Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Should be fasting today but have a cold and had to park at Ikea for a meeting and the pickled herring beckoned ....
Will do 300 cal supper though and all will be well.

Dotty342kids · 26/09/2013 14:21

Struggling with the cold today. Really want something large and stodgy for my dinner but it's a fast day and I'm trying a new fish pie recipe which comes in at 520 cals so not even room for a heap of veg. Am feeling grumpy and deprived Grin so will def need to head for a hot bath as distraction technique afterwards!

Shybairns · 26/09/2013 14:27

Can anyone confirm or deny that 2 medium eggs equates to 250cals?

whimsicalname · 26/09/2013 14:27

Fd for me today, but have had a week of terrible nights so not sure how well I'll cope. Going to the gym in a bit so will have a protein shake after that. Miso soup for lunch and prawn stir fry for tea. Then, if the baby let's me, an early night. Disappointed to be 5 hours behind you all so as you've got through lunch, i'm still only just past breakfast!

whimsicalname · 26/09/2013 14:31

More like 150 shy.

MrsFlorrick · 26/09/2013 14:32

Shy. I think a medium egg (if poached or boiled not fried) is 80cals. So two would be 160. 250 is probably for fried in oil/butter.

Those brave souls who are doing liquids only on a fast. Do you allow yourself cup a soup? I am interested in progressing and I could probably manage if cup a soup was involved Grin

Cat98 · 26/09/2013 14:55

good luck eveyone.
fasting today, I am hungry! Busy afternoon coming up though and I'm looking forward to my tea (2 quorn sausages, 1 small yorkshire pudding, broccoli, green beans and gravy!)

preciousdaisybear good luck with the rest of the fd, sounds like you're doing great! And the 10k walk, wow.

MelanieCheeks · 26/09/2013 15:29

Small egg - 60, medium egg - 70, large egg- 80 or 90.

If you fry them, add the oil calories.
If you scramble them, add milk/ butter etc.
On toast - add the calories for the bread and spread

postmanpatscat · 26/09/2013 15:52

MrsF I can't bear cupasoup! No, only water or peppermint tea for me. I do it about once a fortnight, but it really is completely unnecessary and there is no reason to move away from 500 cals. It's not a competition!

The advantages for me are:
Lots of free time gained by not preparing meals, eating and clearing up
The hunger monster stays dormant rather than being awakened by the first sniff of food
The weight I lose seems to stay away longer than after a 500 cal fast (though I am actually maintaining now)

cat98 I like the sound of your dinner - I love quorn sausages, mash, gravy and veg!

somewherebecomingrain · 26/09/2013 15:58

Starved and yet not starved. It's been a v unproductive day, a slight feeling of panic. Couldn't bring myself to do more than the sahm (as I am currently) essentials. So no to do list ticks, though I have made fish fingers for the baby.

But knew I wouldn't eat so it was sort of irrelevant.

Had three milky coffee at 50 cals each.

Now 475 cals of Tarka dal. So 625.

God looking forward to tomorrow and also getting to my target when I can be less disciplined.

I've just decided on my target and its 10.5, the weight I was when I was at my fittest when I was 24 and cycled everywhere.

mrsS your slow cooker recipe sounds fab.

whimsical you can do it! It is hard but it is a buzz and its an achievement. And tomorrow the rewards are great - enjoy being slimmer, eat what you want!

somewherebecomingrain · 26/09/2013 15:59

Oh yes tried the shred today. Oof it was hard. Baby interrupted me .

BsshBossh · 26/09/2013 16:23

Lots of colds going around on this thread. Honey, lemon and a dash of turmeric mixed together taken several times a day really helps me (and the 5 year old).

FD for me too. Have kept really busy - work, gym, choir - so the day is rushing by without me being able to think much about food. Have had a milk coffee and a few grapes though so not a pure fast, unfortunately. Dal and rice for dinner tonight and a 10 cal jelly.

I'm usually fine preparing DD's dinners on FDs but today I am trying a new recipe on her (brown rice salad with pancetta, borlotti beans, sage leaves, garlic, pecans and figs plus dressing) and I know I will be sorely tempted. Must remember the mantra - "I can have it tomorrow!"

whimsicalname · 26/09/2013 16:48

Thanks somewhere, that just really cheered me up! I too just shredded with a 3yo joining in then the baby woke up. Looks like he's ill, so no gym for me (hence the shred). My protein shake was the most delicious thing I ever had! Normally I just glug it down in the car, but today it felt like a meal.

NotAsTired · 26/09/2013 17:10

bssh I would eat what you made for your DD. Sounds yummy! And I too live by the impressive healing properties of turmeric.

somewhere hope things are going ok in your world? It is okay to just be and not have to do lists. Take care of yourself. Smile

Welcome back, ELR. Postmanpats. How do you stop yourself from losing weight when you exercise so much and do zero/liquid fasts?

