The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Yes, my bmi is about 21.5 and my thighs rub together rather a lot. They did even when I was a skinny teen so it's just the way I'm built.

Fasted yesterday but probably about 600 calories. Also did the first go at Six Week Six Pack, so I'm a bit sore today!

Bought some new skinny jeans- size 8!!!!! New look sizes seem to come up big.

Downstairs- it's slightly longer and I felt it was easier in some parts and a lot harder in others. It's a different format, no more 3-2-1. You do one set of exercises (mixes up strength and cardio), then you do it again- faster! I certainly worked up a sweat! It felt quite fun and some moves are killers! Just mildly sore rather than totally achey today.

NotAsTired · 08/10/2013 18:51

Fast day over. Did a full 24.5 hour fast today. No fd planned till next Monday as have something going on everyday till then. I'm just glad to have got this one in. I may try to do a couple of 16:8 over the week though. We'll see.

lucyintheskywithdinos · 08/10/2013 19:13

FD over and successful.

One of my housemates cooked the most gorgeous sesame lentils and rice for dinner. It was wonderful. And hopefully will help my post fast day constipation.

Running again in the morning.

I 16:8 on NFDs, so I eat as much lunch and dinner as I like and nothing else.

whimsicalname · 08/10/2013 20:18

Oh my goodness, I just made the mistake of eating a biscuit. Now I want a zillion more. I'm going to have one more and then throw the rest away (they're all smashed up, so totally pickable whilst not being able to tell how many you've had). I bought them for the boys, but they don't like them. What kind of weird children are they?

JB30 · 08/10/2013 20:22

My nfd has been epic! Dd's birthday so lots of treats all round. Hitting about 1900 now, closing the kitchen right now!
Well done to the fasters today, 16:8 mini fast tomorrow for me, the proper FD Thursday. Friday is a day off for me, just for me, no kids, no house work, just me time - cannot WAIT. Them kids are driving me mad. So it's likely to include a good lunch and vino.

wildwater · 08/10/2013 20:25

Talkinpeace - you are an inspiration. Thank you for helping me and so many others. :)

southeastdweller · 08/10/2013 20:30

Feeling better after checking in here after work then going to the gym. Nice food of course planned for tomorrow.

whimsical Biscuits are my weakness so I understand. Can you hide them somewhere? Or even give them to a neighbour?!

whimsicalname · 08/10/2013 20:37

Nope, SE, I had one more and threw them away. Pizza for tea though.

BetsyBell · 08/10/2013 21:14

I really shouldn't watch GBBO. It's not a fast day but I'm now craving cake or chocolate. Luckily there's absolutely nothing in the house as I'm trying to avoid sugary stuff in the week.

Hurrah for empty cupboards - works so much better than will power ever will!

I haven't told anyone but I think I'm going to ditch the booze for a while too - it's really affecting my sleep when I drink at the moment.

It's not the first time fasting has affected my drinking habits but I always think it's better to respond to what your body's telling you so going to stay dry for a while.

(Not that I'm a big drinker! I'm not going to be that deprived... might feel differently on Friday though Grin )

Downstairs Your job sounds perilous! But I bet it's handy for nice freebies Wink

Postman Hope the blood tests results are fine.

janey1234 · 08/10/2013 22:02

Peplum - yes, I am bf too, I guess that might be making me more hungry? But I managed to wait until dinner with the exception of 100g of raw mushrooms (think that's only about 20 cals?) so all in all should be a 700-800 cal day, which is ok I think given advice on here for fasting whilst bf.

Looking forward to breakfast - in bed now to avoid late night snacking!

Well done to others fasting today.

Oh and can someone please explain 16:8 fasting to me too? Do you do that in addition to the normal 2 fast days? Do you think I can do that whilst bf too?

BetsyBell · 08/10/2013 22:23

janey 16:8 is a daily form of fasting and just means eating within an 8 hour window - eg, eating lunch and dinner only. The idea is to keep a good 16 hours of fasting.

Generally I think it's done by people instead of 5:2 rather than as well as.

You might be better off just not snacking on NFDs rather than making life extra complicated for yourself!

Morning all! Lots of successful fasting going on yesterday.

wildwater nice to hear your news, it all sounds idyllic.

Well done wriggle on your new jeans and never mind 'New Look come up big', size 8 is size 8!

southeastdweller · 09/10/2013 06:43

whimsical Well done for chucking the biscuits.

Have a good day everyone. Insomnia's had me up since before 5 but I think plenty of chocolate and caffeine will sort me out today Smile

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 09/10/2013 07:19

I managed to avoid the biscuits too last night. I just kept telling myself I'm going cold turkey and it will be worth it in the long run. I'm hoping that the week after next I won't want them anymore. Managed to get under TDEE yesterday. Another NFD today followed by a FD tomorrow. I can eat again at half 10 then it will be 16 hours since my last feed. I am really determined this week as I know Friday and Saturday will be pig days.

outtolunchagain · 09/10/2013 07:24

Well I think I probably went about 100 calories over my 500 yesterday just because of my late afternoon wobbles, I don't think salad a lunch is good , I just seem to get more hungry , concentration was dreadful at work as well .

Went on the exercise bike in the evening though and hopefully that made up for it .

lucyintheskywithdinos · 09/10/2013 07:42

I'm going to have a moment of being smug...just got in from my run.

NFD here, doing a drizzly picnic in the woods with friends today. Sneaky post FD weight check...still no buggering movement. Keep on keeping on and all that.

jayney I get soooo hungry while bfing a little one. I still bf DD3 but she eats a lot so it doesn't happen any more!

Morning all.

Successful FD yesterday and I've just had a late breakfast of peanut butter on toast.

Wednesday is weigh in for me and I've stayed the same which is fine.

Good luck to everyone fasting today! :)

WilsonFrickett · 09/10/2013 09:55

outto I need protein at lunch esp. if that's my first food. I had some leftover chicken puttanesca the other day which is not the kind of thing I would eat at lunchtime at all normally but it really kept me going for the rest of the day.

lovinfoodainteasy · 09/10/2013 10:47

Hello everyone

I found out about the 5:2 after christmas and started it after 2 months i had lost 9lb ive since put it back on. After trying failing and restarting i realised weighing myself seems to put me back its like i lose some weight and for some reason i stop and go back to my old ways it seems i have issues or some sort of mental block with being happier in myself because i am totally miserable at this weight. I gave myself a shake and two weeks ago started again i have not weighed myself as difficult as its been and hoping i can rely on my clothes being enough of a guidance.

I may need professional help :P however i wondered if anyone else has this problem?

Kx

BsshBossh · 09/10/2013 11:07

lovin welcome! I don't have that problem but last year I weighed every month or so and went simple by my clothes and it worked really well. Some 5:2ers report losing cms but not lbs some weeks so make the tape measure your friend (but if you get obsessed by the tape then just go with your clothes).

Talkinpeace · 09/10/2013 11:07

Lovinfood
are you logging all your food on MFP - and keeping a mood diary - to see what goods you are eating too much of and why.
THere are many, many 'emotional eaters' on this thread : you are not alone.

Go for NSV Non Scales victories. Measure your waist, hips, bust and neck. Do it again after two weeks of fasting. Put the scales away in the garage and let your waistband tell you what you need to know.
