BetsyBell · 19/09/2013 16:58

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Hi all. I find this thread quite hard to keep up with. Some really great results on here.
Today was my first weigh in and I lost 3lbs. I'm delighted.
Fast day 3 here. I have been much hungrier today but I can eat tomorrow. I also have a headache. Does anyone else get these?
I eat 3 very small meals on a few as I teach and not eating makes me grumpy!
I definitely think this woe is for me. I had my DDs birthday at weekend so there were lots of snacks on the go all weekend. I definitely didn't stuff my face the way I have in the past.

Neeko · 30/09/2013 21:40

I am very much an emotional eater and I'm finding this woe is really helping. Now that I know what hunger feels like I am more likely to only eat when hungry.
There were big tins of Roses in the staff room today and I said no without it being hard. Before I'd have eaten at least six without really tasting them.

Coveredinweetabix · 30/09/2013 21:44

I'm feeling very smug today. I had a massive lunch yesterday and then had some of the children's sandwiches at about 4.30 last night and still felt full in the evening despite having done L1D1 of the Shred and 10 mins on the exercise bike so thought I'd do 16:8... which I cruised through so turned it into a full FD and made it to Zumba this evening and leaped around with oodles of energy. So far, I haven't managed to do any exercise on FDs as I've felt so light headed.
My only issue now is whether I wait until Fri to fast again (I usually do Tues & Fri) or do Weds as well making this a 4:3 week.
I am desperately hoping to break the 11st mark when I weigh in on Weds as that will be a month since I started this WOE.

Hmm, so whoever said the carbs were not a good start was probably right. I ditched the FD attempt and came in at 1300 which is ok for a NFD I think.

So tomorow I will go again for first fast day. What do you guys think of this plan:

Meal 1 (will last as long as possible before eating): 2 eggs and handful cherry tomatoes (150 cal)

Meal 2 (evening): Tin of tuna (200cal) with salad & ??

Or does anyone have any other non-meat FD suggestions?

Thanks :-)

Orangeychoc · 30/09/2013 21:56

Just found a skinny soup in the fridge so that's only 200cal for big tub. Maybe ill have that for lunch and veg frittata for dinner?

Talkinpeace · 30/09/2013 22:00

Orangey
It is really important to make what you eat look and feel like a meal rather than a snack : to tell the brain that the kitchen is closed afterwards

wrigglebum · 30/09/2013 22:30

southeast- not sure I have any before pics around but I can certainly post some after pics.

I wore a bikini today to take ds2 swimming and felt pretty confident in it.

whimsicalname · 01/10/2013 03:02

Much better fd today than last week. Skinny latte, green beans, apple and then prosciutto, eggs and spinach for supper followed by a wapping great toffee cos I reckoned I'd done pretty well. Had a good walk and managed not to be too horrible to the children. And I'm still awake at 9.30.

eatriskier · 01/10/2013 06:53

wriggle thats a massive nsv. I can't see myself ever in a bikini again, my stomach somewhat resembles the Paris Metro map if drawn by Dali. Never mind my boobs...

Great FD yesterday, clear out successful and aunt flo banished. 0.5lb down from where I was before she arrived and piled weight on me. That's small for me but great too as I was trying to slow this train. 0.5in off my waist and hips too which is more important to me in the grand scheme of things. I'm beginning to relax a bit more around food now too. I may have some over days but they're being tempered by lower days and my strategy for going forward seems to be formulating.

For the first time people are asking why I'm still trying to lose weight - great NSV! But I'm at the cusp of normal BMI and I want to be at a level where I can bounce a bit either way and not be under or overweight. And its all about getting rid of this tummy flab.

Hula hooping is fantastic btw, I am absolutely loving it.

