The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

So I'm sitting on my lunch break, still haven't eaten. Am sipping low calorie tonic water and am very hungry! I still feel tired too like I haven't woken up yet, I hope this will pass soon!
Thanks for all the advice as well :o

Dotty342kids · 29/09/2013 15:33

As usual weekend is involving far too much food and drink! It's actually quite hard eating three meals in a day I now find. I often skip breakfast or lunch on NFDs now as it's just too much to eat three big meals.
Today, DH insisted on me having a fried egg muffin with rest of family for breakfast, then made us all lunch which, if left to my own devices I'd have missed, and now we've got roast chicken and rhubart tarts and custard for dinner.
Seriously, cannot wait for FD tomorrow!

Lovely thing yesterday.... went to Gap (never particularly suited Gap clothes before) and brought two pairs of straight leg size 30 cords which are equivalent of size 12 I think? And they fit beautifully! So happy to be a nice, consistent, size 12 again. Happy to lose a couple more pounds to get easily into healthy BMI range but being a 12 suits my body so in general, it's all good Smile

Talkinpeace · 29/09/2013 16:44

Well done Dotty
and yes, three square meals a day makes me rather more round than I like.

This morning I had a lovely big fry up breakfast then lunch was a mug of tea and then we are having a blow out supper because DD is home from her weekend away.
Tomorrow will be nothing except soup for supper but then I'm going out for Lunch on Tuesday so will scoff then having skipped breakfast.

postmanpatscat · 29/09/2013 17:11

Great news dotty :)

11k run for me this morning, then a slow crawl round Tesco because DP was with me and has to read the calorie count on EVERYTHING whereas on my own I'll just whizz round bunging stuff in the trolley - the joys of 5:2! I wish he'd bring his reading glasses because I inevitably get handed packet after packet accompanied by the question 'How many calories are in that?' Hmm

eatriskier · 29/09/2013 17:32

brilliant dotty

currently torturing myself with the smell of a ham cooking in coca cola. yummy. nice roast planned for tonight with a small treat for dessert. only about 2 hrs to go eek.

Talkinpeace · 29/09/2013 17:40

eatriskier
ham cooking in coca cola OK, I'd never heard of that. Have just googled. I LOVE this thread. It gives me ideas!

lucyintheskywithdinos · 29/09/2013 19:20

Inadvertent 24hr fast for me! Too busy to eat so just waited. Look out for me in the news coverage of the Tory party conference protests! Knackered now.

Dinner was gorgeous, sesame noodles with loads of broccoli.

DP has annual leave this week from Wednesday. So I'll fast Tuesday and perhaps Friday again I think.

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 29/09/2013 19:23

You can cook chicken in diet cola as well TIP

That's fantastic Dotty - I agree about size 12. I was never comfortable with my body when I was smaller than that and I'm certainly not now I'm bigger.

Zombie you can eat more than one meal on a fd. I have 3 meals totalling 600 calories and I am losing weight. Waiting til teatime is a preference rather than an integral part of 5:2. I eat because I am horrendous to be around if I don't and, since I work with SEND teens, that would be an issue.

Emmabryant123 · 29/09/2013 19:27

Hmm lesson learnt I feel crap this evening ...
One slice white toast with mushrooms and tomatoes for breakfast. Half a banana.
Sag Bol for dinner with white pasta and garlic bread.
And rice pudding for pud.
To many carbs.
Didn't eat massive but its made my tummy feel good.
Defiantly have eggs and sausages for breakfast tomorrow. Lol.

BsshBossh · 29/09/2013 19:35

Hasy thank you for sharing. You are a 5:2 inspiration!
Dotty hurrah for size 12s :)

Roll on NFD Monday. I am so needing looking forward to it.

BsshBossh · 29/09/2013 19:35

FD Monday, I mean.

wrigglebum · 29/09/2013 20:02

Yum, candy floss at the circus and fish and chips after. I was restrained in my portion size though.

Weighed this morning, after breakfast (normally weigh before), and was just under 9 1/2st. I have hit target! I'm also a fairly comfortable size 10 in a lot of shops now. I am the lightest and slimmest I have been since I was 17!

Onto maintenance now I guess, I'm going to focus on staying under or around the 9 1/2st mark but try and build muscle and reduce body fat. Jillian michaels will help with that. I think I'll probably mix it around between 1 proper fast a week and two mini fasts. Then just adjust it as necessary- I like keeping my metabolism on its toes Smile.

I'd already lost a few pounds before starting but (before) and after stats are-

Weight- (10st 10lbs) 9st 7lbs
Bust- (38.5") 36.5"
Waist- (31.5") 29"
Hips- (39.5") 37"

I started at the start of July and I'm just under 5ft6

southeastdweller · 29/09/2013 20:07

Lovely news dotty.

So the start of another exciting work beckons Sad. Posh chocs were divine this morning though and think a trip to one of the Paul A.Young chocolate shops in the week is on the cards, just to get an objective comparison on the ones today of course Grin.

Good luck tomorrow to everyone who's fasting.

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 29/09/2013 20:13

Size 12 is my perfect size too. I look ok in a 10, but when I went from a size 8/10 to 12 in 3 months everyone kept telling me how great I looked. I'm currently a 14.

For tea tonight I had cottage pie with extra lean mince and lots of veg. I had a bit of mash (just the yummy crispy bit at the top). So that's it now till 1 tomorrow. FD for me, looking forward to it too. Who would have thought I'd actually enjoy not eating? Also I've just realised while typing, I've not had a biscuit in a week Grin Now that's a huge achievement for me.

