Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

BetsyBell · 24/08/2013 11:15

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Oh no SF, rocky road is not a great activity for a fast day! good luck

Knotter · 06/09/2013 13:25

Thanks - I will try that, reducing TDEE to my goal weight. That way I will be eating what I will have to eat long term.

Itsaboatjack · 06/09/2013 13:35

So far so good. I have had a cup of tea and a coffee with milk but nothing else. I did a very quick kettle bell workout but then had to get to work.

I have salmon and stir fry veg for dinner, hopefully I can hold out until then.

alwaysanauntie · 06/09/2013 13:47

wriggle i have to retract my previous post, just got into a pair of size 10 cigarette style cropped trousers in marks & sparks (yes i know they're not great for vanity sizing, but...) SIZE 10!!!!!! Can you tell I'm happy? Wink

Talkinpeace · 06/09/2013 14:22

Proper weigh day today.
Down a pound from yesterday ; the impact of an empty digestive tract, nothing more.

Knotter
The HUGE advantage of aiming your TDEE at what it will be at target weight is that when you get there you'll already be eating the right amount to stay there healthily.

BsshBossh · 06/09/2013 14:27

Dotty oh my word, your curried baked beans are heaven! Just had them with veggie sausages and poached egg (NFD for me). Thank you so much for sharing that oh so simple recipe :)

JB30 · 06/09/2013 15:32

Happy Friday all. I'm down .6 for this week, happy with that. After my mammoth feed yesterday at lunch (c. 1100 cals) I couldn't eat for the rest if the day! Couldn't believe I didn't want even a bite for dinner. Felt ok this morning so I hung in til lunch. Is the a 24 hour fast? I could do that if I was allowed eat 1100 cals at lunchtime Grin
Tom and feeling munchy'ish, had yummy sambo with pack if crisps and mini bar for lunchBlush But nowhere near as bad as yesterday!
Lots of successes reported today, love it! Well done all

postmanpatscat · 06/09/2013 16:20

Well done auntie itsa and mttum on your successes!

I'm pondering fasting tomorrow...I am working my way through leftover Celebrations (two birthdays in my class today!) Blush and we are out for dinner tonight. This morning I was exactly the same weight as I was on bank hol Monday when we got back from holiday, so effectively have stayed the same for last four weeks. My body would benefit from a fast but is it sort of pointless to eat loads either side to make up for it?! I don't want to (or need to) lose any more weight. I will definitely be in the gym tomorrow morning. I also hear what you are all saying about the benefits of weight training but in my gym there are hordes of muscle-bound guys as wide as they are tall and I just don't feel comfortable over that side of the room at my size/height!

wrigglebum · 06/09/2013 18:28

Excellent Auntie! It's lovely to look at the label and see 10 Smile.

Postman- does your gym do bodypump classes at all? They are brilliant for lean muscle mass- lots of repetitions with slightly lighter weights. It gives you a real buzz too. I think weights can be intimidating but maybe get a program worked out so you feel confident in what you're doing. It's a shame most women won't do weights as they are so beneficial for helping tone up and strengthen your bones.

TrucksAndDinosaurs · 06/09/2013 18:52

Under ten stone for first time in a decade!
Possibly longer.
Goal smashed: new goal is 137lb and fit and ripped.

Talkinpeace · 06/09/2013 19:04

trucksanddinosaurs
WAHEY : well done
and even more well done to set the new target because you KNOW you can do it
Wine to celebrate ....

BsshBossh · 06/09/2013 19:25

Great losses everyone. And Trucks - under 10 stones woohhooooo!

JB30 · 06/09/2013 20:03

Wow Trucks, you're my dream weight, wel'jel Grin
You done goooood girl Wink

Itsaboatjack · 06/09/2013 20:24

Well one trucks that's brilliant.

I've mostly managed an FD, I accidentally went over, nearly 700cals. Stupidly I forgot to count the salmon fillet I had with dinner, I counted all my milk today, I counted all my veg, and the oil I used to stir fry it in, was nicely under my 500 so I had a yogurt for dessert and then realised I'd not counted the salmon. How stupid is that!!

Feeling snacky now but I will not succumb.

I can have it tomorrow
I can have it tomorrow

SchrodingersFanny · 06/09/2013 21:27

Got over the worst, cooking dinner for DCs. Feel good. I did a yogalates work out, because I can't do shred until my foot is healed.

How much have people lost all together? I want at least two stone.

JB30 · 06/09/2013 21:55

Shroed to answer your question (lurking as keeping away from chocolate!)I thought I was following this WOL for 4.5 months but in fact it's not quite that, about 3.5 months and c.12.5 lbs down. So a little under a pound a week. Would love to hit the stone on my 4 month'a'versary. If I can continue at this rate, it's possible I could be under 10.7 by Xmas (started at 12.5.2, now 11.6.8. V happy with the way it's going.

mttum · 06/09/2013 21:58

schrod, about 29lb since mid May.

postmanpatscat · 06/09/2013 22:26

Well done trucks!

wriggle my gym doesn't really do classes (well, what do you expect for £16 a month?!)

shroed 2st in 6 months (1st 4 in first three months) and I started at BMI of 24.

itsa you can do it!

eatriskier · 06/09/2013 22:32

Yay for trucks

SF do you mean 2 stone this week? If you mean in total then you can just have mine - I'm 4st1lb down

itsa stay strong, you know you can do it

auntie missed your NSV somehow, I'm happily in 10s too (American here though Wink)

Itsaboatjack · 07/09/2013 00:12

Made it, 1st time I've managed 2 FDs in a week since the beginning of summer hols. Finished work now, off to bed now where I think I'll dream about bacon and eggs for brekkie.

wildwater · 07/09/2013 02:19

Yoga twice a week, about to step up to three. Able to put my heels on the floor now when doing downwards dog - so good. Changes in mid-section. Everything is starting to tighten up in a way I had once despaired of ever achieving. Now really wanting to be considerably thinner than I am, but facing opposition: you're getting too thin etc. Slowly is they way, I think.

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 07/09/2013 06:36

Schrod thank you - I am totally getting out my darcy bussell dvd today - I'm also nursing an injury (sprained snkle) which is preventing the shred and completely forgot I had that until I read your post :)

Which brings me onto WildWater are you going to a class or using a dvd? If it's a dvd, could you post tgr title please? Whenever I want to get back into yoga, I buy a new dvd and there's always something dodgy. The last one claimed to increase sexual arousal. I'm single - that's the last thing I need to do!!

BetsyBell · 07/09/2013 07:23

Hellesbelles - I like Tara Lee's DVD for yoga - I think it's called Elements of something.

OP posts:
BetsyBell · 07/09/2013 07:26

Elements of Earth Foundation is the one I've used, I love it. I see she's released more in the series now which I might look into Smile

I've woken up feeling sluggish and full. That's what a couple of weeks of over eating and no fasting will do to you. I'm definitely going for a Sunday fast which I hope will get me back on track, my poor body needs a break!

In the meantime my DH has done his back in so he's discovering the amazing benefits of yoga stretches... I think I need to get him his own mat and we can yoga together at home! I think if he'd had more core strength he wouldn't have hurt his back throwing the kids around in the pool
