The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Well done hitc eatriskier and bssh you're all doing great!

dotty you have this under control, you know you do really!

Good on you helles...with my new bras, DP is noticing I've lost weight from the wrong place Blush - down 2 cup sizes!

MissStrawberry · 04/10/2013 08:57

Thank you Alibabaa.

somewherebecomingrain - Kent has the rain! I still feel a bit like a newbie as I don't really understand the breaking the fast that people talk about even though I do know it means they have gone so many hours without food. I don't consciously call it that in my head, I just eat normally and then when it is the FD I don't eat until dinner. Maintaining is always good. Don't worry if you haven't lost this week, ime I find I do well the following week.

Dotty we all have days when we just want to eat. Don't beat yourself up but be mindful of why you ate all the biscuits and try and avoid a repeat performance. What works for me is saying I can have it tomorrow. Mostly I find I am not hungry enough to do so!

PoshPaula · 04/10/2013 08:59

So disappointed. After two days of fasting since Monday, no alcohol, very moderate eating on NFD's - I've actually lost no weight and even gained very slightly.

Has anyone else experienced this? Today being Friday I am damned well going to drink wine tonight so it's going to get even worse!

Dotty342kids · 04/10/2013 09:09

PoshPaula this is not like other ways of eating, the losses are often very gradual and so this doesn't surprise me. Just keep steady, keep going and you will lose, I promise!

Good idea about the "allowable" snacks in case I really need them. I don't like normal popcorn but there are some nice flavoured varieties around now so that's a good plan.
And no, I never normally stock biscuits in the house for precisely this reason - if they're there, I will eat them. My DH decided to buy loads for some reason, and then buggered off to Copenhagen, leaving me with them Shock
No more of that behaviour!

BsshBossh · 04/10/2013 09:18

PoshPaula I've had several periods of maintaining/stalling/gaining even when doing everything by the book. It's just a normal thing, I think. Just keep plugging away, week after week, and be patient. Also: measure yourself with a tape!

BsshBossh · 04/10/2013 09:19

Dotty husbands can be quite helpful can't they, not. Skinny popcorn and popchips are your friends (but only buy a pack at a time!).

lucyintheskywithdinos · 04/10/2013 09:32

Question - anyone else had constipation on 5:2? I feel bloated and yucky this morning. It always seems to be the day after a 24hr liquid fast.

I think the problem is that I am feeling full very quickly when I eat, so not eating anywhere near the volume of fruit and veg I was eating. Going to have a giant salad for lunch today and I'm making pizza for tea so I'll do a load of different salads to go with it. Hoping that will sort me out!

BsshBossh · 04/10/2013 09:36

lucy my motions are fine after FDs. I think it's because I always eat lentils on FDs - would that help you?

MrsFlorrick · 04/10/2013 09:53

Bssbossh. You're my weight twin! I've got 12 lbs to go to 21BMI. Grin

I'd say race you but I'm bound to lose. I lost lots the first month on this diet but hardly any this last month although I've had NSv probably due to doing Jillian michaels workouts.

I will try being stricter on myself.

I am happy to have got this far. Just want to be "there" now. I guess you feel like that too. Wink

WilsonFrickett · 04/10/2013 10:11

Lucy no, I'm quite the opposite, I 'go' like a trooper the day after. Are you drinking enough?

Off to a spa today, woo hoo! Have lost 3lbs and I swear my tummy is flatter. That's my story and I'm sticking to it, anyway.
If I get 5 mins I'm going to measure myself as well, I hadn't thought of doing that before I started.

Good luck to any Friday FDs Smile

BsshBossh · 04/10/2013 10:12

MrsFlorrick woohoo!

NotAsTired · 04/10/2013 10:15

Lots of losses and nsv. Well done hitc eatriskier bssh and helles. I hope I ave not missed anyone out.

I've lost another lb. That's 15 lbs in total for me. Smile. Another 4 lbs to get to

BsshBossh · 04/10/2013 10:16

MrsFlorrick to be honest I'm not in a rush. I was BMI 36 last year and hitting BMI 25 in May this year was such a wonderful feeling. I'm incredibly contented with my body right now that I don't care whether it takes weeks, months or years to reach BMI 21. Also, my focus has shifted to heavy weight lifting and re-shaping my body so I'm not expecting the lbs to fall off anymore.

BsshBossh · 04/10/2013 10:16

NotAsTired fantastic!

eatriskier · 04/10/2013 11:02

Lucy I have intermittent issues with going. normally its when I need to hit the strong painkillers. but sometimes just randomly. normally resolved by some senna.

eatriskier · 04/10/2013 11:02

well done all the fellow losers Thanks

MrsFlorrick · 04/10/2013 11:30

Bsss. Wow. That's impressive weightloss indeed! Congratulations. You're amazing.

