Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 26 - Bring on the Lifestyle Change Victories!

BetsyBell · 24/08/2013 11:15

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

I'm with you on the boozing eatriskier, I had way too much last week so I'm also planning on restricting it to certain days. Like your tip about the posh cordial, I'll try that.

Asheth · 16/09/2013 10:12

Here for another fast day! So far just had water, but it seems harder today. We only had a light, early meal yesterday evening, so it seems a while since i felt properly 'full'. I had a good weight loss last week, but don't seem to see much difference, so I'm going to try measuring round my middle once a week and hope to see some mm come off!

BetsyBell · 16/09/2013 10:21

Fast day. Need to top up my caffeine drip: COFFEE TIME!

Dotty- Argos has a weighted hula hoop that gets good reviews, or this one gets good reviews if I can't be bothered to get to an Argos.

Fancy cordial is great. I keep in sparkling mineral water and elderflower cordial. Elderflower cordial is great as an ingredient too added to berry crumbles or the cream for a pavlova. Yum!

The uniqlo heat tech stuff gets great reviews on here, I might invest in some.

BetsyBell · 16/09/2013 10:43

Bottle Green were doing a Lime and Coconut cordial over the summer - sounds grim but it was absolutely delightful refreshing and grown-up tasting.

Thanks for the tip re. hula hoops wrigglebum Smile

NotAsTired · 16/09/2013 11:07

FD today and still in bed! OK, that's not strictly true. DS woke me up at 5.30 this morning, I got up and got him ready for school (after much crying from him because he was exhausted too and has had a cold for over a week) but DP took one look at my face when he got up at 7.30 and ordered me back to bed! Feel so much better after a nap and a cup of tea in bed. Am now ready to tackle the day. Smile

NotAsTired · 16/09/2013 11:10

wrigglebum and eatriskier I was contemplating buying this for the house because I really feel the cold!

SchrodingersFanny · 16/09/2013 11:29

Still feel a bit sea sick, but able to eat again. I just had an extra fast day!

Need to make sure I don't go crazy today though. I've got my fracture clinic appointment tomorrow, hopefully after 8 months my foot is finally healed and I can start running and shredding again!

Good luck all the fasters today!

MissStrawberry · 16/09/2013 12:16

Afternoon all.

FD here. SO far have made cheese and bacon potato bake for DH and I to have for dinner and currently making macaroni cheese and bacon for the children. Struggling a tiny bit with no eaten so thought I would have a miso soup as recommended on here but it is almost 100 cals (I read it as 17 on here Confused so not having as want to have my dinner and suspect that will be nearly 500.

Poorly animal so vet soon after 2 trips to pet shop to try and get help/treatment for her.

Lost a pet last week and one in May so hopefully not about to lose another one.

Good luck to everyone for fasting and keeping warm.

Dotty342kids · 16/09/2013 13:26

Yup, it is cold today! I lit our woodburner last night, tempted to do so again tonight actually Smile esp as DH away so can't whinge at me!

Itsaboatjack · 16/09/2013 13:29

MissS, have you got any boullion, or a stock cube? They are only a few cals and can satisfy a hunger pang quite well. Some people also like a teaspoon of marmite with hot water.

MissStrawberry · 16/09/2013 13:37

I have bouillion but no time to make it now. Off to vet to see how GirlGuineaPig is.

ZipIt · 16/09/2013 13:43

Hello!
You lovely ladies got me through my first fast day last week - thank you.
Doing it again today.... just black tea so far, and feeling a little sick and dizzy. Not so hard as first time though.

Hope you're all having a good day, fasting or otherwise.

There's a Waitrose vegetable noodle meal thing I found last week, which feels like a proper full meal but says it only has 267 calories. Really tasty too (though obviously, as it's Waitrose, a bit pricey). Had it with 2 eggs and was still under 500 - can heartily recommend.

peplum41 · 16/09/2013 14:37

Hi all, I've got the week off work so I'm doing sub TDEE 16:8 for a change, plus a normal fast on Thursday.

I need to book my seat on this less alcohol wagon. betsy, I think lime and coconut sounds relish.

Well done eats for entry to normal zone. Bet that feels great. You seem to have got there so fast. I demand to know your method!

