The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

First day back at work today, so tired! Tomorrow is my first fast day, I'm a bit nervous! But I'm surprised how easy it is to stay under 2000 calories on a normal day. I'm using my fitness pal to log it.

swallowedAfly · 02/09/2013 19:10

fasted 20hrs then had a can of beans with lots of spices and some sweetcorn and a sprinkle of cheese added. beans were 280 so that should be under 500.

now struggling with mouth/head hunger so hoping for a very early night to see me through this first fast after a long break.

TrucksAndDinosaurs · 02/09/2013 19:16

Lunchtime here. Giving DS his sweet potato fries and cheese and carrot and yogurt dip. It all looks yummy but I'm on FD and its ok so far. Hunger went after work out and feeling quite serene.

Itsaboatjack · 02/09/2013 19:34

saf I'm also struggling with head hunger, it is most definitely worse in the evenings, I call it 'the witching hour', if I can resist/keep myself distracted for long enough then the craving will pass eventually.

BsshBossh · 02/09/2013 19:50

Physical tummy hunger, I can deal with easily, but mouth/head hunger is a bugger. If I could conquer that, I'd never be overweight.

swallowedAfly · 02/09/2013 19:52

thanks itsaboat and bssh. i am really, really struggling. so tempted.

BsshBossh · 02/09/2013 20:00

It's hard saf. What often works for me though is giving myself a little lecture about self-discipline - of which I have lots in work/career. I tell myself to extend some of that self-discipline to my eating habits. Looking at clothes I want to fit into soon works too. As does keeping busy and distracted when mouth hunger hits. My DH who fasts for health and not weight says that what works best for him is reminding himself that he likes the sensation of physical emptiness in his stomach - that he likes knowing his digestive system is doing its magic so why ruin that by feeding it more.

Talkinpeace · 02/09/2013 20:13

Agree with all of the above - after a meal and at the end of the day the body reverts back to its most short termist modes of "I want to sleep on a full tummy".
I failed at fasting today. Ish. No breakfast, nibbly lunch, light supper, but did cycle 18 miles.
Could really murder a slice of cheese right now, but am oozing over the top of my jeans so will focus on that and NOT eat.

TrucksAndDinosaurs · 02/09/2013 20:16

And after all that I was suddenly really hungry (breast feeding is the culprit - it always makes me hungry on FD when I'm otherwise fine)

So had a boiled egg.

Sympathies to saf some days are tough ones :(

JB30 · 02/09/2013 21:05

Failed fast here Sad Will have to claw it back over next few days. Sigh...comfort eating at its worst

Talkinpeace · 02/09/2013 21:08

roll on the start of term when we get our routines back ....

mttum · 02/09/2013 21:44

Amen to that, tip

mttum · 02/09/2013 21:52

DD back at school Wednesday, my first proper fast day in weeks today, although I have been 16:8ing quite a bit and (mainly) sticking to no snacks. We had a fortnight in Mallorca, which is a good place to go as a vegan if you don't want to put on weight. If I never see another plate of grilled veg again it'll be too soon! Made up for it in Wine though...

Only put a pound on during that trip, but haven't got back into the groove since returning. Not exactly dreading the scales, as my tape measure and clothes tell me things haven't got too out of hand, but am going to get a couple of FDs under my belt before WI on Friday.

headintheclouds · 02/09/2013 22:25

Hi all Monday fasters- Back from my hols for a week now and got straight back' into the zone'-did 2 fasts last week and back to Mon/Thursday this week- Im a one meal a day 24 hour faster now (its taken me a while to get to that point). Mentally I needed to get back into it straight from my holiday or I might have made excuses and still be procrastinating -
Today Ive broken my fast at 8pm with 'Laskas' Aubergine,Chick Pea & spinach curry- I had a massive plateful for about 200 cals and Im completely stuffed-its sooo delicious, I urge you to try it!
Im not usually into aubergines but this curry is seriously good!( its on page 4 of the recipes thread ...)

TrucksAndDinosaurs · 03/09/2013 00:54

Ended up on 700 calories eaten between 1.45pm and 5.45pm so not too horrendous, a semi fast.
Did 35 minute workout fasting first thing and will do another strength workout in a bit (it's 7pm here and just sitting down having put DS to bed).

