Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Weighed myself last night after a fast day. On Sunday the scales said
10 st 9.6. Last night they said 10st 5.8! Grin I know weight can naturally fluctuate and probably the more sensible term time eating has helped as well, but I'm definitly taking it as a good sign and will hopefully keep me motivated for next weks fasts!

JB30 · 13/09/2013 11:41

Peplum I'm around 5.4(and a half!)
That is really brilliant, so you're edging towards a 14! That's some jump from a 20- you must and should be super proud of yourself. Bssh 1.8 is fab, are you close to your end goal?
Huge congrats to those who did well, in work so this is a sneaky check in Grin

Abra1d · 13/09/2013 11:46

I am still stuck at the same weight I have been for the last six weeks--four pounds up from my lowest weight on 5:2.

Either my metabolism has taken a nose dive or something weird hormonal is going on. Up until June it worked so well for me--eat what I wanted five days, fast for two.

It's not like that now. Something has changed for me. My only thought is that it might be I lose more in winter because we don't put the heating on during the day and I have to burn up calories to keep warm. My exercise rates are about the same as they have always been.

postmanpatscat · 13/09/2013 12:16

Well done JB prawn bssh angie MrsF and Asheth on your losses - you're all a great advert for 5:2!

eat love the pic in that DM article - so your average dieter has a 24 inch waist if it's anything to go by?!!

ihavenonameonhere · 13/09/2013 13:01

Hmmm

I am a bit down, only lost 2lbs in 4 weeks. I dont have a massive amount to lose... I am 5ft2 and started at 9.9 - I think just under 9stone would suit me as I am very hourglass shaped and will never be a size 0.

My eating on other days is ok, cut back on quantity. I dont drink and am veggie but I wonder if my height means I need to be eating even less :(

Talkinpeace · 13/09/2013 13:17

ihavenoname
Have you worked out your TDEE : for your ideal weight and low activity .... aim to stay within that on three of the non fast days
if nothing else then you are getting used to how you'll eat for the rest of your life

NB TDEE drops by about 4% per decade .... so old fogies like me need less calories than you young things

Dotty342kids · 13/09/2013 13:51

Yippeee! Knew I was feeling lighter this week. Got on scales this morning (3 times!) and saw 10st 5, 10st 5, and 10st 6. So, even if I go with the upper reading, that's still a new low after being between 10st 7 - 10st 9 for months

Yay! I'm celebrating by making a chicken, squash and pesto lasagne for tea. And a Blackberry cake to use up the contents of the local hedgerows :-)

And well done jb30, brilliant news for you and bssBossh

Emmabryant123 · 13/09/2013 14:12

Did my fast yesterday well from 11am picked at a boiled egg, banana, low sugar jelly pot, two teas and a coffee.
Tin of beans, low sugar jelly for dinner.

Today have had 5:50am banana and tea
7:30 cup of coffee
10:15am pasta with a tin of tuna and mayo.
Just having another cuppa tea nowAnd omg I'm not even hungry and don't fancy anything to eat still and I think my dinner may be around 7pm. Don't even want the muller rice I craved yesterday although may have it after dinner
Is this not a sure way to starvation mode, I'm really worried about screwing my metabolism up for life. :(.

Emmabryant123 · 13/09/2013 14:35

Hi peplum, I get up at 5:30 for work have to leave at 6:30. Thankfully Fridays is 1pm finish.

postmanpatscat · 13/09/2013 15:41

noname I'm a 5ft 4 veggie and started at 10st so probably looked just like you but slightly stretched!! What is your TDEE? I set mine at lightly active and it crept down to below 1600 as I lost weight. Do you exercise as well? And track your food intake on NFDs? I did all that and lost weight quite quickly. I also made a point of eating my calories rather than drinking them as there were not many to go round! If you are all ready doing all that, I hope someone else on here has a better idea :)

postmanpatscat · 13/09/2013 15:41

Hooray for dotty Grin

NotAsTired · 13/09/2013 16:25

Well done [jb bssh] and [dotty] and anyone else who lost. It's all good. STS here, which I am happy about given my diet this week.

