Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 27 - Season of fasts and mellow rumblingness (with apologies to Keats)

BetsyBell · 19/09/2013 16:58

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

JB fantastic loss, well done!
Posh you could try mixing your calories up a bit more - my TDEE is just over 2000 cals but on Fridays I generally hit over that a little and my weekends - both days are far more (eg 2500, the odd 3000 cal day as we eat out alot at weekends). But then Monday through Thursday are < 500 cal FDs and < 2000 (eg typically 1700) cal NFDs. Even before 5:2, when I was just calorie counting I was mixing it up like this (lower calorie weekdays and higher calorie weekends). Aside from a lengthy stall late last year, I've been consistently losing month on month.

GatoradeMeBitch · 05/10/2013 00:10

I lurk on this one Betsy, to hoover up hints and tips Smile. Perhaps the two big threads could be merged at some point because they both seem to move quite slowly.

GatoradeMeBitch · 05/10/2013 00:11

Oh! I thought I was responding to one of the last few posts, clearly not!

Breadandwine · 05/10/2013 02:19

Once again it's lovely to see all the newcomers on the thread - and all doing well. Welcome one and all! Don't forget to check out all the fantastic links in the OP and the Links and Tips thread!

(But if anyone has hit a plateau, or isn't losing straight away - don't forget all the health benefits that fasting brings!)

And all those NSVs, fantastic!

zombie - it's not coincidence! Our bodies are built to fast - it's what we've done throughout history! And the more you do it, the more your body adjusts.

It's healthy to give your digestion a break a couple of times a week - and, as many have said, you begin to look forward to the FDs.

I know I do! Grin

KinkyDorito · 05/10/2013 06:51

Okay, I'm in love with the system. After first FD, lost 1lb and it stayed off - normally it would ping back up with normal eating. Just got on scales this morning after 2nd FD and 2lbs off!!!!! That's mega. Not convinced it will all stay gone today, but certainly heading in the right direction.

So, with 6 weeks of low carb, the last week of it following 5:2, I am 17.5lbs lighter and feeling so much better in myself. IBS has disappeared.

Am delighted and will keep telling myself that when my stomach rumbles in a noisy way in front of a class of 32 teenagers Grin.

BsshBossh · 05/10/2013 06:59

Kinky that's terrific :)

KinkyDorito · 05/10/2013 07:24

Thanks Bssh. I do have a bit to lose, but I really started all of this because I was sick of being ill. So far, so good. Smile

somewherebecomingrain · 05/10/2013 07:26

Great positivity here. Morning afte first nfd and weight is back down to 11.3 and I really think its going to stick this time (been bouncing between 11.3 and 11.7 which seems a LARGE gap).

I think exercise and salty food account fir a lot

MissStrawberry · 05/10/2013 08:32

Everyone is brilliant!

I recorded my new weight on MFP and got a shock.

July 2012 - 13 stone 2lbs. Started Diet Chef, lost a bit.
Aug 2013 - 12 stone 4lbs. Started 5:2, lost a lot Grin.
5.10.13 - 11 stone 5.4 lbs. Very happy Grin.

Best bit is I am no longer afraid of food. I am no longer afraid of being hungry. I am no longer ruled by food. I am no longer fighting the demons I have fought since I was young. I like it when I say you can have it tomorrow and the sky doesn't fall in.

It is all because of you lovely people who were so patient over and over again when I couldn't get it and didn't get exasperated with me.

Question for next weeks FD. Due to circumstances I can only fast on Monday and Tuesday and I have the feeling two consecutive ones aren't a good idea? Any ideas or is 6:1 for one week going to be okay?

lucyintheskywithdinos · 05/10/2013 08:50

Morning! No shift on the scales for me this week, but I was weighing after a pretty boozy night. Impressive that I didn't gain really!

I started 5:2 in June, weighing 13 stone 8.
Now I weigh 11 stone 7.

mummyof2girlsx · 05/10/2013 09:02

MissStrawberry 6:1 should be fine, and maybe a mini fast or 16:8?

