Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

I need to make a low cal meal that is very quick/easy as I don't get in from work until late and there's the kids to see to. Maybe I'll go for chicken and veg - but will that be low cal enough?!

I'm looking to lose pounds rather than stones but I do tend to 'plateau' and so that's what I'm hoping won't happen on this programme. Does anyone else find this to be a problem?

Dotty342kids · 03/10/2013 13:08

angel that sounds like a fab salad. Yum (though personally I'd still want something hot)

PoshPaula even a ready made soup can easily come in under the required cals so if it's quick you require, that can work too!

PoshPaula · 03/10/2013 13:26

Thanks Dotty that's a good idea. Might nip into Tesco on the way home. I don't suppose you can recommend any specific soups....

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 03/10/2013 13:38

Paula I'm having New Covent Garden hearty chicken and vegetable for my tea. The whole box/packet is 250 calories. There were loads of others that would have come in around the same.

Chicken and veg would definitely be low calorie enough. DH and my standby for fast days is chicken breast marinated in herbs and lemon with a very few new potatoes and a big pile of broccoli/courgettes/leeks or whatever. Usually comes in at about 400 calories and is a really lovely meal.

We don't have lunch on FDs though which gives us more flexibility with our evening meals.

Talkinpeace · 03/10/2013 13:45

the tubs of fresh soup - so long as its not a cream one - are often low calorie.
I've got a Waitrose chicken chilli one for tonight - 325 calories in a 500 ml pot !

Sophiste · 03/10/2013 13:55

angelabbie sorry to hear you're having a bad week. Have you been checked for concussion after what happened on Tuesday?

Dotty342kids · 03/10/2013 14:01

there you go, I knew someone else would come along and recommend soups! I don't buy them as tend to make my own but I know lots of 5:2'ers swear by the fresh soups if pushed for time.
Smile

NotAsTired · 03/10/2013 14:02

I really like Yorkshire Provender soups at the moment, particularly their <a class="break-all" href="//Twww.yorkshireprovender.co.uk/soups/summer-soups/tomato-and-red-pepper-soup-with-wensleydale-cheese-and-fresh-basil/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Tomato and Red Pepper with Wensleydale and Basil, which is 306 calories for 600ml pot, although I just have half a pot, and then eat my main meal. It feels substantial. Waitrose have them in.

Yum. Making myself hungry now. Grin

NotAsTired · 03/10/2013 14:04

Dotty I wish I could make my own soups, but the few times I've tried it, it always comes out a bit meh.

Orangeychoc · 03/10/2013 15:49

Afternoon all

I just broke my fast with a sainsburys "my goodness" pea and ham hock soup. It was genuinely delicious - thick, filling and only 259 calories. That's all I've had today :-)

BsshBossh · 03/10/2013 17:38

Hello fellow fasters. I'm still going strong. Only water and two mugs of black coffee so far. Hoping to break my fast at dinner around 9pm with a dal (or dahl?) making it a true 24 hour fast!

PoshPaula · 03/10/2013 17:52

Okay I have bought a Yorkshire Provender soup, Chicken and VEGETABLE I think it is. Am looking forward. Still going strong today. It should total about 360 calories, which means that plus my grapefruit and banana, tea, Bovril... I should be keeping to the guidelines?

zombiesheep · 03/10/2013 18:04

NFD here, been a bit unhealthy. Not sure I'm gonna lose much weight if I eat like this but on FD I have been so good!

Really want to go on a walk but no one will come with me, I don't even have a dog :(

BsshBossh · 03/10/2013 18:14

Going out for an Indian lunch tomorrow - thali, pooris, can't wait (NFD tomorrow obviously). This is keeping me going today!

Coveredinweetabix · 03/10/2013 18:16

posh the innocent veg pots are delicious and feel a bit more substantial than soup. The innocent ones are £££ but most s'markets now do their own version.

lucyintheskywithdinos · 03/10/2013 18:31

FD went well here, even though DP and DDs wanted to go out for lunch. I sat and had a very virtuous americano.

Stew and roasted cauliflower for tea. I'm a bit obsessed with roasted cauli.

I have bought myself some running shoes. Going to start couch to 5k when they arrive!

eatriskier · 03/10/2013 18:33

FD gone ok due to fear of swallowing! Though its not going to end well as I am going to go over with the only things I can bare the thought of eating. Think I'm better off eating something than nothing tonight and if I go over then so be it.

Hope everyone else's FDs are going well.

Emmabryant123 · 03/10/2013 18:37

Hi guys.
Well I've worked out I'm hungry twice a day for food.
About 10:30 am and 6:00pm.
Just have no willpower to fast ATM though.
Yesterday had 10:30am cheese and tomato sandwich, banana
Dinner 6:30pm: jacket pot and chilli con Carne
Todsy: 10:30am two cheese and coleslaw rolls. Banana
Dinner 6:00pm chicken stir fry,
Might buy a big tub of soup tomorrow and try and stick to 500-600 need a fast.

Preciousdaisybear · 03/10/2013 18:41

Second FD this week has been more of a struggle - not with the eating but with a blinding headache. I was recommended black coffee and it seems to have done the trick. Just off to have tea. Tummy is rumbling!

PoshPaula · 03/10/2013 18:49

Innocent veg pots, brilliant idea. Will get a couple in. Thanks Weetabix.

Neeko · 03/10/2013 18:52

Hi. Have managed well food wise today. Quite impressed with myself.
Well done to the rest of the fasters.

NotAsTired · 03/10/2013 19:01

bssh yum at Indian thali. I used to love pooris but I find it too greasy now.

Well, I was going to have salmon stir fry with rice. Went to get the rice out of the cupboard, about 30 grains left. Sad. So just a str fry on its own. Oh well, it was probably for the best as I always forget how calorie dense salmon is. Good news is that I didn't serve all of my portion, was still full and I have some left for tomorrow's lunch with rice. Smile

NotAsTired · 03/10/2013 19:07

PoshP hope you enjoyed your soup. Smile.

Well done Neeko.

EmmaB. I can't work out when your fast day was, yesterday, today or tomorrow? If it was NFD yesterday and today, i don't think you are eating enough. If you are unable to do a fd, then take a break from it and start afresh next week.

KinkyDorito · 03/10/2013 19:15

Am mentally preparing for first ever FD at work. First FD went well with 1lb off the next morning, and still off now. Am amazed it didn't ping striaght back on. So, tomorrow I will be taking water and miso and aiming not to eat until the evening.

I might need strategies to cover up the rumbles...

Wish me luck.

MissStrawberry · 03/10/2013 19:33

Ouch AngelAbbie Flowers. Are you okay now?

Today was a normal eating day.
Breakfast - 1 piece of toast.
Snack - 2 bourbon biscuits. Eaten slowly and enjoyed as has been years since I had any Grin.
Lunch - omelette with spinach, mushrooms, tomato, cheese and salami.
Dinner - Home made veg burger (chick peas, carrots, onion, mushrooms) and some chips.

Did not eat the chocolate in my car because I wasn't hungry. Yay!

Someone said I had lost weight today so I added it up and it is 13lbs Shock.
