Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Bit of a hard FD here today. Both kids around but also DH, which has meant my usual routine is out. Last FD I had intense hunger that was short lived. Today I have low level hunger that won't seem to go away. I think that's more irritating!

Well done whim

Hope everyone starts feeling better soon.

Talkinpeace · 23/09/2013 13:36

decided not to fast today
both DH and I shattered from the weekend and DS just come home ill from school so will fast another day
which is why 5:2 works

BsshBossh · 23/09/2013 14:06

Get well soon JB30 and Helles.
Fab start whimsicalname.
Welcome Biscuits. Hope today's going well for you.
eatriskier oh it's such a pain when normal routines go out of whack. It's why I couldn't fast over the school holidays; and it's also why I've rescheduled a work meeting [that usually involves food] for a NFD this week (just because I can, and also because I want to stick to my Monday/Thursday routine so soon after getting back into 5:2.

FD today, going great. Monday's are always easy for me.

MissStrawberry · 23/09/2013 14:29

Had an horrendously busy morning then yet more bad news but didn't crack as fasting. Had thinnest piece of home made toasted onion bread for breakfast and one tiny home made sausage and apricot roll for lunch. Having diet chef chicken curry (200 and something cals) for dinner so should be fine at claiming FD. Last Diet chef food left, thank fully.

Tomorrow I have an important, difficult meeting so will probably get something nice from M&S to eat on the way home.

somewherebecomingrain · 23/09/2013 15:03

Hello fellow fasters bssh and missS angellabbie and anyone else. Courage, think health, think long life and if your will gets weak think how great your gonna look (or already look!) and betsey I always repeat to myself 'put down that biscuit you can have it tomorrow!'

Misss What is diet chef food?

I'm hopefully going to achieve 650 today. My milky coffees are less cans than I thought - 50 - and if I can stick to three then ill make it. I seem to be gradually eating less on fast days. If I'm feeling relaxed enough I might try a really small dinner of 250 cals - have just made Tarka Dal from the mini spencer fast diet cookbook.

BetsyBell · 23/09/2013 16:14

Fab, thanks estoy :)

Hi. Can I join you all? I'm a seasoned ww and it really works for me if I count the points but I'm bored by it and want to try to change my eating habits. I haven't been watching what I've been eating since June and have been lucky to only put on a few pounds.
I have ten-fourteen pounds that I want to shift and would like to shrink my stomach inside and out Smile
I have just started using MFP and plan to make tomorrow my first fast day.
I have a very social weekend this weekend and was going to wait until next week to start but decided that was only an excuse.
Have read some of the thread and sounds like many of you are doing brilliantly. I'm hoping you'll keep me inspired Smile.

vieenrose · 23/09/2013 16:27

Hello to all fellow fasters
NSV for me at the weekend. I went and bought myself a size 10 pair of skinny bright orange jeans and not only did they fit but I think it's fair to say they look good.
DP told me I looked 15 years younger. I just blurted out that this WOE has brought me back amongst the living. For 10 years after having DS1 and then DS2 I felt I'd been burried alive in 30 pounds of fat. I hope I'm not being to melodramatic but it's truly what I feel like.
Thank you everybody for all your support and keep up the good work

janey1234 · 23/09/2013 16:41

First FD for me. It's not been easy as DS has a cold an is grouchy, so I've been stuck inside breast feeding a baby and being bored! Having said that it's nowhere near as bad as I thought and yesterday I made a v low calorie chickpea curry that we're having for tea. I'm thinking that I can do this relatively easy on a Monday and weds or Thursday, is that what most of you do? Then eat normally on other days?
Really hope this works for me - I want to lose two stone before buying my wedding dress and plan to do that in January... Realistic do you think?
Well done to all of you doing so well - inspiring!

frenchfancy · 23/09/2013 16:44

vienrose I don't think you are being melodramatic at all. I feel the same way. And Grin to the size tens

AngieM2 · 23/09/2013 16:57

Yes vie I feel the same...carried around an extra 14+lbs since having my kids 11 years ago. This plan has been a revelation....wish I'd found it years ago rather than wasting time with WW, SW, slimfast etc...whim I changed gym the week I started this (July) and I'm loving the variety at the new place, I feel so much better than 3 months ago...though I'm blinking starving at the minute (FD)

MissStrawberry · 23/09/2013 17:12

somewhere Diet Chef is a company that supplies all the food you need each month. You say your height and weight and it works out what you need to eat to get to your ideal weight. I did lose some weight but after a few months I was sick of the food and sick of cooking separately and not being able to eat "normal" food and since October had lost nothing. Expensive too.

