The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Great news Alibabaa. Flowers

JB30 · 25/09/2013 17:08

Having another mini fast today, catch up with myself as I seem to be up nearly 2 pound over the last 2 weeks. Doing it in combo with a 16:8 today, not too difficult so far, but its early yet! Back to work tomorrow as I'm feeling better, can't stick the house anymore...what a dumpGrin
Checking in on email, trying not to let the stress creep in but it's hard. Up side will be I'll be so busy I'll have no time to comfort eatSmile

JB30 · 25/09/2013 17:09

Oooh MissS bought a slow cooker, hasn't made it out of the box yet - dying to try it!

JB30 · 25/09/2013 17:11

I meant to say I bought a slow cooker, you obviously know you bought one at some stage Blush

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 25/09/2013 17:55

Lol JB30! How are you feeling now?

NFD today - what I love is:
Because my attitude to food has changed, breakfast and lunch came to 500 calories compared with about 1000
Which meant that I could have pizza chips and mayo for tea and still come in below tdee Grin

siblingrevelry · 25/09/2013 18:20

On my 6th fast day, counted 'start' as 10pm last night, so nothing but black coffee/water until 2pm (so 16 hrs fasting), having mushroom stroganoff & brown rice at about 7 (342 cals), then 40 cal hot choc sachet before bed.

Have found fast days more than manageable, and although if I'm honest I over-ate on nfd's (lifetime history of being either off or on a 'diet'-old habits die hard!), I think I'm Starting to get it under control.

Almost sabotaged myself today though, decided to make chicken stew & dumplings for the kids today. The smell drive me wild all day, and it looked so good!

MissStrawberry · 25/09/2013 18:42

Lol JB. If you want any recipes I have three books I can make suggestions from. I do puddings in the SC too.

Glad to get another FD done and looking forward to dinner once all homework is done.

JB30 · 25/09/2013 19:02

Brains isn't 100% Helles obviously but the body is getting there - thanks for asking, you feeling better yourself?
I've come to the conclusion I need to get up and get out. The really sore throat has subsided but still sore of chest. I'll be grand in another few day, I reckon getting out to work will bring me on, strange as it sounds.
Ooh desserts/puddings MissS, I'm looking at it out of the corner of my eye pondering...I'm shocking at cooking normal/decent food, you know when people have big parties and they're like, 'oh I'll just make a curry or a stroganoff' I'm the type that has to make it for 4 people and then repeat process again and again until I have enough! It's like I misses that part of life skills, couldn't cook a stew to save my life - and yet sooooo want food like that. I dream of succulent stews, aromatic curries.... meat disintegrating as my fork hits it. Dipping crusty bread into a Marcos Pierre Whote style bolognese (30 day old beef? How about mince frozen 3 months ago with Aldi sauce anyone???)
On second thoughts, maybe I should being it back! I have a feeling I'll be found face down in a vat/sc of chicken curry!

Doitnow · 25/09/2013 19:40

Hello!
Managed another fast day today. Not had anything except coffee and water. Just trying to decide what to have. I really fancy some cereal but know that will just make me hungrier. Perhaps eggs on toast. My shopping isn't coming til later so my cupboards are bare.

I seem to be having a weird side effect too - one of my eyes throbs and goes a bit twitchy on a FD. Anyone got any ideas about why?

JB30 · 25/09/2013 20:02

Omelette maybe? If you haven't eaten then you can afford the toast! Cereal might be too sugary.
Sorry no idea on the twitchy eye - although you mightn't want to tell people you're fasting while its like that, I can just hear the chatter, "you wouldn't believe Doitnow, she was so hungry on that 5:2 rubbish she's twitching!" Grin

lucyintheskywithdinos · 25/09/2013 20:04

NFD today for me. Lots of hummus with olives and veggies for lunch, then rice, puy lentils and roasted parsnips for dinner. Parsnips are my favourite!

I'm wheat intolerant and vegan, which I should have mentioned.

Helles I'm amazed at the change in my attitude to food too! Especially by how much my portion control has improved.

MissStrawberry · 25/09/2013 21:04

JB30 I didn't follow a recipe or weigh a thing for tonight's dinner.

Melted some butter with some oil and fried the chicken drumsticks and thighs for a bit, Put in slow cooker. Added 2 sliced red onions,(fried in left over butter/oil), 3 or 4 quartered tomatoes, sliced large mushrooms,(fried in left over butter/oil which I then added to SC), a bag of pre-chopped carrot and swede, black pepper and then I added stick and turned it on and left it to cook. Stirred it twice and that was that. Served with rice for the kids, DH and I just had it as it was.

