Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Nice NSV Bsshh, you've been doing heavy weights haven't you? I bet that's made a lot if difference to your shape even without the wight loss.

BsshBossh · 03/09/2013 16:20

Thanks Itsaboat. You may be right, even though so haven't managed to get to the gym much over school holidays. My muscles definitely look more defined.

Okay, 2/3rds of the way through my first proper FD in weeks. Okay so far but we'll see. Will check in after FD dinner (red lentil dal & rice).

MelanieCheeks · 03/09/2013 16:23

Just back from a week in Vegas! Didn't calorie count, but did loads of wlaking, and resisted all the desserts.

NSV for the week - I found that if I skipped breakfast (or dinner one night getting carried away at the PaiGow poker table.....) I knew my body would be able to cope OK with a missed meal here and there.

JB30 · 03/09/2013 17:26

Major nsv!! Went to nurse for check up and I'm a stone lighter than last visit (Feb) and bmi down to 26 from 29!!!!
She also said she noticed straight away when I walked in. Super delighted here even though my scales isn't in agreement with hers - hers has to be right eh? Grin
As nfds go, today's been up/down, chocolate cake and popcorn. Tempted to buy that book about the cognitive behaviour (Beck Diet Solution) got a sample and it seems good. Someone else mentioned it, any opinions, buy or not?? Defo struggling with emotional eating

Lizzabadger · 03/09/2013 17:51

Congratulations jb30. Judith Beck is one of the doyennes of cognitive therapy (and daughter of Aaron, who basically invented it). Her book will be based on very sound princ

Lizzabadger · 03/09/2013 17:53

Princi

Lizzabadger · 03/09/2013 17:55

Aargh iPhone. I give up. I would get the beck book.

JB30 · 03/09/2013 18:39

Thanks Lizza, I think I'll treat myself to celebrate!

NotAsTired · 03/09/2013 18:54

Lovely sv and nsvs. Well done, eatriskier, bssh and JB Smile

eatriskier · 03/09/2013 18:58

Brill Vs bssh and JB30

And welcome back melanie. I'd love to go to Vegas

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 03/09/2013 19:09

It's all sounding positive on here today!

FD for me. Very busy at work so all fine and refused some amazing-looking cupcakes. Have got sadder as the day has worn on because of some family issues and because I broke my travel mug. The design is no longer available and unlike any other I've seen as it is actually pretty. It was actually pretty. RL folk know I do not function without a mug of green tea on the go. For the last hour, I have been craving a sausage roll. I can't think of anything else.

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 03/09/2013 19:13

Reader, I ate it.

BsshBossh · 03/09/2013 19:25

Just broke my fast with a handful of green grapes and my do they taste like manna.

SauvignonBlanche · 03/09/2013 19:44

I cooked some lovely sausages for the DCs, it was torture!

Dotty342kids · 03/09/2013 19:51

hellesbelles we all have days like that sometimes. Forget the guilt over the sausage roll - it sounds like you have plenty of other things to be thinking / worrying about and be kind to yourself Smile. Tomorrow's another (better!) day.

BsshBossh · 03/09/2013 20:01

helles yep, tomorrow is another day. If you want, you can always skip a meal tomorrow (even if NFD) to balance it out. If I slip up like that I just adjust accordingly the next day (eg no dessert or no breakfast or less lunch) and I still lose weight (most of the time, anyway).

Talkinpeace · 03/09/2013 20:04

Had intended to be good this evening, but its the last night of the holidays so the kids demanded delivery Indian.
I'd better work extra hard at the gym tomorrow!

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 03/09/2013 20:09

Thanks for support it tasted really good.

I have nice food planned for tomorrow involving protein and a lot of veg. Oh - and a ciabatta roll.

JB30 · 03/09/2013 20:19

Just realised my nsv was actually sv! Thanks for the congrats guys

eatriskier · 03/09/2013 20:30

helles I have still not recovered fully from losing a travel mug years ago. My DH to this day still can't understand why nor why I seem to be on a quest to find a new perfect replacement. Hope the family issues resolve themselves and don't beat yourself up over the sausage roll.

JB30 I thought the NSV was the nurse noticing!

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 03/09/2013 20:39

Thank God it's not just me (btw, liking the casual reference to your new husband). It was really nice. Patterned but not gaudy. A good weight. Let out enough heat to warm my hands without burning them. And it was sooooo pretty.

JB30 · 03/09/2013 21:04

It was both now I ponder again, scales was lower, bmi had dropped and nurse noticed! Very pleased all round, although am a bit miffed with myself after failed nfd but think I have a good plan to catch up, mini FD tomorrow, proper FD Thursday. Going to do a run in the morning, keep up the momentum. Who knows, next checkup I might be at normal bmi - ooh that would be most excellent!

alwaysanauntie · 03/09/2013 21:13

jb30 well done you, make sure you put that fab feeling to good motivational use! (no more mutual pity parties for us after stuffing ourselves silly! Well, not this week anyway... Wink)

mel hope you had a great time, somewhere I'd love to go too. What shows did you catch?

bssh just keeps getting better, eh? It's so nice when others notice. I have to stop myself from babbling on too much about how great this woe is when people comment. Am getting a bit evangelical about it all...

helles a great big hug for you, hope tomorrow's a better day xx

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 03/09/2013 21:20

AlwaysAnAuntie that can't be - I have no travel mug :(I promise to get over this overnight but 'it's easier than focussing on family stuff)

BsshBossh · 03/09/2013 21:36

FD over. Fasted for 20 hours on no food though suspect I went a little over 500 cals (on a juicy peach and apple after my FD dal & rice dinner - couldn't resist, they looked so good in the fruit bowl!).

My legs are aching after a good 1.5 hours exercising today (1 hour walking, 30 mins at gym). Also back working (from home).

Yippee, back to a regular routine! (Although I have absolutely loved this years school summer holiday).
