT on this woe you're allowed fat...but I'm finding that with great power comes great responsibility; just because I CAN eat cheese-laden lard bread for dinner, doesn't mean I should.

But I'm loving being able to use full fat cheese, butter, yoghurt, oil, meat etc, all good, natural flavoursome ingredients without guilt...and more moderately so far as the counting on FDs seems to spill over to NFDs.

But there's still a cupcake in my tin...it calls to me, darkly muttering refined sugar and salted coffee caramel loveliness in my chubby wee ear...

I can have it tomorrow.

Not2be. I feel for you. I am also having a tough time work wise. So stressful. Monday I resorted to a drink and it was supposed to be on an FD, so you are doing better than me. Hope it gets less stressful for you soon.
I have taken to plotting how many weeks there are until my next non 5 day week (either because of annual leave or a bank holiday etc). Gives me something to look forward to, and makes work feel more manageable too.

I have a day off week after next and after that, it isn't long until Easter bank hols. Have plotted the whole year, and its helped me feel a lot better about it

A very good fast day for me today, which is unusual as I generally find Thursday fasts quite hard. I think it's because I ate more than I usually do yesterday so had more fuel in the tank today. Have broken a 22 hour LOF with half a banana and a handful of grapes. Am heating through a pan of veg soup with added broccoli florets right now which I may or may not have with a slice of lightly-buttered wholemeal bread.

Now three NFDs. Whoop.

So this is my third week and my sixth fast day. This week has been ok. The hunger has been way better this week. I feel frozen today though, I quite often feel cold when 'dieting'.
I have 98 calories left for today so will have a decaf coffee and an apple before bed.
I shall weigh myself tomorrow.
What sort of weight loss are other people getting and do you feel cold?

Report
BiscuitBribery · 23/01/2014 20:34

I think I might make tomorrow a mini fast day. I feel up to it and I may as well make the most of it while it lasts! No chance of a 3rd FD though, Friday night's chilli night in the Biscuit residence! Grin

Very true Zed!

Well done to all the FDers today!

I save a few calories to allow me sprinkle some Stilton on my salad.

I have also been cold all day - but it is 2 degrees out there (blerdy Scotland). Think we might get some snow.

Friday night is pizza night in the Meg house - homemade with whole meal dough base.

Lilliput, yes I get FREEZING. Vest, tights, jeans, two cardis, personal heater next to my desk, old-lady knee blanket AND hot water bottle. Hands still cold. Worth it though, as I feel so much better for doing 5:2.