Another FD here. Just broke fast with chicken & veg soup. Will be eating more chicken later - chicken fajita with some veg.

I went to the Michelin starred restaurant yesterday. Was simply divine. Just the right portions, so I did not overstuff myself. Grin. The highlights included a tapenade bread (looked like a cinnamon roll], the sea bass cooked to perfection and a chocolate sphere that was hard until they poured a hot raspberry sauce over it and it all collapsed to reveal chocolate sauce, ice cream and fresh raspberries inside. Hope I did not make anyone too hungry .

postmanpatscat · 26/09/2013 17:16

Ooh tired that sounds fab!

I did go under 8st by the merest whisper, but am hovering around 8st 2 or 3 most of the time. I eat whatever I like on NFDs and that seems to do the trick. I've fasted twice this week, but not at all in the two weeks before last Sunday - it depends what is happening on the scales!

somewherebecomingrain · 26/09/2013 17:42

How tall are you postman? Are u really skinny?

Yes notastired that was most unhelpful! Grin Wowee that choc desert ....

JB30 · 26/09/2013 18:14

Drool NotAsTired - that dessert sounds divine!!
This week is going to be 16:8 mini fasts, can't quite manage a 500. Next week I'll hit it, no excuses. Much better today, hoping to get back to exercise over the weekend.
Nearly Friday, bought yummy steaks for dinner tomorrow, couple with a nice Shiraz, I can't wait! Maybe a little something chocolatey for dessert... Rolling Friday!

JB30 · 26/09/2013 18:14

Or even roll on Friday - stoooopid phone!!!

Preciousdaisybear · 26/09/2013 18:28

Well, that's dinner over on first FD. Stirfry with a poached egg. Sounds weird but actually tasted ok. Have managed today (only 18 kcal over) but finding restricting the tea I drink hard as lurve my cuppas. Probably off to an early bed as very busy day with sponsored walk tomorrow.

Dotty342kids · 26/09/2013 18:32

Oh goodness notastired, are you trying to kill us?

So I have just wolfed down the rosti fish pie in the fastest time ever after whinging and whining (to myself mostly!) about being cold and tired all day today Smile. Thankfully it was actually quite nice though I'm sure the large helping of peas I had it with tipped me over my 500 cals. Never mind eh?
I feel nicely full now so before my mind and hand start wandering towards evening snacks I am going to take myself off for a bubble bath with my book whilst children brush teeth / argue / put themselves to bed Grin
BsshBossh that is an amazing dish to feed a five year old - I'm in awe of your cooking talents / her openness to eating such foods!
I think my scales are knackered. I can weigh anywhere between 10st 5 and 10st 8, all within the same five minutes, at the moment. It's driving me slightly mad.
Anyone got any recommendations for affordable, reliable scales please?

AngieM2 · 26/09/2013 18:40

precious I drink unlimited tea on FD's. Usually about 5 cups. I have skimmed milk (a splash each time). Dont bother counting it as 100mls is only 35 cals.

MissStrawberry · 26/09/2013 19:14

You with all your fancy restaurants, soup and cold talk have missed my question. Grin

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 26/09/2013 19:35

Tomorrow was supposed to be a fast day. I was going to go to work, get home for 6 as usual then straight back out to the supermarket. Meanwhile DH was going to feed the DCs, but he has just informed me that there is nothing in for them so we will have to go out for tea Angry so should I fast from now until then (if I can manage that in my first week), stick to 200 cals while at work (easy now) or just say to not bother at all. I've lost a couple of pound this week and I know what I want to do, but think I should choose option sticking to under 200 cals. I just want to eat crap maybe I'm just tired after the week.

BsshBossh · 26/09/2013 19:46

FD over, but I admit I caved in making DD her borlotti bean and pancetta rice salad - I only had a couple of spoonfuls though (it was delicious and a big hit with DD - she wants me to reprise it tomorrow for a playdate and I will be able to wolf down a whole bowl of my own!). DD used to be a fussy eater but since turning 5 and eating cooked school dinners she's become an adventurous eater (the main reason I started her on school dinners and not packed lunches - my plan worked!).

Okay, off to heat up my dal and rice. I'm not actually physically hungry for dinner to be honest and could easily skip it, but mentally I want it! Next week I might go with the flow and do one liquid fast...

3 NFDs to come - yippee!

NotAsTired that birthday meal sounds yum.
Dotty I use a £24 WW digital one from Tesco. Works great - always consistent - and tallies with the industrial non-digital scales at my gym.
ELR welcome back.
precious good luck on the 10k.

BsshBossh · 26/09/2013 19:47

Biscuits you've already lost 2lbs this week; I think you're done. Enjoy!
