Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 27 - Season of fasts and mellow rumblingness (with apologies to Keats)

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Morning everyone :)

FD here, badly needed. Yesterday went badly wrong, far too many carbs and I felt revolting.
NSV though, belt is looser despite the scales being static.

Dinner tonight is baked plaice with black bean vegetables and rice. 423 calories.
I will just have splashes of milk in tea and a small apple until then, I'm aiming for 550-600 in total today.

MrsFlorrick · 01/10/2013 09:59

Morning everyone.

FD today. Fingers crossed i will make itSmile feeling a bit hungry already. Argh.

Wrigglebum. Congrats! Wow. Well done to you!

Biscuits. Look for another job! Don't stay in one you dislike. As for a reason: "I am looking for a more challenging opportunity to further myself". That's all you would have to tell a prospective employer. You will feel so much better.

At least have a good old look at other jobs available. Perhaps your ultimate dream job is lurking? Worth a look and possibly a few interviews at any rate.

Good luck fasters today Grin

Orangeychoc · 01/10/2013 10:30

First fast day ok so far (but its only 10.30am haha).

Forgot to ask what doesn't count in the fast? I assume I can drink water?? What about peppermint tea?

I'm in awe with the posters on this thread, think its going to be my new home. Love the idea if finally taking control back over food rather than it controlling me.

KinkyDorito · 01/10/2013 10:31

Thanks Betsy. I'm feeling a bit out of it at the moment, but do wonder how much of that is psychological. Saying that, I drank two big glasses of water and two giant cups of herbal tea and still felt dehydrated, so suspect ketosis is in swing. Lots of water, lots of herbal teas, and, because I'm not working today, I'm going to try to go through to the evening without a meal. When I try and fast at work, I'm really going to have to think how to go about it as I hate having a rumbling stomach there.

KinkyDorito · 01/10/2013 10:32

Orangey I'm mainlining peppermint tea today Grin.

KinkyDorito · 01/10/2013 10:32

Hopefully the book will turn up today to motivate me!

BetsyBell · 01/10/2013 10:33

Orangeychoc All herbal and black tea/coffee (and water!) count as zero - if you want milk just add the calories on to your daily tally - I think a splash of semi skimmed is 15 calories. Good luck with your first fast and keep checking back here for support! When you feel hungry have a drink and see if you can wait it out for another 20 mins. :)

Thanks betsy, will do!

BetsyBell · 01/10/2013 10:37

Kinky I've seen you on other threads so I know you work in a school like me - I can't do school days without a little something for lunch (my mornings run on caffeine) but even 150 cals of salad gets me through the afternoon of the little darlings Grin. Good luck but don't make yourself ill!

Have you watched the Horizon episode KinkyD? There's a ink in the op which hopefully still works.

Help! Just done the food shop and written out the menu for this week. However some of what I have bought is from ideas picked up from this thread but I can't find them anywhere. Some, maybe not all, of what I will list is from your ideas. Can anyone point me in the right direction please?

Peppers
Mushrooms
Spinach
Salami

Not all were on my shopping list as I would have had them in the food cupboard but the above seem to have been bought for a reason Confused.

HoleyCow · 01/10/2013 10:54

Thanks everyone for the replies! I think low carb + 5:2 might work very well for me. I got an app, or possibly an "in app purchase" from Marie Claire on Sunday for £1.20ish which has some lovely low cal meals specifically for this fasting diet. I have just been through them and found the low cal/low carb choices. Yesterday we had some lovely cod on a bed of tomatoes and beans in a neat little greaseproof paper parcel which was wonderful. Served it to the rest of the family with spuds - everyone was happy and I have been asked to do it again - result!

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 01/10/2013 12:32

BsshBossh, paneer, coconut and beetroot? Do tell!

NFD here, and went very well - I made myself add a boiled egg to my usual toast breakfast, I did have a toasted sandwich for lunch which wasn't what I really wanted but it was the best option in a limited cafe (this is always tricky when I'm out with the DDs - they're very young, the youngest needs a LOT of supervision, realistically I need to order something that I can eat with one hand and/or take with me later if everything melts down, so a chicken caesar salad is not v practical), and then a huge bowl of what I call Everything Salad for dinner. Ham, avocado, chopped boiled egg, loads of raw veg in a homemade ranch dressing. YUM.

