Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 35 - A new year’s resolution you’ll want to keep? Try 5:2 - it's not a diet, it's a lifestyle. Whether you want to shift fat, get healthy or discover some missing self control -

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Tips and Links : Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

Inspirational: eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

Recipes: frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

Exercise: bigchocfrenzy has an incredibly informative and helpful exercise and fitness thread for discussion and advice on combining 5:2 with an exercise regime.

Maintaining: If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

Wayhay, great news, Toffee, you've come through that plateau !
Flowers

lubeybooby · 14/01/2014 14:02

Thanks :o

Still going here apart from a mug of bovril. Amazing how much hunger that quelled. That doesn't count as breaking the fast right? If not then I think I can manage a full 24hrs and just have my dinner at 8pm.

NotAsTired · 14/01/2014 14:05

Toffee? Is that a name change? All that cooking and cleaning reminds me of someone...

LilyJoAndMe · 14/01/2014 14:08

No Lubey,
You can organise your 500 cals as you see best.
You're doing really well. Good luck for the time left. Same to all other fasters out there

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 14/01/2014 14:12

NotasTired - I used to be MissStrawberry Smile.

Does anyone stop weighing during TOTM? I am not sure what to do. I have been weighing every day so I can log it on my Happy Scale app and get a update as to average for the last 7 and 30 days.

NotAsTired · 14/01/2014 14:12

Dotty. I feel a bit better for taking your advice and getting myself outdoors. So thanks for that. Thanks

So, my cold has really come out now. Sneezing and spluttering everywhere, feeling shivery. I will take your advice again, Dotty, and cuddle up to my hottie (hot water bottle, not DP) and cover myself with a blanket until school run time.

Tonight, I am going to have a really spicy chickpea, butternut squash and spinach concoction.

NotAsTired · 14/01/2014 14:14

Ah, I thought so toffee. I only clicked today - am definitely the smartest cookie in the jar. Grin

NotAsTired · 14/01/2014 14:14

That should say not. Grin

Dotty342kids · 14/01/2014 14:19

notastired Glad the advice helped! Tuck up warm and feel better soon and that dinner sounds divine - just what's needed when feeling poorly Smile

I was feeling in danger of heading near the kitchen and was freezing cold so took advantage of the fact that I work from home and took myself upstairs for a hot bath. Half an hour of soaking in the warmth and reading a book whilst at it proved an effective method of warming up and distracting myself Grin. Realise that might not work quite so well for those of you that have to go out to work, sorry!

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 14/01/2014 14:29

Grin NotasTired.

I am resisting the call of the chocolate box. Have rotten AF pain. Feel a bit flat though don't know why Confused. It is cold again which is getting boring now. Half an hour and I will go for DD and DS2.

Stokey · 14/01/2014 14:59

Thanks southeastdweller - should have gone to Itsu

Instead popped into Leon on way to physio & got what I thought to be healthy mackerel & kale salad but turns out to have 275 cals when I got to desk and googled it so have inadvertently eaten more than half my cals.

Still first day so will not feel too bad if I do 600-700 instead of 500 today. Next time will stock up on miso soup - packets from Waitrose only have 13cals

CinammonGirl · 14/01/2014 15:03

First fast day going ok so far - one black coffee, copious amounts of hot water and lemon until I had half a bag of carrot sticks and a dairy Lea triangle at lunchtime. Been for a long walk with DD. Not felt as hungry as I thought I'd feel and plenty of cals left for my roast pepper and cous cous later :) Hope everyone else's fast day is going well.

RavenousRunner · 14/01/2014 15:11

Stokey I like Pret for soups - they have a fair number under 150 calories - and the protein pots are great too.

I went to Abokado, having forgotten why I stopped eating there. Shrimp dumpling udon later and I remembered that their food is saltier than the bloody Dead Sea. Feel quite nasty now, drinking water like crazy and cursing as I'm sure it'll mess up the scales tomorrow. 1900 mg! Are they bonkers?!

Gluezilla · 14/01/2014 15:25

Hi - Can I join?
Started today on the 5:2 .
Am 11 stone aiming to get rid of belly flab and hit 10 stone.

I cant envisage not eating during the day though-wibbles.
Had a boiled egg and a tomato for breakfast, low cal soup and a Kallo Cheese and chive rice cake for lunch and a Satsuma.
Leaves me with a greenbeans, sweetcorn and prawns with lime dressing for dinner.
Am drinking tons of herbal tea to keep me going - current fave is Pukka Liqorice and peppermint.

ErrolTheDragon · 14/01/2014 15:33

dotty - yes, if you're at home a nice warm bath is good for warmth/comfort/distraction instead of food.

even better is if both you and your OH work part-time from home ...

Stokey - well, mackerel and kale salad is healthy, and that's less calories than most bought lunches. You'll be able to manage better later on than if you'd had a sandwich.

Yesterday was my FD, today I had breakfast (yog/fruit/nuts/seeds) at about 10:30 - not really feeling hungry at lunchtime so didn't bother.

ErrolTheDragon · 14/01/2014 15:40

Hello Grace - I'm a white tea addict, but I prefer skimmed to semi anyway. I've started measuring out 300ml on FDs, which is 105 cals - probably more than many would want. But its easier to keep track that way.

Tiredemma · 14/01/2014 15:41

Im so angry with myself- its like I have no self control.

DMIL sent me a parcel for my a birthday ( alovely new scarf)- at the bottom of said parcel was approx 12 various chocolates (cadbury Hero type)

Im afraid I consumed the entire lot.

The day was going so well as well

luciangal1 · 14/01/2014 15:42

Been to the gym and did my 45 mins of Spin class, fasted. Had couple of slices of turkey with green peas, leeks and 3 cubes of beetroot for lunch (we have a chef at work and he does a full lunch, but there's always a healthy bar, i.e. salads, cold meats fruit etc.). Don't know what hubby is cooking this evening, but whatever it is will just have the vegetables and a small piece of whatever meat. Well done to all fasters.

gecko I'm on a fast day too. Try not to worry too much about weight fluctuations, you're trying to win a war not just daily battles.

Fast day is going ok. I'm in with the kids today, think I might be better off taking them out on a fd. Keeping busy seems to help.

Planning veg omelette for dinner plus a few cups of tea. Should bring me in at 795 cals. I'm trying to reduce my fast day calorie intake as it doesn't seem to be impacting my health.

toffee interesting you have less pmt. I never used to get it thought it was getting worse because of age but maybe it was a weight issue instead either that of dh being an annoying nob Grin

BigChocFrenzy · 14/01/2014 16:04

I'm just finishing work for the day, then on to CrossFit at the gym.
