Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Wow, lots of newcomers (well, not newcomers to 5:2, but to the thread). Welcome :)

JB30 · 24/09/2013 20:12

Had a pretty successful mini fast style day, since nothing made me feel good, decided self medicating with food was pointless, yesterday's munching proved that!
Really great to see so many joining in, had to laugh at magazine piece about different diets, saying 5:2 is too hard - best/easiest WL plan I've ever done! If nothing else, the fact I can accept hunger and get on with it, that's massive for me. Another wish for a decent sleep, surely after 5 bad nights a good one is due?!?!?

eatriskier · 24/09/2013 20:18

Conversations you never thought you'd have with yourself before starting this woe:
-no, you cannot have another ale. I don't care if you want it. You've had a chocolate bar, a slice of birthday cake and have one on the go already. You are not allowed all the treats.

Old me would have stuffed the lot and more.

eatriskier · 24/09/2013 20:19

Oh and welcome thread newcomers, well done losers and nsvers.

MissStrawberry · 24/09/2013 20:51

Just sat down to enjoy the last chocolate chip muffin as kids had eaten all the others and took my first bite.

It was an olive one!

Very nice all the same though. I am good. Grin

Neeko · 24/09/2013 21:05

Well I've survived my first FD. I'm hungry but there's something pleasing about it, like I've achieved something. Smile
Made a rookie error by being lazy and buying my roasted veg all cut up. It was only as I was eating that it twigged I'd "wasted" over 100 calories (more than a fifth of the total Shock) on oil included in the veggies! Won't be making that mistake again. Will be cutting my own veggies from now on...
Whoever said the kids tea would be ok was right. Who knew I had such steely determination?
I survived a Tesco shop today too tho there may be a wee nice something in the cupboard for tomorrow.
Heading for an early night. Thanks for all the support and tips today. Bizarrely quite looking forward to my next FD on Thursday.

postmanpatscat · 24/09/2013 21:43

Well done polly on your loss and neeko on your fast.

I had about 450 in total today and haven't struggled at all. I love 5:2!

southeastdweller · 24/09/2013 21:49

FD over now and it's been one of my easiest in the eight months I've been doing this, I think because I was busy at work and slept OK for a change. Had nothing until lunch when I had my usual coffee with skimmed milk and skinny salt and sweet popcorn (all 180 cals). Kept my hands out of the biscuit tub that sits five feet behind me but one of the contractors brought in some sweets so I had three of them (about 70 cals in total). Veg, chilli seeds and sardines for dinner.

Good luck and welcome to the newbies. I've been maintaining with very little effort for two months and feel reinvented, as well as having a much healthier relationship with food. This WOL is truly life-changing in several ways. I thought I was doomed to be fat but I know now that none of us are. You can all do this Smile.

Shanster · 25/09/2013 02:30

Sorry I mostly lurk on here - I have been fasting for about 2 months and have lost about 8lbs in total to the magic under 9st point, and recruited my husband to join in too. I really find fasting quite easy now, and like how it has changed the way I think about food/hunger. But I have one really odd side effect which makes it harder - the evening after my fast days, it takes me forever to get to sleep, and then I have really bad nightmares. This has been a consistent problem for me - does anyone else experience this, and if so, any suggestions on what I could do about it? I normally have a coffee in the morning, soup for lunch and about 300 calories worth of salad or stir fry veg for dinner. Any tips would be appreciated!!!!

postmanpatscat · 25/09/2013 07:38

Welcome shanster no advice I'm afraid but well done on your loss.

I'm 600g lighter after yesterday's fast and 1kg lighter than Sunday morning. If I keep away from the biscuit tin I might stay there!

eatriskier · 25/09/2013 07:49

morning all

well done neeko and ppc

sorry shanster, no real advice here. I do sometimes struggle with sleep but haven't noticed an increase in nightmares from normal. you don't have a lot of cheese on an FD do you?

well not a fast day for me any more. dh is ill and busy so yes decided not to fast again this week. I'm going to fast tomorrow as usual. seems a good choice. I'm so hungry today the cat is likely to be deep fat fried again if I catch her Wink

BetsyBell · 25/09/2013 08:06

Shanster I slept/dreamt very strangely at first on the WOE but only for a few months. Sorry can't remember how long but maybe 3 or 4 months? I haven't really changed how I do it - same as you in fact - so I guess it just takes time for your body to completely normalise to the twice-week fasting.

