The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Morning Monday fasters! Get, set, go :)

janey1234 · 30/09/2013 09:21

Third day of fasting today. And a weigh in - lost 3lbs in my first week, amazing Smile

janey1234 · 30/09/2013 09:24

Oh, although still got 2 stone to go Hmm

BetsyBell · 30/09/2013 09:28

Good morning! First this my DH said to me today - "are you fasting?" - yup - Monday = fast day! He's decided to join with almost all of my fast days now, so much so that on Friday (after aborted Thursday hungover attempt), as he was reaching for the bread to toast I said "aren't you fasting then?" cue, slow retraction of hand away from the carbs Grin.

Lots of delicious food over the weekend including some baking. The lovely thing is that I focus on really good food when I 'indulge' rather than quantity so although it feels like I've had an extremely foody weekend it's a different to how it once was.

Oh and another benefit of 5:2 - DH's new boss is also an advocate so he's a good 'in' with him!

Another one fasting today.

wrigglebum. Well done Smile

NotAsTired · 30/09/2013 09:50

Betsy. Grin at your husband.

NotAsTired · 30/09/2013 09:51

Janey Super start.

Preciousdaisybear · 30/09/2013 09:58

Morning! FD day 2 week 1. Feeling good and positive even though scales don't show ANY loss so far ARGGHH Sad. Hoping all goes well today though in hospital with DS2 and last time we were in I scoffed an entire bag of reese's peanut butter cups... I have my veggies all prepared and will stay away from the shop Grin. Have a good day everyone.

ps still can't see this thread. I have to go through breadandwines link each time.

BetsyBell · 30/09/2013 10:06

Ooh, many a typo in my previous post Blush - I declare it much needed COFFEE TIME!

OP posts:
MelanieCheeks · 30/09/2013 10:10

Morning all, Monday fasters and the rest of you!

Much coffee and water and Marigold bouilon and herbal teas and more water....

Veggie stirfry for dinner I think, though it'll have to be quick as I've got a meeting this evening. I have an emergency weight watchers lasagne in the freezer if needed.

BetsyBell · 30/09/2013 10:10

Precious have you taken any measurements or noticed clothes feeling different? The scales do not tell the whole story which is why we like to give lots of credit to non scale victories. Do you have much to lose? Do avoid the Reese's - calorific nightmare!! Good luck.

I had one thread I couldn't see at all even though I started it Hmm, I had to add it to my watch list. There are some strange anomalies on this here Mumsnet!

OP posts:
Preciousdaisybear · 30/09/2013 10:14

betsy must take measurements. Job for later when we get home. Calculated bmi and it made me want to cry. Yes I am officially obese. Grrr but it's good motivation. I need to lose about 2 st so it's game on...

hi ho hi ho it's off to hospital we go. Check in later.

Orangeychoc · 30/09/2013 10:43

Morning all
Long time lurker on MN but have just signed up to post on here. Seriously want to join the fasting crew but scared as to how it will make me feel. I've had porridge this morning (215 cal) so unlikely to make a proper fast day but I think I'll aim for less than 800 and call it a practice day!! Does that sound ok?

MissStrawberry · 30/09/2013 11:07

Morning all.

FD today. Not in a good mood so not sure if I should fast though I am determined to do it. Going to start a thread if I dare

Breadandwine · 30/09/2013 11:08

Mornin', Orangeychoc, and welcome!

That'll do for your first day, but most (all?) of us try and avoid carbs on a fast day - too many calories.

But there's no harm in easing yourself into this WOL - you'll soon discover how easy it is.

I don't eat breakfast or lunch on FDs, so I'll leave it to others to give you advice on that.

Precious, I've got this thread - plus the maintainers thread, the 5:2 recipe thread and the Tips and Links thread - bookmarked. One click and I'm in.

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 30/09/2013 12:00

Evening all, I'm at the other end of the ubiquitous Monday fast from the rest of you. About to go pour myself a huge mug of peppermint tea.

DH officially received his doctorate on Friday, and his relatives flew in to help celebrate, so it was a weekend of much good food and rejoicing - but I must've listened to myself on some level, because I ended it at the same weight I started. Just trying to work out what to eat for dinner tomorrow now. Anyone want to talk light, healthy, fresh NFD dinners with me? I'm coming out of a very long winter, and feel like salads and stir-fries again but i'm out of practice with a summer menu rotation.

