The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV = Non scale victory
Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!
Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.
Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:
All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.
Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!
eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.
frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!
If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.
Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)
A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.
A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!
Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

Just broken my fast with avocado, marmite, tomato, pepper and lemon on toast. Now just realised I can eat nuts! 1 dish of raw nuts and fancy raisin while I noodle on MN and wait for rain to stop. Grin

Now I discovered I had some cake but decided I wanted the nuts and raisins more - that's what this WOE does for you folks - gets you wanting to make better food choices.

This will be my only meal until 4pm as I've got no time, then I'm going to have a very early supper so I'm not wanting to vomit during my first taekwondo class!

Yay!

MorrisZapp · 07/01/2014 09:47

Hello. MZ here, facing my first fast day!

I had a sumptuous brekky of a soreen loaf slice. Feel full thus far

For lunch I am making my own yoghurt snack pot using low fat Greek yoghurt, a bit of all bran, some raspberries and a mere driplet of stevia syrup.

Dinner will be a two egg omelette with a wee bit water in for fluffiness and mustard for flavour, done in fry light.

Tea and coffee when I feel like it.

DP is doing it too but has a different menu planned.

Got a busy day ahead so hoping to make it through. Have told DP that I'm going to do my best but can make no promises. Fingers crossed I can cope when the hunger starts!

TheBitchesOfWeestick · 07/01/2014 09:59

Good luck to all the fasters today :)

I feel ok today although have a headache again - this happened last time I tried 5:2, despite drinking loads of water and herbal tea. Not feeling any craving for sugar, for the first time in quite a while.

RavenousRunner · 07/01/2014 10:01

3 pounds lighter today, and feel so much better! No more Indian for me for quite a while unless I make it myself.

Pathetically excited to see that Pret has a new range of soups - their Souper Healthy range plus half a sandwich or a salad are my standard lunch on NFDs. Kale and leek sounds especially nice.

Two scrambled eggs with a wholewheat tortilla and hot salsa for breakfast - hope that'll get me through this morning's meeting. Plus will remember to sit at the end of the table away from the biscuits.

Reading all of your posts is really helping - cheers!

Elfina · 07/01/2014 10:04

Do I need to calorie count? Following my first fast day yesterday, I'm ravenous. For breakfast I've had two boiled eggs and a piece of smoked mackerel. That's pretty calorific...?

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 07/01/2014 10:13

BigCoc I have bought some mixed flax and oat bran from Holland & Barrett as it was the nearest thing to flax meal they had. The assistant said it is to sprinkle on top of porridge. I wanted to ask you if there was another way I could have it and as I am hoping it will help my hormone dips if there is an optimum time to eat it. I also bought some chia seed for me and for the kids some polenta and seafood peanuts.

Not2bObvious - did you lose anything after our mega fast?

RavenousRunner · 07/01/2014 10:13

Two boiled eggs should be no more than 150 (if they're large) - the mackerel will depend on how big the piece was, but maybe 200-300? So a perfectly reasonable breakfast IMHO, though if I do nothing but protein for breakfast I'm starving in an hour.

MelanieCheeks · 07/01/2014 10:19

Toffee there's a "menopause cake" recipe somewhere - I'm sure you can google it. It contains all thsoe goodies like flaxseed etc. It's quite tasty, but also comes in at around 200 cals per slice.

somewherebecomingrain · 07/01/2014 10:21

elfina
Perfect NFD brekkie.

In my post bf state I did NOT eat 1200 cals of toast this morning, following yesterday's fast.

I had 2 fried eggs on one slice of toast. Circa 5-600 cals I think.

Quite hungry now but not such a sweet tooth. Interesting to see if I can lose more weight. I've sort of given up on losing, but seem to fast naturally from time to time - often don't eat till 2 or 4 pm. It feels cleansing. No impact on weight but feels great.

WhenSheWasBadSheWasExhausted · 07/01/2014 10:24

Sounds like you've got a good day planned there Betsy.

I had a read of your "why did 5:2 not work for you" thread. Was interested in lots of people feeling cold. I always feel cold so it hasn't bothered me but it made me think of people's natural body temps.

My family tend to feel cold, we feel the cold and feel cool to the touch. Whereas dh's family run hot, they never feel cold and feel warm to the touch. My family are quite long lived but dh's family tend to die mid 60s Sad

MrsPear · 07/01/2014 10:39

Hi can I join? I would like to lose 6.5kg. Then I will back to per DC. Today is my first fast day. Think I will do some housework to take my mind off things!

TheRaniOfYawn · 07/01/2014 10:42

I'm back in after a break over Christmas. I wasn't planning on fasting until Thursday but the children are back at school today and I was in a rush to send them off so decided that I might as well fast today and save myself the time it would take to have breakfast.

I am always cold, too. DP laughs at me because I tend to have a wheat bag or hot water bottle spiced down my jumper most of the time between October and May.

