Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 27 - Season of fasts and mellow rumblingness (with apologies to Keats)

BetsyBell · 19/09/2013 16:58

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

I'm wheat intolerant and vegan, which I should have mentioned.

Lucy, I'm also a vegan, and I have several gluten free, vegan recipes on my blog - socca (gram flour pancakes), pancakes made with Doves GF flour, chocolate cakes, etc. Plus this thread contains many useful links.

Hi Precious! Glad to see you made it at last! Smile

You'll be fine, tomorrow! Don't be too hard on yourself, if you feel you need to have something, have a cup of bouillon or similar. But don't worry if you go over 500 cals the first time - fasting does get easier, and this is a marathon, not a sprint! Grin

Good luck!

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 26/09/2013 01:19

ElBombero three weeks seems very early to fast if you are EBF?

I am feeding my toddler and I allow 650-700 on a fast day - my body has been BF for over five years almost continuously so my supply is very settled.

I can absolutely understand your need to get rid of the weight, but your uterus has possibly not even shrunk all the way back. Please be careful.

I'm sorry if that comes over as a lecture, it isn't meant to, but a post-partum body doesn't function in a 'normal' way and I'm a bit worried about you.

ElBombero · 26/09/2013 02:27

Ok guys points taken on board. Ill wait abit hopefully in the next month or so things will have settled n won't find fasting so hard

whimsicalname · 26/09/2013 03:45

Good stuff EB. I'm sure you'll find some will shift in the next few weeks anyway. Enjoy your baby!

Salbertina · 26/09/2013 07:17

Morning, clocking in for fast day. Anyone else?

eatriskier · 26/09/2013 07:28

elbomb I have to admire your dedication. at 3w post partum I could only just think about getting out of bed let alone dieting! please come back though if you still feel ready in a few weeks. were a nice bunch.

salb I'm fasting today too though I'm completely expecting it to be as fail. aunt flo showed up just 2 weeks after the last and having the BASTARD reinstalled so I may just shove my head in a ton of food. I will skip brekkie at least.

Neeko · 26/09/2013 07:41

Hi. I'm fasting today too. Second ever for me. My stomach already feels much less bloated after Tuesday's fast and I was surprised that I wasn't ravenous yesterday.
It's my dd1's birthday tomorrow so I'll look forward to a slice of cake then if things are tough today.
I LOVE my slow cooker and use it at least twice a week. There's nothing better than the smell of a home-cooked meal as you walk on the door after a hard day. Smile

postmanpatscat · 26/09/2013 08:11

Fast day for me too. I took a break after my holiday in August as I hadn't gained but I have been eating a fair amount of crap this week so I'm enjoying being back in the fasting groove! I did a zero fast on Sunday so I'm counting that as last week. Tues and Thurs this week, simply because DP is away and that's the easiest time. Have left my meagre lunch in the fridge at home so I may just have to last until dinner whether I want to or not!

Good luck fellow fasters :)

BetsyBell · 26/09/2013 08:16

Pondering on the merits of fasting with a hangover and a cold (silly Betsy!)

I kind of already failed as I found myself scoffing crap chocolate from the cupboard at 11.30 last night...

lucyintheskywithdinos · 26/09/2013 09:12

elbombero I'm fasting and breast feeding! I do 24hr liquid only fasts without noticing a difference.

Huge loss for me, 9lbs in three weeks! (I don't weigh myself very often because I obsess otherwise) No idea quite how it has gone so fast, I feel amazing though, and this puts my BMI down into 'overweight'. I was rapidly closing on morbidly obese when I started this!

NFD for me today and taking the DD's for a long walk in the park this afternoon...going to clean the fridge this morning. I can't believe how much energy I have since starting this woe!

lucyintheskywithdinos · 26/09/2013 09:15

Oops, forgot to say breadandwine thank you!

BetsyBell · 26/09/2013 09:30

I'm not fasting today. Tomorrow.

janey1234 · 26/09/2013 09:48

Lucy - liquid only fasts? Tell me more!

9lbs is amazing - well done Smile

I read this week that when you're breastfeeding a 3-6 month old baby that's when you enter the fat burning phase. DS is 3 months at the weekend so fingers crossed that's true...

