The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

OK, weigh in on morning after second fast day - I can do that bssh. Thanks to you and Betsy.

Talkinpeace · 07/10/2013 12:42

wilson
put your plate of food on the scales before you eat it .... now the whole weekend's food, and the water and the booze ....
take into account that by eating three meals a day your body cannot finish digesting anything ....
all that food is stored in your stomach and colon and as fluid in body tissues.
Now fast twice in the week and eat frugally from Monday to Friday lunch ....

when I came back from two weeks in NY last Christmas I shifted the 7lb I'd gained in two weeks ....

short term weight gain is undigested food and water.
It goes away again almost as fast
one of the great revelations of this WOE for a lot of people ....

Hello all

Just a quickie as I am about to go to a friend's for lunch so tomorrow I will fast. I am eating less than I used too because I only eat when hungry and properly hungry at that Shock only taken since August to get it after God knows how many years of doing it all wrong.

I got the tape measure out this morning. 7cm off my thighs since July 12 and 17cm off my tummy. Shock.

I just love the lack of fear and angst about food.

whimsicalname · 07/10/2013 13:27

Good work missS. And thanks for the stern words talk I could do with a bit more frugal and a bit less mid week dinner party.

I weighed in at 140.5 pounds. I would have liked to have cracked 10st but am not surprised I didn't. I did have aninteresting experience at a barbecue on Saturday - a rather large, male colleague of my husband's was telling me how much weight I've lost (i had a month old baby last I saw him) and wondering how I'd done it. It felt good to be able to say 'i eat less and exercise more'. It really is that simple!

I did think I was going to do 16.8 today, but I've realised if I do I won't be able to go for my post preschool drop off latte. What a quandary!

Happy fasting to you all.

Pollysbubble · 07/10/2013 13:31

Monday fast day for me - I am such a creature I habit!
But need it more than usual this week after a very over indulgent weekend, including a hen night on Saturday and then a big takeaway curry last night.
Was actually really looking forward to fasting today, and so far so good - lots of water and a couple of cups of tea. Busy day at work is helping to distract me!

Wilson, others have put it much better than I could, but to add my own experience as well, my weight definitely bounces up a few lbs after a weekend/big meal out but seems to settle after a few days (including a fast!), and it definitely helps to look at the overall trend of your weigh ins, rather than worry too much if one shows a weight gain.

MissS, fab inch losses - well done you!

As always, lots of inspiration and motivation on here, well done to all successes, and fellow Monday fasters - keep going and stay strong! ;-)

Abandoned fd today as DS ill and at home. We both slept really badly last night, I have zero energy. Never mind, I'll do fd tomorrow.

Frugal is my new weekday watchword, thank you talk

eatriskier · 07/10/2013 13:35

dotty glad it's coming on for you. I managed to do 10 mins with no stop on weds but have felt so rank I haven't really exercised since. Am planning on hooping again tonight though so I will let you know if that was a one hit wonder!

Talkinpeace · 07/10/2013 13:39

Downstairs Welcome. You are a skinnymalink then !
I'm 5'5 and trying to get down from 9 st to 8 1/2 (so I have Christmas leeway basically).
Your TDEE will be low so your calorie deficit from fasts wont be huge, but you should still be able to do just under a pound a week loss.
Fasts not together is definitely more sustainable ... as this is for the rest of your life ...

wrigglebum · 07/10/2013 13:44

Go MissS! Excellent loss and change of mentality.

Fast day here after a week off. Just been swimming with DS, then got him a cheese and onion pasty. Was hard putting the leftovers in a bag rather than scoffing them! Had a tiny taste and actually I wasn't missing out on much. If I can get out from under a sleeping toddler I'm going to try starting my six week six pack DVD, but it's not looking promising right now!

Will have a cuppa soup for lunch, and maybe a pickled egg if I do manage the workout (for protein Grin). Then chicken curry with minimal rice this evening.

wrigglebum · 07/10/2013 13:46

Hi downstairs, glad you made it over.

