Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

FD today went really well as I didn't feel hungry at all but at dinner I think I did go over 500cals maybe around 650 not too bad though. Does anyone here do 4:3? Am thinking of mixing it up. Wish I didn't eat as much now though as I have a stomach ache! Maybe my stomach has shrunk!

BsshBossh · 06/10/2013 19:37

FD for me too tomorrow. Bring it on Grin.

Talkinpeace · 06/10/2013 20:02

Bssh Those pictures are astounding .... need to link them into the tips and hints thread as they REALLY help to visualise what weight loss does for the body.

Ate lots this weekend. Looking forward to nothing tomorrow

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 06/10/2013 20:03

FD for me too tomorrow and Thurs. This week I am going to do it. Bring it on Grin Its week 3 of me doing this, but Ive not had 2 fast days yet. Been lots of practice and now I am confident I can do this.

Good luck everone

MelanieCheeks · 06/10/2013 20:06

Usual Monday fast for me. Was at a party last night, still recovering today, so a fast will feel good. I try to have little treats lined up for fast days- I'll be doing a running training session after work, so I'll have a face pack and foot massage afterwards.

BsshBossh · 06/10/2013 20:42

TIP it's on Tips and Hints now.

southeastdweller · 06/10/2013 20:50

Sobering pics there Bssh. I too won't ever get obese again or even overweight. As well as fellow faster Sheila Hancock who weighs herself regularly, I was reading this week that the Hairy Bikers also do this. Now I'm maintaining I don't want to ever let complacency slip in and thus ease off weighing.

Reporting that the new orange flavour of Green and Blacks was quite underwhelming. Hopefully the lemon one is better.

Good luck everyone who's fasting tomorrow.

eatriskier · 06/10/2013 20:52

Monday fast for me too. Though I'm currently enjoying a shot of baileys to calm myself down a bit from being slammed into a shop window by some idiotic football fans (at least it is a nominated drinking day)

southeastdweller · 06/10/2013 21:06

Fab pics wriggle and eatriskier Flowers

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 06/10/2013 21:12

Lovely weekend here. Eaten some lovely food. Tomorrow is a NFD for me, but I always eat far less than over the weekend.
Actually having said that we went out for lunch and I left half the bun from my burger. Had dessert, but then I haven't eaten anything since until a few squares of chocolate just now.

Southeast - I am eating some of the lemon right now. I really like it - not as much as I like the Lindt Blueberry Intense! - but DH isn't keen. He is more of a milk chocolate fan though.

southeastdweller · 06/10/2013 21:13

zombie I did a couple of months on 4:3 and didn't find it hard. Try it for a week and see how you get on. Nothing to lose except money and flab!

Sophiste · 06/10/2013 22:38

Twinmama32 and anyone else who shops at Stratford Westfield - can I recommend the excellent Pasta Remoli, near Waitrose on the ground floor, for a truly delicious gastronomic treat (see also lots of rave reviews on Tripadvisor). Strictly for NFDs but they'll do a small portion if you ask too.

whimsicalname · 06/10/2013 22:43

Weigh day and fd for me tomorrow too, after a weekend of indulgence and fun. My husband's away so I may cave and do 16:8. I'll see how much sleep I get tonight I think.

Neeko · 07/10/2013 07:43

Morning all. Wi day for me today. Nol loss but had a cocktail evening on sat followed by a carb-feat yesterday and there's no gain either so I'm happy. Glad to be back on a FD today- never thought I'd say that.
Coffee for "breakfast", carrot soup at lunch and some fish fingers and ratatouille for dinner. Yum Smile
So impressed by those pictures. Those of you who have been doing this a long time really motivate me - thanks!
Have a good date everyone.

