The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

I remember a saying that you need to cut back on the food to lose the weight but you need to do the exercise so you look good with your clothes off. Going to take me an awful lot of exercise....
Joking aside, I'm averaging about 3 runs a week, I did a 20 min exercise section today, used to be mad about Davina but havent done it in a while. I feel the need for stepping it up. Cannot be doing with shred, I do like Jillian, I just hate the cheesiness of it and the lecturing at the way too. 30 day head wreck I call it! Need a decent weight workout, any suggestions?

JB30 · 28/08/2013 12:29

Poor MrsF on no sleep - any chance of bribing them
with tv and having power nap on the couch. If you're at work, this approach probably won't work [wink ]

Tommy · 28/08/2013 12:41

have been away and not fasted for a week or so.
Need to get back on track and have so far had nothing except coffee
BUT....there is a pizza in the oven and 3 left over cakes from a party waiting to be eaten Sad
Should I cave in and get into routine next week and back to work or hang in there..... [hungry emoticon] Sad

Lizzabadger · 28/08/2013 13:01

Can you eat a small amount of pizza and cake and stay within TDEE today and then fast tomorrow?

Lizzabadger · 28/08/2013 13:08

Mrs F I am another one who does not believe a "tall fat" non-bedbound person can possibly gain weight on 1500 calories per day. Are you weighing your food? Counting calories in drinks? Do you think you might be eating in your sleep (surprisingly common)?

MrsFlorrick · 28/08/2013 13:37

JB30. I really like Jillian. She's great in an American geezer-bird sort of way. The cheesiness keeps me entertained while I do the workout.

Otherwise how about the darcy Brussels Pilates DVD? Couple of friends have it and love it.

Lizza. I don't generally weigh food. Most of it can be quite well estimated on mfp (ie half a cup, quarter of a cucumber etc etc).

I don't drink juice or fizzy drinks. One coffee in the morning which is made with 50ml of light soya milk (exactly 11cals). Green tea. I just drink water. Out of the tap or sparkling (oh yes I know how to live Wink).

I don't pick off the childrens food. Stopped that while I was fully low carb.

I have recently had a battery of blood tests at the GPs. And GP said that my thyroid result was very different in the second set of bloods (3 weeks apart) to the first. Something about thyroid function going up and down and after a while it would either settle or stop functioning completely.

He did say it was probably fine but perhaps its stopped working. Yikes. What are the other symptoms. Or perhaps its still settling and not working to capacity yet.

yecartmannew · 28/08/2013 13:49

mrsF I think you should go and get your thyroid checked again. Among other things the symptoms can be tiredness, weight gain (or failure to loose weight while dieting), Depression or low mood, heavy or irregular periods, muscle aches and weakness, dry skin, brittle nails and hair.

I don't think it would hurt (well, "just a sharp scratch") to make sure your levels are OK.

Tommy · 28/08/2013 14:22

lizzabadger - no!!

Managed to resist both at lunchtime and had some melon and raspberries instead Smile

Pagwatch · 28/08/2013 14:25

Darcy Brussels Grin

MrsFlorrick · 28/08/2013 14:28

Cartman. I think I will. Other than being fat and having crap hair, I don't really have any symptoms. Always had crap hair btw.

Perhaps I have just built soooo much muscle doing shred in the last 10 days that I am gaining muscle but losing fat and the scales are static Grin

MrsFlorrick · 28/08/2013 14:33

Pag. Sorry. Bloody phone and fat fingers argh

Pagwatch · 28/08/2013 14:38

Don't apologise. I like it. She should be Darcy Brussels on a food/diet thread...

yecartmannew · 28/08/2013 15:39

I like Darcy Brussels too!

and shouldn't that be bloody phone and muscular fingers Wink

TrucksAndDinosaurs · 28/08/2013 15:50

I am coming in for sympathy: toddler DS had to go to A&E last night because he jumped off a stool and sliced his head open on the floor or a table or something. I was at the door letting a -supposed to be there between 10am and 2pm-- bloody plumber in, whilst hosting a play date. Huge amounts of blood, hysterical toddlers and other mum, husband left work to take is to hospital while I did first aid and looked after DS.

They tried 3 times to glue it while he screamed and screamed then sedated him and the meds didn't work, he just got stoned, then had to be pinned down for a third time and glued and taped. He just screamed in total fear and pain, he has autism so it was even worse for him having strangers in his face.

Then I was up checking on him during r night and been up since 4am.
He is fine this morning - dancing about from 5.30am - but I am exhausted.
Was going to do Shred and fast but fuck it.
Going to get some coffee and maybe have a gentle swim - I can't sleep in the day but I'm shattered and now all the drama is over, strangely weepy. Delayed shock I think.