I fancy wine but no! I will put my sweats on and grab my mat and weights instead.

eatriskier · 03/09/2013 07:52

Well it turns out I am an idiot. It seems my wedding celebrations didn't add weight to me. I actually lost. Weigh in this am and thought yay I'm back to where I was 2 weeks ago. Turns out I've lost 4 lbs

I'm in the 10s just! 4 stone down. 4.5lb off normal BMI. another .5in off waist and 1 in off hips too. GrinGrinGrin

Maybe I should get married more often Wink

swallowedAfly · 03/09/2013 08:21

i failed!

pigged out but at least i did it in 3hrs flat so got a fast in health wise i guess Sad bit worried i wont be able to get back into it.

will try again today and then even if i fail again this evening, obviously i'll try not to, i'll have done two long fasts in a row health wise and warming up. i'm sort of wondering if maybe if i can do all week of leaving it very late and only eating in that 3hr window if the amount i need to cram in will reduce over the week till i'm ready to do the 500 again? god knows.

don't suppose it was likely to be easy after a long break.

swallowedAfly · 03/09/2013 08:22

congratulations eatrisker - that's a fantastic overall loss and you are so close now Smile

alwaysanauntie · 03/09/2013 08:59

eatriskier yay! Not a bad result at all, I'm 1/2 a stone lighter now than when i got married, might dig out my dress this weekend and see how it fits (have very different body shape now due to DD though...)

mttum I'm sure you'll be fine, at least with this woe any gain is only a blip, just keep on keeping on :)

saf I've worked my way down from holiday piggery, why not try a couple of 800 cal days this week to ease back in? You've had so much going on it's probably going to take a bit of readjusting to get back into the swing of it. Can you treat yourself with one of the cheapy student massages as extra incentive? (think it was you getting them, soz if not!)

First fast back in today, managed to end up 70 cals under tdee yesterday despite cakes in the afternoon, so feeling motivated by that and trying to stay in the 9's. Half way there now, 20lbs gone, 20 to target. Hope the next 4 months go as smoothly as the last 4... Happy fasting y'all Grin

Dotty342kids · 03/09/2013 10:08

hitc well done for getting straight back to it, I was the same when we came back off our hols and although I wouldn't say I'm entirely back into my routine it's as near as I can get whilst kids still off. They go back tomorrow, thank goodness!

eatriskier that is just brilliant - well done!

SchrodingersFanny · 03/09/2013 10:43

So, I'm a few hours into my first fast. Had porridge this morning, and I'm only just starting to feel hungry. I have black coffee, peppermint tea and lots of water to keep me going!

alwaysanauntie · 03/09/2013 12:53

schrod well done, hope you're not finding it too bad now you're a few more hours in! Just keep telling yourself any hunger pangs or cravings will pass, and you can have whatever you fancy tomorrow. I only managed to get down to 1000 cals on my first fast, so go easy on yourself if you don't hit 500, now i know it's all about the FD food planning :)

southeastdweller · 03/09/2013 13:10

Congrats eatriskier. I think you're a brilliant example of this WOL, I really do.

FD here - just popcorn and coffee for lunch. Managed to swerve the chocolate croissant samples at Cafe Nero...my God they looked yummy.

wildwater · 03/09/2013 13:35

After doing 5:2 for over nine months, I am amazed at how un-hungry I am on fast days.

Had a weird thing happen...around noon on a fast day I was offered a toasted pumpkin seed, which I took and ate. Well - it felt like I had swallowed a razor blade, which kept churning round and round and giving me the most dreadful stomach cramps. Nasty.

A good lesson in the importance of choosing carefully what food you break fast with, also in not giving in to random urges!

Still haven't found any scales. Not too worried though. I am loving doing yoga (will start going three times a week from now on) and how my mid-section is tightening up. Which is a good thing because it resembles nothing less than a pancake which has been flattened on my stomach!

A friend who was interested in my weight loss asked if my body had 'snapped back'. I had to say sadly, no. Guess that's too much to ask for...but progress can be made, it appears.

All good in Patagonia. Life is beginning to catch up with me here, which is OK. Am making new friends and feeling more at home every day.

Yesterday I began attending an experimental language laboratory, held for free at the home of one of my yoga instructors. Present: me and four young people ranging from 11 - 15. They were practising English and me Spanish. Somehow it worked in a fabulously free-form way and I look forward to next week's session. The young people were patient and helpful with my terrible Spanish.

Just had a piece of toast for breakfast. Half with miso & soft cheese, the other half with local raspberry jam. Plus a cup of rose hip tea, for which this region (Chubut) is famous.

I don't plan to have lunch today. We are going out for dinner, probably staying overnight, so we will most likely be subjected to another long drawn out Argentine meal. Which I do enjoy, but it's so hard to keep track when people keep putting little tastes on your plate and the meals go on for hours!

I am however going back to NO sugar if I can possibly avoid it. Except for an ice-cream treat every so often, which cannot be passed up!

BsshBossh · 03/09/2013 15:14

NSV this morning at the school gate. Two mums and school receptionist haven't seen me in 6 weeks and are like "Wow, you look the best we've ever seen you. Have you lost more weight?" Um, no. Gained 4 lbs actually. But I graciously thanked them :)
