Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Well I made cakes and only licked my fingers a few times :/

But got up at 6am and did day 1 of couch to 5k.

somewherebecomingrain · 03/10/2013 06:56

Hello FD here.

Still on my plateau - 11.6 maybe this am. That would mean 1lb in about 6 weeks.

NSVs much more encouraging.

eatriskier · 03/10/2013 06:56

morning all.

wow twin. that's a great tmv (tape measure victory Wink )

I feel even worse this morning than I did yesterday. I think I'm still going go attempt fasting but only because Im crying at the thought of swallowing anything. even lemsip or a lemon-cayenne concoction - both of which I know will help immensely.

nsnv (non scale not victory) here. my boobs are going. I'm slightly depressed by this. I've had large boobs as long as I can remember having boobs. it may be less depressing if they were still perky but 2 kids and years of dodgy fitting have meant they have no real consistency either. not sure how to mourn this loss. Sad

somewherebecomingrain · 03/10/2013 06:56

Ps schrodinger well done on making cake.

eatriskier · 03/10/2013 07:01

wow on the cake making shrod

nsvs are definitely sweeter somewhere

BsshBossh · 03/10/2013 07:35

NotAsTired just fresh coriander in the dal, sometimes carrots finely chopped.

Neeko · 03/10/2013 07:35

Morning All.
FD here but have had a really stressful and tiring week and feel a bit wiped out this morning so I'll just see how I do. I've had a milky coffee and a big glass of water so far and have packed spicy tomato and lentil soup for lunch.
All going well ill have an omelette for tea and an early night. Not going to beat myself up if I come in over though as some days are just like that.
Very impressed by the nsv on here. Sorry not posting names as I'm on my phone, can't scroll back and don't remember them. Blush
Scales are showing another pound loss for me today but it won't count until Monday and I've pigged out eaten normally on the weekend.
Liked the idea from that interview that you weigh yourself every day and fast if you've gained. I am addicted weigh myself every morning and that kind of plan appeals to me once I've lost another 7lbs of so. Sounds like a plan for life to me! Grin
Have a good day all whether fasting or not.

BsshBossh · 03/10/2013 07:39

Twinmama32 fantastic inch loss!

Twinmama32 · 03/10/2013 07:48

Tmv, excellent! Thanks everyone Thanks

Not too worried about the plateau this time round (last one lasted 8 weeks) because clearly something is happening! All these inches and 2.5 stone has been lost through fasting alone,I've yet to embark on a exercise regime. God I love 5:2....

Best of luck to the fasters today, I'm joining you too, esp as I also seem to have that painful swollen throat, so ill also be mainlining cold & flu remedies like you eat, hope you get better quickly.

MelanieCheeks · 03/10/2013 07:58

Yesterdays snack-on-the-go fast day worked really well - I was a bit worried about how I'd copewith an hour's running training (in teh rain...) followed by 2 hours of Scottish dancing on only a boiled egg and a cupasoup, but it was fine. I slept like an angel too, didnt stir all night.

And today is my day off, and I can eat what I like!

lucyintheskywithdinos · 03/10/2013 08:08

twin amazing! You must be so pleased with yourself.

FD here too and I have put a before and current picture of myself up. The difference in my face! Used deliberately unflattering photos both times so I'll take them down in a bit.

postmanpatscat · 03/10/2013 08:22

Well done twin and shrod on your achievements!

And melanie that's more than many could take on when not fasting!

At the GP yesterday re my prolonged period (day 18 and counting!) and thyroid problems were suggested as a possibility. That might explain the hair falling out and I'm always cold, even when not fasting, plus my pulse rate is slower than normal range, but would not make sense re likely weight gain as I've lost almost 2st since Feb! Feeling a definite loss of brain power at the mo too, I get home from work and it's like I've already used up all my intelligence for the day Grin Blood test next Weds and ultrasound at some point too.

Good luck to all today's fasters.

Coveredinweetabix · 03/10/2013 08:23

twin as a fellow plateau-er, I can share your frustration. That's amazing inch loss tho. I'm sure one of the risk signs for diabetes is a waist circumference of X (can't remember the number) so your risk of diabetes must now be hugely reduced.
eat I can sympathise on the disappearing borage. Whilst it was nice when I got measured the other day to have gone down a back size, it was disappointing to go down two cup sizes!

SV here as am finally into the 10st category at 10st13. I know it won't really count until I weigh that after two or three consecutive NFDs but it's a start.

