Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 27 - Season of fasts and mellow rumblingness (with apologies to Keats)

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Thanks Talk. That sounds too easy! I might try and just do 1000 cal in 8 hours, as that's still 2 decent meals. Then if I do that alternate days, that's basically the same as fasting twice. Really I can manage not to snack, it's picking at things around meal times that's my downfall. I've just brushed my teeth, for example, so when I give my 3yo toast before preschool i'm not tempted by the crusts!

Coveredinweetabix · 04/10/2013 14:22

Another FD here as doing 4:3 this week as I want to properly get under 11st. I was hoping to do a 24hr fast but then went to a meeting at lunchtime (18hrs in) where they had baked potatoes and I caved. How calorific is quorn mince? The only topping option was chili con carne or a veggie version. I went for the latter and had a smallish portion but am still concerned about the calorie count. Earlier this week, I had a jacket potato around this time and then didn't eat for the rest of the day so I'm aiming to do that again so that the FD isn't a write off.

Some more excellent NSVs. Its so encouraging.
For whoever was asking about bowel movements, mine have been much more erratic since starting this WOE. I'm also looking more bloated on NFD. I think this is partly because my stomach is generally looking flatter on a FD (and due to the Shred) and because the contrast between pretty much refined sugar free FDs and then having refined sugar on my NFDs means that there is more of a change for my body to cope with.

Preciousdaisybear · 04/10/2013 16:06

End of week 1 for me and I am down 3lbs which I am really pleased with. Even survived the Parents' Evening fancy pieces (sorely tempted though).
Ironically my Weight Watchers meal at end of FD yesterday contained heaps of rice which I generally avoid like the plague. Note to self: check contents of ready meal not just the calorie content. Looking forward to Wine tonight.

How many here shred? I have the DVD on my shelf still in its cellophane. Should I open it?

PS well done everyone on their losses this week. I love this thread.

Preciousdaisybear · 04/10/2013 16:12

Also just realised I am down to BMI 29. Feels really good not to be in the obese category any more.

Coveredinweetabix · 04/10/2013 16:21

Yes, do open the cellophane! Mine spent 12 months wrapped in cellophane and then I opened it and its not as bad as I feared. The first time I watched it, I was sat on the sofa with a cup of tea. That got me over the fear factor. Yes, it hurt, especially on Day 3 but its amazing. I struggle to do it every day as, despite it only taking 20 mins, I don't seem to have that much spare time each day but do manage it every other day.

southeastdweller · 04/10/2013 16:30

Well done head, mrsf, helles, eat, Precious, Bssh and notastired. Lots of positivity today which is so nice to read.

PoshP Not losing for a week and gaining a little is nothing to worry about but when you say you ‘eat very moderately on NFD’s’ could it be you’re not eating enough? Because you need to be aiming for a consistent marked contrast. Please hang on in there.

Dotty Sympathies for biscuitgate last night! I agree with others on skinny popcorn which is my FD work lunch along with coffee. Also recommend when you’re at home at night having a hot drink which lasts ages. Or some protein - a handful of olives for example. If I get biscuits I give them away or chuck them, though I appreciate that’s easier with no kids. I’ve been known in the past to scoff a whole packet of Maryland cookies Blush.

Dental check-up tomorrow at 11am on the other side of London so may do an extra FD…I’ll see how I feel.

Enjoy your weekends all. Off now to Greggs for my twice weekly dirty food treat…

KinkyDorito · 04/10/2013 16:43

Really tough 2nd FD today. I've been hungry all day, which I didn't feel as much on the first FD. I was starving when I got up, so ended up eating a 60kcal tin of tuna when I'd planned not to have breakfast. Have had a cup of miso and a green oxo cube. Will 'spend' rest of cals on dinner. I've just found it far tougher. Will it get easier?

Dotty342kids · 04/10/2013 17:45

Thanks for ideas regarding Biscuitgate, especially yours TIP Grin

Tomorrow I'm throwing in a mini fast day as the others this week have been such epic disasters. I'll keep busy in the morning then will be at a swimming competition (helping poolside) in the afternoon so that will prevent me going near food! Then won't be back until 7.30ish for home made lamb mince / feta kebabs with a brown rice salad.

Happy weekend everyone!

wrigglebum · 04/10/2013 18:09

Definitely open the cellophane! I love the shred, I've got to level 3, day 9 today, so one more session and I'm done. It has made a real difference- I can see I'm getting more toned and I feel stronger. I haven't been doing it every day, but stuck to 3-4 times a week as that's a sustainable level (I didn't want to rush in too fast and then quit or get injured).

When I've finished I'll do some other Jillian DVDs and then come back and redo the shred at some point with heavier weights and all the advanced moves.

Talkinpeace · 04/10/2013 18:54

kinkydorito yes, it gets much easier because it becomes second nature. Eating on a Monday feels quite odd to me now. If I miss the second fast of the week I feel the need for restraint over the weekend ....