BetsyBell · 07/01/2014 10:42

bitches re. headaches - do you normally have caffeine? Caffeine withdrawal is well known for headache inducing. Are you as hydrated as you think? Food is a large source of our water intake so if you take most of the food out of the day you have to drink a lot more to compensate. You might be playing 'catch up' the next day and need to drink a lot more the day after a fast too.

Sugar often gives me headaches.

I need to drink more - Cuckoo I've missed your regular reminders, and my pelvic floor has not been exercised nearly as much recently...

BetsyBell · 07/01/2014 10:43

In lieu of Cuckoo:

CLENCH

DRINK MORE

BetsyBell · 07/01/2014 10:46

whenshewasbad I get colder on fast days, but I've also lost many kilos of fat so it's not surprising! It's always helpful to get a cat to come and sit on your feet I find :3

MrsPear Welcome! Cleaning is an excellent distraction - good luck with your fast day and check in here when you need to :)

BetsyBell · 07/01/2014 10:51

MorrisZap Missed your post! Good luck with your first fast. I recommend getting a big pile of veggies or leaves on the plate with your omelette - most greens are ridiculously low in calories but filling and healthy: win win!

MelanieCheeks · 07/01/2014 10:55

I'm ridiculously proud - my mother has just phoned to tell me she got through her first fast day yesterday!

She was inspired by my success last year, and we talked about it at the weekend, and I suggested she try one day to start with. So she has my Mosely book, and is using it for calorie counting and recipe inspiration.

zedzedzed · 07/01/2014 10:57

Hello! Brand new here, very excisted to give this a try, soooo bored of feeling down about my body in my big tent dresses...I want to wear my jeans! So, I'm starting now, but I'm absolutely TERRIFIED to weigh myself and really hadn't planned to as it tends to make me obsessed/ disheartened...but I guess I'll HAVE to to get my TDEE? (a bit worried that if I don't get my TDEE, as a previous crash-dieter, I'll be tempted to eat far too little on eating days and cock up the metabolism thing again?) I'm 5ft9 and a size 16/18 now and don't excersise much yet, I used to be a 10/12 before my 2 big fat babies in 2yrs! What/how many calories do most people eat on eating days? And on fast days what time do you start counting the fast from? (I'm not up till 6/7am so if I don't eat till 7pm will that count as a 16hr gap?) HELP! Many thanks. X

BetsyBell · 07/01/2014 11:05

zedzedzed You're in the right place :) Welcome. You have told us why you do need to weigh in so do it - and get the tape measure out too. As that weight drops off you'll be glad you did!

Start counting from after your last meal of the day (say Tuesday 7pm), then you can consume 500 calories over the next day (Wednesday) and eat normally (up to your tdee) again on Thursday.

Go and have a look at some of the links in the OP - lots and lots of information for you.

BetsyBell · 07/01/2014 11:06

Yay for your mum MC!

zedzedzed · 07/01/2014 11:09

*excited, obviously too excited to manage my thick fingers!

zedzedzed · 07/01/2014 11:17

Right, brilliant thanks..um, but what's this 16hr gap thingy please? Do I spread out the 500cals evenly across a fast day or leave them all till dinnertime to get a gap? Is one way more effective? I've read all the 'Read This First' bits and the Fast Diet website, I'm still a bit unsure! Doh! Right...will have to head over to Boots to weigh in for my initial TDEE calculations as I've dumped my scales yonks ago and have no intention of bringing them back into my life...I'll be going by descending jeans sizes. X

MorrisZapp · 07/01/2014 11:18

Thanks for the tip Betsy. Think I'll bag some broccoli on the way home :)

hopefulgum · 07/01/2014 12:02

I received the recipe book today (the Mimi Spencer one). I really like it, it has loads of recipes which I am curious to try ( Red lentil tikka masala, Red vege goulash, Vietnamese Sea Bass, Stir fry lemongrass prawns with miracle noodles, White fish stew with Fennel, and loads more...). There's a good run down at the beginning about how the 5:2 WOE works.

Marking my place until tomorrow...

BetsyBell · 07/01/2014 12:07

zedzedzed For weightloss only you can eat the 500 calories however you like. For good fasting benefits it's worth aiming for a 16+ hour gap in eating - this includes time spent sleeping!

So if you finished eating at 7pm on Tuesday then you could have lunch on Wednesday at 1pm and get a lovely 18 hour gap just by missing breakfast. Then, a possibility is to divide your calories between lunch and dinner.

Some people prefer to wait it out so they get a longer fast (drinks only) and so they can have a bigger meal at the end of the day.

There are no hard and fast rules - play around with it and see what suits you best.

I usually do as above (2 small meals), or just a late meal. Occasionally I've gone for breakfast and lunch and had my main fasting hours over the afternoon and night.

And you can adjust your fasting days to suit you. It's a very flexible WOE!
