The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Was the question whether you should be doing 4:3 MissS? I did it for a couple of weeks but found I'm more focussed on 2 days, 3 felt a bit too tough. Why do you want to do it?

Dotty342kids · 26/09/2013 20:21

Thanks for scales tip BssBossh and well done on just having a couple of spoonfuls!

Preciousdaisybear · 26/09/2013 20:26

Good tip about the tea angie thanks. I have builder's tea with a splash only so milk almost non existent.

On another note: anyone else havibg trouble finding this thread as it doesn't seem to appear on your ' I'm on' list? Probably making some schoolboy error. Ideas?

MissStrawberry · 26/09/2013 20:29

I did 4:3 last week because the FD were becoming a problem for me emotionally. I actually found doing 3 easier Confused. If I do Mon and Wed as FD are they too close together and then 4 days of normal eating too much?

Coveredinweetabix · 26/09/2013 20:41

An NFDS fail yesterday and a FD fail today! Yesterday, I was planning on sticking to my TDEE as I think that is where I'm going wrong but yesterday I had two glasses of champagne, two small slices of cake and then, just as I got back from Zumba, a giant pizza arrived for DP so I had some of that. I hadn't decided when I went to bed last night whether I'd have a FD today or tomorrow but hoped it would be today only to wake up ravenous. I waited an hour, drank loads of water etc and then realised there was no point fasting today as I was a as hungry at 8am as I normally am at 4pm on a FD. I have at least managed to stick to my TDEE and will fast tomorrow.

JB30 · 26/09/2013 20:44

Blush I rarely get snogged - I am married you know! Thank you kindly Wink
I think, over time, like how close/far apart fd's are - it balances out if you get me? Of course if you did fd's 3 days in a row, I reckon that mightn't be the best - if only from the pure misery point of view. I weigh in after second fast day as my official WI but keep track on other days, and thems the days I don't record lol! At this point I'm casually ignoring a gain last week that I'm near positive will be gone tomorrow.
I reckon, after reading so many messages from people doing this over a year, that it probably doesn't matter. Could be wrong, but most seem v successful on 5:2
And seriously MissS how could you not enjoy 5 days of your cooking? I'm often salivating here reading some of your menus! Your weight loss is coming along great as well

whimsicalname · 26/09/2013 20:49

precious did you press hide by accident?

MissStrawberry · 26/09/2013 20:53

I'm married too and haven't had a snog in ages Sad. Kids a nightmare in the evenings and we aren't even kissing goodnight Sad.

I fucked up dinner tonight thanks to the kids kicking off at teatime so was not a good meal tonight. Kids seemed a bit Hmm about their dinner. I told them there was no money for shopping this week and would have to just have what I gave them. Cooked 2 different meals for 3 of them and I just feel I have spoilt them so much that a meal with boodles/cous cous/pasta is a real shock to the system and not as acceptable as their usual stuff. I plan on no food shopping for quite a while until they stop being so bloody ungrateful. My fault I know but you would think after years of amazing meals one which is plainer would not be a problem. They still had a crumble fgs.

MissStrawberry · 26/09/2013 20:55

noodles, not boodles Hmm.

southeastdweller · 26/09/2013 21:07

Two awful NFD's here, grazing on crap almost constantly. No good reason, just pure greed. Didn't even enjoy most of it and been in a foul mood all day and felt lethargic. Doing a mini-fast on Saturday and my usual weekend of cardio and walking planned. It's just a blip but the glimpse into my old self was a little scary.

Good luck to everyone who's fasting tomorrow.

postmanpatscat · 26/09/2013 21:13

southeast that's what I was slipping into so I've reined myself in hard!

somewhere I'm 5ft 4 but very small framed and a size 8 (or 6 in Next!). I was 10st when I started 5:2 back in Feb.

I was on the treadmill earlier and felt my eye twitching...have had this before but have no idea whether it's related to exercise, fasting or just coincidence that someone else posted the same thing!

Pollysbubble · 26/09/2013 21:19

Hi All,
MissS I tend to do my fasts on a Monday and Wednesday and it is working out well so far. My reason being I only work mon tues and weds and find it much easier to fast on my days at work rather than at home with the little one - so have to squeeze my fasts into those 3 days. My reasoning is it is better to have successful fasts, rather than try to space them out more, but not actually be able to do them!

Neeko · 26/09/2013 21:43

Well I've survived my second FD despite icing a birthday cake. I'm hungrier tonight than on Tuesday but just heading to bed and won't be fasting again until Monday. I'm looking forward to weighing myself on Monday morning to see what the weekly weight loss total is Smile.
I have the ww scales too and I think they are fab.
Very impressed by what I've read so far in everyone's cooking. When can I come for tea? Please make it a NFD. Wink

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 26/09/2013 21:52

FD successfully completed :)

DH has fasted too but is like a bear with a sore head. There is something wrong with our IT/computer set up as well which always gives him the rage (he works in IT).
I am giving him a wide berth Grin

Bssh that was my plan too regarding school dinners, but DS1 didn't eat anything at lunchtimes for a week because he found the food 'too weird Mummy and not like yours'. So he has packed lunches :)

MissS what would you normally give them that pasta and couscous are looked down on?

