Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 35 - A new year’s resolution you’ll want to keep? Try 5:2 - it's not a diet, it's a lifestyle. Whether you want to shift fat, get healthy or discover some missing self control -

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

MelanieCheeks as long as you enjoyed the meal it doesn't matter. You have just switched your days.

lubeybooby · 14/01/2014 11:02

First FD going well.

Haven't eaten since 8pm yesterday, I've been a late night snacker for ages but gave the the total swerve yesterday and ignored the hungriness (thank you, hints and tips thread!) Been fine this morning and still going, with only a tinsy bit of hunger creeping in again now. I'd be stoked to make it to evening meal time and have my 500 then.

Really hope I can do this :)

NotAsTired · 14/01/2014 11:20

toffee can you include some protein with that lunch? Maybe some chicken? Lean bacon? Or some chickpeas or cannellini beans, if veggie?

MorrisZapp · 14/01/2014 11:21

I think its all a bit of a red herring calling this a way of eating and getting annoyed when others give their opinions.

It is a diet! I'm on it, I'm hoping it works, I like it so far. But it is a diet. Every few years a new diet comes along that is based upon science, is taken up by the media, and has evangelical followers saying 'finally! A diet that works!'.

Then another one comes along soon enough.

It's such a predictable pattern, and of course most people will say yup, seen it all before. That's fine. I'm a cynic myself, but I'm a cynic with hideous love handles and I'm willing to give this a good shot.

Personally I think 'way of eating' sounds over defensive and untrustworthy. I just say I'm on the 5:2 diet.

NotAsTired · 14/01/2014 11:22

FD today. Struggling a bit. My heart is not in it today.

RavenousRunner · 14/01/2014 11:26

Toffee any rocket lying around? I like to mix it in with hot pasta so it wilts a little bit. Something about the pepperiness and contrast in textures makes it very satisfying.

Dotty342kids · 14/01/2014 11:26

Aw notastired, what's up? Can you do something to distract you? Nice and sunny here so quick walk to boost the energy levels? Or can you move today's FD to another day? Or if you can't, but know you won't manage a normal FD, how about making it into a 16:8 day? Smile

LilyJoAndMe · 14/01/2014 11:30

Hello there,
Good luck Lubey. Personally I prefer to keep my 500 cals for the end of the day on FDs. That way I feel less hungry through the night.
I must admit that I generally do feel less hungry when I eat smaller portions now than before I started 5:2.

Well done postman and well done Toffeeeee !!!
That's great news. :) I'm so pleased for you both. And, especially for Toffee coming off that plateau - maybe recently it was linked to body PM waterstorage or something like that ? Just a thought ?
Also, funny to read that you're 11stone 5 and a bit. I have dropped from 76kg (@ 12stone ) down to 72,2kg which I think is also 11 stone 5 and a bit. I'm really pleased with my weight loss - scared of plateauing . But , I'll have to meet that when I come to it.
Well another NFD here. ( waves encouragingly to all those on FD )

Tiredemma · 14/01/2014 11:33

sorry- whats 16.8?

Dotty342kids · 14/01/2014 11:39

Tiredemma it's where you fast for 16hrs, and have an 8 hr "window" in which to eat, but that's not calorie restricted. Some of us find it helpful as a way of keeping in the vague habit of fasting but without having to count calories, at times like holidays or the festive season, for example!
Also, some people like to do two "normal" fast days and a third as a 16:8, rather than go as far as 4:3, it's all very flexible Smile

LilyJoAndMe · 14/01/2014 11:43

Actually Morris I have to beg to differ with you.
When I first started this 5:2ing I had already started something similar to it of my own concoction. I am usually very busy with my work and often skipped lunch - especially if it was very high caloried stuff. Somedays I'd even miss breakfast too.
Unfortunately that was where it ended. I didn't drink more fluids and would have headaches. And when I got out of work I stop at the shops and buy crisps and start munching until my DH came home. Then we'd eat our meal together.
Now, on FD it's much the same as I did before except it's just 2 days a week with a healthy meal planned at the end of the day. And I'm happier about that way of eating for my lifestyle. So, for me , the terms WOE\WOL match how I feel about the whole thing.
I'm concerned about my general well-being and my aging- process and if eating little and well on 2 days a week can bring such improved health benifits, I'm game for this WOE. Smile

Stokey · 14/01/2014 11:48

Hello all

Am on my first fast day. Really just trying it to see how it feels and if I can - not too bothered if it doesn't work out as don't want to lose too much weight, half a stone tops. Am a relatively low BMI already - 21 - so think it is unlikely i'll lose much anyway.

But have made it this far on three cups of tea with splash of milk & getting decidedly peckish. Anyone recommend something I could have for lunch?

Am at work, central London, so lots of places to get stuff but want to save some cals for the evening. Don't really have facilities to heat anything up

TIA

NotAsTired · 14/01/2014 11:49

Thanks for the sympathy,Dotty Smile

I actually feel a bit poorly. Woke up with a sore throat, the kind that hurts to swallow so I have been drinking lots of water and homemade chai tea with fresh ginger in it.

