The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Have survived the tougher (for me) second FD of the week. For some reason I couldn't get through the day without an apple (mid-morning) and a small banana after my lunchtime workout. But dinner is vegetable curry that's very low calorie so I should be fine.

Phew, I made it!

eatriskier · 05/09/2013 20:34

Another fd successfully made here. Massive dinner eaten. Just waiting until 9 so I can go to bed (9 is my cut off time for being ok to go to bed when not ill!).

postmanpatscat · 06/09/2013 06:33

Well done to yesterday's fasters!

It all went quiet on here after your post eatriskier, maybe everyone else had an early night too!

southeastdweller · 06/09/2013 07:09

Well done missstrawberry, bssh, tip, mttum, and eat for fasting successfully yesterday.

Belated congrats B&W and I agree with others the name is lovely.

I wonder what's happened to ponygirl and akarucker?

I'm still maintaining fine but still to prone to carb abuse and I don't like it so I'm going to re-read the Briffa book soon for motivation. Hopefully reducing carbs a little and finally doing weights on top of my usual cardio will reduce my still quite big and flabby thighs as well as tone me up all over.

Enjoy your weekends all.

MissStrawberry · 06/09/2013 07:17

Morning all.

Terrible night. Late to sleep and then woke too early. Feel low today. Planning a quiet day but also think I should probably do jobs and errands to keep busy as sitting around doing not very much makes me want to fall asleep.

Just had a yummy piece of sundried tomato and chilli bread toast.

Keep forgetting to calorie count on MFP but I am kind of adding it in my head and I am doing okay.

Hope everyone has a good day.

BsshBossh · 06/09/2013 07:18

Phew, one week back on 5:2 and 2.6 lbs down. Still 2 lbs above my lowest pre-summer weight but feeling good about it.

3 NFDs now. Yippeeee!

eatriskier · 06/09/2013 07:25

Wow - everyone came to bed with me. You'd think I'd have noticed Wink

Bssh yay! 3 NFDs.

Love a good NFD! Already have a food and wine filled day planned (well, wine in the evening). All under TDEE, and large quantities too.

MissStrawberry · 06/09/2013 07:37

I am wondering whether I need to do 3 fast days rather than 2 Confused.

wrigglebum · 06/09/2013 07:55

9st12lbs today, so fairly safely in the 9s now I hope. And losing again after a few weeks of maintaining.

Only 1 proper fast this week but Wednesday and Thursday were sort of semi fasts with 16:8 to make up for it. Planning a lovely takeaway curry tonight, yum.

Good work to yesterday's fasters and good luck to any fasting today. Well done to all NSVs and SVs.

Southeast- I have definitely cut back on carbs a lot but I do still love carbs. There really is nothing like some good fresh bread and butter! I did low carb for a bit and it did feel pretty restrictive. I think just cutting back suits me well, smaller portions of carbs as part of a meal and no carby snacks. Low GI/GL I guess rather than low carb. I can't bear the idea of any food being forbidden, which is why this woe suits me. Weights workouts are good too, they always make me feel loads better than just cardio.

Is anyone else finally starting to like their body? Mine's in no way perfect, there's still a bit of flab and some loose floppy skin on my tummy, plus the flabby inner thighs I've had ever since I was a skinny teen. I just feel a lot more confident in my skin now and just overall healthier. I've stopped eating until I'm stuffed and it feels much better.

Itsaboatjack · 06/09/2013 08:11

I will fast today
I will fast today
I will fast today

Yesterday was a complete washout, and for no good reason either. Must get some willpower back. Anyone else fasting today?

BsshBossh · 06/09/2013 08:11

MissS if I were you (and if you're child free today) I'd sleep today to catch up and replenish your energy for the weekend. Big hugs to you.

BsshBossh · 06/09/2013 08:21

wrigglebum yes, I definitely am much more confident about my body despite wanting to lose a bit more weight. I keep asking family and friends to take my photo as I think I look really good Blush. This is after years of hiding from the camera lens. I've become a bit vain but I think I deserve to feel this way after all my hard work.

southeast I'm like wriggle - haven't cut out any carbs but because my portion sizes overall have diminished I'm certainly eating less of them. And the fact that I no longer snack on weekdays means my carbs have reduced significantly. Overall I'm eating much healthier - I'm more likely to have a wild rice or quinoa salad packed with veggies and lean protein for lunch these days than a carby sandwich.

Ref weight training - doing heavy (to me) weights twice ot three times a week has had the biggest impact on my legs and arms than five days of cardio, by far! I love weight training. I think it's the reason people thought I had lost even more weight this summer when in fact I'd put in several lbs. I look much more lean and toned. I've also just started yoga in the evenings at home to complementthe weight and cardio training and have noticed I have fuller range of motion during my weights session as a result.

eatriskier · 06/09/2013 08:40

wriggle I wouldn't say I liked my body now. I definitely prefer it. And I care a lot less about the imperfections. This summer I've been out in a really short dress a few times, I've not been confident enough to do that for years (and to be fair, I never had a decent enough figure for it). I have a lot of excess skin and flab still on my tummy to shift, and I think once that's minimised I will like my body. Though I'm also mindful that its far less of a mess than it was.

alwaysanauntie · 06/09/2013 09:00

itsa i wrote off yesterday and sadly went about 1000 cals over (boo!) but i was feeling rubbish so not guilty about it. Am trying to fast today but tummy is already rumbling so it's going to be a tough one!

jb30 I'm with you on the 2 meals, even a 100 cal salad for lunch means i can cope on FDs.

wriggle am happy with most things apart from the spare tyre round my middle, tummy is MUCH bigger than when i was last this weight :( but i know if i keep going i can get there so generally feeling positive. Also a bit sad about my boobs being several inches lower than they were, but i wouldn't trade my dd for my old boobs Grin!