Well done wriggle

Hope your first day went well Zombie

southeastdweller · 29/09/2013 20:31

biscuits You've reminded me I need to keep my hands out of the biscuit tub tomorrow, thanks...one is never enough or even three

You OK zombie?

Sophiste · 29/09/2013 20:59

Congratulations wriggle on reaching target - you're an inspiration (like so many others here).

Scrummy NFD here - for lunch we went to an unassuming but authentic little Italian place which has had rave reviews. I had black truffle & mushroom ravioli - simply sublime. Takes me back to interrailing in Italy as a fresh-faced 17-yr-old! Had a kids' portion as an adult one looked overwhelming - but it left me perfectly satisfied.

Home alone this evening and I had the "chicken tikka with chargrilled vegetables" from M&S' new Modern Indian range. Scrummy and only 290 cals because there's no gloopy sauce with it.

Little dishes of flavour-packed gorgeousness seem to be what does it for me these days. Can't believe the portions I used to get through before 5:2!

peplum41 · 29/09/2013 21:22

Hello

Just catching up , spotted ineedthatforkoffs post about your mum, goodness how shocking for you. Best wishes, and yes I'm sure concentrating on the health benefits will help.

As tip says off loading here rather than on loved ones is not going to do much damage.

dotty great news about the 12s. I feel a bit left behind now, all the people who started at the same time as me are at goal, or nearly at goal. Atleast I'm sticking it out though. Always wonder what happened to saf and acka, among others. Thread seems quieter without them.

hasywell inspiring post, good to hear from you.

peplum41 · 29/09/2013 21:26

Oh and my latest nsv, my arms look less fat and flabby. Last years boots have gaps round my calves. Chin now a double rather than tripple. Wore size 14 skirt today.

Talkinpeace · 29/09/2013 21:30

LOL at Peplum loonies like SAF are still lurking out there and will reappear when you least expect
Size 14 is a leap in the right direction and this is for life not till target weight so its worth it

peplum41 · 29/09/2013 21:32

Oh wrigglebum, I was so distracted by the candyfloss I glossed over your fantastic achievement. How fab, would you have thought you could put candyfloss and chips in the same sentence as size 10th a few months back.

sophiste kids size nice meals, good idea.

zombiesheep · 29/09/2013 22:17

Hey everyone! Today was surprisingly easier than I thought, do need to work on my willpower a little bit though as got very tough at times but yes I think I can do this, it was quite nice to feel hungry for once and not bloated! Think my next FD will be Wednesday.
So tomorrow do I just eat normally? I reckon I will try and eat a bit better than usual as I do eat a lot of crap!
Well done to everyone who has posted their results, you're my inspiration! :o

whimsicalname · 29/09/2013 23:01

Wow, some great results. Well done everyone. We've been at a Fall Festival today and eaten brilliantly or terribly, depending how you see these things, so pulled pork, root beer floats etc. Yum. Weigh in and fd tomorrow.

wrigglebum · 30/09/2013 06:25

Smile peplum- yes, how many other 'diets' let you eat candy floss and chips but still reach target?! I think I'm finally eating like a thin person- I have whatever I fancy but much smaller portions and minimal snacking. Size 14 sounds like a great achievement, I'm still in the healthy bmi range at size 14. Good NSV too.

Zombie- whether or not you eat 'normally' depends on what normal is for you Grin. Try using MFP or similar to track your consumption so you stick roughly to your TDEE. Cutting out snacks, if you can manage it, will help loads with that. Once you're used to fasting it's really easy to just wait until your next meal. I've definitely reduced my white carb consumption too- smaller portions if I do have refined carbs, otherwise more whole grains, lean protein and veg. I do have one posh chocolate every evening after dinner- satisfies my sweet craving very well and I look forward to it every day. Like you say- it's nice not to feel bloated and cutting back a bit really helps with that.

The funny thing is, I tell myself I'll indulge on the weekends a bit more, but I rarely fancy going crazy. This weekend I bought croissants as a weekend treat- before I would've had two, given the kids one each and finished their left overs. This weekend I had just one and the boys shared one each morning and that was enough for us all.

Dotty342kids · 30/09/2013 08:15

Thanks everyone!

wrigglebum that is excellent news, well done! Must feel brilliant to be back to that size / weight again.

peplum please don't feel left behind! I never had a target as such, other than the size 12 thing and my loss has been very slow and steady - 16lbs in 7 months which is way slower than some other folk on here Grin. This is part of my life now so am happy to just go with it and see where it takes me. If I don't lose any more weight but retain the health benefits of fasting then that'll be good enough for me.
I've definitely learnt that three meals a day, especially if more than two of them involve carbs, is too much! And that a couple of periods of letting my body clear itself out, per week, feels good Smile

Happy fasting day everyone!
Cod with red peppers and chickpeas in a tomato sauce, and a small portion of rice for my dinner tonight - 440ish cals and delicious.

lucyintheskywithdinos · 30/09/2013 09:03

Morning everyone! Bit sleep deprived as DD3 was up from 3.30 to 6. NFD here and we have guests arriving this afternoon.

I'm planning on a bike ride with the DDs after breakfast (for them not me!) then baking for tonight's dessert. I fancy ginger cake. Or fruit cake, some kind of dark moist kind of cake anyway.

Happy fasting those who are! Brew black coffee for all!