HoleyCow · 01/10/2013 07:12

Hello. Am new to this thread and have probably stupid questions!
I am a low carber and want to stay that way but add fasting to the mix to speed up weight loss and for the other health benefits that fasting brings. This will work, won't it?
Secondly, is a 24 hour fast actually a 36 hour fast or do both methods work - albeit one more slowly than the other. (I ate On Sunday evening, ate less than 500 calories, low carb, yesterday and broke my fast this morning)
Sorry to jump in with questions, seems a bit rude but you all sound very lovely and am hoping you can help :)

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 01/10/2013 07:28

I messed up yesterday. I did well at work, sticking to 200 cals with a view to have another 300 after work. Well I only ate a full chocolate orange. The only excuse I have to give is that I had a shit day. I started a new job just under 2 months ago and I really really wanted it to work out, but I don't think it will. One of the reasons being I don't feel like I fit in with the team, often feel left out. There is one person who appears to be the popular one who is quite influential and I think she has taken a dislike to me. I'd look for another job, but I can't give a real reason why I want to leave this job that doesn't make me see unprofessional. So I'm feeling rubbish ATM.

Sorry to offload there.

MissStrawberry · 01/10/2013 07:46

I heard Talkinpeace's voice in my head this morning Grin. I remembered I was going food shopping after dropping the kids at school so thought I had better have some toast. I remembered I had 2 mini tartlets left so thought I would have those. Opened the box, looked at them and thought about the garlic breath I would have and the fact I wasn't hungry and left them. They were saying eat me but I didn't listen. I will take them in the car and only eat them when I am hungry

Biscuits - sorry to hear that. I remember when my DH started a new job and knew immediately it wasn't for him. I made him stay a year though as it wouldn't look good on his cv and I think he has forgiven me. Sometimes you just know it isn't right and you should move on but other times it just takes longer to settle. Is there anyone you could talk too about it?

Neeko · 01/10/2013 07:49

Biscuits. Don't beat yourself up. You didn't "fail" yesterday. This is a marathon, not a sprint and -from what I've read on here- a good woe to stop you from emotional eating. We've all eaten chocolate to combat stress or misery at some point.
As for work: it can take a while to get in with a new team and it's early days yet. Did you replace someone that they all got on well with? That can make it harder because they are subconsciously looking for you to be that person. I'd advise focusing on doing a good job and just being yourself. Give it time and try to keep smiling at work at least.

Had a lovely milky coffee there. Why does it taste so good the morning after a FD? It was only skimmed milk yet tasted indulgent! Smile

MelanieCheeks · 01/10/2013 08:03

Orangey those choices - eggs, tuna, veg soup - all sound great, play around with combinations till you're happy.

Way to go, wriggle!

Holey either 24 or 36 hours is fine, but most of us do the eat one day-sleep-fast - sleep - eat approach. But I've used a 24-hour fast at times when it's been impossble to fit in a full second day. Low carbing works very well with 5:2ing.

Biscuits I hope things get better for you, new jobs are always a bit intimidating.

BetsyBell · 01/10/2013 08:21

Phew - body seems to be back on a downward track. It's been in full 'hold on to everything' mode for a few weeks (does anyone else get that?) so I've been fighting to maintain. Hopefully this morning's weigh in signals a time of loss, I'm still 3 pounds above my pre-holiday weight (was +6lbs) but hopefully I can shift that now.

However, I must take a positive weigh in as encouragement to keep up the good work not as a sign I can relax. I can't believe I still have to remind myself of this.

4 to 6pm is still the danger zone (ie when I'm in the kitchen...). I don't normally have any other time to snack and I'm really good at stopping after my evening meal so I really must not giver myself permission to forage then.

Sorry, it's all me me me Grin

wrigglebum Woohoo! WHat a fab feeling :D

oh no biscuits. no one ever tells you that some people never mature past school yard level do they? its a bummer. positive thoughts coming your way

Betsy well done on the return to downwards

neeko I love how good food tastes in and just after a fast day. even the simplest thing is like manna Grin

I have about 8 episodes and counting of masterchef Australia to catch up on. had to remind myself yesterday that it wasn't a good idea to watch them on a fast day!