JB30 · 03/10/2013 08:29

FD off to a good start with 40 mins of Davina, cardio box & weights. 2 cups of strong coffee and a very busy day ahead. With luck, that'll keep me on the straight and narrow!
Have a good fast day Bssh, NotAs and anyone else fasting today

Dotty342kids · 03/10/2013 10:45

Gawd I don't know what's wrong with me this week. I cannot even begin to list all the naughtiness that has passed my lips, it is truly dreadful Sad, mindless "eat the contents of the cupboards" type binging.
Today is a fast day so am going to rein it right it right back in and am also thinking of doing a third fast on Sat to atone for my sins Grin. So, butternut squash soup for dinner today which is currently smelling divine.
Sat might just be a mini fast actually as DH home from work trip away Sat teatime and I'll have spent the afternoon helping at DD's swim club competition so no chance to cook therefore dinner may be a nice little takeaway of some sort!

PoshPaula · 03/10/2013 10:48

Hi everyone, I am fasting today (started last week) so have eaten a grapefruit and drank one tea, one coffee. Have brought a banana and Bovril for lunch. Tonight - a salad I guess. I so want to see a difference on those scales.....

MissStrawberry · 03/10/2013 10:58

Morning all.

Weighed today as I fasted yesterday and wanted a boots. 2.4 lb off since Saturday so happy with that and don't feel pressured to do a third fast tomorrow to make up for not doing two perfect 500 ones before. I will decide in the morning.

Planning on making TIP's omelette with spinach, mushrooms and cheese. Only made an omelette once or twice before so wish me luck.

Sophiste · 03/10/2013 11:06

Congratulations to everyone on all the sv, nsv and impressive exercise regimes. I had a physio appt yesterday (aftermath of herniated disc) and there was a slightly embarrassing pause when he asked me how much cardio I usually do in a week. (Does lifting my overstuffed handbag count?).

postmanpatscat it sounds as though you've had my TOTM (now 12 days late) tagged onto the end of yours. If so, sorry about that Blush.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 03/10/2013 12:05

Hi all - some very inspiring NSVs here! I have one of my own to share - I need to make a new hole in my belt Grin

FD today and going well so far.

Dinner is going to be soup and a roll because I need to eat quickly and then go out to a curriculum evening at school.

I have just done the weekly shop online to be delivered tomorrow - I am salivating!

mehefin · 03/10/2013 12:15

Dropped the car off for a service this morning, there is a lovely 5 mile walk back along a cycle path. Pre 5:2 this walk would have ended with a reward of toast or cakes but today I am back having a mug of hot water and I'll be fine 'til I have some lunch at 1pm and that's after only eating a bowl of berries with yoghurt and seeds in the last 24 hours.

How times have changed and I got back just before it started to rain.

So good to hear how everyone is getting on

Dotty342kids · 03/10/2013 12:35

PoshPaula, don't do salads in this weather! I can think of nothing more guaranteed to make you feel as though you're on a "diet" Smile
Lots of us go for fish or chicken with lots of veg, or something stew like / curryish eg a lentil dahl or veg curry. Or a nice home made soup.
Anything warm and hearty feeling in this weather!

Alibaba that's a great feeling huh? I've moved down three holes in my belt since doing 5:2, love it!

MissStrawberry · 03/10/2013 12:36

Just had my omelette. It looked a mess but tasted okay.

Talkinpeace · 03/10/2013 12:45

MissStrawberry they always do the first few times! there are some great videos online with tricks of how to make them work :-)

poshpaula
if you do a salad, make it a hot salad : lettuce, tomatoes, fresh boiled green beans, boiled egg quartered, tuna and olives
or do chicken and REALLY spicy salami so that the whole thing is warm and feels like a real meal

angelabbie · 03/10/2013 12:53

HI folks so many doing so well. I had a great fast day on Monday and then on tuesday managed to split my head open with a 1inch gash, ate nothing all day as felt so rotten, managed to faint as well which was interesting. But hubby went out and came back with ice cream and milk tray for the lady who loves. I still think I may have been under TDEE but today my fast day is just not going to happen. Keep feeling very sick so will stick to toast.
I have such a busy weekend work wise as a children's party entertainer that I must get better for Saturday.

x

angelabbie · 03/10/2013 12:55

oh and my salad of the moment is cott cheese, figs and fetta cheese on a bed of what you fancy. Its lovely and not like a diet meal at all.