BetsyBell · 06/09/2013 09:05

Ok, so my no bread no sugar fell by the wayside by midmorning yesterday. Ah well. I've had fruit, yogurt, honey & nuts this morning (missing my sun-drenched Greek breakfasts) so should do better today!

I'm back at work but my days aren't yet fixed into their proper routine yet so weirdly feel like I can fast until they are, but I might try and do one on Sunday instead. I found fasting in the school holidays (not on holiday though) really quite easy so maybe that'll be my way back in to it all.

I won't weigh in until I've done a few fasts but I don't think the damage is that bad - yes I'm a little thicker around the middle and wobblier of thigh but nothing that can't be fixed! :)

The reason I won't weigh in is that I'm determined to keep thinking of myself as 9 something and it's quite possible I'll be in the low 10s at the moment. Silly I suppose but there you go!

Hugs for (((missS)))

Knotter · 06/09/2013 09:12

I have been doing this for 3 weeks now. On a fast day, I seem to lose a pound, then put it back on over the next 2 days (eating TDEE), then lose a pound, then put it back on etc etc. As I have 2-3 stone to lose, this doesn't seem very effective!! It seems I either have to fast more often or diet on the intervening days??

NotAsTired · 06/09/2013 09:17

I tried having my 2nd fast day this week on Wednesday and yesterday but it did not work out, but the good news is I ended up doing 18:6 on Wednesday and 16:8 yesterday so it was not a total washout.

I'm not going to bother with trying to do a fast today as my body is clearly rebelling (PMS) but I think I can hold off breakfast for another hour to make it another 16:8.

Not surprisingly I have maintained this week.

Well done, bshh.

itsa. You can do it!

eatriskier · 06/09/2013 09:24

knotter How have you calculated TDEE? Have you included exercise? I'd suggest trying to set TDEE at least one level below what you think you do.

BsshBossh · 06/09/2013 09:29

Knotter are you absolutely sure you are eating 500 cals on FDs and TDEE on all other days, logging every mouthful etc? If you are then another reason could be your previous diet history - have you been on low calorie diets before? Some people find that low calorie diets have messed with their metabolisms meaning their bodies have become used to lower calorie eating so returning to eating at TDEE (even with 2 FDs) results in the body holding on to it all (thinking famine is just around the corner again).

SchrodingersFanny · 06/09/2013 09:59

I'm fasting today. Much harder as it isn't a work day, but home with kids. Also yesterday was very likely over TDEE as was ds' birthday so lots of cake and treat food.

I used the fast website to calculate TDEE, which came out as 2044 calories. That seems like loads, and I haven't got that far on most days. I can't do much exercise at moment as I am still recovering from a broken foot.

mttum · 06/09/2013 10:16

Wow, everyone's woken up full of beans this morning! Well done to all yesterday's fasters and today's losers, and to today's fasters - go for it!

A bit of motivation, maybe? First "official" WI since 9 August this morning, after two weeks in Spain and the loss of routine experienced by many others due to school hols etc. After 2 x 500 cal FDs this week I am down 1.25lb and 0.25 inches from the waist since 9/8. I am so pleased, especially considering the amount I've eaten and drunk over the last few weeks. Definitely back in the groove now to get rid of the final 11lb.

So come on everyone, if I can do it so can you!

Knotter · 06/09/2013 10:23

BsshBossh I'm pretty sure I am sticking to the 500 and the TDEE (quite high at 1942 cals, so not difficult to stick to). But yes, I've been trying to diet almost permanently for years (unsuccessfully).... So maybe that is the problem - is there a solution? I could also eat less than the 1942, but then I'm kind of on a diet again! I've also found that taking lots of exercise makes me gain weight, I seem to build muscle easily!

BsshBossh · 06/09/2013 10:46

Knotter it's a difficult one. None of us here want to return to permanent low calorie eating but if that's what your body has grown accustomed to then it might be worth re-training it to eat more. The key is to do it slowly: if your TDEE is 1942 then undereat that by, say 200 calories to begin with... see if you start losing, if so then you can sloooowwwwly increase to TDEE again (though over weeks rather than days).

It's actually a bit like eatriskier's suggestion - perhaps set your TDEE at sedentary or lightly active (one or two down from whatever you set it).

Or maybe I'm overcomplicating matters Blush. You've only been 5:2ing for 3 weeks - perhaps you simply need to change nothing and be patient.

But I would try reducing your TDEE a bit (TIP makes the excellent suggestion of eating at the TDEE of your goal not current weight).

southeastdweller · 06/09/2013 12:53

Some fab losses today ? well done all.

wriggle, Bssh I know what you?re saying about low carb and I couldn?t sustain it when I did it briefly last year. Carb abuse has been reigned in since starting this WOL but I know I?m eating a little too much ? I was thinking of carrying around a small box of mixed nuts with me some days as one way to combat this. And thanks both for your weights testimonies ? very inspiring and has given me the kick up the butt I need.

I?m with eat - I prefer my body now more than I ever have before but still podgy almost all over even with a BMI of 21. My inner thighs (always my problem area since a child) are still very flabby. I realise they?ll probably always be a bit big but I at least want to try to get rid of more flab there and elsewhere by doing weights. Overall I?m much happier, though, and I'm not hiding as much. But the best feeling is having my appetite reset and genuinely not fancying as much crap as I used to.

How're you getting on itsa?

SchrodingersFanny · 06/09/2013 12:58

Drinking fruit tea while dcs eat lunch. Argh! And ds has decided he wants to make rocky road for his party tomorrow. I may eat dinner at 4pm!
