The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

No not at all Betsy. Im obviously a bit scared, but its good to know some of the points you have made. I think I need to practice this week at being hungry or at least not eating at the first sign of hunger, but to ride the waves so to speak. Then on Friday when I do my next load of grocery shopping I can get some things in to help me keep off hunger and start properly next week.

postmanpatscat · 22/09/2013 16:41

Welcome biscuits Hunger is not the enemy, and when you fancy something on a fast day, just tell yourself 'I can have it tomorrow.'

FD for me today and this is the first time I've sat down apart from in the car or on the toilet Grin Gym this morning, then Asda, then home to cleaning the house and organising my wardrobe, yet again. Got the winter boxes out of storage and they are full of stuff that fit last winter (I started this in Feb) and doesn't touch the sides now! More stuff for Ebay plus with a clear out of my saggy knickers, odd socks etc and the hardly worn t-shirts and summery stuff I have SEVEN carrier bags stuffed full for fabric recycling/charity shops. I think between DP and I we could have filled one of those salvation army bins all by ourselves! The joys of being 35kg lighter :)

Good luck MrsF and my fellow Sunday fasters. I might have something to eat later, maybe not, might just hold out til breakfast.

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 23/09/2013 04:54

Hi all! I've been off the wagon for a few weeks - and I mean properly off the wagon, hoooooo boy - and everything's a bit tight, so here I am again. DH is back on with me, which will hopefully help.

It's finally feeling like spring here, and I'm in the mood for new, summery FD recipes. Trawling the recipe thread, so if anyone has any lovely recent inventions, go post them! (Because it's all about me).

Also have discovered a ready meal palak paneer in my local supermarket, which claims to be 2 servings but adds up to about 160 cals for the TWO servings together. And is delicious. One of those and some rice? Yes please.

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 23/09/2013 06:32

Brilliant nsv EatRiskier a smaller size feels even better than a lower weight.

Good luck today Biscuit, just keep drinking :)

I'm going back to work today after being off all last week with tracheitis during which time I mostly lived on jam sandwiches and stewed fruit with custard. I don't feel 100% yet: my trachea still feels raw and I'm still coughing. How do I know when to start fasting sgain?

JB30 · 23/09/2013 06:40

Helles just looked up tracheitis and am wondering if that's what I'm suffering from? Losing my voice, sore/raw throat, itchy ears, barking cough - generally miserable and unsure if I can make it to workSad Thinking of going to doc today, unsure if it needs anti b's? I wasn't glad to feel this way yesterday but I did think it work help me fast, wrong! Didn't eat til lunch but then made up for it! Amazing what you can force down a sore throat when you make an effort!

postmanpatscat · 23/09/2013 07:22

Get well soon helles and JB

Made it through fast day yesterday without a crumb, just loads of peppermint tea.

Left my Fitbit in the gym changing room on Friday evening, went straight back but it was gone Sad However, the lovely people at Fitbit are sending me a new one, hurrah! Grin

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 23/09/2013 07:38

JB30 do you have a pain level with your heart when you breath? No matter how hard you cough, nothing comes up? When you breath in, your ribs pull in? Breathing is noisy?

There are two forms: viral and bacterial, I tend to get bacterial so I get antibiotics and, because I'm asthmatic, steroids ?yuck?

I hope you haven't got it because it is horrible. Closest I've ever come to dying.

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 23/09/2013 07:57

Postmanpatscat, that's brilliant that they're sending a replacement! I lost my charger a few months back and sent them an email asking how I could buy a replacement (as wasn't on their site) and they sent me a new one gratis. As if I couldn't love them more.

Zero calorie fast, though, that's hardcore.

Hey, can anyone advise me...I'm trying to create a calorie-counted prawn & spinach curry recipe. How many prawns is a reasonable/generous portion, do we think? 200g?

JB30 · 23/09/2013 08:21

Oh god Helles that sounds hideous, no no mine isn't anywhere in that league. Probably a resp tract infection - I'm going to the doctor this avo as while its probably viral, I'll need a note for work as I just can't go - voice is gone, throat and chest very sore. I look like death, ain't no amount of make up get me looking human! Paper bag might be the answer (doubling as mask and breathing apparatus!)
Hungry'ish but I'm going to fast. I reckon I can sleep soon so that'll help

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 23/09/2013 08:44

Tortoise I usually have 90g (no shell)

JB30 it sounds like an upper respiratory tract infection. Or flu. Either way, I hope you feel better soon. Work have tried to send me home already Sad going back to gp though for more antibiotics.

