The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason these threads started!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

Our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

DS1 has made his own packed lunch......

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 13/10/2013 17:20

So looking forward to my FD tomorrow. Ive been feeling bloated and rubbish all weekend, which has led me to eating less today and last night. I think its because AF is paying me a lovely visit.

I survive FDs by knowing how pleased I am when I achieve to eat around the 500 cals mark. Also I have two sayings in my head when it comes to hunger or cravings. One is that knowing hunger comes in waves and the feeling will soon pass, the other is thinking that I wont regret not snacking. I also plan each and every calorie on FD's and stick to it.

I dont know the backstory MissStrawberry but I hope all is OK.

Well done HellesBelles

Talkinpeace · 13/10/2013 17:59

MissStrawberry result Grin

its Sunday night, I'm feeling stuffed, but four days of fasting and healthy eating beckon : I love this WOE

MissStrawberry · 13/10/2013 18:43

DH bought me this today.

A celebration of something we have been through for many many years and have finally had resolution. I intend to make it last for a long time.

Breadandwine · 13/10/2013 19:57

Wow, MissStrawberry! That looks absolutely fantastic - congratulations to both you and your DH!

However, DS1 making his own lunch may well be your best present today!

I also remember you joining us - you've come a long way in a short time!Flowers

MissStrawberry · 13/10/2013 20:25

I really have.

I am feeling really proud of myself at the moment GrinBlush.

FD tomorrow.

BsshBossh · 13/10/2013 20:27

MissS hurrah!

MrsFlorrick · 13/10/2013 21:35

So many great losses on here. It's so impressive.

Well done to today's fasters and good luck to tomorrow's.

Slight oddity this week. I've only done two mini fasts this week and eaten a fair amount over TDEE on NFD. I have not been working out for a whole week due to cold and cough. And still I lost almost 2lbs after a long stall.

Very mystifying. Anyway not knocking it Grin

postmanpatscat · 13/10/2013 22:07

Well done MrsF and MissS and anyone I've missed as I had lots to catch up on.

((mttum)) onwards and upwards, sure the new slimline sober you is a great catch for someone xx

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 13/10/2013 22:18

Has anyone else checked forwards to see when they might meet their weight loss goals? I should hit overwieght in March and Healthy this time next year watch this space. Or thread 45's space, anyway!!

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 14/10/2013 02:33

MissS, so glad to hear you sounding happier. That chocolate slab makes me feel a bit nauseated, which is handy on a FD, but I hope you enjoy it massively.

(I haven't much of a sweet tooth, but I am a danger to any cheese lurking in the vicinity)

Holidays last week for me, but didn't put on weight which is both nice and unexpected. Spring weather coming and going, but fresh food is finally hitting the shops. DH and I (yes, my DH fasts, by the way, to be very late to that straw poll) went to our local fresh markets the other day and tramped around being really fussy about what we bought. Fresh paneer from the Indian restaurant, fresh crusty sourdough bread from the best bakery, heaps of seafood and enough fruit and vegetables to fill two baskets. I'm trying to eat only food that is great quality and see if that helps with how well I feel.

rubbishfamily333 · 14/10/2013 07:18

Hi everyone

Seems like lots of you are doing really well. I think I would like to read the book before starting.

Is there only one 5:2 book or are there a few? And if there are a few which one is the best?

postmanpatscat · 14/10/2013 07:56

Hello rubbishfamily the Michael Mosley/Mimi Spencer version is the original and best. However, if you watch the Horizon prog and read everything on the tips thread and ask us any questions you have, you'll be just as well informed as if you'd read the book!

MissStrawberry · 14/10/2013 08:29

Tortoise - the chocolate was very nice and I admit to one or two small bites more than I should have had but I am not worried. Thinking now really lovely cheese would have been nice but we said years ago if we did what we did we would buy the chocolate slab to celebrate. Neither of us really believed we would ever get to the point of doing what we needed too never mind win.

FD today and I am a bit worried how I will do as I am feeling peckish already and DH has plans to take me shopping so lunch out my feature. I am wondering if I should leave it for today and fast tomorrow instead.

lucyintheskywithdinos · 14/10/2013 08:38

helles if I carry on at my current rate, I'll hit goal just before Christmas. A more realistic aim is before my birthday in March though, as it seems as though the last stone always takes it's time!

MissS Hurray!