Dotty342kids · 07/10/2013 07:49

Morning all! Great pics and lovely news from lots of you. I echo the buying jeans so that they feel tight, so that when they loosen off, they fit properly! though in the case of us 5:2ers I think we should buy them when we can barely do them up so that we get some wear out of them before they become too big entirely Grin

I managed a mini fast on Saturday after my terrible week last week and went through to 8pm when husband arrived home from being away all week. Then had a chinese takeaway which clearly wasn't great, but it was better than eating that on top of a day's normal food!

Fast day today and am going to be flat out shortlisting a gazillion job application forms so that should keep me well away from food.
Catch up with you all later!

lucyintheskywithdinos · 07/10/2013 07:49

NFD here again, but having a fewer carbs day as the weekend was carb overload.

Did my first c25k run this morning. It was great, I really enjoyed being in the park so early and on my own! lots of other exercisers and a couple of people meditating.

Happy fasting everyone!

eatriskier · 07/10/2013 09:09

All seems a lot better here. Feeling well enough to fast, though not quite feeling up to getting on my cross trainer. Baby steps. Good luck all fellow fasters

Bramblesinforrin · 07/10/2013 09:37

Morning fasters! Popping in to wave. Was a regular 5:2er earlier this yr and lost 1 1/2 stone and 2 dress sizes Jan - June. Now maintaining, bunging in a fd most weeks. It's the interesting part of the year for other days, however, as its the season of high carb stuff. Doing well so far!

I've managed to maintain where I got to - loving that scan photo bssh, it sums up one of the reasons for doing it for me.

My bestie has also been doing 5:2 and has lost 1.5 stones, we were saying how unlike other 'diets' the fat seems to have melted from all over.

It's interesting now trying to find winter stuff in the wardrobe that fits - down to wearing the same one or two things for work as the rest are falling off.

It's bras that I'm going through refittings for - gone from a 36 band to a 32, although the fitter was suggesting a 30 at the weekend. I prefer being able to breathe!

PoshPaula · 07/10/2013 09:46

Fasting today, hope to keep really busy at work. So far I've eaten one grapefruit and drank a cup of tea (I have to get up very early and do a long drive). I am so hoping to start seeing a difference. Good luck to fellow fasters today.

BsshBossh · 07/10/2013 10:43

eatriskier, wriggle you both look amaaaazzzzing!

Dotty342kids · 07/10/2013 10:46

eatriskier the hula hooping is progressing though it's still hard - but that's the point I guess! The bruising is receeding too so hoping to do a bit more each day Grin. How long are you managing it for? Annoyingly my 10yr old DS can do it for aaaaages!

WilsonFrickett · 07/10/2013 10:46

EEK

So weighed myself on Friday (after 2 weeks of 5:2) and had lost five pounds. Was Grin, obviously. Went away for the weekend (and yes, I did eat and drink lots but not really pigging out, no snacks, a three course dinner/two course lunch but made good choices I thought) and the weight has all come back on! Is this normal? I thought one of the benefits of this woe was that it wasn't a yo-yo diet?

Confused! Can anyone explain what's going on?

BsshBossh · 07/10/2013 10:48

Brambles welcome back and excellent news on the maintaining.

BetsyBell · 07/10/2013 11:24

New thread time soon - anyone got anything they particularly want expressed in number 28's title? PM me :)

WilsonF Lots of water retention probably - weigh again after a fast day and it should all look a bit more normal. Your body uses lots of water when processing salt and carbs so if you've had a blow-out weekend then...

Bssh - that pic is very interesting, the strain on those poor joints and enlarged organs are eye opening.

Hello Brambles isn't stress-free maintenance just brilliant? Its fun losing and all but just love the ease of not piling it all back on while I've stopped paying attention!

Happy Monday fasting to those who are!

BsshBossh · 07/10/2013 11:36

Wilson it's not a real gain in terms of body fat, don't panic. Your digestive system will still be processing the weekend's food and your body will be retaining water. I can gain 5lbs in the course of a day! Just weigh yourself once a week - always at the same time/day (preferably day after second fast first thing in morning).