My BMI was about 29 after the two DC. Up from between 20.5 and 21. Much less impressive that yours in terms of weightloss and my youngest just turned two so a long time getting here too. (Had a 4 month blip of eating frenzy last autumn which set me back a lot).

What exercises are you doing?

I used to just swim but I discovered Jillian Michaels this spring. It has made such a massive difference.

I recommend her shred. So doable when you're busy and/or have small DC.

I'm doing 6 week 6 pack now. I am on my final week now. My second go as I did it in May/June as well.

No six pack yet but it has firmed up my whole body amazingly. My tummy is a car crash from pregnancies and CSs. But the rest of me actually looks good (well at least ok for a 40yo Wink)

Well done though.

MissStrawberry · 04/10/2013 11:42

I have no idea what my BMI is but I do know percentage of water and far in my body. Are they the same? .

wrigglebum · 04/10/2013 12:05

MissS- just google BMI calculator and pop your details in to find your bmi. It's not the be all and end all but a useful guide. It tends not to be accurate for especially sporty types with a lot of muscle but is good guidance for the rest of us.

Eatriskier- glad you're enjoying the hooping! I like mine too, I have to say I've found keeping it up rather easy, so I'm focussing on trying to spin it the other way, plus doing different movements with it. I like spinning around with it but have to be careful not to knock the tv Grin. It is helping keep my waist trim I think.

Not managed a fast this week due to minimal sleep so just trying to not go crazy. Keeping an eye on my weight but I think a week off after reaching target is justified! I'm just going to keep a careful watch on my weight to make sure it doesn't creep up, I don't ever want to get bigger again.

Talkinpeace · 04/10/2013 12:24

There is a BMI calculator linked in the opening post.
Dotty save at least one of the packs of biscuits to bash him over the head with upon his reurn ....

Booze on fast days : the simple reason for not doing it is that its really good to give your liver a break a couple of days a week. I try to not drink 4 days a week just for the health reasons.

Another kg down this week .... heading towards my new target for Christmas. Two extra bodypump classes have definitely contributed.

Well done to all the fasters new and experienced. And yes, everybody reacts differently so weight loss will be erratic, and bowels can be too.

I'm reading up on the differences in skeleton shape and how it impacts on frame shape .... will do a thread when I've pulled the info together.

MissStrawberry · 04/10/2013 12:24

Thank you wrigglebum.

I started on 27.7 and am now 25.6. Still overweight but at least it is coming down. I didn't put in my heaviest weight.

whimsicalname · 04/10/2013 13:16

Well done on good losses bssh, mrsflorrick, helles and notastired. An inspiration to us all!

Are you enjoying 6 week 6 pack Mrsflorrick? I did the shred earlier this year, and now have Ripped in 30 which I quite like. It's basically more of the same, only Jillian wears more makeup and flicks her hair a lot.

Ooh, and I see talkinpeace you do body pump. I started doing that over the summer. I love it!

There was a Guardian magazine on 5:2ing your whole life a few months back which was quite entertaining. So I 5:2 drinking - at the moment I'm trying to loose weight, so only drink 2 days a week. When I'm off the wagon, I'll not drink 2 days a week. Same with exercise (although I always try to do 5 days, even if just walking).

FD here for me. I'm taking myself off to a new Walmart that's just opened. They sell guns you know. Crazy.

whimsicalname · 04/10/2013 13:18

Oh, just remembered what I came on for...

Can someone talk me through doing 18:6? my husband's away all next week and I don't think the kids will survive me doing proper fasting.

how many calories do you have over the day, and how many days a week do you do it.

Thanks.

BsshBossh · 04/10/2013 13:21

MrsFlorrick I go to a gym and do 2-3 sessions of cardio (incline powerwalking on a treadmill) and 2 sessions of free weights (squats, deadlifts, lunges). Just 30 mins each session but I generally walk (fast) 1 hour every day too. Mind you, I still manage to lose without the exercise too so I don't rely on it to lose weight.

Talkinpeace · 04/10/2013 13:30

whimsical
16:8 is basically skipping breakfast.
You do all your eating within an 8 hour window - so no snacking Grin

so in your case, just have tea or coffee for breakfast while busying about, have a very light lunch - or even skip it one or two days and then have nice suppers with the kids ... that will keep you well inside your TDEE but enjoying meal times.
When DH is away I sometimes take the kids out and for my supper have two starters instead of a starter and main ...
also save all booze calories till he returns and then have bubbly - cos you're both worth it Wink
