Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 27 - Season of fasts and mellow rumblingness (with apologies to Keats)

BetsyBell · 19/09/2013 16:58

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Clarice don't worry - you can eat much more than that :) Work your TDEE out from the link in Betsy's OP. The 1200 figure MFP gave you is their generic "eat 1200 cals a day to lose 2 lbs a week" (you most likely didn't set MFP to "maintain").

BetsyBell · 07/10/2013 21:55

Clarice MFP works out how many calories you should be allowed each day according to whatever weightloss setting you've input - you should set it to 'no weightloss' if possible as it doesn't allow for 500 calorie fast days.

There's a TDEE calculator link in the OP - try that one instead. Or if you put your height/weight/age on here I'm happy to do it for you.

BetsyBell · 07/10/2013 21:58

Just realised I've probably done a 300 calorie day at most. No wonder I'm feeling a bit rumbly now! Ah well, bed time soon for me anyway :)

OP posts:
Claricestarling4 · 07/10/2013 22:07

Ah I see - didn't realise that - I have much to learn! My height is 5ft 5, weight 11st 4' age 39. Thank you BetsyBell for such a kind offer.

NotAsTired · 07/10/2013 22:08

Clarice set MFP to maintain your weight, not lose weight.

BetsyBell · 07/10/2013 22:14

Clarice Set to 'no exercise' you can have 1750 calories on non fast days or 2005 on days you are exercising!

As you are aiming to lose weight I would try to eat around 1750 most weekdays and perhaps more like 2000 at weekends or special event days.

That will feel like plenty, especially after a few 500 calorie fast days :)

Oh, a word of warning, your TDEE goes down as you lose weight so it's worth rechecking from time to time - TDEE calculator here

Hi all, I started doing the 5:2 last week...I did my two days fasting (Tuesday & Thursday) lost 1 1/2lb and bloating in tummy went down...but after the four days of normal eating that followed, I'm now back to how I was! Is this normal until the body gets used to it, or is it just not going to work for me? Do I persevere?! Help!

Talkinpeace · 07/10/2013 22:28

persevere
this is for the rest of your life, not a few weeks
give your system time to get used to the new way you eat
and remember to check that your "normal" is not overeating ....

ArtDecoGirly · 07/10/2013 22:30

I don't really overeat...never had a big appetite, though I do love my pasta and olive oil and cheese... Blush

whimsicalname · 07/10/2013 22:49

Coming to the end of my days' food and still have to endure taking all 4 kids to the older 2's tae kwon do class. Normally my husband takes them and our 3yo soi get 2hrs peace with the baby. And it's raining so we can't even go to the play area. I might treat myself to a low cal hot choc on return. Roll on tomorrow!

whimsicalname · 08/10/2013 02:00

Well I did it (although I know you're all tucked up by now). Survived tae kwon do, kids all asleep and I'm about to watch West Wing with 8 dark chocolate chips (35cal) and a herbal tea. I'm really quite pleased with myself. Hope everyone else had a good fd.

postmanpatscat · 08/10/2013 06:13

Well done whimsical, you made it!

duckyfuzz · 08/10/2013 07:17

Morning all. I did 5:2 in the spring and found it great, but lost track over the summer hols so am starting again, will aim to do either mon/tues and weds/thurs usually - work varies from week to week so will fiti it in when I nw I can fast and am not in a social situation! Trying to shed and/or run as well... Oh and I have a wedding to attend on 26 oct and if I can slim down I can either fit into my fav dress or get a new one Grin

Off to read about everyone else now...

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 08/10/2013 07:19

I did it too Grin my first successful FD. Last night was the hardest as that is when me and DH eat crap. Though DH weighed himself on Sunday and was heavier than he thought so he agreed to not eat on a night, but oh no last night he was hungry. So he ate and I didn't.

Well done whimsical

lucyintheskywithdinos · 08/10/2013 07:47

biscuits evenings are my problem too. DP brings snacks home a lot, but is starting to do it less after I had a bit of a tantrum about 'sabotage'! Not a tactic I recommend though really Grin

FD here, usual busy Tuesday planned. Hoping my kettle bell arrives so I can do some weights later!

outtolunchagain · 08/10/2013 07:55

Sucky fizz, I also did 5:2 earlier in the year but gave up over the summer, need to get back onto it now , have done the odd fast day but its all a bit ad hoc I think I need to be in more of a routine.

The early evening is the worst for me when I get back from the school run.

outtolunchagain · 08/10/2013 07:59

Stupid iPad. , obviously that was aimed at Duckyfizz

Claricestarling4 · 08/10/2013 08:39

Thank you Betsy that is really helpful - that sounds much more manageable. Fingers crossed...

Coveredinweetabix · 08/10/2013 08:59

A couple of questions:

  • what do you have for breakfast on NFDs, especially those following a FD? Having spent yesterday day dreaming about one of those flavoured porridge sachets, I decided this morning I didn't't want to sully my body with all of that sugar. None of the other cereals in the cupboard appealed either so I went for yogurt with a chopped bananas and berries. Can you give me some other quick & easy ideas?
  • for those of you with a BMI of 23, do your thighs rub together? Mine have for decades but then I haven't had a BMI of less than 25.5 for decades. I'm hoping to (eventually) get down to 23 and would love to get rid of that as it's so uncomfortable in the summer.

whimsical & biscuits - well done for completing a FD. My way of avoiding munchies in the evening has been to eat with the children rather than DP as, not only does it mean I don't eat the children's leftovers as I've had my own meal with them, but don't start eating with DP and so don't get sucked into eating whatever he is eating afterwards. And I now try & do some exercise in the evening and, after Shredding or similar, there's no way I'm going to ruin that effort by eating cr**.

artdeco - some people lose weight really quickly on this woe, others more slowly. I'm one of the latter. What I have become more aware of is how my body reacts to certain foods and that if on my NFDs I eat loads if rubbish, then I get really bloated and the weight goes back up again.

eatriskier · 08/10/2013 09:03

well done whim. I used to find fasting on days when I had a full compliment of kids easier but in the end I had to switch.

covered I have porridge most mornings made with almond milk, peanut butter and jam. I've found it a great way to get my peanut butter hit whilst only using a small amount of it. Keeps me nicely full till lunchtime and only costs me about 270 calories.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 08/10/2013 09:33

Morning everyone - FD for me today.

covered I normally have natural yoghurt and chopped plums or some berries on top of a granola/muesli mixture I make myself (to keep the sugar down), and I also add flaxseed.
I often don't have it until after I've done the school run and I'm properly hungry.
Another favourite is wholemeal toast with whole nut peanut butter which has no sugar added.

NSV today - 1.5 inches suddenly gone from hips and my c-section apron/pouch is noticeably smaller. Grin

BetsyBell · 08/10/2013 10:24

CoveredinWeetabix I'm currently BMI 23, pear shaped so tend towards the larger thighs (see my profile photo!) - I've been on this WOE since January (started 11.2stone, bmi 25.5) and I don't think my thighs have rubbed together since before Easter - so at around 10.5 stone maybe? Took about 9 weeks of 5:2 (plus exercise and healthy eating).

First summer in years I haven't suffered the chafing or worn through my linen trousers! It's brilliant Grin

I usually have a fruit & yogurt with a sprinkle of muesli post fast breakfast. Today I had an english muffin with fried egg, slice of ham, tomato & salad. My favourite is slice of vogel toast with marmite, avocado, tomato slices and lots of pepper.

I usually eat after the school run if I'm having breakfast.
