The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Hello everyone!

I've been back for nearly 2 days so it's probably time to get a grip on the holiday eating and drinking... Finding it very hard to switch off the desire to consume constantly.

It was straight back to work yesterday so not eating then was easy, but the minute I have access to my kitchen it all goes a bit wrong.

I might attempt to cut myself off from carbs for a couple of days before I launch back into fasting. Bread and sugar are definitely my main cravings having got used to eating both every day (and extensively...).

I am not even considering looking at the scales for a couple of weeks - no point, I know I've put weight on but also know how to get it off again.

Just got to get back into a routine I think.

Congratulations B&W, he's a cutie!

Struggling with fasts at the moment due to limited sleep. Plus it's the last week before DS starts school so we're having a few treats (KFC yesterday, but I couldn't even manage it all- unheard of before 5:2), plus will have cafe trip at some point. So I'm just cutting back where I can and keeping up the shredding.

Two pairs of size 10 jeans purchased (Next though so a huge 10) and just under 10st now. Next target is 10st in clothes, so about 9lb10 or so. Final target is 9 1/2st but no rush and no idea if I can do it. I just stopped Breastfeeding so not sure what effect that will have yet (but was only feeding at night so not too big a step).

Re Mirena, I had one put in about 3 months post partum, so it's hard to know if it had much effect as hormones all over the place anyway. I don't have the side effects listed on those threads so I seem to be doing ok. Then again, I was mostly fine on depo (but an absolute bitch on combined pills). I'd say it's worth giving it a little while to settle in but keep an eye on symptoms. Some people are fine on artificial hormones whilst others really struggle.

Breadandwine · 05/09/2013 09:12

Thanks, folks! Thanks

He's finally been named - Oscar Charles! No doubt I'll get used to it.

(Oscar Charlie?sounds like a police car callsign!) Grin

wrigglebum · 05/09/2013 09:52

Great name. I wanted Oscar but got vetoed.

eatriskier · 05/09/2013 10:45

Fantastic name. My own little cutie is called Oscar, which oddly I vetoed when I was pregnant with DD but came round to by the time I was pregnant with him.

BsshBossh · 05/09/2013 10:51

Oh I love the name Oscar!

BsshBossh · 05/09/2013 11:04

FD today, but couldn't make it through to dinner and have eaten an apple. Hopefully that will satisfy and not awaken the hunger monster.

alwaysanauntie · 05/09/2013 12:36

saf no, no name change, I've always been always, just tend to post in fits and spurts so blink and you might miss me!

B&W congratulations, I'm liking the name too, hope he's settling into the outside world well.

wriggle well done on the size 10s and continued shredding. A size ten from anywhere is my next mini-goal, think I'll have to get to 9st 7 or under before that's possible though...
Failed fast today as impending migraine and feeling poo after 4.5 mile fun run (mostly walked in yesterday's heat). Will be under tdee today and try again tomorrow though. Hope you other Thursday fasters are coping ok!

BsshBossh · 05/09/2013 12:38

It's quiet today... Are you all out enjoying the sunshine whilst I'm slaving away at my PC?

Anyone else fasting today?

My midmorning apple seems to have done the trick and I think I'll be able to fast until dinner. Fingers crossed. It's been a long, long time since I've managed two FDs in a week - I've always found Monday fasts easy compared to Thursday fasts.

BsshBossh · 05/09/2013 12:38

Right, in lieu of lunch I'm off to the gym!

JB30 · 05/09/2013 12:42

I'm fasting today but it won't be a 500, might be more mini fast. Can't be helped so not going to stress it.
I can't make it through til the evening, I think I'll always be a 2 meal a day gal!
Going for a walk before my lunch to offset extra cals and take my mind off the hunger. Best of luck Bssh
And congrats B&W, lovely news & lovely name

Talkinpeace · 05/09/2013 14:18

Well I've been to the gym and weighed in. Not as bad as I thought : 9st 2lb : so only put on three pounds on holiday. If I work really, really hard I can probably get to 8:10 and into a cool dress for the party.

Enjoy the sunshine folks : and drink plenty of water but NO SNACKING

MissStrawberry · 05/09/2013 15:00

I am fasting today but have had a slice of home made sundried tomato and chilli bread toasted with some lurpak on. Just musing what I can have for dinner.

Rubbish day so pleased I haven't stuffed my face. Heard news a friend lost her daughter and then her husband within three days and I am so sad for her. How on Earth do you get through something like that?

Feeling emotional. School meeting this morning then medical appointment later for DD and DS2 so it all feels a bit too much today.

BsshBossh · 05/09/2013 16:08

MissS what awful news about your friend. Big hugs to you and her.

NurseEzzzaChapel · 05/09/2013 16:26

Hi all

Just popping in to say hi as yesterday was the anniversary of my very first fast.

I've lost just under 2 stone so far. I've got another stone to go but at the moment I'm working on maintaining my weight by doing 6:1 or 5:2 until I get up the oomph.

Currently just enjoying keeping fasting in my weekly routine.

Ezzza

MelanieCheeks · 05/09/2013 16:29

That's a real tragedy, I hope she can get though such a tough time.

First fast in ages for me today - not too bad, coffee and miso soup till now, looking forward to my ham mushroom and spinach omlette when I get home. Did my shred instead of breakfast, and will be Scottish dancing tonight (the world makes sense when I'm dancing, and my so-called boss is driving me nuts right now, so I'm reaching for my dancing pumps instead of the winebottle chocolate bars)

I may have an options hot chocolate for supper if I feel like it. And then it'll be to bed, dreaming of tomorrow's breakfast......

Talkinpeace · 05/09/2013 16:32

Hi there Ezzza glad you are still keeping going ... maintaining on 5:2 is pretty relaxing.
Melanie Yoga / swimming / gardening are my sanity hits, but exercise is always better than food to clear the head.

MissStrawberry · 05/09/2013 19:05

I cracked and had a can of coke when I got in after 1 hour at the clinic and 50 minutes of the kids being PITA. Having fish and salad for dinner which comes in about 300. I am guessing about 100 for the coke and another hundred for my toast so I guess I can't have a medicinal choc chip cookie Sad.

mttum · 05/09/2013 19:22

5am start today, so a really long fast day!

Really didn't feel like cooking this evening so looked in the cupboard and found I could have TWO tins of Heinz big soup (chunky veg) for a total of just 360 cals. Spiced it up with a bit of curry powder and plenty black pepper, yummy and filling, and still room for an orange and a small nectarine for pud!

Off to bed soon, as soon as I can chase dd off to hers...

Talkinpeace · 05/09/2013 19:55

No food all day.
Spanish omelette for supper (have to use up the courgettes from the garden somehow)
I WILL hit target. I WILL.

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 05/09/2013 19:58

I seem to be veering towards a 4:3 mini-fast woe.

JB30 · 05/09/2013 20:03

FD fail Sad Around 1100 Blush Ate so much at lunch that I can't face dinner, so the kitchen is closed!
Oh well, never mind. Did a 3 mile run this morning and a 2 mile brisk walk at lunch so all isn't lost. Not a great week for the fasting but all in all not too bad. Under tdee at least and plenty of exercise.
Your poor friend MissS, very sad times

Lizzabadger · 05/09/2013 20:10

Around 140 calories in a can of coke MissS (I looked out of curiosity).

So sorry about your friend.

I seem to be doing 700 calorie "fast" days still. At least I am maintaining.