Only suggestion I can make is perhaps to up your exercise levels on a fast day so that you're physically exhausted.

Well done on 2 months successful fasting and weightloss, I hope it's been worth the nightmares:)

Morning all, sorry I haven't been keeping up with the thread so much lately. I've succumbed to a threatened cold and am well grumpy!

janey1234 · 25/09/2013 08:10

Second ever fast day for me here. Feeling ok about it really, enjoyed my 'normal' eating yesterday and know I can do it again tomorrow.

Couldn't help but weigh myself this morning, and I'm oddly 3lb lighter than on Sunday. This can't be right so am going to stay away from the scales until Sunday to get a weekly figure!

Dotty342kids · 25/09/2013 08:22

Well my fast day ended on a caramel ice cream binge somehow - that wasn't in the plan at all Sad
Some fast days I'm fine until the dreaded evening snack zone. I really have to go back to the distraction techniques of doing an at home pedicure / bubble bath / early night with a book, I think!
Anyway, scales are showing that back down to 10st 5 this morning so presuming last night's cals will catch me later in the week somehow.
Just had a banana and low fat yog for my breakfast which I really enjoy so feeling good about that.
Good luck any fasters today and I'll check in later

MrsFlorrick · 25/09/2013 08:28

Morning!!

Fast day yesterday. Went ok. Ended up over 600 but not upset as I last fasted Sunday and managed to come in just under 500.

Still doing my Jillian Michaels 6 week 6 pack. It's making a difference.

Weight is inching down but very very veerry slowly. I am 165lbs. That leaves me with exactly 13lbs to go Grin. That's for 21 BMI (I am just over 5'10").

The last 1.5stone is feeling so slow but I need to keep remembering that two years ago after DS was born I was 220lbs. And sadly this time least year I was down to 170lbs but ended up over eating biscuits and putting on20lbs by Christmas. HmmConfused

Weight lost by various diets along the way but nothing seemed to make a dent into the last 1.5stone until I tried IF/5:2

So I am really really close. 13lbs. Ideally I would like a big whoosh loss to motivate me right now but not realistic.

Good luck to fasters today. Smile

Salbertina · 25/09/2013 08:57

Well done, Mrs!

Wondering whether to fast today after mon, will decide soon. Just had coffee & little cream. If not tomorrow.

MissStrawberry · 25/09/2013 09:45

FD today. Really wound up today so not sure if that is good or not in terms of not eating until dinner tonight. I can't face the thought of eating though so must be good Confused but tbh pre 5:2 I would be mainlining toast and chocolate by now to try and make me feel better.

GreenEggsAndNichts · 25/09/2013 11:01

Hello everyone :) Just back in the UK now after almost a month back home in the US. I've been greeted by a house that looks like a bomb went off in it, but that's fine. I had a great trip, but I also had a lot of great food, and it was the first time in a year I didn't 5:2. I intend to get back into it, if only to lose whatever I've gained on that trip (I haven't dared to weigh myself yet!) Tomorrow will be my first fast day since before I left.

Good to see so many new faces around. :)

Dotty342kids · 25/09/2013 11:11

Hey, welcome back greeneggs! Super impressed that you're getting straight back onto the fasting habits again. And no, best not get on the scales quite yet Grin

BsshBossh · 25/09/2013 11:21

Welcome back GreenEggs!

Talkinpeace · 25/09/2013 13:06

New faces, established faces, and we all eat the same on a fast day that is why 5:2 is so cool to jump in and join
and to keep going

Neitheronethingortheother · 25/09/2013 13:11

Fast day today trying to so fasts on Mon and Wed. My stomach was gnawing away on itself in work this morning so I ended up eating a peach and an apple. I guess though if I am reaching for fruit I dont need to be too hard on myself. Have a long day today. Was in work today and have a course later so wont get home til after 10. Will have some ham and a bit of salad for lunch and get another salad box made up for my break at around 8pm later. Luckily the deli I get my lunch in does really tasty, healthy salads with no mayo or heavy dresssings so I can get a nice salad box for few calories.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 25/09/2013 13:39

Fasting today after yesterday's debacle. Going well so far :)

MissStrawberry · 25/09/2013 15:02

Just finished a long job so that has helped me not eat as it kept me busy. 6 hours of solid reading does that Hmm.

In the slow cooker I have chicken drumsticks and thighs, carrots, swede, onions, mushrooms, tomatoes and stock. Going to do rice for the kids to have with it as I don't think they will eat enough to fill them and the rice will help.
