The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

The broad bean spinach and pecorino frittata was amazing, filling, tasty. And my 6mo dd had a bit!

Dotty342kids · 30/09/2013 18:26

All good here. Had a quorn mini egg at about 4.30 as was flagging. Dinner now cooking and will have once done the pick up from cubs. 1hr to go!

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 30/09/2013 18:43

546 including two bitesize brownies (an automatic eat unfortunately). The only time I was hungry was while cooking tea but, as usual, I had 3 meals :)

MissStrawberry · 30/09/2013 18:47

Failed Sad.

BsshBossh · 30/09/2013 18:50

Monday FD going well - not even a hunger pang (lots of head hunger though), which confirms that I ate more than a day's worth of food yesterday. One mug of black coffee and loads of water all day. Will break the fast with soup and fruit later, after DD's in bed.

somewherebecomingrain · 30/09/2013 18:51

Another fast day comes to a close. By 3.30pm I felt ok. The hard bits were 11-2pm.

Well done all you fasters. There is a real feeling of achievement.

What I also like is that I've never enjoyed my food more. Guilt free, greed free, true hunger and satisfaction. All ours tomorrow.

Mustn't forget there are more important things than food of course. Do wonder if I'm getting obsessed.

KinkyDorito · 30/09/2013 19:01

Sulking because I was all ready to read my book and give it a go and it still hasn't turned up!!

On Saturday I ate at 2pm then didn't eat again until 10am the next day, but it did make me feel pretty rubbish all day.

What are other people's experiences of early fasts? Do you get side effects? I have fibromyalgia which causes fatigue, so I need to be careful not to make that worse, but keen to have a go because of health benefits and excess three stones.

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 30/09/2013 19:05

Any care you took over the food you ate will help you stay healthy MissS and, if you were nearer to tdee than 500 - so what? You can just sling in an extra fd or mini-fast later in the week. That's the joy of 5:2.

Chin up, love. Have a Brew

lucyintheskywithdinos · 30/09/2013 19:18

Successful NFD here, I'm so chuffed with myself for breaking the habit of snacking. I had parsnip and lentil soup for dinner, with raspberry and chocolate brownie (an experimental recipe I invented that uses chickpea flour) for dessert.

Fasting now, 7pm to 7pm. It is my easy fast day though, too busy to think about eating on Tuesdays and extra busy as we have lovely guests!

MissS I have no idea if you are the same as me in this, but I know I would tend to think 'well, failed that diet then' and start eating crap, but as Helles said, just chuck in an extra fast later in the week. Can you identify why it happened?

BetsyBell · 30/09/2013 19:18

KinkyD I find lunch only fasts much harder going than small lunch + slightly bigger evening meal. I've only done it a couple of times in the last 9 months and I really wouldn't do it again unless it was necessary for some reason.

Fast day eating today:
Lunch: sainsbury's Chicken something or rather meal soup (200cals)
Evening meal: Homemade veg & black bean soup (prob 200cals)
Misc drinks with splashes of milk approx 50cals

(My lunches are usually salad leaves and veg with ham and/or boiled egg so more like 150cals and dinners a little larger.)

This way of doing it might suit you better? At least at first while you're getting used to it. Most people seem to just go for the evening meal but I rarely do it that way. However, I eat my evening meal early the day before so get a good number of fasting hours in!

People do report varying side effects but they seem to disappear after a few fasts - say a couple of months. I used to feel vary dizzy and peculiar after breaking my fast the next day but this went away in time, and I learnt to avoid carbs for breakfast after an FD.

You do just get used to it Smile

Emmabryant123 · 30/09/2013 19:23

I don't eat lunch on a FD.
Waste of time IMO as ill only be just as hungry come dinner time so may aswell save the cals and be truly satisfied after FD meal.
(An extra 5 hours when only eating only 500cal) is nothing.
Each to our own though.

MissStrawberry · 30/09/2013 19:32

I tried hard.

Had nothing until about half one then had some miso soup as I was frozen. Remembered I had some left over roast beef and decided I would have a small wafer thin piece but when I opened the box it was the wrong one and in it were my home made tartlets. I had 2 Hmm. Fed kids. Ate 4 chips and a piece of chicken in breadcrumbs. Really annoyed about that. Tea was home made wedges, red onion and tomatoes all roasted together with a pork chop. I am annoyed as I went without food for most of the day for nothing if I have gone so far over 500 that I have to have this has a none fast day.

MissStrawberry · 30/09/2013 19:35

I am still struggling a bit to do the official fasts as in be able to say I didn't eat for X hours. And when to do them.