Emmabryant123 · 30/09/2013 12:24

NFD Monday as hubby and me at work.
Easier for me to fast at work. I just take no food and drink coffee with milk from the machine all day (15cal a cup)
Three cups so 45 cal...
Then come home and have a 500-600 cal meal. Not very strict on the calories as I don't have a lot to loose always end up between 500-700 cals on fds.
Then on the other days I never have breakfast anyway so eat snack around 10am at work. Lunch about 1230 and dinner at 7 Ish.

Today me and hubby had cheese and crackers about 12pm
Got ham, hm chips and egg for dinner (will scramble mine I think)
Fruit salad (banana, peaches, grapes and pineapple with natural yoghurt for pud) if wanted.

Emmabryant123 · 30/09/2013 12:25

Meant to say *not at work.

whimsicalname · 30/09/2013 13:07

FD here today, and about to do the long march to preschool (2miles each way) which I only do once a week.

Weighed in at 10st1, which is annoyingly only 1lb less than last week, but then I did lose 4lbs for weigh in last week, so 5 in 2 (as it were) is still a victory. And I'm wearing my favourite pre preg jeans, so that too is a victory.

Congrats to Mr Tortoise. Are you in Australia? I got all confused for a minute about why you would want to be eating salads in winter... We eat salad nicoise quite a lot (but with no tuna) - green beans, bit of potato, anchovies, egg, olives, tomato, leaves. Garlicky dressing. Yum.

Pollysbubble · 30/09/2013 13:44

Hi everyone,
Usual Monday fast day for me - much need as well after birthday celebrations for my little one over the weekend - lots of cake and party food consumed!
Have just spent my lunch break at work catching up with you all on this thread - my usual trick on a Monday which boosts my motivation and makes skipping lunch that bit easier.
Stir fry for dinner tonight and then must get my head round the 'kitchen closed' tip to make today's fast a successful one!
Goo luck fellow Monday fasters!

MissStrawberry · 30/09/2013 13:47

My FD is going okay. I had some miso soup an hour or so ago but it was more because I was cold than anything else but I feel able to wait until dinner tonight. We are having pork chop and wedges but I am not sure if will be allowed any wedges as I haven't looked at the calorie count of the pork chop yet.

somewherebecomingrain · 30/09/2013 13:48

Well done janey great start. precious stick with it. I've been stuck weight wise for weeks on 11 and a half stone. But it's all a bit mysterious - lost 2 inches off my belt.

Yes am still bouncing back up to 11 and a half from 11.3! Think it must be exercise.

Fasting today. It's harder as I've been more disciplined on nfds. Am having broad bean and spinach frittata for dinner from the mimi spencer cookbook.

Talkinpeace · 30/09/2013 15:18

Caffeine fuelled fast day today. Morning at the gym, this afternoon was dentist. I know how to enjoy myself.

Non fast day week night suppers
I'm a huge fan of frittata / spanish tortilla
as you start with the base of onions and garlic, then any interesting veg you fancy, then maybe some salami or cubes of ham, then some parmesan, then the eggs and grated cheese at the end as a topping.
FD version just skips the meat and cheese
and the hunk of fresh bread

and the glass of wine Wink

also, poor man's coq au vin : small onion cut into 1 inch chunks, button mushrooms chopped in half, pack of chicken breast chunks, cloves of garlic cut in half, tin of tomatoes, herbs, salt, pepper, dollop of olive oil
stir together in a baking tray, cover with foil, shove in the oven to cook on a low heat while doing all the after school errands
serve with pasta or rice or cous cous or bread or salad

plecofjustice · 30/09/2013 16:52

Getting back on the wagon after 3 weeks off for wedding and house move - thought it would be a good idea in the run up to the wedding to do a 4:3 with only 100 cals on FD's. Don't do it! Passed out the day before the wedding and got dragged for an emergency carb-fest by my mum who was convinced I was on course for some sort of eating disorder Blush

Don't know how much I've gained in this time, but hoping it's not too awful. I'm not weighing until I've done a few fasts, just to get my equilibrium back

Emmabryant123 · 30/09/2013 17:48

So had my dinner- ham, egg, hm chips followed by chopped banana, blackberries, raspberries, red grapes covered in onken natural yoghurt yummy! Thoroughly enjoyed and very full.
Today so far had come in at a estimated 1522 calories. I say estimated as I didn't weigh my cheese or butter that I had on crackers that I had this morning so over estimated on them.
Taking no food to work tomorrow. So dinner 6:30 at home.
Allready prepared and in fridge. Tuna salad. Tuna, lettuce, cherry toms, red pepper, cucumber, beetroot and tiny bit of coleslaw.
Pudding same as today. Prepared in fridge.

Repeat after me'i am full up kitchen is now closed tonight'

How's the Monday fasters got on ?
