Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Well done ali what a great start!

Lots of teachers/school staff on here - me too! (Y1 and SENCo)

MissS hope your day gets better.

I probably won't fast this week, DD1 pointed out that if I lift my shoulder, she could eat a bowl of cereal using the hollow it creates by my collarbone! Blush Also I feel a bit bleugh as my period started 15 days ago and hasn't stopped since so I'm seeing the doctor tonight.

Talkinpeace · 02/10/2013 14:44

Aim for an average of 2000 on your non fasting days
so a bit under during the week to allow a bit over at the weekend
and then the two 500 cal fasts make all of your shortfall ...

BsshBossh · 02/10/2013 16:21

Oh God, these past two NFD have been a bit of a food fest. I'm craving food. Not junk mind you - good, wholesome homemade stuff full of wholegrains, full fat proteins and veggies, just bowlfuls of the stuff. I don't feel bloated or stuffed just conscious that there's alot of food passing my lips. Perhaps it's what my body needs .

Anyway, will try and make tomorrow's FD < 500 cals.

MissStrawberry · 02/10/2013 16:43

I am fighting emotional sadness worries today but determined not to give in. Not long and I can have fish pie. Tomorrow I can eat and I know what I am having too.

BsshBossh · 02/10/2013 16:48

Thanks to you MissS.

Talkinpeace · 02/10/2013 18:14

Mexican for supper tonight.
Have bought tomorrow's soup !

mehefin · 02/10/2013 18:21

I read an interview with Sheila Hancock recently. Couldn't believe she is 80, she said that she weighs herself every week and if she has gained anything she fasts - simple as that !

Preciousdaisybear · 02/10/2013 19:03

NFD for me and a protein feast (6 rashers of bacon for lunch). So unhealthy but oh so fine. Helped me cope with a teenager who had had 3 giant cans of an energy drink for his lunch. Grin FD tomorrow and parents' evening. Bring it on.

WilsonFrickett · 02/10/2013 19:25

ooooh struggling. DH is going to be late, DS swimming lesson was a stress fest, normal reaction would be to pour a giant wine right now, but I won't, I won't.

However it would really help if one of you fine ladies could pop over and de-vein the prawns for tonight's dinner? Hate de-veining prawns. Thanks awfully Wink Grin

zombiesheep · 02/10/2013 19:28

Such a good FD day for me today! Didn't eat a thing till 7pm then had a 425cal meal with a few handfuls of salad, was huge and yummy and healthy! Then a couple of spoonfuls of onken yoghurt (fat free). All in all very happy! Also thanks for advice on the calories, will stick to 2000 cals. "Saving for the weekend" won't work well for me as I plan to fast every Sunday! :o

lucyintheskywithdinos · 02/10/2013 19:29

Ex-counsellor specialising in teenagers here.

Yep, food was an issue with the odd inlaws today so I just didn't bother with lunch. Had a lovely lentil curry and brown rice for tea and crumble and soy cream for dessert. It was looooovely.

Fasting now until 7pm tomorrow. It's forest school tomorrow, so good and busy with that all day. Apple harvesting!

BsshBossh · 02/10/2013 19:35

Have decided to MFP my NFDs for a while to keep a check on any over-eating. Glad I logged today - including tonight's dinner later I have just 81 cals left - enough for a low cal hot choc. If I hadn't logged I'd have reached for ice cream. It's good to log calories once in a while to ensure I stay on track.

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 02/10/2013 19:47

Been having another pig day today second day in a row I decided to take some cake into work as everyone has been stressed and feeling the pressure due to being a man down on our team (this also helped with making me feel rubbish at the start of the week). Then the Director came in with nicer looking cakes and I was left feeling a bit unwanted.

Tomorrow is back on track to a NFD (500 cals at work, 1000 for tea and 200 for evening treat hot choc), then FD on Friday (200 cals at work, 250 cals tea and options hot choc for a treat) I am determined to do these last 2 days of the week.

JB30 · 02/10/2013 20:59

I fell into a tub of chocs today at a meeting, oh my, carnage. Anyway, so what, no biggie, I'll be better behaved next time and its an FD tomorrow. Toying with the idea of making my lunch now but am too fat to roll off couch - oh yeah when I got home I had some more junk. Oouff, looking forward to some hunger!
Anyone else fasting tomorrow?