Dotty- I can do 10 mins continuous rotating one way and about 4 mins the other way. Love my hoop!

PoshPaula · 07/10/2013 14:15

Tomorrow seems quite a long way away at the moment.

Talkinpeace · 07/10/2013 14:18

((Poshpaula))
stay busy, drink lots of water - you'll be fine

skinnymalink : somebody who feels overweight with a BMI of 22 !
I would say stick to two fast days as you want to lose the weight gently and be lean rather than getting too thin.

Am working on my different build / bodyshape / lean information. Will post when I get my head round it.

MissS fab inch loss and great new mentality overall. You are a pro :)
Welcome Downstairs. I think it's terrific you've realised at the compared-to-me young age of 26 that we can't eat as much as we used to as we age. If I'd realised that in my 20s the weight would never have crept up to BMI 36. It just never clicked that TDEE reduces with age even if you weigh the same.

2muchmess · 07/10/2013 16:19

Hi all, I've started today. I'm 37 and have 4 children between the ages of 12 and 2. Until the summer I was pretty lean but am definitely more tubby now than i feel comfortable with. i'm 5 foot 4 and 9 stone 6, and am normally 8.12/8.13 so am giving this a try to get back to that. my clothes have been getting tighter and i didn't have much of a chance to work out properly over the summer so i think that and my chocolate/cake/biscuit habit have caught up with me...
so i'm hoping that i can do this - i'm working today, which i think is easier than sitting at home with my toddler. i'll try and work out all the numbers a bit later. i've lurked on here for a little while and thought i'd join in.

BetsyBell · 07/10/2013 16:19

DownstairsMixUp I would concur with others - do 2 fasts a week rather than 3.

A few reasons:
-It takes a while for your body to get used to fasting
-Anecdotal evidence suggests weight loss rate is similar for 5:2 and 4:3 (1lb a week)
-It's a lifestyle change not a quick fix diet
-2 days a week is relatively easy and sustainable, 3 days much less so

And from my own personal experience I felt I had 'permission' to eat in larger quantities on NFDs when doing 4:3, which rather defeated the purpose, whereas 2 fast days seems to lead to better self-regulation throughout the week.

As you have a low BMI already you may find you don't lose at a fast rate, but you will lose and if you get on with this WOE and continue it you won't put it back on again (see 'lifestyle change' above!)

BsshBossh · 07/10/2013 16:50

FD going well. Not hungry again. No lightheadedness or crabby mood. Didn't even feel cold today, which is unusual. I guess the weekend indulgent eating has fueled me well today Grin. Might try for just a light broth soup in a mug tonight rather than a 500 cal dinner.

eatriskier · 07/10/2013 16:55

Fast day going ok here except I had no food plan so have had to think a bit more about food than I like. Ended up getting a cottage pie which I will team up with a cup a soup, a low cal jelly and a yoghurt for tonight's fasting feast. Feeling quite chuffed with myself and then got home to discover the cereal fairies had arrived whilst I was out and left me a box of Special K and a Special K bar on my doorstep. Have thrown them in the kitchen and am sitting here shivering (in a cold way, not in a cereal withdrawal way Wink)

whimsicalname · 07/10/2013 16:57

Blimey I'm surrounded by teeny tiny people! I'm also 5'5but aiming for 133lbs. I think less than that I would look thin rather than healthy. Although that's entirely speculation as I've never weighed that little before. Well obviously I wasn't born 10st, but it's been a while!

whimsicalname · 07/10/2013 17:01

Oh, and welcome 2muchness. I have 4 kiddos too, though a bit younger than yours. I definitely try and limit exposure to them on fds - for their sake as much as mine!

Dotty342kids · 07/10/2013 17:04

well succumbed to a little bit of Dairy Milk an hour or so ago but other than that, fast day going ok. Looking forward to lentil pie and broccoli for dinner in an hour or so!
As for my fellow hoopers - I am in awe, can't manage more than 1 min of consecutive hooping at present but you've inspired me to give it another go tonight! Smile
