Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 27 - Season of fasts and mellow rumblingness (with apologies to Keats)

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Think I am eating far too much on NFD's. I feel bloated and crap :(

postmanpatscat · 07/10/2013 17:59

Welcome 2much and downstairs to the joys of 5:2. I'm 5ft 4 and now maintaining after 5:2ing my way from 10st 1 to 8st ish. I agree that if you've been that sort of size, it can become harder to stay there especially post-pregnancy. My two are 16 and 14 now, I'm 45 and lighter than I've been in about 18 years (got married 17y ago at about 8st 5) and it seems easier than I ever thought it would be to stay there. You will love this! The main downside is the dent in your bank account from all the new clothes you have to buy to replace the ones that are falling off you!

Well done to all today's fasters Flowers

somewherebecomingrain · 07/10/2013 18:15

Urrr. Fast day nearly over. It isn't a total walk in the park - bsssh u were obviously designed to fast. Well we all were so maybe it will become easier.

Had the lime and pea Dahl from mimi spencer cookbook. The dahls are great - a bit more carb keeps me sane. It's a v good cookbook actually everything devised to be as filling as poss for as few cals as poss.

Anyway reckon I'm off my plateau at last as I was 11.5.5 this morning after three proper Pig Days.

That is half a pound since same time last week.

I'm the tortoise not the hare.

KinkyDorito · 07/10/2013 18:24

Nearly through it with miso, green oxo cubes and a 3 egg omlette with mushrooms and spinach for tea. It was actually better today. Last week at work I found it really hard going, but I didn't wake up as hungry and it was much better. I'm hoping that this is a good sign.

WI this morning; 19lbs in 6 weeks with low carb, lost 5lbs this week having started 5:2. Would love for it to keep coming off at this rate, but not holding my breath!! 19 down, at least 30 to go...

Talkinpeace · 07/10/2013 18:30

WELCOME to the new starters
and hiya to those of us with our own comfy chairs.

Finished my 26 hour fast with a yummy Spanish omelette
(between DH and I - 1/2 onion , 3 x 1/2 pepper - tidying fridge - 3 leeks one pmento and ten small slices of chorizo simmered and then add six small eggs, cook till firm, flip, cook till firm, serve with a slice of bread and butter) which was within a whisker of 400 calories, the rest of the days allowance went on tea.

Fasting is hard when you start because your tummy keeps going WTF
but after a couple of weeks, and keeping the water drinking up, it becomes second nature.

Zombiesheep
Put your food into MFP for a couple of days, just to track, and see what you are eating and whether it is within your TDEE ...

Coveredinweetabix · 07/10/2013 18:40

FD here and really struggling, partly due to a weekend of excess so coming off a sugar high & partly due to exhaustion as DS has had 4 bad nights with his teeth. I try & start FDs by doing 16:8 but only managed 15hrs today. I've had all of my calories for the day now and think I'll get through to the morning especially as going to Zumba tonight will distract me and get me out of the house.
Some more brilliant NSVs.
For those who are tortoises, I am too. It's tedious. But we'll get there in the end! At least this is a WOE I believe in.

BetsyBell · 07/10/2013 18:50

Just made and ate the best soup! Made from a bit of everything in the veg drawer (leek, fennel, carrot, squash, celery, grated ginger, garlic, green beans, 1 chopped tomato), a can of black eye beans plus a big spoon of miso at the end and a sprinkle of mixed sea veg.

Hot, filling and delicious and a couple more portions left in the pan lunches.

No more than 200 calories for a generous portion.

FD for me. It has been OK, still get that mid afternoon pang. Very tired now.

Quick question- I went for a run this morning so obviously MFP says I have 240 extra calories. Do you take these on FDs, or still stick to 500?

Schrod no eating back calories on an FD I'm afraid

Managed 7m straight hooping so obviously Weds wasn't a random occurrence. Did another 3m stint followed by about 3m of many attempts to hoop the other way round.

Talkinpeace · 07/10/2013 19:19

Schrodinger
yup, sorry, no eating back.
Today I swam 3/4 mile, did an hour of yoga and an hour of bodypump
but I stayed within 500 calories
so I had to dip into reserves today : which is the whole plan Smile

somewhere it's taken me 8 months of 5:2ing to find fasting fine. Hang in there all new fasters!

Claricestarling4 · 07/10/2013 20:24

Hello all, I am new to this and have just completed my third Fast Day. I have a stone and a half of baby weight I want to lose. I keep reading on here about The Shred and I'm in the dark - can anyone tell me what that is? Thank you.

lucyintheskywithdinos · 07/10/2013 20:48

Much healthier NFD here today, which I needed after this weekend!

I had Harissa hummus with veggies to dip and grapes for lunch and two bowls of veggie soup and a slice of bread for dinner and a glass of red wine. Fasting now, 24hrs of clear liquid only.

Welcome to the people just starting!

Talkinpeace · 07/10/2013 21:04

THe Shred .....

JB30 · 07/10/2013 21:11

Finished my 1st FD of the week, had a few cals left and was seriously tempted to add another 100 so I could have a small bar BUT I didn't, had a piece of fruit. Kitchen now closed. Lots of compliments on skinniness today, it's really nice but I do feel a bit embarrassed when people notice. I have another 20 or so pounds to go so not there yet, not even half way!
Clarice the shred is a 30 day DVD program by Jillian michaels, 20 mins a day. You might be able to see it on YouTube to get an idea of it. Lots of people swear by it, I've tried but but think I prefer Davina and a bit of running for my exercise needs!
Ooh the food fantasies I'm having for tomorrow...can't wait!

BsshBossh · 07/10/2013 21:31

24 hour FD completed on 200 cals: cup of soup, cox apple, 10 cal jelly. Aside fromthe fruit, not very nutritious... But I'm baking Marcus Wareing's feta and olives savoury muffins tomorrow for lunch (well, will cook them in the morning before school run and work) then homecooked lamb and spinach curry for dinner - much healthier. 2 NFDs - yeehaw!

BsshBossh · 07/10/2013 21:34

JB I'm with you on the food fantasies. I was masochistically flipping through DH's back issues of Gourmet and Bon Appetit magazines this evening, dreaming about what to eat, what to cook...

Claricestarling4 · 07/10/2013 21:45

Thank you very much! I will check it out. Can I also ask another thing - for my first week I naively thought you could eat whatever you wanted on Non Fast Days but I now realise that isn't the case. I worked out my DEE on MFP and it said 1200. This doesn't seem like very much and makes me feel like this is any other diet - ie counting calories every day - which is what I had wanted to aid. Does this seem too low to anyone? I am currently 11st 4 and want to get down to pre pregnancy weight of 9st 8 ish...

WilsonFrickett · 07/10/2013 21:46

somewhere I had that dahl too, it's nice isn't it? I added some steamed asparagus with chilli flakes and didn't even want any of DH's naan. Which in itself is a small victory as I LOVE naan.

Will prob head to bed soon. I find this time of night a bit weird on fast days, I'm not hungry at all but I'm tempted to pick. Boredom probably.

JB30 · 07/10/2013 21:52

Drool Bssh, I'd say there's some good food in them pages. Dd's birthday tomorrow and she wants to go out for tea, but burgers & chips just don't ring my bellSad
I'd love something fresh/flavoursome, maybe Thai - I just might let her have her wont, have a coffee and bring home something nice from the shops. I resent wasting my hard earned cals on McD's! Did it a couple of weeks ago, had shag all and it still at least 600 cals, jeez I could have something really good that wouldn't lie in my gut for half the week! Oh the changes, isn't it great
