The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

the price you pay for losing weight eh Wink ?

BsshBossh · 14/09/2013 19:08

Fantastic, normal BMI, hurrah eatriskier :)

Great loss spam.

HairyPotter · 14/09/2013 19:17

Hello. Haven't posted much but I do still lurk to keep motivated but I wanted to pop in and say that this is easily the easiest diet ever!

I've been on it for 65 days (Thanks MFP) and I've lost 16lbs! I'm chuffed to bits. I've been doing the shred as well to try and tone up at the same time.

Still got another 25lbs to go but I'm on my way Grin

southeastdweller · 14/09/2013 21:32

Just chiming in with everyone else to say very well done on your losses this week. Flowers to you all.

Hopefully nobody here's on their way to eating either 8,000 or 10,000 in weekend cals, according to the oracle that's the Daily Fail Wink

Talkinpeace · 14/09/2013 21:34

Losing weight in odd places
Rings / Fingers : when I did my big weight loss, my hands shrank - so my original wedding ring is held on with one that is two whole sizes smaller
Feet : Its astonishing how much impack not having fat / fluid in lower ankles can have - up to two shoe sizes
shoulders when you stop carrying fat on the outer sides of your arms, all jackets start to hang differently
face : I got dimples when I lost weight

BetsyBell · 14/09/2013 23:14

I am regretting getting rid of all the shoes that were too small after having babies... they'd fit now. And I hung onto them all until I did a big clear out last year.

NSV - tried on lots of boots today which previously would have been too tight around my ample calves. Not anymore! Didn't buy any though - too much choice. Grin

My rings rattle around these days too, swimming and sun lotion turned out to be a worrying combination over the summer.

Well blimming done eatsriskier! Feels good doesn't it!

Betsy
my extra ring was bought after we went to the beach and were throwing food to the birds and my wedding ring flew off on the beach - we found it again and bought the 'keeper' ring the next week

eatriskier · 15/09/2013 07:12

Betsy I had this beautiful pair of red shoes that I gave away as my feet had 'permanently' gone up a size. wish I hadn't given them away now Sad

sadly my engagement ring us smaller than my wedding ring anyway, and my giant knuckles keep them on. so no new being here. though dh has lost over a stone since he started 5:2 and his ring is too big now. I've offered to buy him a pretty little band to hold it on. he's not taking me up on the offer Wink

JB30 · 15/09/2013 07:32

South reminded me of the DM "article" - anyone else read this? It says 5:2 is where you restrict yourself for 5 days and eat whatever you want for 2. Emmm, I kinda think this is the way I ate when I tried other ways to lose weight! Does no-one ever fact check these pieces? And as for the meals, good god, I've done some pigging out in my time but the food lists were like those you see of the poor individuals who have to get their meals brought to them as they're near 40 stone.
Smug mug of a Sunday here - v encouraged by the WL this week so have been just eating to about 10% under daily limit of 1700 and exercising. Very responsible drinking as well, glass or 2 of wine last 2 nights plus a skinny mojito (a vermouth, mint, lime and diet tonic mix- only about 20 cals a glass) Limited treats (not a dog, love that saying)
Of course it is v early - I am making rocky road after pressure from kids but I'll have room for a piece after good behaviour last couple of days Grin
How's everyone else doing?

SchrodingersFanny · 15/09/2013 14:24

I'm doing an unplanned fast, as I feel really sick. Was sick a few times last night, but mainly I feel nauseous when I get up or move. As I long as I lie down I'm OK. Weird!

MissStrawberry · 15/09/2013 14:29

I splashed out on Hunter willies last year and bought the men's as so fat. All my knee boots are the fat calves ones. All now too loose..

Another one who chucked out shoes as went up a size when pregnant and they would maybe fit now.

Planned to fast today (up a pound according to scales in a day) but felt dizzy and out of it so will have to fast tomorrow instead.

MissStrawberry · 15/09/2013 14:31

WELLIES not willies Blush.

Emmabryant123 · 15/09/2013 14:46

No fast today but not over eating either,

Scrambled eggs and beans on toast for breakfast.
Dinner in a bit- roast lamb, roast pots, carrots, brocoli, cabbage, green beans, onion sauce and mint sauce with lots of gravy
Pudding: home made blackberry and apple crumble with a little custard,
Having a can of coke with dinner to.
Other drinks have been two coffees and a tea. Going to have water for rest of day after dinner.

Dotty342kids · 15/09/2013 15:39

Took my mum out to a local pub for lunch today as is her birthday. Lovely roast turkey dinner, not too many roasties and lots of nice veg. Plus apple pie and custard. Oh my, I'm soooo full!
Tomorrow is a fasting day so will have a small sandwich later this evening as otherwise I'll never make it through to tomorrow night.
I'd forgotten how sleep inducing a large lunch is. My DD is demanding that I play with her but all I want to do is have a lovely nap Wink

Emmabryant123 · 15/09/2013 15:47

Lovely my dinner was.
Only 5 medium roasties and loads of veg.
Lovely pud to.
Tomorrow is a 16:8 mini fast.
Plan is tin of soup for lunch at work and a banana.
Then a dinner of or probably fish/meat with veg rice or potatoes . Planning about 1200-1300 calories. Then Tuesday 500 calorie all day fast.

postmanpatscat · 15/09/2013 18:16

Great news eatriskier

Back from my Bournemouth weekend which included veggie burger and chips in Harry Ramsdens, a three course meal in the evening and a huge breakfast! However, I also ran 9km on the treadmill on Saturday and 8km along the beach front in the sunshine this morning. It was beautiful (but hard work!)

