The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

"Back working" as in working from home, not exercising my back.

MelanieCheeks · 03/09/2013 22:02

No shows! They were all very dear, and we've already seen Blue Man and Cirque (if not, I'd have insisted...), and no desire to see Celine.

But we loved a helicopter trip down the strip at night, and a full day Grand Canyon tour, including Hoover Dam and Route 66. And buying size 6 cliothes in the shopping malls :-)

Didn't win big at the casino, but had a bit of fun losing what I had limited myself to (Actually, that self control that 5:2 teaches you probably came into play here, subconsciously)

I did weigh myself this eveing - fully clothed, shoed etc, to check the scale was working. 136 pounds. Not too bad, I shall do a naked post=pee=weigh tomorrow morning.

Tonight's weigh was to check the scales were working before weighing my Downs step-son. I know he's overweight, and it's hard as he's not my son so my influence is limited....but I was kinda shocked that he's 100kg/ 220 pounds. Need some serious action here to get his weight down ( 5:2 maybe not the best option, but we'll explore options).

frenchfancy · 04/09/2013 06:29

bshh I know what you mean, it is good to get back in to a routine. I've had kids off school since then end of June, and an endless stream of visitors (and when people come to visit they don't just come for lunch they stay a fortnight!).

Still have DM here, but managed to fast yesterday which felt really good, I didn't really struggle at all. Still don't know what the real damage is though, that will have to wait until next week.

MelanieCheeks · 04/09/2013 07:28

Under 132 pounds on this mornings weigh-in, which is less than my pre-Vegas weight, and really close to my 130 target, so I'm feeling pretty darn good :-)

alwaysanauntie · 04/09/2013 08:51

Well done melanie can i ask what height you are? I'm 5'5" and 139 lbs as of this morning and am interested as I'm still a size 12 and your size 8 dress looked fab on you! But, i am very aware you do oodles more exercise than me, so just weighing up my options for slimming/toning... TIA

Therealamandaclarke · 04/09/2013 08:52

HELP!

Doing well on 5:2. Also ebf
Love it. Lost 2 stone, bla bla bla.....
Wanted to drop another few lbs to take me to a bmiof 19. Super happy.

(warning, possible tmi and tenuous link)
But: had Mirena (aka BASTARD) fitted and after a week feel (among other things) phenomenally hungry ALL THE TIME and shockingly moody. No willpower. So no fasts in a while. NFDs are a total binge. Cramming food in and barely drawing breath.
Trying to fast today. Please say something to help me. I feel utterly dismal.

Thanks
swallowedAfly · 04/09/2013 08:59

alwaysanauntie - great idea to have a massage thank you! my scars are probably recovered enough for me to be able to lie on my front comfortably for long enough now. have you namechanged btw?

yesterday i did water and black coffee through till 4pm so at least got the fast in health wise - about 19hrs or so. am a lb down from my summer swell now at 10st5. think i will just keep up the long fasts and more activity without worrying about aiming for a set target calorie wise in the evening and see if i can ease things down appetite wise. hopefully by next week i'll be ready for some 500 cal days.

it's remarkable the difference body wise between 10st or just under and 10st5. given i'm 5'7 you wouldn't think it would make much difference but it really does on me i think because it's basically the difference between having a tummy or not. am currently aiming to get back to just under the ten stone mark and easily maintain it then see how i feel.

swallowedAfly · 04/09/2013 09:01

i'm afraid i'd say get the mirena out! it's never gonna do a body good to convince it it's pregnant and release artificial hormones into your body. bound to effect you massively imo.

Breadandwine · 04/09/2013 09:01

Hi folks

Just to say I've become a granddad again Grin and I've got several pics of my gorgeous - as yet un-named - new grandson on my blog.

Think you'll agree he's a handsome young fella! Smile

swallowedAfly · 04/09/2013 09:04

congratulations B&W Smile

BsshBossh · 04/09/2013 09:28

when people come to visit they don't just come for lunch they stay a fortnight LOL frenchfancy exactly the same in our house - we're based in London (with spare bedroom) so we're a magnet for out-of-town guests. I love it but as an introvert, I limit visits (generally) to school holidays or long weekends. Guests also = social eating so fasts become trickier.

Melanie wow, you've sold me on Vegas! And fab weight loss.

Breadandwine congratulations! You'll be kept even more busy than you already are :)

saf I think your usual Fast 5 days will do the trick.

MelanieCheeks · 04/09/2013 09:29

Congrats B&W!

I'm a shortie at 5'2", so my bmi is currently just under 25.

I'd really need to do a bit more exercise - Park Running is out again this Saturday as I have a funeral to attend (my ex Father-in-law. A lovely man, and I'm still on good terms with the ex, plus one of my children will be attending)

Tell me I should do the 30DS again.

