Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Ooh oh oh and peplum too!

tryinghard2 · 13/09/2013 20:49

thanks everyone :) i have been trying hard, but I'm eating pudding now Grin

Talkinpeace · 13/09/2013 21:15

Doitnow
I fully accept your point about not wanting to calorie count
BUT
please use the calculator to work out your TDEE for your ideal weight
because if you are eating more than that, you will never reach it.

On the up side, once you get used to eating well for the size you want to be, you are set for the rest of your life.

I like being a size 8 : I'm happy eating that way and know that my TDEE will drop by 3% per decade even if my weight stays the same

MissStrawberry · 13/09/2013 22:04

I feel fat tonight Sad.

Trying to prepare myself for having put weight on this week.

Struggling a bit with FD and eating enough on other days.

Well done to everyone else.

Talkinpeace · 13/09/2013 22:13

weight up / weight down
the FAR MORE IMPORTANT POINT
is the long term trend and the gradual greater understanding of a better "way of eating"

remember - I'm pretty psychotic = focussed
and I've never ever been above BMI 24
BUT
you all can reach my zone after a year under control
(and its never , ever going to be about relaxing, its about defining control)

Emmabryant123 · 14/09/2013 06:41

Well done everyone on the losses. Keep going! .
NFD day today but feeling a bit icky so may do 16:8. 12-8pm eating time. Or may do 1200 calories.

Official weigh today. tmi warning! But the only day that I clear my passages is Saturday morning lol. Routine hahahahha. So I'm always at my lowest weight then haha.

Yesterday ate:
Banana
Some pasta with tuna and mayo mixed in at work
Dinner. Fishcakes and chips from chip shop. Didn't even have the muller rice I so wanted on my fast day. And didn't have a huge portion of either. (But not exactly a great day as didnt get my 5 fruit and veg) So unusual as I'd normally scoff loads and stuff my self silly then still have dinner despite not being hungry.
Drinks were: two cups tea. One cup coffee. 500ml bottle of water. Two small glasses tap water, two small glasses orange and mango squash.
Thinking breakfast will be either egg on toast or Cheerios.
Dinner not sure going tescos later on. Really fancy a prawn or ham salad though, salad leaves, cucumber, tomatoes, hm coleslaw, peppers, sweetcorn, ham and cheese maybe a boiled egg.
And fancying a nice juicy peach or nectarine later.
Never really been a three meal a day girl. Always eat two meals but used to eat so much crap inbetween.
Surprised I'm not bigger than I am. I'm 9stone but only 5 foot 1 so look podgy. Ideal weight is just over 8 stone to feel good about my self.
Any fasters today?

eatriskier · 14/09/2013 07:30

Wooooooohooooooooo!!!!

Managed to clear out yesterday so jumped on the scales this morning. Weighing on a day that's not immediately after a fast day is odd for me, I don't want to be a slave to the scales but I knew my weight was inflated yesterday but thought I'd see if I'd lost anything even after and NFD.

Well blow me down.

I'm 10st 9lb - 60lbs down and, and, and BMI is normal!!!!!!!!

MissStrawberry · 14/09/2013 07:34

I had definitely felt a shift in my head. Realised I didn't need food to make me feel better. I wouldn't die if I didn't eat that second. I got really good at saying I could have it tomorrow on FD. No longer needed to do battle with the people/fact that didn't feed me/wasn't fed as a child.

But yesterday I didn't eat enough lunch and ended up having crisps in the evening and more than I needed to fill the hunger.

I have gained 0.2lbs. So I guess that equals a maintenance weight Confused.

I have gone from 12 stone 4 to 11 stone 9lbs since I started so Smile about that but does it mean I need to do 4:3 as it has been a very slow rate of loss?

Don't know what to do today about if and when I eat. I fasted Mon and Thursday though I am sure I went a bit over 500 on Thursday.

MissStrawberry · 14/09/2013 07:38

Well done eatriskier. Flowers

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 14/09/2013 07:44

So much inspiration being posted Flowers for all :)

Managed a proper fd yesterday (530) and feeling fine today - looking forward to to a cuppa as I am very thirsty despite drinking lots. I'll fd tomorrow too as I only did a mini earlier in the week. That 2lbs will be leaving my body asap and taking lots of its friends

Dotty342kids · 14/09/2013 08:00

Hitc Don't Panic!! Not that you are panicking Smile, yes, it's annoying to gain anything but you're right to say it'll come off soon enough.
Still showing as 10st 6 this morning after completely normal day of cooking / baking / wine consumption Grin

eatriskier that's briliant! Massive congratulations. Think I might check BMI calculator to see how near "normal" I now am. Can't be far off........

frenchfancy · 14/09/2013 08:03

eastrisker well done you. Feels great doesn't it.

wrigglebum · 14/09/2013 08:19

Well done eatriskier!