Very pleased, because it's the NFDs that are my downfall; I end up eating badly out of sheer laziness and/or lack of imagination. So today feels good, and I bet I'll wake up tomorrow feeling nice and 'clean', if you know what I mean.

MissS, that sounds like ingredients from TIP 's frittata maybe?

Talkinpeace · 01/10/2013 12:36

MissStrawb Frittata / spanish omelette ...... and sorry I was in your head but glad it worked for a good reason.

Eatriskier
Get a tan on your tummy. even out of a bottle. Its made the Amazon delta on mine much less offensive!

Biscuits Onward and upward. The eejits are just a stepping stone!

MissStrawberry · 01/10/2013 12:45

Omelette! Didn't even guess that. Thank you. Is it for a FD or not? I have just started today's lunch and plan to fast tomorrow.

BsshBossh · 01/10/2013 12:46

Tortoise the beetroot and paneer curry is this one from the October edition of Delicious magazine. Only 383 cals a serving, so with a tiny portion of rice, would make an ideal FD meal too.

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 01/10/2013 13:47

Thanks for the support and encouragement everyone. I am feeling better now. Had a chat with my manager and feel better, its just going to take time.

As for foodwise I will be able to stick to my TDEE today so will do and tomorrows a new day and all that.

I'll catch up later

eatriskier · 01/10/2013 14:00

Glad you're feeling more upbeat biscuits

Any other Tassimo owners here - One thing I've really been missing and can't ever seem to squeeze them in mainly through bad timing are lattes and cappuccinos. Popped into Costco a couple of weeks ago and they had an offer on costa cappuccino. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that they're only 45cals a cup. And DH has bought me some costa caramel latte ones which are 95cals. They taste really yummy and are far lower than one you would buy in store, probably because they aren't real milk etc. But they feel so nice and luxurious.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 01/10/2013 14:05

Just checking in to keep me on track with my fast! Not a morsel has passed my lips yet.

I am cold though, I really need to remember to look for some thin thermals I can wear day to day.

Kinky the rumbling tummy does diminish as you get used to the fasting. This is week 3 for me now and I haven't had what I would call a serious hunger pang all day so far, whereas the first day I fasted I was starving by 11am and had to have an apple. It gets easier :)

lucyintheskywithdinos · 01/10/2013 15:05

Fast day going well, lots of hot water to drink and a lovely big black coffee this evening.

DP is finding my weight loss is making him feel that he should lose weight too. He has four stone to lose, same as me when I started, but I'm only a stone and a half away from target now. I'm trying to be helpful and supportive but there are only so many polite ways to say 'stop eating so much Galaxy chocolate'!

Orangeychoc · 01/10/2013 15:17

1st FD going ok. Made it to 3.15pm and now having soup.

Orangeychoc · 01/10/2013 15:18

How do I calculate my TDE to aim for on non fast days?

Talkinpeace · 01/10/2013 15:19

link in the OP, height, weight, age, set low activity (to give yourself some leeway)

KinkyDorito · 01/10/2013 15:24

Hi Ali Smile - it's not been as bad today as I thought, but I am very conscious that I'm not eating. It also seems to come in waves.

I am swishing when I walk from the sheer amount of herbal tea and water I've had. I 'lunched' on a cup of miso and I am now 'snacking' on soup from a green oxo cube. My cals must be around 60. Am planning a salad with a tin of tuna and olives for tea, keeping within 440 cals.

Betsy I watched the docu after I saw my parents at the weekend and my book has just turned up! My parents have never dieted even though they have watched me perpetually go up and down in weight since 15. I think they have been seduced by two slim friends of theirs who are doing it for the longevity aspect. The reason I want to try is I have fibromyalgia and I am sick and tired of having no energy and brain fog. I'm seriously hoping it might improve. I have got a load of weight to lose, but that's not my main motivator. Low carb has cleared up my IBS in 5 weeks, which has been amazing, so this is the next step. It certainly is a WOE for life that I'm after. I'm sick of being ill all of the time.

BetsyBell · 01/10/2013 16:02

Kinky There's another forum out there which has some great stuff on - I just did a quick search for fibromyalgia and there's a fair bit on there which might be useful: Linky
