The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

I'm at 10 pounds over 4 months, up/down but basically 10 pound Sad I don't know if I hadn't had my holiday gain would I have the stone off but I'll never know now - would mind, food/drink were crap on hols so felt cheated with the 5 pound. Of course I didn't have to eat the crap food drink but I was AI so I had to rightConfused?
TnD my eldest split her forehead at 2 yo. You would swear a pig had been slaughtered the amount of blood. Got it paper stitched in hosp, only to bring her home, have her lamp her head off the wall and burst it open again! Feel you pain. They are brought to this earth to scare is to death, I'm sure if it! Hope he & you have recovered from the ordeal.
I'm on a 16:8 nfd, just ate my dinner, hitting about 1100, seriously tempted to take stroll to shop for eh...supplies? Stop me now! I've money in my wallet and a glass of wine under my belt, this could get dangerous

Talkinpeace · 28/08/2013 19:10

DO NOT SHOP WHEN DRUNK / having had a drink / EVER
You need nothing more to eat or drink until tomorrow

headintheclouds · 28/08/2013 19:31

the thing is jB 10 lbs is alot of weight to lose ...and its now gone right!
even though Ive put a bit on I enjoyed my holiday and there was no way I was going to fast on my holiday ! I did get to wear a bikini for the first time in 17 yrs.. and I still feel good.
Im not even THAT bothered if the weight takes a while to come back off because I know that it will do!
and Yes if Id have been on an AI I would have made sure I got my moneys worth and eaten all courses three times a day and afternoon cakeGrin

JB30 · 28/08/2013 20:00

I hear you Tip, kitchen/bar is closed for the night. I had a small bar of dark choc as pudding, then completed my mfp and dragged my greedy ass outta there. Now watching the US version of "Obese/Fat.. A year to save your life" with Chris Powell, he's no Jesse P (who I think actually copies him) but as eye candy goes he'll do. And this candy don't put no junk in my trunk (I'm not drunk I swear, I'm just hyped up on US programming Confused)

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 28/08/2013 20:45

Very late eating tonight as I fell asleep watching tv. Not sure if it was related to fd or if I was just warm, tired and comfortable. When I woke up though, I was quite light headed and shaky so I thought I had better eat something pdq.

Have eaten so little today, I was able to have a yoghurt as well as everything else. Yum :)

MaccaPaccaismyNemesis · 28/08/2013 21:31

Diet has gone to pot today as found out I may be made redundant Hmm. Have eaten a large portion of chips and battered sausage and a cake. Still feel miserable. Hmm

blurredlines · 28/08/2013 21:34

Can I join please??
Did my first fast on Monday and my second will be tomorrow. I am 5.4 and 11 4lb target weight 9.8lb.

Silly question but do you still watch your calories intake on none fast days? I keep thinking If I eat 'normal' ie 2000 it's just going to cancel out the fast days?

postmanpatscat · 28/08/2013 21:53

hugs to you and DS trucks

macca hope the rumour doesn't come true. Can you start looking for something else just in case?

blurred welcome - yes, work out TDEE and stick pretty close to it on NFDs.

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 28/08/2013 22:33

Praying for you Macca, I hope it turns out well.

Hi Blurred, if you're here, you've joined. I gather that the way this woe works is by restricting calories but also by giving the body a shock on fd's. So it's important to eat healthily on nfd's (btw gradually, your tdee will seem like too much food) but it's just as important to have your 2-3 fd's per week so the occasional splurge doesn't matter too much.

Talkinpeace · 28/08/2013 22:35

Macca
You'll be fine. You have the tools and support to be strong.

Blurred
2000 calories is a random number .... find out your TDEE and try to stay within that on normal days ....

MrsFlorrick · 28/08/2013 22:50

Maccapakka. Poor you. Not exactly ideal.

Are your skills/job very transferable? Perhaps to avoid feeling down while you wait to hear, you could get your cv together and look around. It will keep you busy as well as being proactive and stopping you sinking into a depressed/low state (and eating too much cake).

Again sorry to hear.

MaccaPaccaismyNemesis · 29/08/2013 07:39

Thank you everyone. Without giving too much away I work for the nhs in a specialist role- I'm the only person in the uk who does my job. There are some transferable skills but I have to find a job that is 9-5 Mon-Fri to suit child care and family needs. If they decide that my position is no longer needed I'm probably looking at redundancy- and going to work for an agency to suit my needs. Financially I'll be ok I think but emotionally I'm all over the place Hmm

MrsFlorrick · 29/08/2013 07:45

Maccapakka. Ugh that's awful. I hope they decided they need you especially if you're the only one doing this job!