ELR · 26/09/2013 09:54

Morning all, marking place and checking back in!
Big wave to all my old 5:2 buddies.......
So haven't really fasted much after my holiday in August just a few random low calorie days and at least one 16:8 a week. But weight is kind of keeping back up hovering around 10/3. 10/4 instead of 10 and 10/2 we are currently well just started trying for a baby (no3) so was using that as an excuse to not fast, but I know that's just an excuse so here I am back to 5:2. Managed a fast on Monday about 750 calories and I'm fasting today but will aim for lower calories today.
Great to see so many new people and all the old timers!
betsy out of interest what do you weigh now? You were always just a few pounds lighter than me and I was always chasing your weight as my target for the next week!

frenchfancy · 26/09/2013 10:19

Well for only about the 3rd time in a year of fasting I've failed today. I feel like crap. I think I've got a cold or flu coming on and i can hardly keep my eyes open. Got to 11 o'clock and it was a choice of either going back to bed or eating something. I have work to do so food won.

somewherebecomingrain · 26/09/2013 10:44

Morning all.

Yesterday I had a really successful NFD. I did 16:8. This involved a huge lunch at 12pm and a huge dinner at 6pm but that is all. No snacks. Less than TDEE. And no hunger whatsoever except in the morning but managed it with milky coffee and knew it would make lunch amazing, which it was.

Fasting today and I anticipate it will be tough because I didn't stuff myself
As I usually do on NFD.

I have been plateauing and clearly am entering that phase tip is always reiterating, when you really can't ignore your TDEE any more.

At the beginning I'd make a cake and eat half of it and still lose but now I can't.

Anyway I seem to have consolidated at 11.4 - had been plateauing between 11.5 and 11.7.

I don't totally trust it but we will see.

Now I've turned my eyes to the tens!

I do feel a bit starved today so shall be on here looking for inspiration!

somewherebecomingrain · 26/09/2013 10:46

betsey postmanpat neeko eatriskier salbertina we can do it! I hope!

somewherebecomingrain · 26/09/2013 10:49

rlbombero 3 weeks sounds a bit early. Could you ease in? I ebf'd my nearly 6mo -now weaning - and started at 6 weeks I think. I agree no effect on milk supply. I allowed myself 750 a day at first but it's gradually dropped as I've lost weight - 650 is about average for my fd.

Dotty342kids · 26/09/2013 10:58

Hey there ELR, welcome back! Ooh, and lovely news about trying for baby no 3!

lucyintheskywithdinos · 26/09/2013 11:50

jayney my woe looks like this...

2 clear liquid (ie no milky tea!) fast days a week, usually 6pm-6pm.

On the other days I eat as much lunch and dinner as I need, sometimes with pudding at dinner and nothing else.

Off to have my lunch now...lentil soup and rye bread. Yum. I jammed it full of parsley.

eatriskier · 26/09/2013 12:27

OK. no brekkie turned into a fry up at tesco. so, um, definitely not fasting today. I do feel a lot better though and didn't kill the cat when we discovered it has its own pet mouse in our under stairs cupboard. ffs. Angry

postmanpatscat · 26/09/2013 12:40

Oh dear eatriskier

somewhere you sound very focussed!

My tummy has been gurgling and rumbling like mad this morning, despite last night's substantial dinner. Lots of croissants and pastries suddenly appeared in the staffroom left over from a breakfast meeting, I hardened my resolve and ate a few grapes and berries instead. Third cup of peppermint tea now and things have quietened down a bit!

jayney me and B&W take it a bit further - liquids only between finishing dinner on day 1 until eating breakfast on day 3, with no food at all on day 2.

MissStrawberry · 26/09/2013 13:29

Phew. Finally a sit down. Have been flying around crazily busy today and was hungry when I got in as I had only had a piece of toast while helping DS do his maths this morning. I got in and only did about 3 things before I made myself sit down and eat instead and doing all the jobs and then wondering why I wasn't hungry any more or had no time left to eat. I have had ice berg lettuce, tinned anchovies, olives, a bit of stilton, some dressing and some beetroot and mint dip. Feel as full as if I had had a main meal but not as in eaten too much.

I am finding 4:3 works best for me at the moment. Not sure if it is okay to be doing that already though.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 26/09/2013 13:29

Yesterday went a bit pear shaped again! I was doing fine until DH came home and announced that he had got the fabulous new job he was waiting to hear on - and that he was no longer fasting because a client had taken him out for lunch and he hadn't worked out how to refuse politely.

But when I add up what I had, it was around 500-600 under TDEE, and I fasted for 18 hours so actually not too awful.

So today I really am fasting! Grin

It is bizarre though - even though the scales are fairly stationary I'm losing fat from around my middle and off my face. Belt is on a tighter notch and there is less muffin/back fat in evidence.

postman that is very focused indeed! Not sure I could contemplate that!

Preciousdaisybear · 26/09/2013 13:35

Halfway through first FD. Had tiny bit of chicken breast for breakfast, a carrot and some cherry tomatoes for lunch. Looking forward to stirfry for tea. So far, so good. Must have big breakfast tomorrow as doing 10 k sponsored walk with school!
