IF / ADF / 4:3 / 5:2 / 6:1 / 16:8 ~ Maintaining at a healthy weight ~ Chapter 4

TalkinPeace · 13/01/2014 20:40

This thread is for those of us who have been practicing IF (Intermittent Fasting) for quite a while and are now at, or nearing, their target healthy weight.
It's also for anyone who is doing it for the health benefits alone.

How do we experience fasts and balance a stable food intake while having little or no weight to lose?
How do we ensure that this WOL keeps us at the healthy weight long term rather than revert to yoyo games?
How do we ensure that we keep ourselves looking great rather than just thin?

Many of us have been maintaining at our original goal weight for many months, and others are joining all the time.
Obviously, the more the merrier!
It is also worth considering whether a second, leaner target might be achievable.

You'll find the first three maintenance threads and all the main 5:2 threads for posters practicing IF to lose weight here Fasting / 5:2 on the diet forum. We're currently on thread no. 35, but there is a new main thread every 2-3 weeks.

There are three other associated threads:
This one, which is an absolute goldmine of Tips and Links on how to practice IF, and the research behind it.

And here is a treasure trove of 5:2 recipes, mostly low calorie for fasting days, but there are also recipes for when you want to treat yourself. And, now we're maintaining, we'll need more of these!

Since I started the last Maintainers thread the importance of exercise has come to the fore, as part of our general health and to help weight loss. BigChocFrenzys thread is here

TIP. Glow stick tennis sounds fun Grin

The piggies will love it Wink

The DC are beside themselves about going. DD is counting how many sleeps left.

DS asks when we are going every 5mins.

FD today. V successful. Soup at lunch and fish for dinner.

Need to pack another couple in this week to limit damage from chocolate room.

Anglaise1 · 06/05/2014 07:57

Yay, a sort of successful fast day, although I cracked with computer problems in the afternoon and had a piece of DD's Easter Egg (she is far more restrained than me when it comes to chocolate). But thanks to Spiderman 3 at the cinema taking up most of the evening I didn't have time to eat much after that.

Laska42 · 06/05/2014 08:15

Well after bank holiday (when i didnt overeat I thought, or have that much Wine) I have kept off only ONE of the lbs I lost last week,, Sad but today is a FD!) (I will do it) ..its only 6 weeks to hol ..

mrsflorrick you are going somewhere which has a cheese room??!!??Where is this Nirvana?

All im going non dairy this week ive decided and stopping buying cheese.. (and Wine..)..

MrsFlorrick · 06/05/2014 10:35

Laska. Grin Nirvana indeed!!

It's here:www.soneva.com/soneva-fushi

5 more sleeps to go....

Cheese and wine are such a lovely combo.

The killer for me is that I love chocolate as well. Cheese choc and wine. No wonder I needed 5:2 to keep my weight in check. Grin

Laska42 · 06/05/2014 13:54

Oh.Wow. Mrsflorrick (yes definately leave the kids and take the piggies.. )

just having miso soup , cucumber and sugar snap peas.. will be either chickpea curry and spinach ..or veggie stir fry tonight.

Thinks of mrs Fon that beach .. the one we go to in Greece hat not quite such white sand, but I do need take less tum with me. if im going to get it out.

AmericasTorturedBrow · 06/05/2014 15:03

hello lovelies - trying to catch up with the thread having had to stay away due to visitors and business

Laska you are doing brilliantly, keep in mind that holiday!

Hope you have a lovely holiday MrsF, have to say a cheese room does sound like heaven to my newly mostly-vegan tastebuds!

Well done for surviving your alcohol free fortnight B&W

Good luck on the next set of training ANglaise! - I am also crap at being restrained when it comes to chocolate, thank god all of it has now been eaten left the house

Happy very belated birthday TiP seriously - 22:2?? that is hardcoreQ!

It's less than 4 weeks til my ride so I'm on dietary lockdown. Trying to eat as clean and vegan as possible, so no dairy, no alcohol, no sugar, no gluten (though I keep forgetting this one Blush), as much good veg and protein as poss just to fill my body with health and strength. I am carrying 6lbs more than this time last year so I'm also trying to drop that without losing muscle strength. Aiming for 1-2 FD a week and otherwise keeping within 16:8 or 18:6

Southeastdweller · 06/05/2014 17:42

A cheese room is nirvana indeed...do please report back MrsF.

Eatriskier · 06/05/2014 18:04

A chocolate room??? weird cheese avoider feels the need to address balance Sounds like heaven.

Anglaise1 · 06/05/2014 20:38

Chocolate rooms
Cheese rooms
Cookie rooms
Almond rooms
Wine rooms
All heaven for me.
Hi ATB Can't believe it is only 4 weeks until your ride. You are being very restrained. I hope you manae to lose your few pounds - I did before my half marathon without losing muscle. In fact I ate more before that race (more, but healthy carbs) than I usually do without putting on any weight.