Preciousdaisybear · 26/09/2013 22:15

Good tip about the tea angie thanks. I have builder's tea with a splash only so milk almost non existent.

Preciousdaisybear · 26/09/2013 22:21

Thanks whimsical I think I did. I will see if that sorts it Grin

BsshBossh · 26/09/2013 22:22

MissS hopefully one day when your kids have left home they'll have wonderful food memories... My DH and his siblings were often quite ungrateful over their mum's wonderful homecooking when they were growing up, but as adults they rave about what they used to eat and have grown to be adventurous cooks and foodies. There is hope!

JB30 · 26/09/2013 22:31

Oh MissS every day my kids find ways to moan, food/clothes/activities - it's like having a judging panel/torture experiment on tap 13-14 hours a day. If I'm lucky they wake to top throughout the night to top up on the moaning.
Mine seem to be set to disagreeable mode, wish I knew how to reset them! Feel your pain, wish I had some suggestions. Ooh I know, send the round mine - they'll never complain about your cooking againGrin

lucyintheskywithdinos · 26/09/2013 22:59

Successful NFD today.

Fasting now until 7pm tomorrow. Should be a pretty easy one, I am so beyond busy tomorrow...have to do a day return to London (I'm in the north) to go and protest outside number 10. Watch out for me on the news!

Liquid only fasts - I love the convenience. I drink my coffee black anyway and do like herbal tea. It gives me a lovely break from thinking obsessing about food.

Sophiste · 26/09/2013 23:04

Hi everyone - checking in after a successful FD. It's been a long and hectic day at work, so all my food was shop-bought food - at least it was calorie-counted for me which makes things simple.

Had black coffee this morning. Lunch was Pret's (excellent) chicken and broccoli soup at 133 cals. Early supper at my desk - sushi, 318 cals. Got home at 10.30pm and made up some instant miso soup - 29.5 cals. That's me done.

Another massive work day tomorrow and then I have fingers crossed for some good news on the scales on Saturday. I have had no loss in September (my 2nd month) at all! I know I said I wouldn't get hung up on weight loss, but still.

Also - TMI - but TOTM has gone AWOL. Usually clockwork but 4 days late and definitely no mini-Sophistes on the way. Is this to be expected while adjusting to 5:2?

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 26/09/2013 23:52

Bad NFD involving a deep-fried cheeseburger and a packet of cookies. Didn't even want the cookies I wanted to be miraculously slim and stylish.

thinkcan · 27/09/2013 01:56

Finally, after weeks of despair, during which I was sorely tempted to look for alternative diet plans, the holiday and house guests related weight gain is gone. I am now half a lb less than my previous lowest weight recorded 3 months ago. Also, very gratifying to note that my whole relationship with food has changed. I spent yesterday making sesame seed bars and hosted a dinner for 3 girlfriends and still managed to stick to my FD. I have also learned that I do not need to put out a calorific meal when cooking for girlfriends. The last two times I have had girlfriends over, the salad based meals and fruit based desserts I put together have been most appreciated. Everyone ate without guilt and no sinful leftovers for me to deal with the following days.

wildwater · 27/09/2013 02:10

Where exactly do I go to find out about the famous 'shred'?

whimsicalname · 27/09/2013 03:39

Google Jillian Michaels ww. There's a series of DVDs and she has a website etc. I believe there's also some stuff on you tube, but I bought the shred (and subsequently Ripped in 30 because I am a masochist) from the super market in the US for not much more than $5.

I completely hit a wall earlier. After very bad sleep for a week, a poorly baby who has been feeding continuously all day, shredding and walking 4miles I fell asleep in bed for literally the whom evening, and now my husband is cross with me (in a nice way) for over doing it. Still, live and learn. Next time I'm this tired I might have to be more kind to myself!

headintheclouds · 27/09/2013 07:16

morning all . WI today and I'm 10st 1. I've definitely hit the dreaded plateau...Been back from my summer hols for 4 weeks and I'm bouncing up and down between 10 st4 and 10 st. I 'glimpsed' 9 13 6 weeks ago.
Still doing 5:2 , 1580 TDEE and gym x2 week. (49 yrs , 5 ft 3)
Any advice from bssh or anyone else who had a sustained plateau?
Or from postman ,eatriskier who seem to have lost ALOT of weight in less time?Envy
I'm still religiously putting everything into MFP.
My weight loss has always been slow to go...doing this since Jan and it's taken that long to lose 16 lbs.