SchrodingersFanny · 02/10/2013 21:10

I'm meeting a friend for picnic ting with kids tomorrow. I want to take some cakes, but thinking it would be madness to make some now at the end of a FD?

JB30 · 02/10/2013 21:35

Depends on how strong you feel schrod? Have you form (as in have you prev done badly in face of temptationGrin)
I can be oddly saintly on fd's, do food shopping, cook for all - sometimes, not always. I think I'm a bit of a food criminal, bit like a choc/crisp kleptomaniacConfused

NotAsTired · 02/10/2013 21:47

JB30 I'm fasting tomorrow. Smile

NFD here today. Went ok but my tummy is doing somersaults after eating spaghetti. Had given up eating pasta and now I remember why. Sad

JB30 · 02/10/2013 21:54

Have you planned the day NotAsTired?
I've got as far as small bowl of soup for lunch - not to starve myself but that's all I have lol! Salmon Darne with green steamed veg, orange for pud. Coming in at around 400, hmm should I pad that out or aim to stick to that considering I ate well over 2000 cals today

Orangeychoc · 02/10/2013 22:16

Well done to all fasters today. I found my first NFD a little weird - I wasn't starving this morning but did have an odd sicky-tummy pain moment this afternoon which I knew would only be resolved by food. Slightly over my TDDE so need to reign it in a bit next time.

2nd fast day tomorow and its also running club night, so will be interesting to see how that goes. Planning to eat cica 300 cal before I go & save 200 for a snack afterwards, although i am sometimes not hungry afterwards so may be able to go straight to bed, we shall see.

BsshBossh · 02/10/2013 22:18

I'm fasting tomorrow JB. Just a bowl of dal planned for dinner (no rice this time) as I want to get < 500 for a change.

NotAsTired · 02/10/2013 22:30

Jb30. Yes, sort of planned. I am having some soup around 4 ish and then also some sort of spicy salmon with a little rice (30g) and veg.

Bssh. Do you put any veg in the dahl?

Coveredinweetabix · 02/10/2013 22:57

Another good FD here. All I ate was a baked potato with prawns and a salad at lunchtime. I did the Shred and 20 mins on my exercise bike this evening. I am getting very frustrated at my lack of weight loss. First FD was 2nd Sept and I have lost 2lbs. I am now sat at 11st the morning after a FD and 11st 1 the morning after a NFD. I am doing 4:3 this week and will continue to do so until I get break the 11st barrier. I have had lots of NSV but want to be 10st something.

southeastdweller · 02/10/2013 23:09

Bssh chocolate is the only thing I have constantly in my fridge. The William Curley shop is indeed in Belgravia (Ebury Street) and I recommend the salted caramel and earl grey flavours. When I was there on Friday they had free samples Wink. There's two other branches in Richmond and in Harrods. I went to Paul A.Young in Islington today for a few and they're as equally as divine, though more expensive than Curley. Best of luck tomorrow and everyone else who's fasting.

Twinmama32 · 02/10/2013 23:38

Hi all

Thought I'd check in...
Fasting Thursday, sort of did today as felt flu like all day but then OH ordered a dominos pizza and I managed5 slices so obv felt betterBlush
I think I'm plateauing again as 3wks ago I reached a new low of 11st 4 but have been going back and forth btwn 11.7 & 11.9 ever since. However got my tape measure out and was shocked at the measurements:

17 feb 2013 (started fd)
Chest 40"
Waist 42"
Hips 45"

1 oct 2013
Chest 36"
Waist 36"
Hips 38"

Amazed, maybe ill start to believe and see what everyone else can.
I'm still totally stuck in my fat self mentality, it's going to take awhile to see my new look and take it seriously if you know what I mean?! Just goes to show that scales are absolutely not the be all and end all in weight definition , hurrah for the humble tape measure!

whimsicalname · 03/10/2013 04:28

Great stuff twin. Your plateau won't last forever, and perhaps you are converting fat to (heavier) muscle.