KinkyDorito · 01/10/2013 08:52

Holey I'm just starting this today too. I've been low carb for 5 weeks now and it has helped me to control my hunger much more effectively, but I am interested in the health benefits of fasting. I did a kind of fast from Saturday to Sunday but I felt disgusting. I'm hoping that today will be better. Off to Sainsbo's in a bit to stock up on Miso soup and ibuprofen Wink.

KinkyDorito · 01/10/2013 08:52

And I'm already hungry...

KinkyDorito · 01/10/2013 08:55

From what I've read, biscuits, fasting is incredibly tough if you are under stress and it sounds like you are having a stressful time. Don't be hard on yourself. It will happen. Says me who hasn't even done Day 1 properly yet Grin Grin.

lucyintheskywithdinos · 01/10/2013 09:04

FD here. It's DP's last day at his current job so I'll be breaking the fast tonight in a very unhealthy fashion to celebrate!

BetsyBell · 01/10/2013 09:13

KinkyDorito I posted you a big reply upthread which I hope you find useful.

Poor Biscuits, it's really awful when we come across high school behaviour in an adult environment. One of the benefits of fasting in times of stress is it gives us a feeling of control over at least one aspect of our lives and helps us focus, and eventually helps with the emotional eating too.

Don't worry about fasting fails, just look towards the next one instead. You managed a whole work day on 200 calories which is brilliant and you'll be able to do it again.

Maybe for your next fast day have an emergency item you can allow yourself should you need it - I sometimes have a mini Green and Blacks in the cupboard as a standby - if you make it dark chocolate then you get the chocolate fix without getting the massive sugar hit.

Lots of people swear by sugar-free jelly for a very low calorie sweet treat.

OP posts:
BsshBossh · 01/10/2013 09:21

Yesterday's FD was successful - despite not being hungry I still mentally needed to eat something (if only for the taste and texture in my mouth) and ended up finishing the day on 260 cals (a cup a soup, a 10 cal jelly, an apple and a handful of grapes - all in a single "meal" at night).

2 NFDs now. I'm cooking paneer, coconut and beetroot curry for tonight's dinner and will have a wild rice salad with feta, olives and cherry tomatoes for lunch. Not really hungry for breakfast.

BetsyBell · 01/10/2013 09:29

eastriskier I keep not replying to your posts though I find myself thinking about them! The whole people saying you don't need to lose more weight - I think part of that is they're used to seeing you a certain way and have yet to get used to the slimmer version and another part (probably unconsciously) is often jealousy. I hope you have loved ones who are pleased for you and cheering you on.

Fantastic that you are on the cusp of 'normal', very exciting - you're going to smash through that in no time and you'll want to get yourself firmly in the middle of that 'normal' section.

I loved the surrealist Paris metro reference - I can totally relate to it! My tummy, although relatively flab-free, is is horror show! But it all gets covered up by a slightly higher-waisted bikini and supportive bikini tops aren't too hard to come by either! Come next summer I reckon you'll be happy to be beaching it up bikini-style :)

BetsyBell · 01/10/2013 09:40

Holeycow Welcome :) I think most of us low carb on fast days anyway and naturally end up toning down on the carbs most other days though exclusion is not the name of the game here.

I don't think there's any problem with low carbing and fasting if that's what you prefer. It seems it's quite important to have a marked contrast between calorie intake on fast days and non fast days so try and make sure you're eating somewhere near your TDEE on NFDs. I think many of us go for a week that looks like this:

Monday: fast
Tuesday & Wednesday: eat to within 10% of TDEE
Thursday: fast
Friday: Up to TDEE
Weekend: Go over TDEE a bit.

Fast 'days' are really more like 36 hours - starting after your evening meal on eg Sunday, 'fasting' all day Monday with an allowance of 500 calories, then eating normally (ie to your TDEE) on Tuesday.

The links in the OP are well worth looking through if you haven't already, loads of useful stuff in there.