You are much more diligent than me - I'm not giving up anything and only have have 18 days until my next half marathon (well, a bit over in fact, 22kms). I'm starting to feel a bit tired now with it all, but there are no races planned for July and August thank goodness. Weight seems to be sticking around 57kgs which is what I want, but I know I'd be better eating a proper lunch instead of skipping it completely or eating a cookie instead...

Eatriskier · 06/05/2014 21:28

dreams of a peanut butter room

MrsFlorrick · 07/05/2014 10:17

Eatriskier. Grin I could do a peanut butter room or in fact a Nut Butter room. Just don't invite Bigchocfrenzy or we won't get a look in Wink

Eatriskier · 07/05/2014 15:09

Haha. Now I have visions of mrsF and I diving head first into bowls of nut butter, shouting at bigchoc to move on - there's nothing in here!

Laska42 · 07/05/2014 18:42

OK I had another FD today .. nothing until a mug of miso soup and a pack of sugar snaps and cucumber about 1.30, and just now have had stir fry veggies, beansprouts awith 3 very small eggs ..(from friend's pullets) mixed in . Thats it! .. Mint tea only now.. May try for 3 in a row tomorrow or at least about 2/3 TDEE which is v low as i dont exercise enough, or, lets face it, at all really apart from walking

Marcus is coming for the weekend..so I wont be getting out on hills , (but maybe I can run with the buggy a bit, wish I still had one of those baby backpacks I did with my DS) so now I must go make beds put things away and do housework.. and keep head out of fridge and secret choc stash drawer

Laska42 · 08/05/2014 19:05

Day 3 in a row fasting! I didnt eat anything until 3pm and that was a couple of eggs and tomatoes, and im just having veggie stir fry with prawns And so I'd better not flippin weigh the same as I did Monday tomorrow morning , like I did today Angry

TalkinPeace · 08/05/2014 20:05

Its lucky I do not own a set of scales !
Should have gone for a swim this afternoon but CBA and have reports to write.
Roll on late June.

OP posts:
Laska42 · 08/05/2014 20:15

it was not having scales that did it for me I think..I need to keep check.. Everything still fitted ok but once i finally got round to replacing the battery .. i realised that id been kidding myself..as was reinforced when I tried last years denim shorts on Blush, yup they did up , but it was more than just the one muffin hanging over the top ( half a dozen maybe?) .... its not fair! and im surrounded by slim people at work who eat all day as well SadEnvy

Anyway , not too late to pull it back, and the 3 days this week have been fine ...

Anglaise1 · 08/05/2014 20:24

Good for you Laska! You have been doing brilliantly. I've eaten like a pig over the last 24 hours, barbecue with friends last night and the unhealthy aperitif snacks and lots of wine, only 4 hours sleep, so have felt terribly tired all day with no energy, ate and ate and ate all the wrong things to try and feel better today.
Going for a 17km run tomorrow morning which will hopefully get me back on track Shock

Laska42 · 08/05/2014 20:45

Will be two Eating days in a row now... yum! (Sunday as ill be on the road , delivering Marcus back to his mum..so planning on a fast then again if I can ) .. I'd like to get back to my old 4:3 routine , fasting Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday .. thats how I lost it all before... I went back to threds 1-5 yesterday .. lots of motivation, but lots of people im not sure where they went.

ATB ive only now realised that your old name (GWTMH) was also referencing David Bowie (duh!) .. and there was TiP on thread 2 posting about being 9st 8.. and Catsrus saying she'd just got under 11st! .. Me celebrating 10st on thread 5 , just before the 'book' came out and 5:2 went viral ( but hmm.. its only me thats backtracked the other way... )

Anyone know what happened to greeneggsandnichts? , also we've lost my old mate Cyclistist If you are lurking, bro, come say hi..

Laska42 · 08/05/2014 20:46

thanks Anglaise at least your runs are keeping it off..

frenchfancy · 09/05/2014 15:14

Well I've certainly got the hang of this maintaining lark. 2 weeks without weighing and I haven't lost an ounce. Trouble is I'm maintaining 5lbs heavier than I'd like. oh well.

DM went home yesterday thank God. I am never allowing a 2week visit again.

I've got a weekend with no work for once so I'm going to make the most of it.

MrsFlorrick · 09/05/2014 18:10

Frenchfancy. Well done! Grin It's so nice when something just ticks along like that.

I'm still maintaining without too much hard work too. Grin

Doing final holiday prep over the next 24hrs. Just packing and sorting out for DH and the DC has totally taken it out of me.
Got the guinea pigs ready for their boarding adventure too.

Had a nightmare carpark incident today. Bit stressed still.
Background to this is that exactly 6 days ago I got my new car. It's "new" to me. It's a 2012 land rover discovery. So fairly new and as it turns out luckily fairly robust Grin
Went to Pets at Home to buy some piggies supplies and I was in a virtually empty carpark.

