The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Oh and folks, I may need some booting up the bum tomorrow - I may be an old hand at this but I feel like I'm back at square 1...

BsshBossh - I missed your advice to rest and spent all morning doing jobs but it was worth it as it looked really good.

I was all set to be fine with my weigh in this morning if I had stayed the same as I know I can loose weight, people are noticing and I am no longer scared of food/not eating but I was surprisingly sad to see I have put on 1.2lbs. I am not sure what I have done wrong. I suspect I am not eating my 1800 calories on normal days but I am certainly not going hungry. I really have to make a better effort to actual log my calories as winging it, and eating when I am hungry and stopping when I am full, is clearly not working.

On a good size I have gone from 36% fat to 33%.

BsshBossh · 07/09/2013 08:39

I'm a recent convert to yoga Helles, wildwater, Betsy. I find it really complements my weight training in making me more flexible and increasing my range of motion. Now I'm in my 40s I figured I needed to focus as much on flexibility as fitness. I use a fantastic, beautifully videoed iPad/iPhone app by Modern Lotus called Yoga Studio which takes you through entire classes (from 15 to 60 mins, beginner to advanced). Very cheap at around 2 quid but video all HD and nearly 300 poses demonstrated. I use Airplay to send it to my TV.

Schrod I've lost 24 lbs since starting 5:2 in February - BMI 27 to 23 (prior to 5:2 I did basic calorie counting in a year and went from BMI 36 to 27).

BsshBossh · 07/09/2013 08:49

Betsy here's a boot up your bum Grin. I didn't properly fast over the school summer holidays and put on 4 lbs but just got back into the same routine (Monday & Thursday fasts) last week and lost 2.6 of those lbs. The second fast was especially hard but I just ploughed through and once I finished the week I was so proud of myself for having got back on the fasting wagon. One thing I didn't do (which I had done before the summer break) was "complicate" 5:2 by also trying 16:8 on NFDs and being very rigid about not snacking. I took last week easy by just going back to basic 5:2 and it was fine.

JB30 · 07/09/2013 09:46

Bssh can I ask can you use AirPlay with a normal tv, it's a smart tv with Internet, I can send YouTube from my iPhone to it. Would love to try that yoga app but iPhone screen a tad small Grin

BetsyBell · 07/09/2013 09:57

Thanks Bshh :) I decided I should weigh in to assess the damage and motivate me. I'm 5lbs up on my pre-holiday weight so if I just damn well get on with it I can shift it all in a couple of weeks I reckon.

So Sunday fast for me and will attempt to not stuff my face too much today (family lunch).

I think it's probably 3 weeks since I last stepped on the scales so I'll have a trip up to boots next week to see how I'm doing.

Thanks for the yoga tips.

alwaysanauntie · 07/09/2013 10:26

trucks yay! Well done, I'm the same as you, just squeezed under 10 st a couple of weeks ago for first time in nearly 10 years. Such a relief & i feel it's not been such hard work so i can happily continue downwards. Race you to 137?!

scrod I've lost 19lbs in 18 weeks (so just over 4 months) and a eased in with 700-800 cal fds for first few weeks, have had a few blowout days of 3000-4000 cals, and a holiday. Definitely haven't deprived myself of anything food-wise, but have cut down considerably on booze. I get such hideous hangovers i don't miss it though.

betsy I'm with you in fasting tomorrow (after thursday's munchathon) quite looking forward to it as the 1 and half pain au chocolat i had for breakfast is not sitting well in my tummy, new territory for me! Will try to give you a good kick up the bum to help :)

BsshBossh · 07/09/2013 10:28

JB I'm not sure. I have a normal TV so I use a small Apple TV box connected to my TV to make it "smart" and I that box makes it AirPlay-able (think AirPlay is Apple?). The box means I can view YouTube, Netflix, iTunes etc on my normal TV. Perhaps you could Google it (your TV brand/make and AirPlay).

BsshBossh · 07/09/2013 10:30

JB just thought, if you send YouTube to your TV from your iPhone then I'm assuming that's via an AirPlay symbol so that yoga app should be the same?