JB30 · 04/10/2013 19:13

Took me ages through all the posts, I love days like this here! Amazing results guys, too many to name check but wow. And all the nsv's and just general positivity and confidence coming through.
Down 1.2 today, 11.2.8 and in size 12 jeans easy Grin
16.4 pounds down in total since May. Happy happy bunny.
Have a great Friday Wink

KinkyDorito · 04/10/2013 19:21

Talkin thanks Smile. I've made it through on about 550kcals, which I don't think is too bad going. I'm going to aim for my next FD on Monday. Hopefully will be more settled.

spoon1 · 04/10/2013 19:30

Day one and counting- sounds too good to be true but I've seen so many people do this and look great. Fingers crossed !

Talkinpeace · 04/10/2013 19:41

spoon1
Well done.
The logic is scarily simple.
To lose 1.5 lb a week you need a calorie deficit of just over 3000 calories (look on the side of a pack of butter to put it into visual terms !)
Most systems make you reduce your calories every day to hit that deficit.
This one slaps the whole lot in two days and lets you catch your breath in between.
And if anybody tells you that you have to eat every three hours, remind them that actually that just have to digest every three hours and most women carry at least 10,000 calories across the back of their hips just waiting to be digested Grin

NotAsTired · 04/10/2013 20:05

JB30. Well done on your loss and sliding into size 12 jeans easily. Smile

Emmabryant123 · 04/10/2013 20:08

Eating and little and often is rubbish.
I don't believe anyone is that hungry to need to eat all the time.
I eat at 10:30am and 6:00pm because that's when I'm hungry. So I neither have breakfast or lunch as I get up at sixam. People look at me funny when I don't have lunch at lunch time. I tell them I'm not hungry they say neither am I, why eat then? 'Because you need lunch' ....they say

eatriskier · 04/10/2013 20:21

And don't forget the "breakfast is the most important meal of the day' nugget. I was, and am very rarely still, hungry when I first get up (around 6 am). I tend to eat brekkie at about 9, I used to do the commute before eating anything. People thought I was insane doing anything like that on an empty stomach.

Coveredinweetabix · 04/10/2013 20:31

I agree eat. I used to have breakfast every day thinking that it would set me up for the day and actually aid weight loss. Since I've been doing this, I've rarely had anything to eat before 10.00am unless I've done an FD and a lot of exercise the day before and I don't miss breakfast at all.

JB30 · 04/10/2013 20:51

Thank you NotAsTired, delighted with progressGrin Enjoying your nfd?
Talking about the eating by the clock and constant nibbling, I don't know how I ever thought I'd lose weight when I was never more than 2 hours between eating, obviously adds up and increase your desire for food.
Well I've had my takeaway (smallish portion cause that's all I needed) some wine, a little chocolate, pack of crisps and I'm done. Hitting tdee for the first time this week. Eyes on the prize, 1lb to lose by next Friday to hit my next goal. Might do a 16:8 tomorrow, just to mix it up

PoshPaula · 04/10/2013 20:59

Thanks southeastdweller you're not the first person who has suggested that I'm not eating enough (generally). Don't quite know how to play it. I will keep going.

Very interesting reading other people's experiences.

Talkinpeace · 04/10/2013 21:11

PoshPaula
people say I don't eat enough. But then say I look fab : without making the connection.
LOTS of great ideas / plans on the Tips and Hints thread

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 04/10/2013 21:28

Hi everyone.

After a bad start to the week, I didn't manage a FD. Oh well it's a new week in a couple of days and I have my food all planned for the week and my FDs Mon and Thurs. I have been fasting a little bit though. Currently having a 16 hour fast, not eating now till midday tomorrow.

southeastdweller · 04/10/2013 21:53

posh I think you should look at your T.D.E.E and don't go under by 10% on your NFD's, also from personal experience I can recommend having a splurge now and then to help keep your metabolism on it's toes.

JB Well done on your great result this week. By the way, I agree completely with what you said recently about the penny finally dropping. Liberating feels like too small a word to describe how I feel about this WOL Smile.

NotAsTired · 04/10/2013 22:12

JB30. For the first time in ages I actually tracked my calories on mfp. Even with chocolate and a little ice cream, I only managed just over 1200 calories. Grin

I used to eat little and often. It was okay when I diligently controlled my calories but not when I did not.

I still eat 3 square meals a day because I love my breakfast as much as I love my lunch and dinner but now I rarely snack. And because I don't snack, I rarely need to track my calories.

And now I am not starving for breakfast as soon as I wake up. I can eat it at whatever time I choose to have it.

zombiesheep · 04/10/2013 22:30

Hi again everyone. This has got to be coincidence surely, I only started on Sunday and have had only had 2 fast days, but I feel so much better in myself... I really wish I had weighed and measured myself but will do so this Sunday instead. I don't feel as bloated so I feel skinnier already and so much better/more energetic. I'm really hoping this is not a placebo effect or anything like that because if this carries on I will be so happy! :o
