Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

MissS, I do admire your energy - and your cooking skills.

Perhaps you need an early night!

Welcome to all the newcomers to the thread - you're in the right place!

Had to smile at your nickname, Biscuit!

I've come to the conclusion there is only one safe way to eat a biscuit - and that's to take one (that's one!) with you when you leave the house. And don't eat it until you're well away from the danger zone! Grin

JB30 · 23/09/2013 21:10

I tried to post but I lost it somehow? I was just saying maybe you should have an early night MissS - prob a bit of light headed'ness/spaced out from hunger?

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 23/09/2013 21:15

FD's definitely benefit from an early night!

So the gp said suspected resp infection JB30? Is it viral? Do you just have to wait it out? I went back today - chest is wheezy but not crackly :)

MissStrawberry · 23/09/2013 21:16

I am going to bed at 10. Another very busy day tomorrow with more emotional pressure too but at least I can eat Grin.

Salbertina · 23/09/2013 21:18

Damn, posted on older thread. Well, i achieved my first fast day in months today, v pleased with self Grin
Hoping on the up now, part of kicking self into gear.
Hello to everyone else!

JB30 · 23/09/2013 21:31

Yep Helles actually laryngitis to be exact, I was saying to her I thought it was resp tract and she said well yeah, it's in the same area. And yep, wait it out, no talking. All viral but to watch I dont start coughing a lot as it could mean its going bacterial while its just viral. I feel very poorly at the min tbh, hot/uncomfortable and very little voice. Rest for next couple of days and hopefully I'll be back to my normal chatty self.
Might wander off to my bed soon. Rubbish sleep last night, tossing/turning/dry cough. Here's hoping for a better night

southeastdweller · 23/09/2013 22:09

Hi everyone. Back from Bristol where much delicious crap was consumed. The foodie scene there is great and I loved every minute, though not so nice having a fire alarm go off due to a small fire in the hotel this morning so we were all evacuated at 5am! I couldn't get back to sleep and have had copious amounts of caffeine and sugar today but also squeezed in some cardio sessions at Pure Gym. Fasting tomorrow as usual and may even do a mini-fast or another fast day later in the week, depending on what the scales say on Wednesday morning...

Going to read back a few pages to catch up on what everyone else has been up to since I last visited on Friday.

Cat98 · 23/09/2013 22:15

Hello!
I haven't been on here for ages but I'm still fasting!
Been doing it since the beginning of June, and I still love this way of eating.
I'm at goal weight, and weirdly I seem to have stabilised here! I'm now doing 1 day of 500 cals and 1 day of 700 cals a week.
Hope everyone is doing ok!
Good luck to tomorrow's fasters. I've just finished my 700 cal day; 500 cals on thurs.

postmanpatscat · 23/09/2013 22:22

Lots of successes today especially helles Flowers to you all!

BsshBossh · 23/09/2013 22:37

MissS thanks for the muffin recipe. I do savoury muffins for DD as an alternative to sandwiches but she finds my recipe a bit too rich (it uses 2 eggs plus yoghurt plus milk). Yours looks lighter. Can't wait to try it.

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 23/09/2013 22:39

What a fast moving thread!!!

Well I had a go today and did quite well. I was on 299 cals so now drinking an options hot choc and have eaten 5 4 segments of popping candy chocolate orange so that's 555 all day. It's a lot better than normal, especially not eating the full chocolate orange in one go Blush OK so it's higher than what I'm allowed but I'm still learning.

Also someone brought in biscuits to work which I avoided Angry Grin

I felt a bit light headed earlier, a bit like I was drunk. I'm assuming it was due to lack of food. Just read up and seen it could be.

Well done on everyone's achievements today.

whimsicalname · 23/09/2013 22:56

Well I've survived the kids' tea - cheese toasties. I let them have loads of ketchup so they ate their crusts instead of me picking at them. Latte for breakfast (100 cal), 2 slices of prosciutto and cantaloupe for lunch andbeef and broccoli stir fry for supper which I haven't had yet. And a trashy novel while my husband takes thekkids to tae kwon do. Bliss!

