Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 27 - Season of fasts and mellow rumblingness (with apologies to Keats)

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Well done MissStrawberry. That's great. How long has it taken you? I might need to have a bourbon now after reading your post.

Diet coke helped me today at work so might be a good addition to the first FD at work survival kit Smile

Neeko · 03/10/2013 20:01

Of course I mean a bourbon tomorrow...

PoshPaula · 03/10/2013 20:04

notastired the Yorkshire Provender Chicken and Veg soup was fantastic. Really nice and quite satisfying. Feeling pleased with myself! Keep it up ladies!

angelabbie · 03/10/2013 20:12

Hi MISS Strawberry, am a little better thanks but still sick and dizzy, must be better tomorrow so much to bloomin do with two days off.

x

JB30 · 03/10/2013 20:16

FD complete, grand total 497! Busy busy all day which is a great help. I'm hoping to see a wee drop in the scales tomorrow. I have a meeting with a friend I haven't seen in 1.5 years next weekend. If I get down to 11.2 by then (last weeks WI was 11.4) I'll be a nearly a stone lighter than when I last saw her AND the lightest I've been in, wait for it, 15 years!!! I remember going to a gym at that time and nearly passing out at being 11.2, little did I know I'd end up at 13.7 non pregnant and between 15-16 stone during my pregnancies! God, I can't believe I was 16+ stone on my first, she wasn't even 8lb born. I thought I was gorgeous, then saw a pic after she was born, I was like a ship.
Hmm, what to eat tomorrowGrin Any suggestion for something delicious for dinner?

JB30 · 03/10/2013 20:17

Delighted for you MissS!!! Go you, lucky 13 eh Wink

BsshBossh · 03/10/2013 20:56

Fast broken. Around 280 cals for the day and not hungry for more.

MissStrawberry · 03/10/2013 21:00

Neeko - I started on August 3rd so nearly 9 weeks.

angelabbie keep on eye on how you feel. I banged my head twice in a week and knocked my neck out really badly. I walked around like it for months before having trouble moving my legs and finally getting sorted.

Thanks JB30. Feels good, I must admit.

I think I am doing lasagne for dinner. DS2 has been asking for it for weeks and I have a friend coming over so I can prepare it all in the morning and then just stick it in the oven once home from school.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 03/10/2013 21:18

Well done fasters!

My soup was delicious. I stirred in a big handful of the green veg I had cooked for the DCs which made it extra yummy and I still feel full now 3.5 hours later.

4 NFDs ahead of me now - woohoo!

Good luck to everyone fasting tomorrow :)

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 03/10/2013 21:20

MissS that is great weightloss, well done!

somewherebecomingrain · 03/10/2013 21:21

Fast day over.

I had broad beans, tomato, spring onions and a tiny bit of pecorino with three eggs - about 500 cals.

I also had three or four milky coffees cause it was hard today.

I also licked the bowl and spoon of the cake I made for my sister.

I also ate a few crumbs of my sons cheesy potato.

I also glugged some oj.

I think you get my gist! Not my greatest fast day ever but not a total failure.

bsssh you are a bit of a natural,, not feeling hungry!

missS I remember when you were a newbie - you've now zoomed past my weight loss which totals 11lb at most.

Really hope the scales will go down soon, but not holding my breath. Pleased with where I'm at right now, and that its not going up at all.

Anyway, glad it's over,

headintheclouds · 03/10/2013 23:33

FD for me too. It was a particularly tough day for me today..a shitty day at work .I coped without food all day which is normal for me on a FD ... BUT ate under 500 cals this evening and had to have 3 very small glasses of therapeutic Wine. that little lot took me to 695 cals..

Weekly WI tomorrow ..oh dear

HoleyCow · 04/10/2013 05:37

Morning - can one of you lovelies please explain to me why I shouldn't drink alcohol on a FD, albeit it G & Slimline tonic at 44cals. Blush

eatriskier · 04/10/2013 06:41

good morning all

holey your body will process the poison that is alcohol before it starts processing any fat loss/weight issues. So you sort of slow your progress down. However there have been fast days for me that have been so horrific in a non food way I have hit the booze so I'm not one to talk.