Talkinpeace · 04/09/2013 09:44

Thereal
Probably an utter coincidence.
Put it out of your mind and restart with simple meal plans and get your head back in the right place.

Melanie
Do the 30DS

And please kick me up the bum too as I really should not have eaten that much curry last night : feel bloated and fat but DS does not start school till tomorrow and I have a conference to go next week - I may need to calorie count every day to get down to target weight by the party on the 21st!

eatriskier · 04/09/2013 09:54

b&w congrats to you all. I'll have a sneaky look later but I'm sure he's every bit as gorgeous as you say

thereal I had the mirena fitted within the first month into my doing 5:2. I'm glad as the depo is what set me onto the path of an adult life mainly full of overweightness, but having a good 5:2 base behind me meant I knew I didn't have to give into the hunger. just try to ride it as hard as it is, it will pass. about that time I also became hormonal rage woman. that passed too. I don't think of it as bastard though as despite the fact its still not fully settled down my periods are now contained by San towels and tampons (you know, normal people methods Wink ) and the pain doesn't need medicating as often.

helles he keeps referring to me by my new surname but calling me his partner still, so I am making an effort to refer yo him as dh or hubby when I can. that'll show him Wink

frenchfancy · 04/09/2013 09:55

therealamanda give it time to settle down. I have had a mirena for years, I wouldn't be without it. I no longer have periods, so the once a month binge has gone. If it takes a few weeks to settle down it may be well worth it.

Therealamandaclarke · 04/09/2013 10:09

Thanks. Trying a fast today.
Never had heavy periods so not sure why I'd want to keep the BASTARD though.
Mmm apple and cinnamon tea.

Congratulations B&W

headintheclouds · 04/09/2013 10:26

B&W congratulations ,hope Mum and baby are doing well.
melanie wow what an amazing achievement to return from the land of supersize and lose weight!! Im in awe of you- really! I would have come back several lbs heavier
TIPconsider yourself kicked up the bum! Im sure you'll be where you want to be by 21st!Grin
Hellodotty ,hope youre not too stressed with all the house moving !
Stuck at home waiting for a GP appt..wont bore you with the details . But like everyone else Im hoping to see a downward trend now Im back on the 5:2 routine..only fasting at the moment though..I need a boot up the bum to get me back in the gym!

Itsaboatjack · 04/09/2013 10:59

I'm seriously impressed with all these people coming back from their holidays either lighter or the same weight as before you went away; that's seriously impressive.

saf I'm the same night as you and I'm the same, as soon as soon as I put on a few lbs it goes straight on my tummy and love handles.

Last day of school holidays here so I'm taking dd's to the lido so we'll have a picnic and ice-cream I'm sure, so will fast tomorrow.

Melanie get shredding

TIP no more curry, get to the gym.

Grin
somewherebecomingrain · 04/09/2013 16:26

therealamandaclark I think the mirena coil could be associated with unwanted symptoms, there's load on mumsnet about it, have a look. As someone who suffered pmt and also antenatal depression I gather some women are more sensitive to hormones than others. Just cause some people are fine with it doesnt mean you will be. I have had mood problems on contraceptive pills too.

Xx

postmanpatscat · 04/09/2013 17:34

TIP I read that as 21 stone not the twenty-first and thought you'd gone seriously off the rails!!

Struggling to keep up with you all this week due to new term workload but I think I recall that congrats were due to eatriskier and melanie and bssh and well done to anyone I've missed out.

swallowedAfly · 04/09/2013 17:41

new term workload swamp here too postman - also funding oppotunity landed on me with a super tight deadline so massive proposal and application to pull together in a short time with a lot riding on it so.... aaarghh!! and everything has changed as they did redundancies over the summer and roles that were once there are gone and all sorts has just changed. ho blumming hum! Smile may the force be with you.

another day of long fast but no plans to restrict calories. walked all the way to work and back today plus loads of walking around the site there so hopefully that's offsetting something.

good luck to everyone fasting today x

Talkinpeace · 04/09/2013 19:03
Grin did bugger all today and will probably have a drink tonight even though I should not - but my delivery of Breton cider turned up this morning and a piece of work I spent a lot of time on came to fruition in the crown court today. I've not been near the scales in ages but suspect I'm at around 9st 4 : and wanted to be at 8st 8 by the 21st - little chance of that!
headintheclouds · 04/09/2013 20:19

tIP its wine wednesday so youre allowed a glass of cider tonightGrin. I shall be having a large glass with Masterchef!

Talkinpeace · 04/09/2013 20:23

tee hee. I try not to drink during the week to give my liver a 4 day break but circumstances are conspiring against me.

southeastdweller · 04/09/2013 22:09

melanie How fab to come back from a week in American and actually lost weight. There's so much to be said for skipping some meals.