Well done hairy too

And zip keep it up, it does get easier. I get the odd sickly fast, usually passes after 20 mins or so, but the vast majority are ok, some even quite pleasant.

Hope you're feeling better soon notastired, bet it was nice getting back in bed, teehee.

missstrawb hope ggp is ok.

Freezing! Wearing 2 fleece tops and a thermal vest.

Talkinpeace · 16/09/2013 14:49

Trying to not drink four days a week has lots of health benefits

  • your liver gets a break
  • alcohol is empty calories so you win there
  • taking days out drops your tolerance so you save money in the long term
Dotty342kids · 16/09/2013 15:27

Oh damn it. I'm normally fine on a fast day but I've found the custard creams and that's sent me off to a slice of cake and a couple of spoonfuls of ice cream so that's it, fast day scuppered, damn it Sad

Will chalk it down to experience and do a fast day tomorrow instead.

JB30 · 16/09/2013 15:35

Fd here and miserable with it. Had a cup of soup even though I had hoped to hold out, so that leaves me about 400. Ended up having a bit of binge to the tune of 2500 cals or so yesterday and I think my body remembered what lots of food was like. So it's making me pay for it today. Cold/sad and tired. Need to bake a cake tonight for dd's birthday, that's not going to help much! Hello, pity party table for 1. Sorry guys whingey'ass here. Be happier in a couple of hours when I'm fed Grin

AngieM2 · 16/09/2013 15:36

Drank stupid amounts of gin at the weekend. FD today. Have just caved and had a banana get buzzing bar (212 cal)...not impressed with myself but it was either that or eat my own ear wax! Risotto for tea (homemade and it's 345 cal so might have to have a smaller portion). This is the first FD where I have caved before tea time and I'm beating myself up. Sugar and carbs on a fast day...the shame!

eatriskier · 16/09/2013 16:04

New NSV here - I can get into bog standard knee high boots. When I was last a 10/12 my legs were too big for standard ones so really wasnt expecting that. Now this is either because my periods of inactivity turned my muscly legs to fat and I've shed the fat or its vanity sizing. Either way I am quite happy Grin

FD going ok, I'm not mega struggling but the hungry periods seem quite intense (luckily short too). Have leftover, from the kids cooking, irish stew for todays fast. I calculated it at 370 cals - its a big portion too and I've got some room for a yoghurt too. Will be very satisfied by the time I go to bed tonight. Am really looking forward to it.

Am freezing though - I think I need that house coat notas suggested!

Carry on carrying on fasters

somewherebecomingrain · 16/09/2013 16:33

Hello all amazing nsvs. I'm fitting back into my ore-pregnancy knee boots too.

First failed fast on fri when my sis left me with her daughter unexpectedly.

Today some fails but not too worried. First fail - had two milky coffees at about 75 cals each. It really helps more than black-ish coffee - makes me feel almost normal. As I'm bf I reckon milk in milk out.

Fail two - made cake for ds and have nibbled away. At least another 100 cals there maybe 200.

Having laska's aubergine spinach and chickpea curry for dinner, about 200 cals a serving. Was planning on having 3 servings but one is more like it. Will try and see how I go.

MissStrawberry · 16/09/2013 17:04

Mini fail here too but I am still counting it as a FD

2 spoonfuls of stuffing and a piece of broken off pastry from the pie I made.

Will try hard and resist the garlic bread and macaroni cheese with bacon I am doing for the kids.

Dinner later with DH.

wrigglebum · 16/09/2013 17:43

FD here. Bovril 'soup' for lunch and just had one piece of broccoli with a bit of cheese on with boys. Got venison in red wine sauce with a bit more broccoli cheese (cheat version with low fat creme fraiche, garlic seasoning and a touch of cheese) and some other veg tonight.

Shredded just after lunch plus school run with a toddler on my back in the sling too.

Was just under 9st10 this morning so going well.

NotAsTired · 16/09/2013 18:32

Another FD over - first one in a while. Happy to say it went really well. Beans and rice followed by chocolate.

somewhere you can eat a bit more because you are still b/f? You can probably eat two portions of dinner. Even with high estimate for the nibbling etc it comes to 650 with 2 portions.

MelanieCheeks · 16/09/2013 18:37

Miss strawb, where was your 100 cal miso soup from?

I buy the wakame packets from tesco, they're the 17 cal ones.