I am a really good cook and come up with all sorts but I didn't used to be. I had the children and was fussy obsessed with them eating well and put in many hours to give them a huge variety of food. I often follow a recipe and then when I make it again add or leave out things to make it better.

MissStrawberry · 25/09/2013 21:06

My only issue with FD is I am shattered and feel spaced out as no food and today my eye has been twitching but I out that down to having to read heavy stuff for 6 hours and being tired.

JB30 · 25/09/2013 21:13

Sounds great MissS - years of being scared senseless of butter and oil from ww/sw makes me nervous of using them - although I do know when I have to use the in a recipe, by the time the amount used is split across 4-6 portions, it's no biggie. (Spray oil just doesn't cut it in real food does it?)
Except for Rocky Road, that breaks all the rulesGrin I actually started to get scared as the numbers added up!

wrigglebum · 25/09/2013 21:16

I can't bloody stop eating again today. Made gingerbread men with ds2 and ate too much uncooked dough, then couldn't stop scoffing at lunch and felt bloated and crap all afternoon. Left the carb out of my evening meal to try and offset it all a tiny bit. I want to fast tomorrow now as I feel I need it to stop me spiralling out of control!

Doitnow · 25/09/2013 21:21

Strange thing is, I feel great on FDs. Rarely hungry and full of energy. Just this random eye thing.

I had eggs on toast but think bread might've been a mistake as I'm really fancying something else now. Will pick on tomatoes and cucumber while I make the girls lunches for tomorrow and have a cup of decaf.

At least I can eat what I want, within reason, tomorrow.

Early to bed too.

MissStrawberry · 25/09/2013 21:29

You two have what DH and I call the munchies. We didn't feel hungry but fancied some crisps (this is pre 5:2) and we would have a few and then end up eating too many and then something else and then something else as well sometimes. I would argue the sugar in the Gingerbread is the reason and bread is a bugger for setting off the munchies.

ElBombero · 25/09/2013 22:17

Hi guys, hope you don't mind me plodding along with you!

I'm 3 week post baby boy tomorrow and EBF.

First fast on Monday went great, felt fine (but think this might be because I had a huge Indian on Sunday eve) today has been hard, I'm starved!! Got to 689 calories today, not due to food but coffee with milk only 4 cups but milk added up...

Bring on tomorrow, need FOOD!

JB30 · 25/09/2013 22:27

Congrats on the baby Elbom, would you not give yourself another few weeks to recover from the birth, make sure your supply is well established? I know there are bf mums on board but I think they might be a few months after the birth?
Anyone else know??? I just remember my first few weeks after baby and bf'ing - I couldn't have cut back/out food and didn't need to, the bf did its own work on the post baby body. Apologies if I sound a bit preachey Sad

Salbertina · 25/09/2013 22:31

Congratulations! Sure bfing been discussed before as exclusive bfing burns about 500 cals so doubt you're meant only to be having 500cals.. Or to be fasting at all! Pls check, you might just conk out!

janey1234 · 25/09/2013 22:44

I started fasting this week - currently bf my 12 week old DS. Personally I couldn't and wouldn't have started much earlier as someone told me you should eat lots in the first week to establish supply. But I have been advised on here to allow 750cals on FD, which I've been doing...

janey1234 · 25/09/2013 22:45

By first week I meant first six weeks Confused

ElBombero · 25/09/2013 22:58

Thanks everyone, know there are BFing mums out there doing this but struggling to find them. Read lots of referencing to them on main threads but (if only) I don't have time to read through the past 26!

I know it's early but just feel really intolerant of all this extra weight. Not being finicky but I put on 4 stone with this pregnancy!! And only a stone come off after birth. I'm gonna have a good break inbetween FD n really think about nutritional value of foods on feed days.

Preciousdaisybear · 25/09/2013 23:31

Hello everyone. It's good to find this new thread. Thanks Breadandwine! Starting first fd tomorrow and a little apprehensive about it.

whimsicalname · 25/09/2013 23:32

EB, I'm a BFing mum, currently on week 2 of 5:2, and my baby is 8m! I would have started earlier, but my other 3 had 3 months off for summer (in the US) and I knew it would take all my will power just to get through the day, let alone not eat.

I too put on 4 stone with each pregnancy, and have lost it all again in a 10m on 10m off policy.

I don't want to interfere, because obviously it's up to you, but I would really consider letting your body work its own magic for a few more weeks. It's got an awful lot of recovery to do as well as making lots of lovely milk. I know I'm not the first mum to get through whole malt loaves and the like while feeding, and still (albeit slowly) loosing weight. I found I lost about a stone giving birth, then another one over the first 6 weeks despite eating a lot. The next stone comes off with dieting (ish) and exercising more around 4-6m with a final push at 8m to firm up.

Lecture over. As you were.