I have been on 5:2 for a year now and currently maintaining and if I have weeks were I am unable to fit in more than one fast, I just mix the other days up with mini fasts or eat under tdee (and over tdee at the weekend Grin)

BsshBossh · 05/10/2013 09:14

somewhere that's good news.
MissS what an inspirational post - totally agree with what you said about not being afraid of hunger. Why not try 2 consecutive fasts? You might be fine, and if you fail on the second day then change that one into a mini fast.

BsshBossh · 05/10/2013 09:14

Terrific overall weight loss lucy.

somewherebecomingrain · 05/10/2013 09:16

missS SmileSmileSmile

emmabryant yes conventional mealtimes have a lot to answer for.

I'd naturally eat at 11 and 4/5 if left to my own devices. Used to snack at 4/5 when worked in an office 9-5 then of course you are expected to eat at 7 too.

marissab · 05/10/2013 09:19

Joining. I fell off the wagon last xmas Shock so starting up again today Grin

BetsyBell · 05/10/2013 10:10

That's a lovely post MissS :)

Smile misss

MelanieCheeks · 05/10/2013 11:03

2 consectuive days is only discouraged because it's very difficult. You coudl try it and see how you go. Or just have a 6:1 week. Could you manage a 24 hour fast later in the week?

MissStrawberry · 05/10/2013 11:32

I could do a mini fast tomorrow just having dinner and then a proper fast on Tuesday as I seem to have booked a pub lunch for Monday Grin.

MissStrawberry · 05/10/2013 11:37

Fasting on Wed, Thurs or Friday would be impossible but I could try Saturday. I normally weigh myself Saturday morning so allow myself treats that day but don't always have them Shock. I bought lovely M&S crisps but haven't had then yet as not hungry and know they are empty calories really and set off the munchies.

BetsyBell · 05/10/2013 11:43

Yes, my natural eating times are 10am and 4pm - this fits in brilliantly with my schedule but no one else's! Except on a Sunday Grin

I don't like going to bed with much in my stomach so earlier eating really suits me. Of course what actually happens is I often end up eating while cooking for everyone else and then sitting down to eat. It used to be that I'd still eat a full meal then (aka, how the weight piled on) but now I'm able to adjust my portion size accordingly. It's not ideal but it seems to be an ok compromise.

OP posts:
whimsicalname · 05/10/2013 12:20

misss you've done so well! Why don't you allow yourself a 6:1 week, see how you go, and maybe do. 4:3 the week after.

You too Lucy. Great work!

I had a bit of a fail on my fd yesterday and caved for my boys' soup and bread. I finished one boy's bowl and ended up having another one, but then didn't eat any more for the rest of the day. I probably went up to 650, but that's not the worst thing in the world.

Have a lovely weekend everyone and enjoy some more relaxed eating!

MissStrawberry · 05/10/2013 15:37

I am going to just see how I feel and not worry too much as it is a big week coming up and my food intake is irrelevant compared but I will be back on it from next weekend.

I found my BMI ideal but still need to know what I should actually weigh. Is that anywhere online?

marissab · 05/10/2013 16:11

This is my first fast day since i started 5:2 again. I am finding it sooo hard this time. I have 50 cals left today and i'm starving! I may have to do 600 cals today. Don't remember it being this hard Hmm does it get easier the longer you do it for?

JB30 · 05/10/2013 17:22

Defo gets easier Marissab, have another 100 if you need it, 200 even! Maybe look back at what you had and see if there was anything in there that made you hungrier or bad value cals (e.g bread) I reckon my winning menu is soup for lunch and then salmon with steamed veg, if I've anything left an orange - don't know why but craving them last while. I'd found myself avoiding fruit on fd's cause it made me hungry but at the end of day doesn't seem to bother me.
Very very busy day, 4 mile jog/walk shopping trip, Davina cardio session, hoovering, bed changing, child bathing, bathroom cleaning - then birthday party where I took my friends baby for an hour wander round the shops as he was going spare at it! I reckon it was another mile between the back/forth. Home now, did the ironing, did some dinner prep...oh my, I'm whacked! Doing a 16:8 as well which is going great. My loss yesterday really encouraged me. Bought a pair of m&s jeggings in a 12 this morning as my size 14's are too loose Grin Now this pair fit me where they hit me but I'm confident they'll be perfect in another week or 2. Tired but happy. Hood everyone else is having a great Saturday!
