Fasting / 5:2 diet

The 5:2 thread number 37 - Having our cake (batter off the spoon: 15 calories per lick - thanks MFP!) and eating it too (tomorrow).

BetsyBell · 22/01/2014 16:25

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

Other Threads
All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Tips and Links : Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

Inspirational: eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

Recipes: frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

Exercise: bigchocfrenzy has an incredibly informative and helpful exercise and fitness thread for discussion and advice on combining 5:2 with an exercise regime.

Maintaining: If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

BsshBossh - no idea what I am doing differently. Maybe eating enough on NFD? I did some exercise last week. 2-3 goes on the Wii and 1 hour walk, lots of water as usual and had a word with myself. I reminded myself how well I have done (2 stone off since July 2012 with Diet chef, exercise and now 5:2) and that I do not want to be unhealthy any more.

Argh! Really finding it hard to eat properly on NFD! The guilt!

My FD was a massive struggle yesterday too, I kind of hid from it, lots of reading and playing with DD. As many distractions as possible Smile

grace - this is my third time round the shred since last summer.

There are modifications to some of the moves, and you use whatever weights allow you to do the moves with good form so it's really not that bad. You can find the first level on youtube if you want to get an idea what's involved. If you decide to give it a go, the January shred thread is here for advice and encouragement.

biscuit I do to. What's helping me is counting my NFD calories on MFP and concentrating on QUALITY food and good nutrition...so good sirloin steak or quality duck or organic chicken...WITH skin, expensive blue cheese, nuts and seeds, fancy pate, olive oil, dense chocolate puds etc. I eat those things with loads of green veg on NFDs and they seem so satisfying after a FD and still come in under TDEE as you don't need the QUANTITY when you're mindfully eating quality highly nutritious foods.

Good luck, keep on trucking.

Smile PavlovsCats.

Just had a panic. I was kneading my bread when my arm just would not move. Two fingers were bent back with me not being able to move them. I couldn't use my arm at all and was already worrying about getting the children from school. Fortunately after a few minutes it went back to normal but it really scared me. In other news the bread is okay Grin.

BiscuitBribery - no guilt needed. If you didn't eat and drink you would die. See? No need for the guilt. Enjoy your food, make good choices and only eat what you really enjoy.

I don't feel guilty about a splash of olive oil on pasta or lurpak on some crackers. I don't buy anything labelled diet or low fat now. I am going to eat less calories but better quality and more natural food.

I have soup simmering on the hob and bread resting in the airing cupboard and calorie wise it will be soup - 147 and the bread - 126 per 50g slice.

Toffee Great SV, you totally smashed through that plateau and you are charging full pelt towards your target.

It also sounds like you have a good relationship with food now. Maybe eating enough on FDs helped your bod realise there is no famine and it's OK to release some stored fat.

ShyGirlie Well done on your weight loss too. You're on your way to a new you.

Lunch out again today - eyeing the baked salmon with veg broth and braised fennel. May manage a mini-fast after all!

Anyone have good suggestions for relatively nutritious/not too sugary baked things? DS2 and I like to bake on Saturday, but after last week's giant choc chip cookies (these: allrecipes.co.uk/recipe/4807/best-big--fat--chewy-chocolate-chip-cookies.aspx - we cut the sugar a bit - they were AMAZINGLY good) I think maybe something with less sugar/more fibre/a bit of fruit might be a good idea!

Morning all! Sorry, been woefully absent this last week. No excuses other than being busy, but also having seen an unwelcome return to binge type eating behaviours so think I was subconsciously avoiding this thread so that I could merrily ignore all you good folk and your excellent advice Blush
Anyway, I'm here again now. It's a usual Thursday fast for me and thankfully a long hairdressers apt this afternoon followed by trip to take son to dentist will keep me well away from temptation. Then it's Nigella's Thai red lentil and butternut squash curry for dinner, with one chapatti, which I love.
Looks like lots of you are doing well which is great news Grin

THanks for all the well wishes everyone. I had a DVT in my arm - so painful! my arm went navy blue and hugely swollen and numb. Anyway all fine now - have lots of blood thinning drugs etc and swelling is slowly going down and pain diminishing. but reading toffees post made me wanna say - watch your arm!
I am feeling so disappointed and frustrated by being ill. I really wanna get back on the fasting - I loved it! I'm going to mum's today to use her scales - I was late to weighing so haven't had a proper weight check since starting. If there is a SV I am going to eat super healthily and mindfully and check with my consultant at the blood clinic whether I can resume 5:2 and yoga.
COngrats to everyone on the SVs and NSVs - this thread gives me so much hope about this WOE - can't wait to get back on it with you all!

Hi everyone - some of you might remember me being on the thread back in the autumn. It has all gone spectacularly wrong over Christmas and I've piled on 10lbs+ :( Part of it is down to the medication I am on, but that is no excuse and I feel dreadful. Heavy, lethargic, unhealthy. Yuck yuck.

So this week I am back to the 5:2. First fast day today. Doing well so far, just a coffee with a teeny splash of milk.

RR - I have a thread where I am posting tasty things and if it is a muffin recipe you can safely add just half the sugar and I have found my children can't tell any difference even if I have made them previously with the full amount. Today I have made magic lemon pudding courtesy of Mary Berry and it has 90g of caster sugar in though I have to admit I have no idea if that is high or not.

Alibab Smile I remember you and we have chatted lots in the past when I had a different name. Don't worry. It is done now and you are back where you belong and we will all help you Brew.

Hello, been away a while. Work has been crazy and did has been poorly, chest infection, febrile seizures, chest xrays and then hand foot and mouth!

But I have made it below 11st! Fasting going really well at moment. I have started having the Innocent veg pots or sainsbury equivalent, as they are yummy, filling and the calories are already counted! It has really stopped me doing that picking in the afternoon and evening.

I also shifted my fast days kept ,Monday, but changed to Thursday. Having two NFDs in between seems to help with second fast day.