Woman pulls up next to me in old banger, slams her door open right into mine. V hard!

I get out she starts cackling of how she had "mashed up the shiny motor" Hmm

I was about to start shouting when I looked at my door and saw nothing no dent, no scrape, nothing. However her car door on her Vauxhall had buckled completely in the place it had it my car door handle when she slammed it into mine Shock

I quietly pointed out that it would appear that she had "mashed up her own motor" and she went bright red and mental. Threatened to stab me.

I got out of there quick smart! I'm quite shaken. DC were in the car.

And I can also confirm that land rovers are super strong.

Oh and piggie supplies will now be ordered online.

For reference I had ventured out of the London part of Kent and into Sarf London proper. Clearly a mistake.

Fillybuster · 12/05/2014 15:42

Hello lovely maintaining people....I've been reading but not posting for a bit - sorry :(

Had a fab break and got back to maintenance zone with just one FD on our return, so was feeling all smug and self-assured.

Then disaster struck!

I have no idea how or why (genuinely) but over the past 10 days I've managed to put on somewhere around 7lbs. Seriously.

I was so distressed when I got on the scales yesterday morning :( :( On Thursday I was 9.5, so not great but still at the top end of my maintenance range, after a reasonable FD on Weds. I know I ate waaaay too much on Thursday (long story), but I didn't think I overdid it that much on Friday....Saturdays are always bad, but again, I thought I was quite sensible yesterday.

Yesterday the scales said 9.9; today they said 9.7.8

This is a very long way from good. Although slightly less terrifying than the 9.11 they said on Saturday night (yes, yes, I know that was a bad idea....)

Obvs, it's a FD today. And I really need to get back into the 5:2 rather than 6:1 zone for a bit, I reckon :( :(

On the plus side, I've got 2 positives to report:

  1. I've started riding lessons Grin I've wanted to ride horses since I was 5, but my mother never let me have lessons (too expensive, too much hassle, etc.). It occurred to me last year, as part of my whole 'taking control of my life and being an adult' thing that this was something it was entirely within my control to fix, but then life kept getting in the way. I finally booked my first lesson 2 weeks ago and have had 2 more since....although have now agreed with dh that given the stupidly expensive nature of this hobby I should limit it to once a week!
  1. I bought Black Milk leggings. Specifically, I got [[www.blackmilkclothing.com/collections/leggings/products/galaxy-purple-leggings these]] which I have been wanting for the past 3 years but had promised myself I would only buy once I had lost all the weight I wanted to lose and demonstrated I could keep it off for a bit Blush I luff them....and had tons of compliments when I braved the school run in them last week (although I don't look anywhere near as good as the model in these pics!)

Laska well done for getting back on the wagon - go you!

MrsFlorrick how horrible :( I know how it feels to have a lovely, shiny 'new' (for you) car - I can't imagine how upset I would be if that had happened to me instead of me pranging a great big dent in one whole panel of the back side by wrapping it around a bollard when it was 5 weeks old Enjoy the holiday....I'll try not to be too Envy !

MyWonderfulMimi · 12/05/2014 16:56

Filly, I know just how you feel. I managed to get to my goal recently and then went totally off track with my birthday celebrations and the bank holiday. Like you I've also put weight on and really struggled to get back on track, but I'm fasting today and so far so good. I am looking forward to my dinner though! Hopefully I should be able make it to the end of the day now.

Mrs F There are some horrible people around. Take comfort in the knowledge that you are definitely not one of themSmile

AmericasTorturedBrow · 12/05/2014 17:51

hello all

Laska you are storming! well done you

MrsF that's just crap, what a crazy old bint she was! I see mashed up cars in LA all the time, not surprising the way people drive here.

Scales yesterday morning were 3lbs down, yay - so obviously I then gorged on cake and puddings at a friend's daughter's birthday party Blush it's my birthday today and I've picked at the courgette and pea and home made pesto risotto I've made for dinner tonight, now off for brunch with friends who share my birthday then spending all afternoon in a Korean spa with another birthday twin but brunch is basically my main meal as I'll be home post dinner, bath and bed. Also I'll be biking from place to place.

Best fit in a FD this week I suppose - tomorrow I'm making spaghetti & spiralized courgettes in a lemon avocado sauce for dinner though...although if I don't eat until then I reckon I can keep it under 500cals so that might be the easiest solution.

final countdown to the ride!

Anglaise1 · 12/05/2014 18:08

FF Respect to you for having your mother for 2 weeks. My maximum is 5 days for house guests, I just can't cope with any longer than that.
Happy Birthday ATB - have a great day, it sounds fun, especially biking from place to place! When is your big ride?
Mimi good luck with getting back on track. I always find a good Monday fast sets me up for the week. My scales went up, but only 1kg so I'm fasting today to maintain or get back to 57kgs for my next half marathon race in a couple of weeks. No fasting next week as I'll be doing some carb loading in preparation for it.