NotAsTired · 23/09/2013 09:08

helles that sounds awful. Hopefully, it will all clear up soon. JB30, I hope you feel better soon. My DS has been suffering from a sore throat, his voice is croaky (he keeps saying that his voice is breaking Grin) and he has started to cough and this morning he said he had a headache. I dread winter because he has a permanent cough until about April. Sad

Anyway, I had a good birthday weekend. Had lovely food but did not overdo it. Back on the FD wagon today.

EstoyAqui · 23/09/2013 09:15

Right, I'm back in. I'm currently still 71.1kgs. The kids are back at school and I'm determined to lose those last few kgs. Today I'm fasting and I'm not going to eat until tomorrow dinner time. A lovely long fast with loads of fruit teas will really kick me back off. Plus I've been scoffing all weekend and feel sick from overdoing it.

BetsyBell · 23/09/2013 09:30

Good morning! Fast day here and just realised my planned meal would (probably) be excellent with cauliflower rice... I've never made it but see it on here all the time so need your tried and tested recipes for it if possible :) - there's none on the recipe thread! Shock

OP posts:
BetsyBell · 23/09/2013 09:33

Hope all you sore-throaters get better soon, I was suffering a bit a couple of weeks ago but luckily it didn't turn into anything nasty. After the most unpleasant bout of tonsillitis last year I really sympathise - I now get the fear everytime my throat's twingy. Rest up if you can xx

OP posts:
wrigglebum · 23/09/2013 09:36

Tortoise- 100g is a very generous portion. I love the hairy dieters prawn curry- you can find it on the forth post here.

JB30 · 23/09/2013 10:02

Ok - rethinking the FD plan for today, I just can't do itSad
Tdee will have to do - that god for the flexibility of this WOL.

EstoyAqui · 23/09/2013 10:56

My cauli rice is adapted from the one Mumsnet gave me to test. I use a whole cauliflower. Blitz it on pulse in the magimix, heat some sesame oil in a wok, add cauliflower and turn heat right down, shake and cover for about 2 mins, drizzle over light soy sauce, shake and generally make sure the flavours are mixed in. Turn heat back up, Add a quick dash of rice wine vinegar or white wine vinegar and it steams up really quickly. Transfer to bowl and eat.

NotAsTired · 23/09/2013 12:15

Jb30. I did think fd for when you are feeling so poorly was a bit ambitious, although I did not like to say! Abandoning fd is probably a good idea. Smile Feed your body with lots of nutrious stuff - do you have soup in, maybe avocado and tomato salad? Take good care of yourself.

NotAsTired · 23/09/2013 12:17

nutritious

JB30 · 23/09/2013 12:21

Oh dear, toast and maltesers probably don't fit into the nutritious category do theyBlush But I've stepped away from the trough now - will make better choices for the rest of the day, didn't manage to get a nap in but might manage it after visit to doc. That'll finish me off for sure!

whimsicalname · 23/09/2013 12:28

Morning all. First weigh in for me and I've lost 4 pounds in a week. I usually have a big dip in my first week of anything, so expect steadier progress in future. Very gratifying though!

Fd for me today and I can't wait to get the kids and theirpesky porridge out of the door. Curiously, one of them has a sore throat too!
Hope you're all feeling better soon.

Doitnow · 23/09/2013 12:32

Morning. Just checking in with the new thread. FD for me too today. Am in the office today. Know what you all mean regarding office snacks. My place is full of them. It's so much easier just knowing you can't have anything rather than just having a little bit.

Hope everyone has a good day.

AngieM2 · 23/09/2013 12:58

whim great start! FD for me, have just done PT session and spin at the gym and right now I would happily eat my own belly button fluff! Seriously feeling the hunger today. Going to go out now and buy a new curtain rail (not to eat) and come back and clean the windows! Living the dream.

JB30 · 23/09/2013 13:02

Brilliant start Whim
Oh Angie serious stomach churn thereConfused That's going help me keep my head out of the fridge.
Doitnow keep reading Angie's post - that'll keep you away from the food lol!

whimsicalname · 23/09/2013 13:28

Thanks guys. I can't believe how much exercise you're doing angie. I content myself with walking to preschool on fds. It is 2miles though, and I do have to cross a 7 lane road. Terrifying! Seeing such immediate progress is definitely making the idea more appealing, although it's not making me any less hungry.