JB30 · 07/09/2013 11:20

I suspect the apple box is the missing link Sad Serms that AirPlay is proprietary to apple - the b*tards. Down but not out, I can play it in the laptop if need be. Thanks for clarifying Bssh, I'm looking forward to try the app out even if it is on the iPhone screen, really eager to start yoga again

JB30 · 07/09/2013 11:25

Oh I could be wrong, there's something on wiki, here's hoping!
Back from shops, bought a size small top (ok it is stretchy!) and it looks lovely on, even though I say it myself! Mid section is definitely neater than it was 4 months ago. Going out for lunch, nfd today and probably my full tdee day too.

mttum · 07/09/2013 13:59

Walked up (and back down) Mt Snowdon this morning, on one small banana and a bottle of water. Take THAT, visceral fat!

Not a fast day for me today though, so into the kitchen to make a nice curry and put some wine in to chill later.

Thanks for the yoga app recommendation Bssch, I'll look at that later too after I've finished stuffing my face with home made soup and bread

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 07/09/2013 14:03

I have downloaded the most similar app I could find for android: daily yoga. The first routine I tried was a 30 minute body toning one. There have clearly been a few changes to my body since I last practiced (from my mid-teens until ds was born almost 13 years ago).

  1. My balance is shot - I am so glad I was beside the table and could rebalance every few seconds during some poses. I could not manage side plank. At All.

And 2. I couldn't get a deeply into several poses. Not a lack of flexibilty but a lack of space thanks to my enormouse belly and thighs. At least they can only get smaller. Right???

BsshBossh · 07/09/2013 15:12

Helles I tried yoga and similar when my tummy was bigger and it was definitely harder so I foolishly stopped. Much easier now the tum as shrunk but I wish I'd have kept the practice up. I'm definitely going to keep going with it now. I feel so much more mobile.

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 07/09/2013 15:56

Bssh I'll be hanging in there. I had forgotten how good it feels. And I remember the diffrrence it made to my body when I used to practice.

MelanieCheeks · 07/09/2013 18:18

Today's NSV - looking at the photos taken on our holdiay and not cringing at my appearance.

Talkinpeace · 07/09/2013 20:11

Another big yoga fan here - it creates flat muscles and good posture and is great for abs of concrete : I try to do 3 classes a week and I have been doing 2 a week of BodyBalance but my cheapskate gym has dropped Les Mills stuff so I may do a couple of hours of Pilates a week instead - and of course I swim to deal with cardio.

melanie
That is an excellent NSV

mummyof2girlsx · 07/09/2013 21:41

Followed your advice Talkinpeace and took part in a beginners yoga class at the gym. I am fit but not very flexible! I'm hoping to get better with practice Grin

Talkinpeace · 07/09/2013 22:44

YAY - well done you. Did you enjoy it?

For the first couple of years I found the mind stuff irritating, but once I got the hang of breathing (standard breath for me is now 8 seconds with 4 second hold) it all made sense.

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 07/09/2013 23:46

The kids are doing studying the types of exercise at the moment and an exercise regime should include cardio, balance, strength and flexibility training to ensure fitness. look away now, I'm gonna hashtag #WhatILearnedAtSchoolThisWeek

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 08/09/2013 00:05

mental exercise

We may be working too hard to tone up as we lose weight - check out the article Hmm

Breadandwine · 08/09/2013 01:07

Fascinating, HB! Thanks for that link. Smile

mummyof2girlsx · 08/09/2013 08:18

I really enjoyed it! Totally different to what I'm used to but I am looking forward to going again.

Eldest DD's birthday this week so have various plans which will interrupt my usual fasting routine, going to fast as usual tomorrow but not sure if I will fit another in Hmm May have a couple of mini fasts too.

Hope everyone is enjoying their weekends Grin

SchrodingersFanny · 08/09/2013 08:29

Weighed myself this morning and I've lost 2kg! Very happy. Think that is nearly 4lbs, all I know is I'm under 12st for the first time since before I was pregnant!