Dotty342kids · 24/09/2013 06:34

Morning all! DH woke me up when he got up to leave for work at 5.30 so today could be a long day. And, due to having London meetings yest, it's a fast day so may need to check in often today for support Smile

Who's fasting with me today?

EstoyAqui · 24/09/2013 07:00

Morning Dotty I'm still fasting from yesterday and am hoping to go until 7pm tonight. DH is away this evening so I'm going to break my fast with a massive Caeser salad and some crispy grilled bacon crumbled in. He hates that so I save it for when I'm alone and can really enjoy it.

I'm about to weigh myself so wish me luck.

Neeko · 24/09/2013 07:39

First fast for me today Dotty. I'm quite nervous but also strangely excited Smile. Any super tips, anyone?

EstoyAqui · 24/09/2013 07:55

Keep yourself busy. Drink lots of cold water. If you feel like giving up wait for 5 minutes and see how you feel then. Every tummy rumble means your body is burning fat. Try different teas to see which you like. Plan a treat for tomorrow when you've finished.

Good luck. You can do this.

janey1234 · 24/09/2013 08:02

Neeko - I did my first fast day yesterday so am far from an expert! But saved all my calories for dinner and counted down the hours to that. Fresh mint in boiling water really helped. On the whole it really was ok though - and such a good feeling this morning knowing I did it! Plus no desire to eat lots today to 'make up' for it which surprises me!

Good luck

Salbertina · 24/09/2013 08:16

Janey, thats what works for me best too

postmanpatscat · 24/09/2013 08:22

dotty and neeko I'm fasting too. Just having the first of many cups of peppermint tea! Carrot and coriander soup for lunch and that may be all I have today. Gym after work, then plenty of ironing to keep me busy this evening. Teen DC are desperate to make brownies tonight so they might as well cook their own dinner while they're at it Grin DP is away so I can avoid the kitchen apart from the kettle...no, hang on a minute, DC can make my tea while they're in there!

BsshBossh · 24/09/2013 08:26

Neeko remind yourself that whatever it is you are craving today, you can eat it tomorrow. That always keeps me going.

Good luck today's fasters. It's a NFD for me today and tomorrow and I'm actually stuck for what to eat. Didn't bother with breakfast today as wasn't hungry for it and can't think what I fancy for lunch. How times have changed for me.

eatriskier · 24/09/2013 08:33

The day between fasts today. may not be a good one. DS is 1 today so cake to be had. wishing all fasters luck today.

coveredinweetabix · 24/09/2013 08:34

It's time for me to de-lurk as I've been doing this for 4 weeks today and have maintained my weight beautifully but need to lose at least a stone. The first two weeks I did 4:3 and have then done two weeks of 5:2. My problem has been that, after 13 months of calorie counting, I am so excited to have freedom to eat whatever I want on NFDs, that I've got a bit carried away. This wasn't helped by the fact that when I first calculated my TDEE, I did it on the basis that I was exercising 4 or 5 times a week but have actually really struggled with exercise as I find it impossible on fast days (although am going to try to Shred tonight) and have been really busy/away/had poorly DC on the other days so, apart from my weekly Zumba classes, have done no exercise at all.
I tend to fast on Tues and a Fri so am fasting today. I have to say that I find them a real struggle although am gradually learning the tricks that help me and the headaches are lessening.

somewherebecomingrain · 24/09/2013 09:16

Well done newbies janey and bscuit. Good luck neeko this thread is v motivating so by joining it you've helped yourself already.

I'm finally off my plateau. Ok I've done a weigh in after fast day but I always do. Lowest has been 11.5 but today 11.3. I'm sure that isn't going to bounce back up to 11.7.

EstoyAqui · 24/09/2013 09:31

I'M SHOUTING THIS HERE: 69.8kgs.

I AM IN THE 60s

YAY, YAY, YAY, YAY

Self indulgent post over. I never thought I would crack the 70s but I did it. Keep up the great work those who are fasting today. You can do it.

JB30 · 24/09/2013 09:51

Estoy you shout away! That's brilliant, well done