I'm ill. Was up most of the night being sick. I actually feel alright now (exhausted, but ok) but I'm going to fast today to help recovery. One of my oldest friends is moving in to our house today...dreadful day to be ill on Sad

eatriskier · 14/10/2013 08:57

helles if I carry on at my current rate I'll hit target in about 6 weeks. Though I'm honestly questioning whether I even want to go that low. So if it's slightly upped in about 3 weeks. Either is a scary prospect as I still haven't figured out how I'm going to maintain.

BsshBossh · 14/10/2013 09:16

helles if all goes to plan and I lose average 1 lb a week then I'll hit target weight (BMI 21) week of Christmas. 10.8 lbs to go exactly. Though I'm in no rush now to lose it by then.

somewherebecomingrain · 14/10/2013 09:22

Hello all.

Any words of encouragement cause I'm really wavering today.

STILL 11.7 on the scales this morning! Back up from a low of 11.2!

Its supposed to be a fd today but Seriously wondering why I do this.

Going to have to log cals. Sad

I think I need to talk to my partner and get him to join me in mindful ness as we often break each others resolve.

PoshPaula · 14/10/2013 09:27

Don't be put off somewhere just look at the long term goal. Think how good you will feel after a day of fasting today.

I am fasting today too so I'll be thinking of you and the others out there who are looking to get through and get fit, slim, healthy....

BsshBossh · 14/10/2013 09:30

somewhere good idea to log calories. I take it you mean for both FDs and NFDs? I don't usually log these days but have done recently to check I'm not over-eating and have found the logging instructive.

somewherebecomingrain · 14/10/2013 09:55

I count cals on FDs but freestyle on NFDs.

Just had three nfds. Was careful on the first, did 18: on the second and pigged out on the third - made a cake and ate fully half. It felt right and good ... I'm sure that's the breastfeeding - I normally don't have such a sweet tooth.

I wish I was at goal and maintaining was enough.

But your words have already helped. I'm putting on the coffee and keeping myself busy.

breadandwine that is fabulous - the 21%. I will look at your link and take note of the evidence. The topic of fasting is a bit sensitive with my dp as he feels badgered. He is very very busy at the moment with work so I think I have to pick my moment.

Thanks again all - I could never do this without you people!

somewherebecomingrain · 14/10/2013 09:56

18:6

Dotty342kids · 14/10/2013 10:42

Morning all. Would normally fast on a Monday but going out for my monthly book group meal tonight so will fast tomorrow instead.
Going to try to hold off till 2.00 this afternoon though, in order to get some sort of 16:8 going on instead Smile

headintheclouds, itsaboatjack and swallowedafly, not seen much of you all recently - hope all is going well for you!
I'm still stuck plateauing at somewhere around 10st6 and know full well that it's down to overeating on NFDs. But because I look and feel ok I've lost motivation to keep on trying to lose. At some point I'll get myself going again Smile

BetsyBell · 14/10/2013 10:42

Good morning everyone.

Nice to hear you so positive MissS.

Mttum Nice to see you back here, sorry to hear you've been going through bad times. Flowers

I think I announced on here that I wasn't going to drink alcohol for a while as it was not quite agreeing with me - it's been over a week now and it's going really well! Occasional pang of wanting a glass of wine but soon disappears. DH joined me with this as he's fending off a cold. Result is we've had a (much needed) ridiculously efficient and productive weekend!

It also means I've been slightly less inclined to eat sweet stuff - even the interesting weekend baking was only profiteroles - 1 tsp sugar in the batter mix and 25g of dark chocolate each.

I have compensated for the lack of sugar and booze by eating vast quantities of home made bread products, butter and cheese, oh and cream (profiteroles).

Blush Grin

Happy Monday fast to those who are. I've just settled a tummy rumble with half a pint of water and 2 cups of black coffee!

BetsyBell · 14/10/2013 10:56

Somewhere First thing to say is don't weigh on a Monday! At least wait till Tuesday when you've fasted and obliterated some of the weekend damage.

Don't lose heart but do log calories/food for a week just to check you're not massively overdoing it on the weekend - it's just a short term thing to assess where the issues are. It's an easy way of being mindful.

Fast days aside, if you know you've over-eaten one day then you need to compensate by equivalent under-eating the next. By logging calories, or keeping a food diary for a little while, you can't delude yourself into thinking that extra helping, extra snack, extra glass of wine, finishing off the kid's portion etc don't add up...

Fast days help with that concept but it's important to balance out the NFDs too.