[ihavenoname] I am shorter than you (4ft 10ish) so my TDEE is even less than yours. Don't lose heart. I've steadily lost weight for the last few months (12 lbs). It's worth tracking your calories for a bit to get an idea of what you are eating. My TDEE is less than 1500 and it does not take a lot of food for me to get above this. But it is doable.

NotAsTired · 13/09/2013 16:26

Oops, epic bold fail there!

tryinghard2 · 13/09/2013 16:38

phew, so many posts to catch up on! I've got down to 58kgs, from about 74kgs at Easter when I started, hooray! Coming on here and reading everyone's stories keeps me going so much, thank you to all the regular posters!!!!!

Dotty342kids · 13/09/2013 16:49

Thanks postman and notastired.
Have a good weekend one and all Grin.
See the Monday fasters back here!

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 13/09/2013 17:15

Great losses dotty and asheth, and trying that is amazing to lose so much since Easter, really amazing. :)

I had a bit of a blip earlier and ate almost 400 calories worth of flapjack with chocolate on the top Blush

But I've eaten well the rest of the day and I will be at around TDEE (for current weight and activity levels).

Does anyone find that putting food into your mouth the morning after a fasting day feels really weird?

headintheclouds · 13/09/2013 17:27

dotty thats fab news, well done..You must feeling great..
Well done bssh ,peplum JB and everyone else who had losses.
Sadly Im UP by 1 lb ...honestly I cant think how..have been within TDEE and easily fasted ..But Ive been doing this long enough now not to get too upset by it..it'll just come off when its ready.
Someone upthread was saying they'd like to lose 7 lbs in 4 weeks..Good luck ..Ive found its taken me a long time to lose 7 lbs ( if Im lucky Ill get 7 off by Christmas ).
Wish I could lose as quickly as you trying hard ..that is an amazing loss .You must have been really trying very hard.

eatriskier · 13/09/2013 17:41

have made it through the day without shoving my head into bad food despite the kids never really getting over the grumpiness (nor me for that matter). there will probably be a lot of wine consumed tonight though. either that or one wine then bed!

eatriskier · 13/09/2013 17:42

really need to congratulate people before hitting send too. well done dotty, trying and everyone else

BsshBossh · 13/09/2013 17:54

Yay Dotty! I knew you wouldn't beat me Wink

BsshBossh · 13/09/2013 17:56

Well done trying - amazing loss!

Doitnow · 13/09/2013 18:29

Fantastic losses again which is always great to hear.
I didn't quite manage my 4:3 this week as I'd forgotten I was on a weekend conference this weekend. But 2 good fast days on Monday and Wednesday and not huge amounts eaten on other days so I'm hoping for a loss.

I'm not counting cals on NFDs as that's a bit too much like old school dieting to me. I accept that this might mean slower weight loss but hopefully I won't ever get bored so will be more likely to maintain this woe.

Am 11.11 now and my first goal is to get in the 10s. I'm 36 and haven't been there done I was 21! Now is the time!!

Wishing you all a lovely weekend.

wrigglebum · 13/09/2013 18:38

Well, a NSV today- have been feeling rather slim in my size 10 skinny jeans today. Took a risk on a pair of H&M size 10 jeans in the charity shop (£3.99), and they sort of fit. I have a rather large muffin top but I did them up no problem. They should give a bit with wear and fit ok.

Been a terrible eating day really- just been picking at bits all day. Compared to what I ate previously it was probably actually a great day, but I just feel really blobby after cakes, biscuits and finishing off the children's pizza at dinner (I can't resist homemade pizza, but I'll be having my own for tea). Oh well, I'll shred when the boys are in bed to ease my guilt a bit and try for a better day tomorrow.

Sounds like there are some great losses going on at the moment, well done!

JB30 · 13/09/2013 19:40

Brilliant Dotty you must be delighted!
Still floating here, cause I'm so skinny you understandGrin
Dh saw my weight loss chart in mfp (cause I showed him- he's a man, he's really not that interested lol) and said he's not buying stock in me! Ha bloody ha - as long as he's not expecting it to go up, only trend around here from here on in is down.
Happy happy Friday all!

Twinmama32 · 13/09/2013 20:06

JB30 we are weigh in twins today, I weighed in the same as you this morning!
The 10s are in sight hurrah!
Well done Grin
