Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

First FD finished on 670. Rubbish :-(

Talkinpeace · 01/10/2013 21:10

Orangey
Yeah, you are right. Utterly dire.
Only 1/4 of what you would normally eat.
Only 1/3 of what your body needs.
Only making it dig deep into reserves and start to learn how things are from now on.
Only not far off 25% of your TDEE (which is the scientific target)
Only PRETTY DARNED GOOD FOR A FIRST DAY.
Enjoy your NFD tomorrow.
You've earned it. Grin

MissStrawberry · 01/10/2013 21:25

Eaten normally today and just had my last thing for today. Tomorrow I need to fast as yesterday's attempt was rubbish. So, to kick start again should I eat nothing until normally dinner time at 7pm? That would be a 21 hour fast. Is that any good?

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 01/10/2013 21:28

Actually ate to tdee today. I allowed myself a chocolate bar rather than my usual truffle. I prefer the truffle - no cravings and only 50 calories. Tired and grumpy now. Gah!

WilsonFrickett · 01/10/2013 21:37

Thanks everyone for such a warm welcome! I don't specifically low carb on fds but think I get a lot more bang for my buck if I focus on protein and veg. Although I like the pizzetta from the recipie book which has a whole wheat tortilla base. I lost 2lb in week one so I'll see how I go I think. I love my pasta too much to give it up - although I always weigh my portion Grin.

HoleyCow · 01/10/2013 21:40

Quick question please - how soon do you start seeing results? Is it as early as the first week or does it take a while to kick in?

Preciousdaisybear · 01/10/2013 21:41

Was having a really good nfd. DH just pissed me off big style. SO tempted to reach for food - having a glass of wine instead in the hope it calms me down. And quiet time by myself and Downton Abbey.

whimsicalname · 01/10/2013 21:48

A glass of wine and Downton sounds ideal precious. It's all about the non food treats! I still have 4 children to feed and get to bed (in the US) and no husband until 10pm. It's a nfd, but i'm tired and grumpy and they're doing my head in! And to make matters worse I've been baking all day for 3 different social things I appear to bedoing tomorrow. Not quite sure how that's happened.

southeastdweller · 01/10/2013 21:52

FD off to a bad start today as I woke up at 4am for no apparent reason and couldn't get back to sleep, then I was late for work due to traffic so arrived at my desk ready to kill someone! Felt better after a coffee then at lunch I had my usual coffee and skinny popcorn. Crazily busy at work meant the day flew by and helped me push through the tiredness. For dinner I had Miso soup from Itsu, a banana and one small piece of bourekia, which I'd never had before and enjoyed it (thanks sophiste).

Looking forward to tomorrow - I'm trying the new orange flavour Green and Blacks...the lemon flavour also came out last week which I feel is my duty to try that one too, next week.

Catching up now.

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 01/10/2013 21:52

Hi Holey :) it really depends how much you need to lose. After my first fd, I experienced changes in appetite and food preferences. I started losing weiggt straight away but I had 4 or 5 stone to lose.

Orangeychoc · 01/10/2013 22:01

Talkinpeace, of course you're right, thanks :-)

postmanpatscat · 01/10/2013 22:03

Well done to today's fasters!

Holey, results vary but I saw results fairly quickly. I lost about 7lbs over the first three weeks.

southeastdweller · 01/10/2013 22:13

Welcome wilson. Like many others here I only low carb on FD's because high carb stuff is calorie dense and just isn't filling for me, unless I have massive portions which obviously is a no-no. However I can be satisfied for six or so hours after breakfasting on just two boiled eggs.

biscuits I'm glad you're feeling better and wanted to testify how much 5:2 can help with addressing emotional eating.

Reality Welcome and I don't have kids either so I hear what you're saying. Good luck and please remember to check in when you can even if you don't have the time to post because these threads are fab for motivation and support.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 01/10/2013 23:34

Welcome wilson :)

FD completed successfully. Dinner was 427 calories, I've come in at just under 600 in total which I'm very happy with.

I don't low carb at all on NFDs, only in that I try to cut out as much refined sugar as possible during the week so that I can indulge at the weekends.
FDs I eat carbs, but you get more food for your calories if you keep the carbs strictly controlled.

zombiesheep · 02/10/2013 07:10

2nd FD in my first week today, wish me luck! :o

eatriskier · 02/10/2013 07:17

morning all. have woken up with a golf ball in the back of my throat, blocked sinuses and very sore ears. lemsip at the ready! thankfully today is an nfd.

zombiesheep · 02/10/2013 07:29

Also another question, my TDEE is 2099 so should i be eating 2099 calories on my NFD's? Is that right? Seems the normal amount!

MelanieCheeks · 02/10/2013 07:51

Calories are very hard to measure accurately, so I wouldn't go with 2099 - that's "around 2000"

FD here, and I'll be sort of eating on the run later - a running session after work (doing an 8 mile cross country run next Saturday), follwed by a dance class. Hard boiled egg, babybel and half a cucumber, is my not terribly gourmet dinner plans!

Neeko · 02/10/2013 07:53

I'm a secondary teacher too Smile and have chosen my FDs as Monday and Thursday as have no non-contact those days so don't have time to think about stomach rumbles. I'm also doing a temp promotion this year and I am busier than ever. That's what attracted me to 5:2 as I didn't have time to count ww points every day. Never going back.

Welcome to all the newcomers. Lots of lovely support on here.

MissStrawberry · 02/10/2013 07:54

Morning all Smile.

Chucking it down.
DS1 in rude, annoying mode.
Cat being cheeky.
Boring errands to do.
And it is a FD!

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 02/10/2013 07:59

Morning everyone!

Weigh in day for me and I've lost 1.6 pounds :)

lucyintheskywithdinos · 02/10/2013 08:28

Well done ali!

NSV for me last night, DP wanted pizza from the take away. I ordered my no-cheese usual and wedges. Couldn't manage all of the wedges and had none of the pizza. I can't quite believe myself.

NFD here, but I'm supposed to be going to MOSI with the out-laws and they are really annoying about food so I may just not bother with lunch today.

BsshBossh · 02/10/2013 09:28

HoleyCow how much you lose in your first week depends on a variety of factors - one of them is how much weight you have to lose in the first place. People with a lot to lose, lose more in the beginning then it tapers off. The average is 1 lb a week but many here have not lost at all until a few weeks in. Be patient and consistent.

Alibabaandthe40nappies woohoo!

southeastdweller you're a chocolate connoiseur aren't you :) There are some lovely indie chocolate shops and stalls here in London - we're very lucky. I love Paul A. Young too. I haven't tried Willian Curley so will pop over there soon - it's in Belgravia, right?

somewherebecomingrain · 02/10/2013 09:36

Hi all.

I don't no- carb particularly on Fds cause I need my carbs - get a bit wierd and wired and wild if I don't have them.

I suppose i do low carb to an extent. But I choose my carbs v carefully - lentils, split peas, kidney beans etc.

Last week got into a good rhythms of FD, PD (pig day), 16:8, FD, PD, 16:8, PD and begin again. But this week I feel that tingling calorie-deficit feeling and am making all my NFDs into PDs.

MissStrawberry · 02/10/2013 12:10

Well done Alibabaa. Reread, thought you said 6 pounds!!

I am struggling, FD and making fish pie for dinner tonight. As usual not weighed anything so struggling to calorie count but would love to know if I can eat something so will look at MFP and see if I can work it out. Have had 3 carrot batons.