Last minute appointment so had to produce 2 packed teas for DD and DS1 with very empty cupboards and fridge so I made up muffin mixture and made half olive flavour and the others chocolate chips. Kids happy. I am looking forward to one tomorrow.

silverbeetle · 23/09/2013 17:47

vieenrose that's great well done you Grin. It's so nice to climb out of a fat body and find that there really was a thin one lurking inside.

headintheclouds · 23/09/2013 18:04

FD here for me , nothing to eat yet today. Just 'see through tea'. I'm looking forward to my fish and vegetables . AND if I put on another lb this week like I have for the last 2 I'll be here on Fri morning having a good moan about it. I just don't get it !
Welcome neeko , well done to * whimsical and vieenrose

Hope your dress looked amazing tip
And where are youswallowed ? Not heard from you in ages, hope you are okay.

NotAsTired · 23/09/2013 18:29

vieenrose I felt that I lost myself for a good four years in blubber, but now, I'm back. Feeling great.

FD over. Had Cajun fried fish, 50g of mash and loads of green beans, yum. Just waiting for DP to make me a cup of tea so that I can eat my chocolate with it. I am actually full to the brim, I too find that I don't need to eat much on FD anymore.

missstrawberry homemade sausages? Onion bread? I am seriously impressed. I think I am in awe.

AngieM2 · 23/09/2013 18:46

FD dinner finished. 2 m&s smoked salmon parcels (290 cals) with salad followed by a 10 cal jelly. Might have a cereal bar with a cuppa later - that would bring me in below 400 for today.

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 23/09/2013 18:59

Woo-hoo! Despite lying around all last week eating jam sandwiches and bowls of custard and despite just having eaten and despite not having ?ahem?evacuated for a couple of days, the gp just weighed me and I am down to 14st 0lb - 5lbs lost over the past two weeks :)

MissStrawberry · 23/09/2013 19:04

Well done Helles!

BsshBossh · 23/09/2013 20:01

Well done Helles.
MrsS I am in serious awe at your cooking skills. Please can you share your muffin recipe (especially the one with olives; and could I add feta cheese to it?).
All newbies welcome.

FD over. Broke fast with grapes and apple and will soon eat my customary FD dal and rice.

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 23/09/2013 20:14

I'm having gobi dal for lunch tomorrow bssh but I'm in 2 minds about whether to make it aloo gobi dal.

Itsaboatjack · 23/09/2013 20:23

FD nearly over. I was quite hungry during the day today but fine now, not even head hunger. Not exactly sure what my calorie count was as I had left over spicy lentils and butternut squash bake, I didn't have the cheesy potato topping though, instead had it with rocket salad.

Hope everyone else's FDs went well. I'm going to go back and catch up now as I've not been on here all weekend.

JB30 · 23/09/2013 20:31

Great work Helles My doc was looking at my last visit notes from when the nurse said I was down 6 kgs, sez to me 'I see you've lost loads of weight' I was praying she wouldn't weigh me again! After a weekend of munching I was scared I'd be up 5 pounds lol!
As suspected resp tract - feeling yock

eatriskier · 23/09/2013 20:41

well done helles

well just about got through that day. next FD is weds instead on Thurs. I love when dh takes time off work but it really screws with normality and routine.

MissStrawberry · 23/09/2013 20:44

Bssh feta chees with olives would be amazing. TBH you can add anything you want to olives.

Basic Muffin Recipe -

9oz/250g plain flour
3 teaspoons/15ml baking powder
1/2 teaspoon/2.5ml salt (I never add salt and they still work)
3oz/85g white granulated sugar (I often add half the amount and they still taste lovely)
1 egg
8fl oz/240ml milk
3 fl oz/90 ml corn oil or 3 oz/85g butter, melted

Prepare muffin tins with liners or grease them. Preheat oven to 375-400F/190-200C or gas mark 5-6.

In a large bowl sift together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Stir in sugar and set aside. (I never sift, works fine. You can stir well with a fork if you prefer.)

In a separate bowl beat the egg with a fork and add the milk and then the oil/melted butter.

Pour all liquid ingredients into the dry mixture (add the olives now) and stir until just combined. Only stir for 30 seconds and all the dry flour should be mixed in and is fine that the mixture is lumpy. (Gently add the cheese now).

Fill the muffin cases 3/4 full or to the top for really large muffins. Bake for 20-25 minutes until tops are lightly browned and spring back when pressed gently. Allow to cook in tin for several minutes (they get incredibly hot!). Lovely warm, fine cold, fine the next day but not any longer I wouldn't say.

ENJOY!

MissStrawberry · 23/09/2013 20:46

I am tired, but pleasantly so as had a productive day but feeling a bit spaced out due to it being a FD. How do I sort that?