Still feeling rotten here. In fact even worse again this am. that. Thankfully not coughing but my throat is so unbelievably sore and now I have a temperature, and running hot and cold and ache everywhere. Sad

Have lost another 1lb though with my mini fast so I do feel a bit better for that, and I managed a little trip to bravissimo so my poor breasts are now looking wonderful and where they should be! I am instantly slimmer! Also DH took one look at me yesterday and said he can see the difference to my stomach since I started hula hooping. Its looking the flatest its probably ever been since I was an adult. Grin

Trying to focus on the positives though instead of worrying about looking after my kids when feeling like this. Why don't mum's get sick leave? Confused

Hope you're all feeling better than me and good luck to today's fasters

Dotty342kids · 04/10/2013 06:54

eatriskier, well done on the flat tummy. My weighted hula hoop arrived on Tuesday and it's......... interesting! I've never been able to hula hoop but tried a hooping class, with weighted hoops, back in April and found it really easy.
So bought a hoop and it's really hard Sad. They were clearly magic hoops in the gym Grin. Anyway, practice makes perfect so once the current bruising on my hips goes, I shall be back to it!
Another biscuit based binge end to yesterday's fast day. So annoyed with myself! DH is away in Copenhagen this week so it's just me and the DCs which I don't think is helping. Must. Get. Back. On. Track.
Someone give me a pep talk please tip, hitc itsaboat, BssBossh etc!

eatriskier · 04/10/2013 06:59

dotty I was horrible bruised for quite a while. 7 sessions in and I can now hula for a full 10 mins without dropping it. It was like it just kicked in one day, and then I had to build up the stamina to go longer than a minute at a time! You don't need the biscuits. You don't need the biscuits. You don't need the biscuits.

headintheclouds · 04/10/2013 07:08

Thrilled with today's WI - after 5 weeks of bouncing up and down the same 3 lbs .... I've LOST 2 lbs .Am now 9 st 12 lbs! Woo hoo!
Started 28 Jan at 11 st 2
bust 40. ( now 38)
Waist 38 ( 31)
Hips 40 (38)

dotty It's easy to have a couple of blips- but NOW it's time to get serious... Give yourself a kick up the Jacksy. Enjoy your weekend without DH and start with renewed enthusiasm on Monday!Youve done brilliantly so far - don't undo all your hard work... You CAN do it.
pep Talk over

BsshBossh · 04/10/2013 07:14

Weigh-in Friday and 2.2 lbs down this week :)
So that's a grand total of 73 lbs lost since February 2012 (27 lbs of those lost since Feb 2013 starting 5:2)
12 lbs to go to hit BMI 21.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 04/10/2013 07:22

Great news head!

Dotty - I'm very much one for the evening munchies so I know how you feel. The way I deal with it on a FD is to say to myself - why go through the pain of fasting only to sabotage and reap no benefit? The biscuits/chocolate/toast or whatever will be there in the morning and can be breakfast if I want them that badly.

Can you find some distraction techniques? What do you do in the evenings when your DH is away? Can you have an early night so that the biscuits are out of immediate reach?

Dotty342kids · 04/10/2013 07:28

Aw, thanks everybody!
hitc amazing result, well done! Right, that's inspired me Smile and your waist measurements too, just wow - you must have needed to buy a heap of new trousers / jeans!

BssBossh you never cease to amaze me when you write it all down like that, really is an incredible loss.

alibaba, thank you! Trouble is that I tend to catch up with all my favourite tv programmes whilst DH is away so that means sitting on sofa. Might try home pedicure as I can't get to the kitchen whilst my feet are in a bucket of hot water Grin

And eatrisker glad to hear it gets easier. Going to try to fit another quick go in at some point today.

BsshBossh · 04/10/2013 07:29

Great losses eatriskier and headintheclouds :) Go us!
Dotty can you stop stocking biscuits in the house for a while or is that impossible with the kids (or can you get someone to hide them on FDs). Biscuits are my downfall too but as DD only eats them on weekends I don't need to stick them.

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 04/10/2013 07:38

Well done everyone - I've been lurking the past couple of days and there have been some fantastic nsv's and sv's :)

Eat find some exercises that specifically target the pectorals and that should help perk you back up.

My NSV - with my new bra, people are noticing I've lost weight :)

Twinmama32 · 04/10/2013 07:42

Don't worry Dotty we all do it but just start again and you'll crack it!
In terms of the fd munches, from which i sometimes suffer, yesterday I had a 6 cal jelly, options hot choc 40cals & small bag of popcorn from tescos at 60 cals lined up so I could only eat those if I absolutely had to, the whole lot came to 106cals so not a deal breaker. If u give yourself the choice of limited food maybe you'll feel less like reaching for the other naughty snacks?!
You can do it, don't beat yourself up about it though it a not a diet or a punishment! Smile

Twinmama32 · 04/10/2013 07:43

Oh yeah and re biscuits, I now only stock rich tea in the house as they're not particularly alluring to me. If they were chocolate hobnobs.....

BsshBossh · 04/10/2013 07:47

Great idea Twinmama - skinny popcorn comes in all sorts of delicious flavours and are very moreish. Keep a pack in on FDs Dotty.