BsshBossh · 30/09/2013 19:46

MsS you made it to 1.30pm - that's a good fast even if you went over 500 cals. Try again next FD. It'll click for you.

MissStrawberry · 30/09/2013 19:53

I think I will eat normally tomorrow and then FD on Wednesday. Trying to resist eating some chocolate tonight as I am not hungry, it is just emotional hunger.

BsshBossh · 30/09/2013 20:10

Question for seasoned fasters: I'm not hungry at all. Should I just skip food today and make it a 36 hour fast?

Talkinpeace · 30/09/2013 20:13

it is just emotional hunger.
yup. your tummy did not take you into the kitchen to look in boxes. Your brain did.
Next fast day, have a bottle of water with you and drink a whole pint before you darken the door of the kitchen.
THe kitchen is closed between meals.
Snacking is a really big problem and seems to be linked to emotional eating.
Mindfulness may well help you on that aspect.

SchrodingersFanny · 30/09/2013 20:14

Try not to beat yourself MissS. I am usually fine until the evenings, and then want to pick

I fasted today, as a change because of my maintain. I find fasting at work much easier, so thought I would try Monday and Wednesday. And this week I might try a third fast o Friday.

I found today much easier as I also skipped breakfast, had a slim soup at lunch (50cal) and then veg hotpot for tea. I feel OK, but I always get tension headaches on FDs. I do drink loads of water, but doesn't seem to help.

southeastdweller · 30/09/2013 20:33

Congrats wriggle on your achievement. Can we expect some before and after pics?

Well done janey on such a fab start.

How're you getting on orangey? No need to be scared though it's understandable. We've been conditioned to think that something very bad will happen if we don't eat three square meals a day and it is utter crap. You can do it, just like so many of us.

JB30 · 30/09/2013 20:44

Poor MissS, sounds like you were taken over by the gobble monster - it's real you know, made me eat 2 bags of crisps, half a bag of aero bubbles, that's a large bag just in case of confusion, plus another few squares of chocs yesterday.
You didn't fail, you fell - bet you're still only at 50% of your tdee, betcha! Call it a mini fast, close the kitchen and on Wednesday have a plan - 2 meals maybe, lunch & dinner possibly, low carb like was discussed last week. 500-700 should be grand.
FD today, 530 but finished with an orange which is making me a bit hungry but the kitchen is most def closed. Extremely crap weekend of eating, piggery at its best!
Exercise in the morning, really gotta get back to it, not sick anymore. Not sure if I'll do Wednesday or Thursday fast...hmmm decisions decisions

BetsyBell · 30/09/2013 20:49

In school holidays I can fast all day no problem - I don't care if I'm a bit moody/spaced with my own kids! In term time I really need a little lunch to get me through the afternoon of working/running around with an awful lot of young children - 150 calories seems to do the trick.

MissS I just announced to no one in particular that "the kitchen is now closed". Do the same and keep out of the chocolate cupboard!

Sophiste · 30/09/2013 20:51

I must say I find FD much easier on two meals than one. I tend to have black coffee in the morning, soup for lunch (100-150 cals) preferably thick veggie/lentil soup rather than the thin and brothy kind. Then 300-350 cals for a healthy supper of protein with a big pile of salad or cooked veg. Days like that I find pretty effortless.

Not like today! I decided to front-load my FD with a good breakfast (abt 200 cals) on the basis that I really needed to get my system moving (I'll leave it at that as any more would be TMI).

As a result it felt like a looooong day at work, no lunchbreak, and by about 5.30pm I was virtually hallucinating about food. Got home at 7.15pm and savoured every mouthful of my bourekia (Waitrose, 2 for 165 cals) and salad. Spinach & watercress have never tasted so good.

Stuck to 500 cals but I really felt it today.

LikeaHurricane · 30/09/2013 20:52

Bssh, if that's what you feel doing then go with it. I'm with you actually and tomorrow will be the only day this week when I will eat breakfast Smile

BetsyBell · 30/09/2013 20:55

Sophiste Effortless - yes same pattern for me too. While I was cooking the soup I snuck a couple of black eyed beans from the tin and my god they tasted AMAZING. It's definitely a perk of this WOE just how delicious everything is when you're truly hungry.

NotAsTired · 30/09/2013 21:14

I found fd hard today. Mostly because it was a carb fest yesterday. Lots of potatoes, rice, ladoos and crisps. It was a bit much for one day really and I felt very hungry and very sluggish today - like I never fully woke up. Sad