I may go for a 16:8 but I only did 1 fast last week (the first since about early December, I think) and I really wanted to go for 2 this week. It's hard getting back into the swing of things.

NotAsTired · 14/01/2014 11:51

Stokey Soup? Not the creamy kind.

NotAsTired · 14/01/2014 11:53

Sandwich places sell soup, don't they (or m and s hot food to go certainly does)? Or what about sushi from m and s or waitrose?

ErrolTheDragon · 14/01/2014 11:58

MZapp - I won't argue too much with calling it a 'diet':

di·et
noun

  1. food and drink considered in terms of its qualities, composition, and its effects on health: Milk is a wholesome article of diet.
  1. a particular selection of food, especially as designed or prescribed to improve a person's physical condition or to prevent or treat a disease: a diet low in sugar.
  1. such a selection or a limitation on the amount a person eats for reducing weight: No pie for me, I'm on a diet.
  1. the foods eaten, as by a particular person or group: The native diet consists of fish and fruit.
  1. food or feed habitually eaten or provided: The rabbits were fed a diet of carrots and lettuce.

But for some people it's mainly for (3) and for others it really is (2) [The people behind the 'fast diet' book were not overweight] - and of course it's more about when you eat rather than what you eat, which is why 'Way of eating' is actually more accurate than 'diet' as the normal definitions are mostly about the 'what'.

Stokey · 14/01/2014 12:03

Soup sounds good - thanks

Or sushi too, but maybe too high in calories?

Dotty342kids · 14/01/2014 12:04

notastired, think you should tuck yourself up in a warm blanket, with lots of hot liquids and maybe go for some soup for dinner? If veg based you're bound to have enough cals left for a nice soft wholemeal roll or something else easy to eat, with it? Hope you feel better soon!
And yes, it can be hard to get back into it. Can't say as I'm finding fast days quite as easy this side of Christmas Grin

Breadandwine · 14/01/2014 12:26

Later riser here - been catching up with all the positive stories and good humour on here!

Well done especially to you, toffee - you'll now be held up as an example every time someone plateaus!

But don't forget, if you're not losing any weight for a while, while you're fasting you are still gaining the health benefits of this WOL! Smile

LilyJoAndMe · 14/01/2014 12:28

That's true Breadandwine. Thanks for that important reminderSmile

MelanieCheeks · 14/01/2014 12:37

Stokey, most things will have the calories listed on them, so check those first. Sushi can rack up calories pretty quickly due to the rice.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 14/01/2014 12:40

NotasTired and RavenousRunner - thank you for the lunch ideas. I completely forgot about the pasta and with making the cheese and herb bread I am having that with some tinned soup. Oops.

NotasTired - hope you feel better soon.

I am so pleased I have lost but also pleased I have exercised this morning as well. Haven't got the bathrooms done but have done all the washing and ironing, hoovered upstairs, loaded the dishwasher and made mince pies and bread.

curveballs · 14/01/2014 12:50

Afternoon all. Spent my lunch break catching up with thread. Hope FD's are going well for all who are on one!

NFD today and something almost unheard of has just happened to me. Purchased a meal deal for lunch ( was running too late for work to prepare anything), healthy living prawn sandwich and a pack of quavers. Only a third of way through quavers and I just can't eat them! Quite shocked at how quickly this WOE changes your appetite

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 14/01/2014 12:53

Good day Fasters!

Am pages behind, but just wanted to mark my place (now I've figured out what that means !)

and to say.....

} } } TOFFEE WOOHOOOOOOO!! { { {

Congratulations! And if totm too then that should be real loss! Proves the point that sometimes after a stall there can be a bigger loss to follow. I'll have to catch you up again now! Thanks Thanks

Getting easily Confused every time I see the name turkey. Takes me a moment of 'what????' to remember I am Turkey no more!! Grin

This may well have been answered by time I catch up. But for sake of Newbies I suppose it's always worth repeating anyway.....

Birdies and anyone else.... Hunger pains - they don't start, and then continue to grow all day until you eat something. They actually just come in waves. You will have a bout, then once they pass, you might go hours again before next one. So fear them not!

Little tricks to help are.... DRINK WATER (or anything) - gulp it down - fills you up and takes mind off; make yourself a hot drink - tea/coffee/herbal/stock etc; tell yourself to wait 20 mins then you'll decide whether to eat or not - more often than not the moment has passed and you're no longer hungry; do something - activity can be good distraction and if exercise, it can give you some lovely endorphins.

There are others - hopefully someone else will chip in (if they haven't already on next few pages!)

Well I gave up my fast day at 10pm last night! How late!!?? But I was craving leftover curry so much I just had to have it, and it needed using, so was for the good of all Grin.

So back on it today.

Good luck!!!

Southeastdweller · 14/01/2014 13:05

Hi all. FD for me and feeling very bouncy!

stokey Yes, Sushi is good but try to avoid any with rice. I'm also in Central London and my go-to FD lunch is skinny popcorn from either Pret or Itsu and a hot drink like today. Now and then I buy soup or a salad but I can't buy the, often as they're so expensive. I feel fortunate there's so many Itsu's here and will be having their miso soup tonight. They're giving away packets at the branch I've just been in.