SchrodingersFanny · 14/09/2013 09:16

Well done eat!

I've lost 2lbs and 1% fat!

Spamfrit · 14/09/2013 09:32

well done everyone.

weigh in today and 3lbs down. Yay! After not dropping anything last week am very happy.
Started in June (post March baby) at 13st 4, and made it to 12st 5 today. Slow and steady with a 2 week wine and cheese holiday in between.
I actually got round to watching the horizon programme and was blown away by the health benefits. Managed to get my husband to fast on Thurs.

Day started with eggy crumpets and bacon. Balance it out with a skyride with the DS on the back later. Still a while to go ...16lbs till goal

Spamfrit · 14/09/2013 09:33

ps want to get some better scales with some %fat options....anyone recommend any

JB30 · 14/09/2013 09:47

MissS how many weeks are you following this to have lost 9 pounds. I wonder are you eating enough on nfds as it is from your posts. Have you done the tdee and tracked what you ate using mfp - sorry cant remember if this has been asked previously. I did 4:3 but as found if too restrictive for me and I was more successful doing 2 good fd's than 3 mediocre fd's.
The biggest benefit to this woe/WOL for me is it retrained my appetite and mindset towards weightloss. Previously it was about getting it off as quick as possible, those diets didn't work for me. And judging by the amount of people on here who just keep chipping away and are still here and still succeeding, this works. Half a pound a week is still 2 stone over a year, I've never lost that in the last 10 years of dieting, or correction I managed it in 6 months and regained it in 3 x twice!
.2 gain is a glass of water. Purge scales away til next week, plan you fd's, plan your nfds, get a bit of exercise. Next Saturday the scales will show a better number. Overused saying here, but overused cause its soo true. It's a marathon, not a race.

MissStrawberry · 14/09/2013 12:55

JB30 - I think 6 weeks. I have done the TDEE and know what I should be eating (1807) but as I am struggling to log my food I actually have no clue most days how many I have had. I am not going hungry though. If I have a few olives, some crisps or homemade soup how the heck do I log that?Confused. Hence the not counting Blush.

My mindset definitely has changed and I am grateful to all of you for your advice as I am not afraid of food/not eating anymore and I don't hate myself when I eat now.

I put on 0.2 before and then the following week had lost so I am not stressing too much. It is a marathon not a race and I really do want to lose at least another stone but for me the best thing along with 9lbs off Grin is changing how I feel about food emotionally.

Lunch was a tuna and mayo baguette and I have made chocolate brownie as a treat for DD and I had a small bit to try it and it was delicious but happy to wait for a proper piece Shock. Not that long ago I would have struggled to not shove it all in!

JB30 · 14/09/2013 15:31

1.5 pounds a week on average isn't shabby by any means. I log everything, every blt as they used to say in ww (bite, luck, taste!) Its possible using mfp. You're obviously doing something right, I wouldn't make any massive adjustments bar use a tool like mfp to track

MissStrawberry · 14/09/2013 15:41

I definitely will keep going and I am going on to MFP now to try and log everything I have had today. Thanks Flowers.

MissStrawberry · 14/09/2013 15:45

Just inputted new weight and it now has me as needing 1920 calories a day if I want to maintain my weight.

MissStrawberry · 14/09/2013 16:09

One unexpected issue from losing weight is my rings are a little bit loose now!

JB30 · 14/09/2013 16:26

Snap me too! Rings spinning around. Wonder would it be an nsv if dh would buy me new ones?!?!? Grin

MissStrawberry · 14/09/2013 16:54

I told my DH they were too big. I also told him I needed another one to hold one of them on Grin. Wouldn't care, just had one fixed as it broke and they messed up and made it too small so it had to go back. It is now too big....

Emmabryant123 · 14/09/2013 16:55

Today's calories equal an estimated 1612. Didn't weigh cheese with my salad etc or my cereal so not sure. Won't be over 2000 though which is good.

Had fruit and nut mini weetabix and a banana for breakfast
Dinner was lettuce, cucumber, tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, ham, cheese, boiled egg and coleslaw salad. With a little salad cream.
Pudding was a strawberry muller rice. Feeling very full so nothing else today.