JB30 · 15/09/2013 19:08

Day went a bit of courseConfused Around 2000 cals, first time this week. FD tomorrow with shred planned so I'll be back on track. But the guilt, the GUILT!!!

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 15/09/2013 19:51

Apart from poor Schro, everyone seems very positive today. It's a good feeling knowing that you can eat a wide range of foods even when losing weight Grin

Much better week this week (daily average 1395) thanks to a couple of proper fd's. I ate what I wanted every day - saving the least calorific foods for fd's - and am currently stuffed to bursting after sausages, veggy mash and yorkies :) I also got 4 exercise sessions done - a good walk, a couple of yoga sessions and pilates. I'll keep going like this and gopefully see a drop when I weigh in next month.

Twinmama32 · 15/09/2013 20:12

I've just made cauliflower rice, and its been a revelation! Honestly I can't believe I've never tried it before, despite reading everyone's comments on here about it, it took Jamie Oliver's money saving meals prog to try it. Brilliant!
Today was a fast day and despite doing really well and having my fast day curry with cauli-rice I followed it up with vanilla yoghurt cake and custard (and I may have had a sneaky snack earlier of homemade soda bread with jam and butter) Blush
Epic.fail

In my defence I got my second period of the month yesterday which is very unusual for me as I have pcos and struggle to get just the one! Very odd...
So ill try again tues, not sure I can do it tomorrow as its my twins first ever session at preschool and I may need some comforting Sad
Hope everyone had a great weekend and has a better week to come. X

Doitnow · 15/09/2013 21:07

Hello. Just checking in before my FD tomorrow to get my motivation up. Feeling like I'll be full of cold by the morning so will be interesting to see how I get on.

TIP - thank you. I've worked out my tdee. Just over 1800 now, going down to 1700 at my goal weight. I'm pretty clued up about how many calories in stuff so perhaps knowing tdee will help me be a bit more mindful on NFDs.

Will try for 3 FDs this week as I do actually enjoy them normally.

Good luck everyone for the week ahead.

Itsaboatjack · 15/09/2013 21:31

I forgot how bleedin cold you can get fasting in winter! I am sitting on the sofa in jeans, t-shirt, jumper, dressing gown and under a blanket!!

SouthEast, it is definitely cold enough for mulled wine now, I may have to make some soon.

I didn't manage my 2nd FD until today due to too much partying Grin. I'm jealous though now reading about all your yummy roast dinners.

Well done to all the losers this week. Dotty it's good to see you're off your plateau.

wrigglebum · 15/09/2013 23:04

Eeek, I'm not looking forward to getting cold. Perhaps I just need to wear extra thermal underwear on fast days then!

Lunch at Jaime's Italian today- turkey Milanese, half a portion of chips and half a chocolate brownie and I was stuffed for hours. Before I would have had a starter too, plus a whole chips. My appetite has completely changed. I also eat less sweet stuff and not as much carb anymore, it just makes me feel so bloated.

Still shredding, next workout will be level 3 so nearly there! Will post some pics when I'm done. I also bought the kids a hula hoop and I'm getting the hang of it so I might get an adult weighted one. Should be good for toning the waist and a bit of fun too. Anyone else hula? There are even hula exercise DVDs!

FD tomorrow I think, good luck to all other fasters.

thinkcan · 16/09/2013 04:41

wrigglebum I hula hoop. I used to think it is so difficult to use until I got the adult weighted ones. They are much easier to use and I try to do it while watching TV a few evenings per week. It's not just great for the waistline, it apparently helps keep you regular too. Lots af articles about it on the internet, so do your research before buying yours. You want to make sure you get the right size and weight.

Dotty342kids · 16/09/2013 09:08

ooh, I tried a hula class at a spa a few months back and having never, ever been able to hula hoop in my life, I was really good at it! The weighting of them makes all the difference.
I had completely forgotten but love the idea of getting one and doing 20 mins or so whilst watching telly of an evening!
Going to go and investigate options now - any recommendations for what to get / where to get it from?

eatriskier · 16/09/2013 09:09

I'm with wriggle - I'll be getting the thermals out soon.

Have made a lifestyle change decision. I'm getting a bit free with the booze again, and football season doesn't help that. So I'm aiming to keep the boozing to Friday and Saturday but with an option for Sunday and Tuesday if I've had a rotten day with the kids/football/social occasion. Was given a recommendation to buy some posh cordial so last night had some bottle green pomegranate and elderberry with some diet lemonade. Tasted like a lovely sparkling rose. Am also beginning to make some plans with regards to going forward once I've gotten nearer my target weight/weight a bit more within normal bmi range. This is exciting stuff for me Grin

Good luck all fellow fasters today, and well done all losers.