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 28/08/2013 16:04

T&D - sympathies. While my ds is constantly splitting his head, he has no additional needs which makes life at a&e much easier.

Cartman - well played

Well my planning is finally done ready for work tomorrow. So engrossed was I that I forgot to eat or drink. Have just had two water biscuits with a sppon each of tuna mayo and a cup of blueberries. 156 calories all told. Looking forward to chicken veg and rice for tea since I have 350 calories to use. And, of cpurse, a truffle. Guylian this week - they were on offer :)

yecartmannew · 28/08/2013 16:12

(((((trucks)))))

eatriskier · 28/08/2013 17:16

trucks that's really awful. Hope your DS feels better soon, and you get some rest ((hugs))

MrsFlorrick · 28/08/2013 17:51

Me and my muscly fingers are back!! Grin

Today I have had:
B: nuffink. Doing 16/8. Cept 2 coffees with 50ml of soya milk light each (11 cals per cup

L: Slim pasta (1 packet 15 cals) with gazpacho soup (Waitrose one 134cals for half a pot)

Snacks mid afternoon: 2 apples (80 cals each), 2 Waitrose cup a soup (59 cals each)

Dinner: not had yet but I will be having home made nasi goering which is made of 1 chicken breast, half a pointy cabbage (spring cabbage), 3 spring onion, 150g of brown basmati rice and sauce made of chopped red chilli, some sweet chilli sauce (I know I know but use by dates are up) lemon juice and olive oil. This is for two people (DH and I) to share.
MFP says the above is a total of

Lizzabadger · 28/08/2013 17:56

Well done Tommy!

Hope you get to the bottom of it, Mrs F

That sound awful Trucks I hope you both feel better soon.

NotAsTired · 28/08/2013 17:59

Only managed a 20 hour fast today as I had a late dinner last night due to the rich cream cake I had eaten earlier in the day.

Today's fast has been ok. For dinner I had veg soup followed by 3 oatcakes topped with a warm bean salad and some cheese and I'm about to round it all off with a cup of tea and some chocolate.

MrsFlorrick · 28/08/2013 18:00

Argh posted too soon. Muscly fingers strike again!

Total for my home made nazi goering was 621cals so for my half would be 310 cals.

Trucksanddinosaurs. So sorry to hear. What an utter nightmare. Are you feeling calmer yet? I hope your DSs heads better and you get some sleep. Thanks

Not planning to eat after 8pm tonight. I wanted to 16/8 tomorrow but I promised to take DC to Whistable so need to eat before I drive that far or i will eat crap in the car. It may have to be a 14 hour fast

Also I have been on here moaning this week as in really whining. I'm sorry everyone. I wanted to say that I lost 10lbs in just over two weeks just doing 16/8 and I stalled starting shred. And I can't face a full on 500 cal fast.

So yes this WOE works really well. I don't have any doubts. I am moaning because I want to reach my goal yesterday and am feeling impatient.

I have also stalled and you'd think exercise would help eh. All than work for nothing.

Anyway taking DC for bath.

Lizzabadger · 28/08/2013 18:08

Exercise is really really good for you irrespective of weight loss

It sounds like you're doing really well overall, Mrs F. A lot of that initial 2-week 10lb weight loss was probably not fat loss. Your genuine fat loss is probably just catching up (sorry - I know that sounds unscientific but it's the way I think about it).

MrsFlorrick · 28/08/2013 18:10

Lizza. Ah if only the fat loss would hurry up and get with the program.

Grin

Fingers crossed I won't be tempted by crap at the seaside with DC.

frenchfancy · 28/08/2013 18:14

You are allowed to have a moan occasionally, especially when you are good enough not to take offence when we wag fingers. 10lb in 2 weeks is amazing. Exercise often causes weight loss to stall, that is when you need to get out the tape measure.

Trucks definitely don't fast, there are days when you have to accept that life has got the better of you. There is always tomorrow. Look after your little man (and yourself)

headintheclouds · 28/08/2013 18:24

jb30 im very much hoping that I wont be the exception about quickly losing holiday gains but I think I may be , because it took me so long to lose my weight in the first instance..( 17lbs off in 8 months of 5:2)...

hence my next comment to mrs F - to lose 10 lbs in 2 weeks of 16:8 is bloody fantastic..it took me about 5 months to lose that on 5:2.. Dont beat yourself up..You sound to me as if you are doing very well.
Just keep plodding on and try not to expect too much too soon. This works.( I do need to take my own advice sometimes though..Im the most impatient person) Grin