I want to say something comforting but I guess the only comfort for you will be to hear your job is safe.

thehairybabysmum · 29/08/2013 07:55

I'm on my first proper week of this, only managed one fast day last week, then did Monday this week and doing today as well. I've already lost 2lb!

How do you all find exercising on a fast day, I go to some quite intense classes and am slightly nervous I'll just keel over??

NotAsTired · 29/08/2013 07:57

Macca. Very sorry to hear that. Look after yourself.

MissStrawberry · 29/08/2013 07:59

Cake for Trucks. Hope you are all okay. DS2 just had a nosebleed and that was bad enough so I really feel for you.

I don't know what I am doing at the moment. I can't get my arse into gear for logging calories so have no idea what I am eating. Put on o.4lbs but I have TOM so assuming it is that. I have done one FD this week so far.

DH is away and two of my kids went back to school yesterday so every morning is a worry and every afternoon is a worry. Oh well, only 3 more years to go.

Good fasting vibes to everyone.

eatriskier · 29/08/2013 08:02

macca I hope it doesn't come to that

hairy I love exercising on fast days, but I didn't seriously start until about a month ago. I was hideously unfit though and wanted to be sure I was OK with fasting first.

poor ds has a viral infection, conjunctivitis and tonsillitis at mo. his sleeping pattern is all over the place so good knows when I'll get on my cross trainer today. and its a new one, the old one having only lasted another session after dhs repair. Smile

need to shift this extra 2lb too.

somewherebecomingrain · 29/08/2013 08:17

Hey macca redundancy is not as bad as it seems - everyone I know who has been through it - and there are a LOT - have ended up in a better place. but it's not nice at first - virtual handholding.

Fasting today.

Claricemis · 29/08/2013 08:48

eat day today for me. I'm celebrating my weightloss of almost 2 kilos (!!!) the first week by having an omelette and a small piece of caramel. Don't think I'll be able to have much lunch today.

It's so nice to see how well everyone is doing!

ihavenonameonhere · 29/08/2013 08:58

Right after the disaster of a first day I have done 2 more since then, had a headache after the 3rd one but got through it.

Now on 4th one, not totally always sticking to 500 - happy if its 600 as want to ease myself in and do this long term

NotAsTired · 29/08/2013 09:56

So another lb gone, my last lb, which means I am at my goal weight of 8 stones. Grin

I have lost 12lbs in total since 1 June, including a break whilst away on holiday. I am VERY pleased.

But, but, but...

My BMI is 23.41, which is okay, but as an Asian it ideally needs to be under 23. And I am still one inch off for waist/height ratio. As I am primarily doing this for health reasons (lots of heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure in my family), I've decided that I need to carry on.

So, I am going to lose on a lb by lb basis until I get to BMI of around 22 and my waist/height ratio is on the right side of the ratio.

wrigglebum · 29/08/2013 09:57

Argh- wanted to fast today but been up with ds2 since 4.30 (after a late night last night as was babysitting). Giving up breastfeeding and he is not happy about it! Had got down to just feeding after 4am until I was ready to get up Smile, but he wasn't settling well anymore so it's time to end it. He's 16mo so we've had a good run of it, but I'm expecting a few more nights with not too much sleep. I'll try and get an early night tonight.

So my breakfast this morning was a mini crunchie bar and a marshmallow Blush. Oh well, if I can't manage a fast day I might just have a couple of circa 1000 cal days. I'm in this for the long haul so not too desperate for the last half stone to (hopefully) come off.

MrsFlorrick · 29/08/2013 11:08

Well done. Notastired.

Wriggle. Ugh. That sound tiring. My two played up the night before and I struggled through yesterday on 3 hours of broken sleep.

Better today and heading off to seaside. Been delayed by bad behaviour from DD. refused to go until she had apologised and picked up. Argh. Toddlers and pre schoolers. I feel bad because DD starts reception in less than a week and then that's my special girl gone. At the same time I can't wait. And in two years time it's DSs turn and perhaps I may have a small piece of my life back.

postmanpatscat · 29/08/2013 11:43

Well done notastired you've done really well! With that BMI you must be quite petite? Although having finally caught up with 'The men who made us thin' I'm wondering if there's any science behind BMI anyway as the boundaries seem a bit random!

mrsF mine are teens, there are different issues now but it doesn't get any easier!

eatriskier · 29/08/2013 12:04

Well done notas, onwards and downwards Grin

postman I caught up with that over the weekend and was thinking the same thing. My BMI is just over 26 now, so maybe I'm not really that bad? I certainly don't feel fat anymore, though there is definitely flab to get rid of so maybe...
